Abstract:Herein, RuMn/Al2O3-SiO2 multifunctional catalyst was prepared and efficiently converted lignin-derived phenols into cyclohexanol by aqueous partial hydrodeoxygenation (HDO). The optimal RuMn/Al2O3-SiO2 (Ru/Mn = 2) catalyst achieved 96.8% of cyclohexanol yield with 100% guaiacol conversion under mild reaction conditions (180 °C and 2.0 MPa H2) for 4 h, with a turnover frequency (TOF) of 861.1 h−1, which is better than most results reported. The high performance of RuMn/Al2O3-SiO2 was attributed to the synergic effect of highly dispersed Ru nanoparticles with small size (1.25 nm), the microsphere structure, the appropriate acid sites from Al2O3-SiO2 and acid-base sites from MnOx.
Hydrogenolysis and Hydrodeoxygenation of Lignin in a Two-Step Process to Produce Hydrocarbons and Alkylphenols

Abstract:Valuable fuels and chemicals production from biomass with high yields is always a big challenge in the energy utilization field. Herein, a two-step process for the catalytic conversion of lignin was proposed to form the fuels. In the first step, the depolymerization of lignin occurred efficiently via the hydrogenolysis reaction, resulting in 19.2% aromatic monomers under the catalysis of Pd/C and CrCl3. The catalysts exhibited a synergistic effect on the cleavage of β-O-4 bonds and the hydrogenation procedure, which prevented the condensation of intermediate products remarkably. Afterwards, the aromatic monomers were extracted out with octane solvent successfully (extraction degree 89.7%) and then used as a substrate in a second hydrodeoxygenation (HDO) step. Product mixture composed of 26.5% hydrocarbons (increased from 5.5%) and 49.7% alkylphenols (increased from 42.9%) were obtained after the HDO upgrading, which exhibited high potential to be used as fuels. This two-step approach is very promising to be a practical chemical engineering process for the fuel production from lignin.

Abstract:Petroleum, one of the fossil fuels, is still the main source for liquid fuel production. Lignin derived from renewable biomass has the potential to replace petroleum. The abundance of aromatic units in lignin makes it potential to produce high-value liquid fuel. This review offers a summary of the extensive study that has been devoted to the catalytic hydrodeoxygenation (HDO) of lignin-derived phenolic compounds and the conversion of raw lignin into hydrocarbon liquid fuels. Based on the product classification (cyclohexanes and arenes), different catalytic systems, mainly including catalyst species, solvents and reaction conditions, are analyzed in detail. A model study of lignin-derived compounds (phenolic monomers and dimers) is usually carried out to elaborate on the HDO reaction mechanism. 100% yield of hydrocarbon liquid fuels can be achieved in most tests. With respect to the real lignin-derived bio-oil, however, hydrocarbon yields only reach 16.2%–62.8% due to the various components and high instability of the substrate. The technical barriers and challenges in this part are highlighted throughout. Moreover, the conversion of raw lignin is also comprehensively summarized, which actually combines the depolymerization of lignin and HDO of lignin-derived bio-oil in one pot, and its hydrocarbon yields are generally lower than those of lignin-derived bio-oil. In light of this, the important features of raw lignin that influence the production of hydrocarbon liquid fuels are adequately addressed. Overall, this paper focuses on the scientific and technological advances of hydrocarbon liquid fuel production from lignin, and the potential strategies to produce renewable fuels from lignin are discussed.
Hydrodeoxygenation of Lignin-Derived Phenols into Alkanes over Carbon Nanotube Supported Ru Catalysts in Biphasic Systems

Abstract:Phenolic compounds derived from lignin are important feedstocks for the sustainable production of alkane fuels with C6–C9 carbons. Hydrodeoxygenation (HDO) is the main chemical process to remove oxygen-containing functionalities. Here, we have reported the HDO of phenols in a biphasic H2O/n-dodecane system. A series of supported Ru catalysts were prepared, characterized and explored for the reaction among which Ru/CNT showed the highest catalytic activity towards the production of alkanes. The model reaction with eugenol achieved a high conversion (>99%) and a high alkane selectivity (98%), which was much higher than the results from the monophasic system (56.5% yield of alkanes in H2O). The reaction conditions including reaction temperature, hydrogen pressure and the ratio of H2O/n-C12H26 were optimized. The kinetic experiments revealed that eugenol was first hydrogenated to 4-propyl-guaiacol, and then deoxygenated into 4-propyl-cyclohexanol which was the main detected intermediate of the reaction. After that, 4-propyl-cyclohexanol was dehydrated and hydrogenated into propylcyclohexane. Moreover, various phenols and dimeric lignin model compounds were also successfully converted into alkanes in the biphasic systems. The construction of the biphasic solvent-Ru/CNT catalyst system highlights an efficient route for the conversion of lignin-derived phenolic compounds to biofuels.

