Abstract:Transformation of lignin into high value-added phenolics is of great significance but extremely challenging. Herein, we report a single-step process for the preparation of phenolics from both 2-methoxy-4-propylphenol (one of the major products derived from lignin) and lignin oil (lignin-derived monomers) over Au-based catalysts. In this process, the desired Ar-OH substituents can be maintained and phenolics can be obtained with high yields. The performance of Au/Nb2O5 catalyst is compared with those of Au/TiO2, Au/Al2O3 and Au/ZrO2 and shown that Au/Nb2O5 has the high activity, excellent stability and remarkable selectivity to phenolics, with the yields of phenolics reaching 84.2% for 2-methoxy-4-propylphenol and 66.7 wt% for lignin oil. The detailed studies reveal that the hydrodeoxygenation of 2-methoxy-4-propylphenol undergoes two-steps, i.e., the hydrolysis to propylcatechol catalyzed by the acid sites of supports; and the hydrogenolysis of propylcatechol to propylphenol realized by the synergistic effect between Au and the supports. It is found that the high hydrodeoxygenation activity of Au/Nb2O5 depends on both the electron-rich Au nanoparticles and the Nb2O5 support with the efficient cleavage of the Caromatic-O linkage. This study provides a new catalytic system towards highly efficient and selective conversion of lignin oils to valuable phenolics.

Abstract:Herein, RuMn/Al2O3-SiO2 multifunctional catalyst was prepared and efficiently converted lignin-derived phenols into cyclohexanol by aqueous partial hydrodeoxygenation (HDO). The optimal RuMn/Al2O3-SiO2 (Ru/Mn = 2) catalyst achieved 96.8% of cyclohexanol yield with 100% guaiacol conversion under mild reaction conditions (180 °C and 2.0 MPa H2) for 4 h, with a turnover frequency (TOF) of 861.1 h−1, which is better than most results reported. The high performance of RuMn/Al2O3-SiO2 was attributed to the synergic effect of highly dispersed Ru nanoparticles with small size (1.25 nm), the microsphere structure, the appropriate acid sites from Al2O3-SiO2 and acid-base sites from MnOx.

Abstract:Valuable fuels and chemicals production from biomass with high yields is always a big challenge in the energy utilization field. Herein, a two-step process for the catalytic conversion of lignin was proposed to form the fuels. In the first step, the depolymerization of lignin occurred efficiently via the hydrogenolysis reaction, resulting in 19.2% aromatic monomers under the catalysis of Pd/C and CrCl3. The catalysts exhibited a synergistic effect on the cleavage of β-O-4 bonds and the hydrogenation procedure, which prevented the condensation of intermediate products remarkably. Afterwards, the aromatic monomers were extracted out with octane solvent successfully (extraction degree 89.7%) and then used as a substrate in a second hydrodeoxygenation (HDO) step. Product mixture composed of 26.5% hydrocarbons (increased from 5.5%) and 49.7% alkylphenols (increased from 42.9%) were obtained after the HDO upgrading, which exhibited high potential to be used as fuels. This two-step approach is very promising to be a practical chemical engineering process for the fuel production from lignin.
Upgrading Phenolic Compounds and Bio-Oil Through Hydrodeoxygenation Using Highly Dispersed Pt/TiO2 Catalyst

Abstract:Noble metal catalyst has an outstanding catalytic activity on the hydrodeoxygenation (HDO) process, but its high cost limits large-scale application. Herein, we put forward a novel photochemical method to prepare the highly dispersed Pt/TiO2 catalyst with a low metal loading. And it presented an efficient performance on the HDO of phenolic compounds and real bio-oil. Guaiacol could be converted into cyclohexane with 95.1% selectivity at 280 degrees C under 1 MPa H-2 atmosphere. Characterization results revealed that the high Pt dispersion was the critical factor for the high catalytic activity. And the photochemical method preferred to achieve high metal dispersion due to the room temperature condition. Other typical phenolic monomers and dimers were able to transform into hydrocarbons with most yield above 80%, wherein not only the deoxygenation step, but also the cleavage of ether bonds can be realized in one pot. This catalytic system was also effective on the upgrade of bio-oil derived from the pyrolysis of cotton straw. Hydrocarbon content increased to 33.80% from 11.33%. Alkylphenols content increased to 51.38% from 27.86%. These two products can be used as value-added fuels and chemicals, respectively. Guaiacols and syringols were completely converted into alkylphenols and hydrocarbon. The amount of other oxygenated compounds also decreased significantly. This simple and active catalytic system is potential to apply widely for the upgrade of raw bio-oil.

