Abstract:X-ray powder diffraction was used for the structural study of nonlinear optical borates K1−xNaxSr4(BO3)3 (x≤0.5). Results show that up to 50% K+ can be substituted by Na+ in orthorhombic K1−xNaxSr4(BO3)3. Isolated BO3 triangles in the Na-substituted compound constrict to adjust to a local distribution of alkali-metal atoms, which explains the large range of structural homogeneity. An expansion of the c axis in a unit cell with increasing Na substitution was found probably caused by the tilted BO3 triangles and asymmetric distortion of (K/Na)O8 polyhedra. As the ratio of ionic radii of alkaline-earth and alkali-metal cations decreases and the electronegative difference between alkaline-earth and alkali-metal cations increases, the crystal system of MM′4(BO3)3 borates changes from cubic to orthorhombic and then to monoclinic.

Abstract:A new compound, LiCaBO3, has been identified in the system Li2O–CaO–B2O3 and high-quality single crystals were obtained by the flux method. Its structure has been solved and refined from single crystal and powder X-ray diffraction data, respectively. This compound crystallizes in an orthorhombic unit cell (space group Pbca) with lattice parameters a=13.227(13)Å, b=6.1675(6)Å, and c=6.0620(6)Å. There are 8 formulas per unit cell and 6 unique atoms sites in the unit. Its structure is stacked alternately with [LiBO] and [CaO] layers along the [100] direction. In the [LiBO] layers, the isolated [BO3]3− anionic groups, distributed along two directions, [011] and [01̄1], are almost perpendicular to each other. The differences among the structures of the four compounds, LiCaBO3, LiMgBO3, LiSrBO3 and LiBaBO3 have been discussed, and the infrared spectra of LiCaBO3 has also been researched, which is consistent with the crystallographic study.

Abstract:A novel orthoborate, NaSrBO3, has been successfully synthesized by standard solid-state reaction, and the crystal structure has been determined from powder X-ray diffraction data. It crystallizes in the monoclinic space group P21/c with lattice parameters: a=5.32446(7)Å, b=9.2684(1)Å, c=6.06683(8)Å, β=100.589(1)°. The fundamental building units are isolated BO3 groups, which are parallelly distributed along two different directions. Because of the anisotropic polarizations of planar BO3 groups, a considerable birefringence can be expected in it. The Na atoms are six-coordinated with O atoms to form octahedra, and the Sr atoms are nine-coordinated, forming tri-capped trigonal prisms. Those polyhedra connect with each other by bridging-oxygen atoms, forming infinite three-dimensional network, which indicates that the cleaving problem is expected to be overcome during the course of single-crystal growth. The infrared spectrum has been measured, and the result is consistent with the crystallographic study. Moreover, a comparison of the new structure type with the other known orthoborates is presented here.

Abstract:Three bismuth borates, Bi[B4O6(OH)(2)]OH (I), BiB2O4F (II), and Bi-3[B6O13(OH)] (III), were obtained in boric acid flux at low temperatures and their structures were determined by using single-crystal and powder X-ray diffraction techniques. All these three bismuth borates contain one-dimensional borate chains and crystallize in noncentrosymmetric space groups. I is a hydrated borate, crystallizing, in the space group PI with lattice constants a = 4.300(1) angstrom, b = 8.587(2) angstrom, c = 10.518(2) angstrom, alpha = 113.11(3)', 100.50(3)degrees, and beta = 90.36(3)degrees, and the borate chain consists of a 3-ring (2BO(3) + BO4) and a BO3 group. II is a fluoroborate, which crystallizes in the trigonal space group P3(2) with a = 6.7147(1) angstrom and c = 6.4688(1) angstrom, and the borate anion is a 3-fold helix chain formed by extensive linkage of three-membered borate rings (3BO(4)). III is also a hydrated borate with a structure that is closely related to 11, in which one-sixth of the borate groups are in triangular geometry (BOA which reduces the symmetry to P1, a = 6.6257(1) angstrom, b =6.6238(1) angstrom, c = 6.6541(1) angstrom, and alpha = 89.998(3)degrees, beta = 89.982(2)degrees, and gamma = 119.992(2)degrees. All these three bismuth borates exhibit nonlinear optical (NLO) properties.

Abstract:Using hydrothermal techniques, two new compounds-strontium borate SrBO2(OH) and barium polyborate Ba3B6O9(OH)(6)-have been prepared. The structures of the title compounds were solved by single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. In the structure of SrBO2(OH), the Sr2+ ion is surrounded by eight oxygen atoms and the borate ion is identified as an individual [BO2(OH)](2-) group. The structure of Ba3B6O9(OH)(6) can be regarded as constructed from anionic borate chains, the negative charges of which are compensated for by the Ba2+ cations residing between the adjacent chains. The unusual feature of this compound can also be described in terms of infinite chains of B3O3 six-membered rings sharing B atoms, which are all tetrahedrally coordinated by oxygen atoms. The materials have also been characterized by infrared and energy dispersive spectroscopies, thermal analysis, and second harmonic generation powder measurement.