Abstract:The monomers and dimers produced via lignin depolymerization are a promising alternative to transportation fuels after hydrodeoxygenation (HDO). However, these compounds contain numerous oxygen‐containing functional groups that are strongly bonded to aromatic rings. Therefore, the conventional HDO of lignin‐derived compounds faces serious problems of catalyst deactivation due to coke deposition and low hydrocarbon yields. A metal–solid super acid catalyst, i.e., Ru(SO42−)/ZrO2–CeO2, is synthesized, characterized, and evaluated for the HDO of various lignin‐derived monomers and dimers in a biphasic n‐dodecane/H2O system. A high cyclohexane yield of 98.5% is obtained by the HDO of phenol performed at 200 °C and 5 MPa. The “hydrated” configuration can be formed between the hydrogenation intermediates and H2O on the Ru sites. In addition, the anionic vacancies of ZrO2–CeO2 can be occupied by H− derived from the heterolytic cleavage of H2, leading to the formation of metal hydrides. The strong acidity of SO42−/ZrO2–CeO2 is beneficial for the subsequent deoxygenation of the hydrotreated products. In addition, the biphasic system can minimize the side reactions induced by the strong acidity of the catalyst. The catalytic system also exhibits a good catalytic performance for the HDO of other lignin‐derived monomers and dimers to produce cycloalkanes.

Abstract:Hydrodeoxygenation (HDO) of lignin-derived bio-oil offers a promising route for the production of advanced biofuels. However, the conventional HDO of lignin-derived bio-oil faces serious problems, such as low hydrocarbon yield and easy deactivation of catalysts. Herein, a novel reaction system consisting of a highly stable bifunctional catalyst (i.e., Ni-WOx/NiAl2O4) and a dodecane solvent was developed for the HDO of lignin-derived phenolics. The Ni-0 species, derived from NiWO4 precursors on the NiAl2O4, were of small crystallite size and high dispersion, together with the strong oxophilicity of W, thereby exhibiting high activity. The use of a highly stable NiAl2O4 spinel support and the replacement of common solid acid with more stable WOx for the cleavage of C-O bond accounted for excellent stability. The optimized 10Ni-15WO(x)/NiAl2O4 exhibited a high guaiacol conversion of 97.8% with a high cycloalkane yield of 83.8% under the optimum conditions (250 degrees C, 5 MPa H-2, and 4 h). Cycloalkanes with a high yield over 90% were also obtained by the HDO of other complex lignin-derived compounds. More importantly, the catalyst always retained its initial activity for the HDO of guaiacol in five runs, with negligible coke formation. Subsequently, the HDO behavior of the bio-oil obtained from walnut shell pyrolysis was also studied. The relative content of cycloalkanes in the products reached 44.3% after the reaction. This study highlights the prospect of a highly stable catalyst consisting of hydrogenation metal and oxophilic promoter, and dodecane solvent to enable efficient production of cycloalkanes from the HDO of lignin-derived phenolics.