Abstract:Petroleum, one of the fossil fuels, is still the main source for liquid fuel production. Lignin derived from renewable biomass has the potential to replace petroleum. The abundance of aromatic units in lignin makes it potential to produce high-value liquid fuel. This review offers a summary of the extensive study that has been devoted to the catalytic hydrodeoxygenation (HDO) of lignin-derived phenolic compounds and the conversion of raw lignin into hydrocarbon liquid fuels. Based on the product classification (cyclohexanes and arenes), different catalytic systems, mainly including catalyst species, solvents and reaction conditions, are analyzed in detail. A model study of lignin-derived compounds (phenolic monomers and dimers) is usually carried out to elaborate on the HDO reaction mechanism. 100% yield of hydrocarbon liquid fuels can be achieved in most tests. With respect to the real lignin-derived bio-oil, however, hydrocarbon yields only reach 16.2%–62.8% due to the various components and high instability of the substrate. The technical barriers and challenges in this part are highlighted throughout. Moreover, the conversion of raw lignin is also comprehensively summarized, which actually combines the depolymerization of lignin and HDO of lignin-derived bio-oil in one pot, and its hydrocarbon yields are generally lower than those of lignin-derived bio-oil. In light of this, the important features of raw lignin that influence the production of hydrocarbon liquid fuels are adequately addressed. Overall, this paper focuses on the scientific and technological advances of hydrocarbon liquid fuel production from lignin, and the potential strategies to produce renewable fuels from lignin are discussed.

Abstract:Aromatic hydrocarbons as a liquid fuel have unique combustion properties (high volume energy density, etc.). Thus preserving the aromatic rings while selectively cleaving the C-O bonds in the hydrodeoxygenation of lignin derived substituted phenols without additional consumption of H-2 is of crucial importance. In this regard, the composite materials, which are used as the catalyst support, were prepared through the hybridization of Nb2O5 (niobium oxide) with MC (micro-mesoporous carbon). Ru NPs (nanoparticles) were loaded on the Nb2O5-MC composite supports by the incipient wetness impregnation method. And then the as-synthesized catalysts were characterized by various techniques, including XRD, SEM, TEM, BET, NH3-TPD, XPS, etc. Under mild conditions (200-250 degrees C and 2.0-10 bar H-2), the Ru/Nb2O5-MC catalyst was proved to be highly effective for the hydrodeoxygenation (HDO) of phenol. With regard to achieving a high selectivity to benzene, the biphasic catalytic process in the decalin/water mixed solvent was superior to the monophasic processes in either the decalin or water solvent under the same conditions. Water acted as a co-solvent that prevented the occurrence of side reactions and promoted the catalytic C-O bond scission of phenol. The synergistic effect of the biphasic solvents (decalin and water) and the Ru/Nb2O5-MC composite catalysts, which might stabilize the emulsions and decrease the activation energy of HDO, was investigated. Meanwhile, other probe reactions were conducted to elucidate the mechanism of the HDO of phenol. The application of the efficient biphasic catalytic process may provide a promising approach for improving lignin valorization.
Hydrodeoxygenation of lignin-derived phenolics to cycloalkanes over Ni-Co alloy coupled with oxophilic NbOx