Abstract:Sodium strontium pentaborate, Na(3)SrB(5)O(10), maintains the same, previously unobserved, structure type at 200, 250 and 293 K. The fundamental building units are anionic [B(5)O(10)](5-) groups distorted from mm2 point symmetry. The Sr atoms are eightfold coordinated by O atoms, forming trigonal dodecahedra. The Na atoms appear in three crystallographically different environments. The present single-crystal results correct a previous report in which a monoclinic cell was deduced for this compound on the basis of powder diffraction data. The structure of the title compound is discussed in the crystalochemical context of other borates with the same formula type. Although the unit cell of the present compound is similar to that determined in a previous study of the analogous Ca-containing compound, this study demonstrates that the structures of the two are different. These novel alkali-alkaline earth borates are considered as potential host materials for optical applications (fluorescence materials or phosphors).

Abstract:A series of new polyborates have been synthesized using hydrothermal and solvothermal techniques. The structures of these compounds were solved by single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. The compound Pb6B11O18(OH)(9) (1), which crystallized from a hydrothermall system in the trigonal P3(2) space group, has a novel chiral structure consisting of infinite helical chains and finite chain fragments built up from BO4 and BO3 units. Two alkaline-earth metal borate compounds Ba3B6O9(OH)(6) (2) and SrBO2(OH) (3) were also prepared from a hydrothermal system. The structure of 2 (space group P2/c) can be regarded as constructed from anionic borate chains of B3O3 Six-membered rings sharing B atoms, which are all tetrahedrally coordinated by oxygen atoms. In the structure of 3 (space group Prima), the Sr2+ ion is surrounded by eight oxygen atoms and the borate ion is identified as an isolated [BO2(OH)](2-) group. In addition, we obtained two metal-complex containing borates - Zn(C2H8N2)(3)B5O7(OH)(3) (4) and CO(C2H8N2)(3)B5O7(OH)(3) (5), which are isostructural (space group P2(1)/c) with each other, from a nonaqueous system. The crystal structures of 4 and 5 are characterized by the chiral M(en)(3)(2+) (M = Zn, Co) cations and the isolated B5O7(OH)(3)(2-) groups. It can be seen that the wide variability of borate crystal chemistry allows the creation of very different structure types.

Abstract:Three new complex borate compounds K7CaBi2B15O30, K7CaLa2B15O30 and K7BaBi2B15O30 have been synthesized by the high-temperature solution method. K7CaLa2B15O30 and K7CaBi2B15O30 crystallize in the chiral trigonal space group R32, while K7BaBi2B15O30 crystallizes in the noncentrosymmetric orthorhombic polar space group Pca21. All of the title compounds have similar three-dimensional crystal structures, which are composed of isolated B5O10 groups and LaO6 or BiO6 octahedra, and K+, Ca2+, and Ba2+ cations fill into the cavities to keep charge balance. Based on our research, in the system of K7MIIRE2B15O30 (MII = Ca, Sr, Ba, Zn, Cd, Pb, K/RE0.5; RE = Sc, Y, La, Gd, Lu, Bi), K7BaBi2B15O30 is unique and crystallizes in a different space group, which enriches the structural chemistry of borate. Detailed structural analyses indicate that the structural variation is due to the difference in size and coordination number of the alkaline-earth metal cations. Besides, UV-Vis-NIR spectroscopy analysis and the second-harmonic generation (SHG) measurement on the powder samples show that K7CaBi2B15O30 exhibits a UV cutoff edge (about 282 nm) and a moderate SHG response (about 0.6 × KDP). In addition, thermal analysis and infrared spectroscopy were also presented. To better understand the structure-property relationships of the title compounds, the first-principles calculations have been performed.

Abstract:Two alkali metal and alkaline-earth metal borates, ACaBO(3) (A = Cs, Rb), were synthesized by a high temperature solution method. The powder SHG response of CsCaBO3 is approximately one time that of KH2PO4 (KDP), and its experimental band gap is 4.20 eV. The SHG density calculations indicate that the SHG effect originates from the synergistic effect of B-O and Ca-O groups. The two compounds crystallize in the cubic space group P2(1)3 and their structures feature a 3D framework composed of the CaO6 octahedra, the CsO9 polyhedra and the BO3 triangles. However, borates containing anisotropic planar BO3 triangles exhibit difficulty in forming an isotropic cubic structure. Through our investigation on all the ordered cubic structures with the BO3 or the B2O5 (composed of two BO3) groups, the MO6 octahedra play important role in their structure formations. This discovery is essential for the design of new cubic borates containing the BO3 triangles.

Abstract:A new mixed borate and carbonate Sr5(CO3)2(BO3)2, which is isostructural with Ba4M(BO3)2(CO3)2 (M = Ba, Sr), has been synthesized by hydrothermal method. It crystallizes in Pnma (No. 61) space group with the lattice parameters a = 7.387(4), b = 16.556(9) and c = 8.971(5) Å (Z = 4). This structure features a three-dimensional (3D) network including SrO8 polyhedra, isolated BO3 and CO3 triangles. UV-Vis-NIR diffuse reflectance spectrum for Sr5(CO3)2(BO3)2 indicates that it has a deep ultra-violet cut-off edge of 190 nm. In addition, crystal structural comparison among mixed borates and carbonates shows that the interaction between boron-oxide groups and CO3 groups leads to different arrangements of anionic groups, which can be classified into three types according to the connection of boron-oxide groups. An analysis of theoretical calculations based on density functional theory was also performed to understand the relationships between the structures and properties.