Abstract:Hydrodeoxygenation (HDO) of lignin-derived bio-oil is a promising route to produce advanced biofuels. How-ever, the removal of oxygen-containing functional groups with high bond strength in bio-oil challenges the development of efficient, stable, and inexpensive catalysts. In this study, a series of bifunctional catalysts were synthesized by coupling Ni-Co alloy with an oxophilic NbOx support, which was used for the HDO of lignin -derived phenolics to produce cycloalkanes. The Ni-Co alloy formed on the bimetallic catalysts during calcina-tion and reduction was verified by TEM, XPS, and H2-TPR measurements, which showed excellent hydro-genolysis activity. The composition of the Ni-Co alloy was the most uniform with a Ni/Co molar ratio of 1, and the catalyst achieved the highest catalytic activity. The oxygen vacancies provided by the NbOx support also enhanced the adsorption of phenolics and promoted the removal of oxygen-containing functional groups by forming a specific configuration. The synergistic catalysis of Ni-Co alloy and oxygen vacancies achieved com-plete conversion of guaiacol with a high cycloalkane selectivity of 98.9 % under optimal conditions (300 degrees C, 3 MPa H2, and 2 h). More importantly, only marginal deactivation occurred on the 5Ni-5Co/NbOx catalyst after 5 cycles and it was also successfully applied to the efficient conversion of other complex lignin-derived phenolics. Therefore, an efficient and economical strategy of coupling the Ni-Co alloy with an oxophilic NbOx support to catalyze the HDO of lignin-derived phenolics to produce cycloalkanes was prospective.

Abstract:Hydrodeoxygenation (HDO) of lignin to value-added biofuels and chemicals has a great significance for the advanced utilization of renewable lignocelluloses and the future biobased economy but is always a big challenge. Herein, a Ga-doped HZSM-5 supported metal Ru catalyst (bifunctional Ru/Ga-HZSM-5) exhibited the excellent HDO performance for converting diphenyl ether (DPE) to produce the only product, i.e., cyclohexane, under extremely mild conditions (180 °C, 1 MPa H2 and 2 h). The oxygen-containing group in DPE was mainly removed through the cleavage of the C-O ether bond, followed by metal- and acid-catalyzed comprehensive hydrogenation and deoxygenation. Further characterization results confirmed that the doping of Ga remarkably enhanced the interaction between the metal Ru and the support. For the depolymerization of real lignin, Ru/Ga-HZSM-5 could not only significantly improve the total liquid yield of lignin, but also convert the oxygen-containing species into the aliphatic hydrocarbons.

Abstract:An imperative current challenge for the production of renewable fuels is the development of efficient catalytic hydrodeoxygenation (HDO) of phenolic-rich bio-oils into hydrocarbons. In this work, a series of bifunctional ZrP2O7(x)-Ni12P5 (where × represents the molar ratio of Zr/Ni in the catalysts) catalysts were prepared for HDO of lignin-derived bio-oils (LBO). The characterization results show that among these bimetallic catalysts, ZrP2O7(0.4)-Ni12P5 possesses the largest specific surface area, pore volume and the highest amount of acid sites (Lewis and Brønsted) due to the introduction of appropriate amount of Zr species. Meanwhile, the interaction between Niδ+ and Zr species on its surface creates new active sites for the promotion on the hydrogen adsorption and activation, thus endowing the most excellent catalytic performance. Using the optimized catalyst of ZrP2O7(0.4)-Ni12P5, 95.8% cyclohexane yield could be obtained from the HDO of guaiacol as a model compound from bio-oil under mild condition (3 MPa H2 and 250 ℃). Moreover, 36.1% hydrocarbon yield is achieved from HDO of lignin-derived bio-oils (LBO) under the same hydrogen pressure and temperature. These findings not only open a novel avenue for designing a cost-effective metal–acid bifunctional catalyst, but also provide a viable approach for converting lignocellulosic biomass feedstocks into valuable hydrocarbons.

Abstract:Lignin-derived products possess high carbon content and offer significant potential to be used as liquid fuels. However, they also contain high oxygen element and unstable functional groups. Hydrodeoxygenation (HDO) is an effective method for upgrading lignin-derived phenolic compounds to produce high-quality liquid biofuels. In this study, a series of Ni-based phosphate catalysts incorporating various metals (Al, Ce, La) were prepared and employed for the HDO of lignin-derived phenolic compounds. The results showed that Ni/AlPO 4 had the most efficient HDO performance, with guaiacol conversion of 99.9 % and cyclohexane selectivity of 91.1 % at the reaction temperature of 250 °C. Various catalyst characterization measurements were conducted to assess the impact of metal phosphate species on the crystallography, morphology, physicochemical characteristics and surface properties. Results indicated that Ni/AlPO 4 catalyst exhibited stronger acidity, smaller Ni particle sizes and larger specific surface area than other Ni-based phosphate catalysts. Based on the characterization results and experimental data, the corresponding HDO reaction pathways and mechanisms were also proposed. Ni/AlPO 4 catalyst was also applied to the HDO of various lignin-derived phenol compounds and achieved a good HDO effect. Moreover, the catalytic upgrading of lignin-oil was also carried out, and a high proportion of hydrocarbon products that increased from 16.0 % to 88.6 % was obtained. This Ni/AlPO 4 catalyst provides potential reference for the HDO application of lignin-derived phenolic compounds for the production of hydrocarbon liquid fuels.