Abstract:Hydrodeoxygenation (HDO) of lignin-derived bio-oil is a promising route to produce advanced biofuels. How-ever, the removal of oxygen-containing functional groups with high bond strength in bio-oil challenges the development of efficient, stable, and inexpensive catalysts. In this study, a series of bifunctional catalysts were synthesized by coupling Ni-Co alloy with an oxophilic NbOx support, which was used for the HDO of lignin -derived phenolics to produce cycloalkanes. The Ni-Co alloy formed on the bimetallic catalysts during calcina-tion and reduction was verified by TEM, XPS, and H2-TPR measurements, which showed excellent hydro-genolysis activity. The composition of the Ni-Co alloy was the most uniform with a Ni/Co molar ratio of 1, and the catalyst achieved the highest catalytic activity. The oxygen vacancies provided by the NbOx support also enhanced the adsorption of phenolics and promoted the removal of oxygen-containing functional groups by forming a specific configuration. The synergistic catalysis of Ni-Co alloy and oxygen vacancies achieved com-plete conversion of guaiacol with a high cycloalkane selectivity of 98.9 % under optimal conditions (300 degrees C, 3 MPa H2, and 2 h). More importantly, only marginal deactivation occurred on the 5Ni-5Co/NbOx catalyst after 5 cycles and it was also successfully applied to the efficient conversion of other complex lignin-derived phenolics. Therefore, an efficient and economical strategy of coupling the Ni-Co alloy with an oxophilic NbOx support to catalyze the HDO of lignin-derived phenolics to produce cycloalkanes was prospective.

Abstract:Lignin-derived products possess high carbon content and offer significant potential to be used as liquid fuels. However, they also contain high oxygen element and unstable functional groups. Hydrodeoxygenation (HDO) is an effective method for upgrading lignin-derived phenolic compounds to produce high-quality liquid biofuels. In this study, a series of Ni-based phosphate catalysts incorporating various metals (Al, Ce, La) were prepared and employed for the HDO of lignin-derived phenolic compounds. The results showed that Ni/AlPO 4 had the most efficient HDO performance, with guaiacol conversion of 99.9 % and cyclohexane selectivity of 91.1 % at the reaction temperature of 250 °C. Various catalyst characterization measurements were conducted to assess the impact of metal phosphate species on the crystallography, morphology, physicochemical characteristics and surface properties. Results indicated that Ni/AlPO 4 catalyst exhibited stronger acidity, smaller Ni particle sizes and larger specific surface area than other Ni-based phosphate catalysts. Based on the characterization results and experimental data, the corresponding HDO reaction pathways and mechanisms were also proposed. Ni/AlPO 4 catalyst was also applied to the HDO of various lignin-derived phenol compounds and achieved a good HDO effect. Moreover, the catalytic upgrading of lignin-oil was also carried out, and a high proportion of hydrocarbon products that increased from 16.0 % to 88.6 % was obtained. This Ni/AlPO 4 catalyst provides potential reference for the HDO application of lignin-derived phenolic compounds for the production of hydrocarbon liquid fuels.

Abstract:To obtain value-added fuels and chemicals from lignin, it is necessary to explore an efficient catalytic system for hydrodeoxygenation (HDO). In this study, a highly efficient and magnetically separable Ni@C catalyst was synthesized for conversion of lignin-derived phenols. Detailed results showed that the pyrolysis temperature played a crucial role in the difference of the carbon-defect degree, which increased the metal dispersion and the strong electronic metal-support interactions. Meanwhile, we revealed that the differentiated pyrolysis temper-ature induced the appropriate presence of Ni2+ as Lewis acid sites and Ni delta+ as heterohydrogen cleavage sites, which provided an acceleration effect for the HDO reaction. The results displayed that higher reactivity of lignin-derived phenols into C6+ cyclo-alkanols was achieved over the Ni@C catalyst (100% conversion and 87.19% selectivity). Moreover, the high selectivity of C6+ cycloalkanes was achieved after adding H-ZSM-5 as Bronsted acid sites (100% conversion and 100% selectivity). This investigated work offers an efficient strategy for conversion of lignin-derived aromatics into value-added chemicals.

Abstract:Phenolic compounds derived from lignin are important feedstocks for the sustainable production of alkane fuels with C6–C9 carbons. Hydrodeoxygenation (HDO) is the main chemical process to remove oxygen-containing functionalities. Here, we have reported the HDO of phenols in a biphasic H2O/n-dodecane system. A series of supported Ru catalysts were prepared, characterized and explored for the reaction among which Ru/CNT showed the highest catalytic activity towards the production of alkanes. The model reaction with eugenol achieved a high conversion (>99%) and a high alkane selectivity (98%), which was much higher than the results from the monophasic system (56.5% yield of alkanes in H2O). The reaction conditions including reaction temperature, hydrogen pressure and the ratio of H2O/n-C12H26 were optimized. The kinetic experiments revealed that eugenol was first hydrogenated to 4-propyl-guaiacol, and then deoxygenated into 4-propyl-cyclohexanol which was the main detected intermediate of the reaction. After that, 4-propyl-cyclohexanol was dehydrated and hydrogenated into propylcyclohexane. Moreover, various phenols and dimeric lignin model compounds were also successfully converted into alkanes in the biphasic systems. The construction of the biphasic solvent-Ru/CNT catalyst system highlights an efficient route for the conversion of lignin-derived phenolic compounds to biofuels.

Abstract:Hydrodeoxygenation (HDO) of lignin-derived bio-oil offers a promising route for the production of advanced biofuels. However, the conventional HDO of lignin-derived bio-oil faces serious problems, such as low hydrocarbon yield and easy deactivation of catalysts. Herein, a novel reaction system consisting of a highly stable bifunctional catalyst (i.e., Ni-WOx/NiAl2O4) and a dodecane solvent was developed for the HDO of lignin-derived phenolics. The Ni-0 species, derived from NiWO4 precursors on the NiAl2O4, were of small crystallite size and high dispersion, together with the strong oxophilicity of W, thereby exhibiting high activity. The use of a highly stable NiAl2O4 spinel support and the replacement of common solid acid with more stable WOx for the cleavage of C-O bond accounted for excellent stability. The optimized 10Ni-15WO(x)/NiAl2O4 exhibited a high guaiacol conversion of 97.8% with a high cycloalkane yield of 83.8% under the optimum conditions (250 degrees C, 5 MPa H-2, and 4 h). Cycloalkanes with a high yield over 90% were also obtained by the HDO of other complex lignin-derived compounds. More importantly, the catalyst always retained its initial activity for the HDO of guaiacol in five runs, with negligible coke formation. Subsequently, the HDO behavior of the bio-oil obtained from walnut shell pyrolysis was also studied. The relative content of cycloalkanes in the products reached 44.3% after the reaction. This study highlights the prospect of a highly stable catalyst consisting of hydrogenation metal and oxophilic promoter, and dodecane solvent to enable efficient production of cycloalkanes from the HDO of lignin-derived phenolics.

Abstract:Efficient deoxygenation of lignin-derived bio-oils is central to their adoption as precursors to sustainable liquid fuels in place of current fossil resources. In-situ catalytic transfer hydrogenation (CTH), using isopropanol and formic acid as solvent and in-situ hydrogen sources, was demonstrated over metal-doped and promoted MCM-41 for the depolymerization of oxygen-rich (35.85 wt%) lignin from Chinese fir sawdust (termed O-lignin). A NiMo/Al-MCM-41 catalyst conferred an optimal lignin-derived oil yield of 61.6 wt% with a comparatively low molecular weight (Mw =542 g mol-1 , Mn =290 g mol-1 ) and H/C ratio of 1.39. High selectivity to alkyl guaiacols was attributed to efficient in-situ hydrogen transfer from isopropanol/formic acid donors, and a synergy between surface acid sites in the Al-doped MCM-41 support and reducible Ni/Mo species, which improved the chemical stability and quality of the resulting lignin-derived bio-oils.
Highly Selective Hydrodeoxygenation of Lignin to Naphthenes over Three-Dimensional Flower-like Ni2P Derived from Hydrotalcite