Abstract:Production of aromatic hydrocarbons through lignin hydrodeoxygenation (HDO) is of significant importance. Previously, we found that Ru/Nb2O5 was an excellent catalyst for the conversion of lignin to arenes with relatively high selectivity (71%). Herein, we aim to clarify which properties of Nb2O5 influence the activity and selectivity. Four Ru/Nb2O5 catalysts with different Nb2O5 morphologies were used in the HDO of 4-methylphenol. Intensive studies show that layered Nb2O5 supported Ru has more Nb=O groups (unsaturated NbOx sites) and highest Ru dispersion, which led to the highest activity and toluene selectivity, this was further confirmed by loading pre-synthesized Ru colloids in various Nb2O5. Finally, a Ru/Nb2O5 catalyst with more unsaturated Nb=O groups was designed and it was found that even with enzymatic lignin as the feedstock, the selectivity to arenes can reach up to 94.8% with the yield of hydrocarbons of 99.6%. This study provides a promising strategy for catalyst design towards the selective production of aromatic hydrocarbons from lignin. (C) 2019 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

Abstract:The hydrodeoxygenation (HDO) reaction represents an important process for the high-value utilization of lignin and its model compounds. Here, the Ru/HZSM-5 catalyst containing a large number of acid sites was prepared by an incipient wetness impregnation method. Diphenyl ether (DPE) as a typical model compound in lignin could be completely converted into cyclohexane over the Ru/HZSM-5 catalyst under mild conditions (210 °C, 1 MPa H2, and 2 h). The oxygen atoms in lignin and other model compounds could be also effectively removed via the HDO reaction catalyzed by Ru/HZSM-5 in this study. The coexistence of both the function of Ru metal for hydrogenolysis and acid sites in the pores of HZSM-5 for deoxidation was responsible for the entire HDO reaction. The structure–performance relationship of the Ru/HZSM-5 catalyst in the HDO was investigated and the reaction pathway for the HDO of DPE was analyzed.

Abstract:NiMo-doped catalysts were investigated for the conversion of lignin to drop-in fuel through catalytic hydro pyrolysis. The influence of NiMo-doped catalysts with different carriers and Ni/Mo molar ratios on the hydro pyrolysis product distribution were studied using both lignin and lignin model compounds. Two coefficients were proposed to qualitatively evaluate the catalytic performance of NiMo-doped catalysts. Low yield of methane (13.04c%) and high yield of condensable hydrocarbons products (25.82c%) with low selectivity of polyaromatics (4.37%) were obtained at 1.0 MPa H-2 and 400 degrees C catalytic temperature during lignin catalytic hydropyrolysis over Ni1Mo/ZrO2. The hydrodeoxygenation activity of NixMo/ZrO2 depends on Ni-0, Mo4+, and Mo3+. The synergistic effect of Ni and Mo promotes the removal of the phenolic methoxy group. The increase in hydrogen pressure tends to make hydrogen to be consumed through hydrocracking and hydrogenation reactions. The influence of Ni1Mo/ZrO2 on evolution of lignin hydropyrolysis volatiles was revealed. Ni shows strong activity in the removal of phenolic hydroxyl groups and benzene ring hydrogenation, while Mo tends to remove phenolic methoxy groups.
Engineered Ru on HY zeolite catalyst for continuous and selective hydrodeoxygenation of lignin phenolics to cycloalkanes under moderate conditions

Abstract:We report a continuous selective hydrodeoxygenation (HDO) process of guaiacol conversion to cycloalkanes under 180 °C/1 MPa, which results in improved HDO chemistry for lignin-based jet fuel production. The incipient wetness impregnation method was modified to prepare an HY zeolite-supported Ru catalyst with better metal dispersion and acid site uniformity, which overcomes the low conversion and selectivity of previous literature. The modified catalyst (Ru-HY-60-MI) was tested in a continuous fixed bed reactor, resulting in increased HDO conversion of guaiacol to cycloalkanes compared to the unmodified catalyst. Pressure, temperature, and weight hourly space velocity-dependent tests validate guaiacol HDO over Ru-HY-60-MI catalyzed ring hydrogenation of guaiacol to 2-methoxycyclohexanol, acid-catalyzed demethoxylation and dehydration to cyclohexene, and further hydrogenation of cyclohexene to cyclohexane. These experiments enable exploring a continuous HDO process, demonstrate effectiveness for other β-β and α-O-4 lignin representatives and real lignin bio-oil, and pave the way towards commercialization of lignin-based jet fuel.