Abstract:A strategy for low-temperature synthesis of hydrotalcite-based nickel phosphide catalysts (Ni2P-Al2O3) with flower-like porous structures was proposed. The in situ reduction of red phosphorus at 500 degrees C enables Ni2P catalysts with small particle size and abundant active and acidic sites, which facilitate the activation of substrates and H-2. In the hydrodeoxygenation of guaiacol, a 100% conversion and 94.5% yield of cyclohexane were obtained over the Ni2P-Al2O3 catalyst under 5 MPa H-2 at 250 degrees C for 3 h. Other lignin-derived phenolic compounds could also afford the corresponding alkanes with yields higher than 85%. Moreover, Ni2P-Al2O3 exhibited high hydrodeoxygenation activity in the deconstruction of more complex wood structures, including lignin oil and real lignin. Among the two different types of Ni sites of Ni(1) and Ni(2) in Ni2P, density functional theory (DFT) calculations showed that the Ni(2) site, highly exposed on the Ni2P-Al2O3 surface, possesses a stronger ability to break C-OH bonds during the hydrodeoxygenation of guaiacol in comparison with the Ni(1) site.
One-pot hydrodeoxygenation (HDO) of lignin monomers to C9 hydrocarbons co-catalysed by Ru/C and Nb2O5

Abstract:A physical mixture of Ru/C and Nb2O5 is an effective catalyst for upgrading lignin monomers under low H-2 pressure at 250 degrees C to a clean cut of hydrocarbon liquid fuels. The reaction solvent is water with a small amount of methanol additive. Hydrodeoxygenation (HDO) was evaluated using dihydroeugenol (DHE) as an exemplary lignin monomer model. Under optimized conditions, 100% conversion of DHE and very high selectivity to propyl cyclohexane (C9 hydrocarbon) was achieved. Nb2O5 was prepared at a low temperature (450 degrees C) and was shown to contain acid sites that enhance the production of fully deoxygenated products. The methanol additive serves as a hydrogen source for the Ru/C catalysed reduction of the aromatic ring. In addition, when a substrate mixture of DHE, isoeugenol and 4-allylsyringol simulating lignin products was employed, 100% conversion to propyl cyclohexane (76%) and propyl benzene (24%) was observed, thereby suggesting the general applicability of this catalyst system for funneling lignin monomers into a clean cut of hydrocarbon liquid fuels. This study sheds light on the function of each catalyst component and provides a simple and green utilization of biomass monomers as a feedstock for renewable hydrocarbon fuels.
Correlation of the Catalytic Performance with Nb2O5 Surface Properties in the Hydrodeoxygenation of Lignin Model Compound

Abstract:Production of aromatic hydrocarbons through lignin hydrodeoxygenation (HDO) is of significant importance. Previously, we found that Ru/Nb2O5 was an excellent catalyst for the conversion of lignin to arenes with relatively high selectivity (71%). Herein, we aim to clarify which properties of Nb2O5 influence the activity and selectivity. Four Ru/Nb2O5 catalysts with different Nb2O5 morphologies were used in the HDO of 4-methylphenol. Intensive studies show that layered Nb2O5 supported Ru has more Nb=O groups (unsaturated NbOx sites) and highest Ru dispersion, which led to the highest activity and toluene selectivity, this was further confirmed by loading pre-synthesized Ru colloids in various Nb2O5. Finally, a Ru/Nb2O5 catalyst with more unsaturated Nb=O groups was designed and it was found that even with enzymatic lignin as the feedstock, the selectivity to arenes can reach up to 94.8% with the yield of hydrocarbons of 99.6%. This study provides a promising strategy for catalyst design towards the selective production of aromatic hydrocarbons from lignin. (C) 2019 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.
Hydrodeoxygenation of guaiacol to bio-hydrocarbons over Ni catalyst supported on activated coconut carbon in alkaline condition