Abstract:Hydrodeoxygenation (HDO) of lignin-derived phenolics is promising to produce high-value-added chemicals and liquid fuels. As a strong oxophilic support, Nb2O5 maintains high catalytic activity for the deoxygenation of oxygen-rich reactants, while few studies have clarified the influence of crystal structures on reactivity. In this study, the Nb2O5 supports with three crystal structures (pseudohexagonal-TT, orthorhombic-T, and monoclinic-H) were successfully prepared and used for the HDO of lignin-derived phenolics after loading bimetal Ni and Co. The structural properties and acidity of the supports and catalysts gradually deteriorated with the increase in calcination temperatures. The oxygen vacancy content and the interaction strength between supports and active metals followed the rule of Nb2O5-TT > Nb2O5-T> Nb2O5-H. In addition, oxygen vacancy content also had a volcanic relationship with the catalyst reduction times. Then, the catalytic activity of the catalysts was studied in the HDO reaction of guaiacol. The 10Ni-10Co/Nb2O5-TT (450 degrees C) catalyst exhibited the best catalytic performance with a complete conversion of reactant and a high cycloalkane selectivity of 98.6% under optimal conditions (250 degrees C, 3 MPa H-2, and 3 h). More importantly, recycle tests indicated that it also had excellent stability. Moreover, other typical lignin-derived monomers and dimers were selected to test the reactant adaptability of the catalyst, and the selectivities of cycloalkanes also verged on the theoretical value. Therefore, the bifunctional catalyst composed of oxophilic Nb2O5-TT (450 degrees C) support and high-efficiency active metals possessed strong competitiveness in the HDO of lignin-derived phenolics.

Abstract:Hydrodeoxygenation (HDO) is a common strategy for upgrading lignin‐derived phenolic compounds into high‐quality liquid fuels, and the support rational design of HDO catalysts is critical to achieve a good reaction performance. This work proposed a novel Ru‐based catalyst with biochar and Al2O3 as composite support. The addition of biochar can enlarge the porous structure, and the addition of Al2O3 can enhance the acid property of the support. By regulating the content of biochar and Al2O3 components, Ru/CA‐2 catalyst achieved the best HDO performance of lignin‐derived phenolic compounds, with the optimal component balance of 50%C and 50%Al2O3. This catalyst possesses the high Ru metal dispersion (1.38 nm particle size) to activate the hydrogen source, the moderate acid property to suppress carbon deposition and the abundant oxygen vacancy to promote substrate adsorption at the same time. 99.9% conversion of guaiacol is obtained at 230 °C, with 99.9% selectivity towards cyclohexane. Ru/CA‐2 catalyst also has a good recyclability, with no obvious activity loss after five runs. Furthermore, in the application of catalytic lignin‐oil HDO, the content of hydrocarbons increase from 10.69% to 95.71%, showing great potential on the industrial usage.

Abstract:We report atomically dispersed Pt sites anchored on polyoxometalate cesium salts as robust and durable catalysts for upgrading lignin into hydrocarbons at relatively mild conditions. Experimental results and DFT calculations cross-validate the catalytic performance, considering the porosity, acidity, H2 storage capacity, and HOMO-LUMO energy gap of these catalysts. The optimal Pt0.4/CsPW-H2 catalyst enables the hydrodeoxygenation (HDO) of a diverse range of lignin-derived phenolics into hydrocarbons with up to 97% yield at the conditions of 150 °C and 0.1 to 2MPa H2. A lignin oil from the reductive catalytic fractionation (RCF) of Eucalyptus wood can be transformed into cyclohexanes with a 32.7wt% yield under a solvent-free condition. This catalyst demonstrates excellent reusability in the HDO of 4-propyl guaiacol for 20 cycles, achieving a 15095 molpropylcyclohexane molPt-1 total turnover number (TON). This work broadens the horizons of designing highly efficient catalytic systems aimed at sustainably producing liquid fuels from lignin.

Abstract:Hydrodeoxygenation (HDO) reaction is a necessary refinery process for lignin-derived phenolic compounds to be used as high quality liquid fuels. Catalyst morphology makes a big difference on the HDO performance through changing the properties of metal site and acid site, while the catalytic mechanism is still not very clear. In this work, four kinds of Ru/TiO2 catalysts with different morphology were prepared by photochemical method and all of them achieved a high Ru metal dispersion. A series of catalyst characterizations were carried out, including XRD, BET, SEM, TEM, H2-TPD and NH3-TPD, in order to explore the crystal structure, surface property, Ru metal dispersion, hydrogen adsorption capacity as well as acid properties. Results showed that Ru/TNP catalyst possessed a large surface area, an abundance of medium strength acid sites and a good hydrogen adsorption capacity. The HDO performances on lignin-derived phenolic compounds were also compared, in which Ru/TNP catalyst presented the best HDO performance. The guaiacol conversion and the selectivity of cyclohexane product were both close to 100 % at 250 °C under 1 MPa hydrogen pressure. Moreover, the content of hydrocarbons increased from 11.1 % to 60.8 % in the lignin-oil upgrading process.

Abstract:Cyclanes, a major component of aviation fuel, can be obtained from the catalytic hydrodeoxygenation (HDO) of lignin, which not only reduces the dependence on fossil resources, but also makes lignin refining economically viable. The adsorption capacity and dwell times of reactants and H 2 on the catalyst play a key role in the HDO of lignin. It remains a difficult challenge to enhance the adsorption capacity of the catalyst for reactants and H 2 and to prolong their extended dwell times on the catalyst. Based on this, a nickel-based catalyst with moderate corrosion was prepared by the dissolution of ZSM-5 single crystals induced by ammonia, and was used for value-added conversion of lignin. It was confirmed by experiments and complementary characterizations that the corrosion of Ni/ZSM-5 for etching 2 h (Ni/ZSM-5 2 ) enhanced the adsorption capacity of H 2 and extended the dwell times of the reactant and H 2 . Furthermore, the uniformly dispersed Ni nanoparticles stimulated the intrinsic catalytic activity and efficiently generated H ... H and H + , which synergistically promote the HDO of lignin with the cyclanes yield up to 58.6 %. As a result, BOB was completely converted to cyclanes over Ni/ZSM-5 2 at 140 °C under 2 MPa of H 2 for 4 h, suggesting Ni/ZSM-5 2 exhibits excellent HDO activity under mild conditions.

Abstract:Catalytic hydrodeoxygenation (HDO) is a critical technique for upgrading biomass derivatives to deoxygenated fuels or other high-value compounds. Phenol, guaiacol, anisole, p-cresol, m-cresol and vanillin are all monomeric phenolics produced from lignin. Guaiacol is often utilised as a model lignin compound to deduce mechanistic information about the bio-oil upgrading process. Typically, a source of H2 is supplied as reactant for the HDO reaction. However, the H2 supply, due to the high cost of production and additional safety precautions needed for storage and transportation, imposes significant economic infeasibilities on the HDO process's scaling up. We investigated a novel H2-free hydrodeoxygenation (HDO) reaction of guaiacol at low temperatures and pressures, using water as both a reaction medium and hydrogen source. A variety of Ni catalysts supported on zirconia/ graphene/with/without nitrogen doping were synthesised and evaluated at 250 degrees C and 300 degrees C in a batch reactor, with the goal of performing a multi-step tandem reaction including water splitting followed by HDO. The catalysts were characterised using H2-TPR, XRD, TEM and XPS to better understand the physicochemical properties and their correlation with catalytic performance of the samples in the HDO process. Indeed, our NiZr2O/Gr-n present the best activity/selectivity balance and it is deemed as a promising catalyst to conduct the H2-free HDO reaction. The catalyst reached commendable conversion levels and selectivity to mono-oxygenated compounds considering the very challenging reaction conditions. This innovative HDO approach provides a new avenue for cost-effective biomass upgrading.