Abstract:Pulping black liquor is a serious source of water pollution worldwide, which is very difficult to subsequently treat. Lignin is the main component of the black liquor and is the only natural aromatic recyclable resource, which is burnt as waste in the Kraft pulping industry. Designing an efficient lignin conversion catalyst that suitable for the strong alkaline environment of black liquor harbors tremendous carbon-neutral potential but still remains a scientific and technological challenge. In this work, the strong alkaline environment of black liquor was simulated, and low-cost pretreated Ni/AC catalysts were adopted to the hydrodeoxygenation (HDO) of a lignin model (guaiacol), and a breakthrough was achieved in the efficient transformation of lignin compound into hydrocarbons. By multitechniques, (e.g., FT-IR, XPS, Boehm titration, HRTEM), the relevance between introducing functional acid groups and the surface properties of catalysts was revealed. It is found that the increased acidic groups are responsible for the enhanced C(sp2)-O cleavage reactions, while improving the dispersion of Ni NPs and thus enhance the HDO efficiency. It is worth noting that better selectivity of benzene and lower hydrogen consumption are achieved on Ni/NOAC during the HDO process. Furthermore, the reaction routes of guaiacol on catalysts with different functional acid groups were proposed. This work provides guidance for efficient utilization of lignin in waste black liquor, and is of great significance to the development of sustainable carbon-neutral biorefinery and environmental protection.

Abstract:Upgrading of lignin derived bio-oil is an essential step for producing sustainable bio-based chemicals and fuel. Taken into account that α hydroxyl is the abundant functional group in lignin, high effective and selective catalytic alcoholysis for cleaving the Cα-OH linkages would be desirable. However, an in-depth understanding of the reaction mechanisms involved in the cleavage of Caromatic-Cα and Cα-O bonds over a novel catalyst is still needed. Herein, we report an efficient liquid-phase hydrogen transfer strategy for the selective hydrodeoxygenation of a non-phenolic lignin model compound, 3,4-dimethoxybenzyl (veratryl) alcohol, under mild conditions. By employing iso-propanol as solvent and H-donor, and palladium nanoparticles immobilized on nitrogen-doped carbon (Pd/CNX) as efficient multifunctional catalyst, veratryl alcohol dehydroxylation exhibited almost 100% conversion along with very high selectivity for 1,2-dimethoxy-benzene (46%) and 3,4-dimethoxytoluene (54%). Compared with other Pd catalysis, the Pd/CNX has excellent catalytic performances and exhibits higher selectivity for 3,4-dimethoxytoluene under incorporation with 1% HCOOH at 220 °C. The proportion of Pd (0) significantly increases in Pd/CNX catalyst when introduced into N precursor because of its highly dispersed Pd NPs and preventing the reoxidation of Pd (0). The dehydrogenation reaction occurred through the hydrogen generation of a secondary alcohol. Then, the Cα-OH and Caromatic-Cα bonds of veratryl alcohol were selectively cleaved by catalytic transfer hydrogenolysis. The alcoholysis mechanism is supported by dispersion-corrected density functional theory computations.

Abstract:Bifunctional catalysts based on nickel supported on ZSM-5 and BETA zeolites were studied in the hydrodeoxygenation of lignin derived model compounds as well as in surrogate mixtures simulating the light fraction of lignin fast pyrolysis bio-oil. A screening of the hydrodeoxygenation reaction conditions (temperature, time, H 2 pressure, catalyst amount) was carried out using the simplest phenolic compound, phenol. As in real lignin bio-oils more complex phenolic compounds are present, a series of relevant alkyl- and methoxy-substituted phenol and benzene (o- and m-cresol, catechol, anisole, guaiacol, syringol, creosol and 1,2,3-trimethoxybenzene) were also investigated as feedstocks. Furthermore, the effect of the different porous and acidic properties of the zeolitic supports was investigated in the hydrodeoxygenation of guaiacol. The conversion of the model phenolics and the yield of the respective (alkyl)cyclohexanes at relatively mild conditions (220 o C, 50 bar H 2 , 1 h) were in the range of 80-100% and 47-83%, respectively, being dependent mainly on the complexity/side-chain group of the phenolic/benzylic ring and on the balanced content of Brønsted acid sites of increased strength. Regarding the hydrodeoxygenation of the surrogate mixture (C 7 -C 10 phenolics), 100% hydrodeoxygenation efficiency was achieved towards >60% yield of (alkyl)cyclohexanes (C 6 -C 9 hydrocarbons). All hydrodeoxygenation tests were conducted in hexadecane as solvent/substrate in order to simulate model co-processing (i.e. bio-based phenolics with petroleum derived feedstocks) conditions. Reusability tests revealed the stability of the catalysts which showed partial (30%) deactivation after the third catalytic cycle.
