Abstract:The structural stability, electronic structure, and superconductivity of cubic sodium hexaboride NaB6 are calculated from first principles using density functional theory (DFT). The calculations of phonon dispersion spectra, formation energy, and elastic constants indicate that the cubic NaB6 is dynamically, thermodynamically, and mechanically stable, respectively. The cubic NaB6 has lower formation energy compared with the experimentally synthesized KB6. The calculated band structure and PDOS demonstrate the metallicity of NaB6. The superconducting transition temperatures at ambient pressure for NaB6 and KB6 are predicted to be 15.7 K with lambda= 0.60 and 14.6 K with lambda= 0.57, respectively.

Among them, chiral materials exhibit polarization rotation and host topological properties. Borates often contribute to NCS and chiral structures via their triangular [BO3] and tetrahedral [BO4] units and their numerous superstructure motifs. However, no chiral compound with the linear [BO2] unit has been reported to date. Herein, an NCS and chiral mixed-alkali-metal borate, NaRb6(B4O5(OH)4)3(BO2), with a linear BO2- unit in the structure was synthesized and characterized. The structure features a combination of three types of basic building units (BBUs), [BO2], [BO3], and [BO4] with sp-, sp2-, and sp3-hybridization of boron atoms, respectively. It crystallizes in the trigonal space group R32 (No. 155), one of the 65 Sohncke space groups. Two enantiomers of NaRb6(B4O5(OH)4)3(BO2) were found, and their crystallographic relationships are discussed. These results not only expand the small family of NCS structures with the rare linear BO2- unit but also prompt recognition to the fact that NLO materials have generally overlooked the existence of two enantiomers in achiral Sohncke space groups.

Abstract:A new metal methanesulfonate-derived borate compound, Na(S(OH)3CH3)(BO3) (NMSB), was successfully synthesized. NMSB crystallizes in the cubic and acentric space group P213 (no. 198) and may be grown as large, high-quality millimeter to centimeter-sized crystals through spontaneous crystallization under ambient conditions [a = 8.7714(2) Å, Z = 4]. NMSB exhibits a three-dimensional structure composed of a new methylsulfanetriol functional group, [S(OH)3CH3]2+, and extended H-bonding with planar [BO3]3- groups. The framework is formed by the Lewis acid-base reaction of SO: → HOB, structurally and charge-balanced by distorted NaO6 octahedra. The composition, structure, and facet-indices are confirmed by SC-XRD, PXRD, EDS, and FT-IR spectroscopy. UV-vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy shows that NMSB is transparent in the UV-vis region with an optical absorption edge in the deep-UV region, λabs < 200 nm. NMSB is thermally stable up to 200 °C and is highly soluble in water. This new compound exhibits unique borate chemistry as well as insights into underexplored methanesulfonate-derived salts as optical materials.

Abstract:In this paper, we present a new method to synthesize the quasi-one-dimensional (1D) BaCoO3 single crystal using (NaOH+KOH) flux at ambient pressure. Composition analysis showed that the crystal was stoichiometric. The structure was determined by single crystal x-ray diffraction. This study sheds new light on the synthesis of the low dimensional cobalt oxides. At the end, the physical properties were investigated in BaCoO3 single crystal. It was found that the titled compound is electrically insulating with a gap of 61meV along the chain.

Abstract:Borates, as advanced optical materials, have garnered wide interest due to their diverse structural configurations and great potential for applications in the ultraviolet (UV) regions. Herein, we synthesized a new rare-earth borate crystal, namely, K2NaYB2O6, which is classified as one of the ABReB2O6 compounds, where A and B represent alkali metal and Re denotes rare-earth metal. K2NaYB2O6 adopts in the monoclinic space group P21/c (No. 14), showcasing a three-dimensional (3D) framework composed of a planar triangular configuration of [BO3] units and distortive [YO7] polyhedra. Notably, both dihedral angles between distinct [BO3] units reach 79.6°, which represents an unprecedented structural feature in monoclinic ABReB2O6-type crystals. Moreover, the compound has a short UV absorption edge at around 204 nm, corresponding to a wide band gap of approximately 5.67 eV. Additionally, it possesses a moderate birefringence of 0.028 at 1064 nm. Further analysis utilizing theoretical calculations suggests that the optical behaviors of K2NaYB2O6 are mainly governed by its basic structural unit [BO3] triangles and distorted [YO7] polyhedra. These findings enrich the structure chemistry of rare-earth borates and offer valuable insights for the design of optical crystals in the UV wavelength range.

Abstract:Two borates, K3Al2B11O21 (KABO) and K3Al2MoB9O21 (KAMBO), with edge-sharing [BO4] (ES-[BO4]) tetrahedra and different B-O configuration in one structure, were rationally designed and prepared at atmospheric pressure by introducing covalent tetrahedra. KABO is the first borate identified to have ES-[BO4] tetrahedra and two different dimensional B-O groups, namely, isolated [B6O12] groups with ES-[BO4] and one-dimensional 1∞[B5O9] infinite chains. In addition, KAMBO is a rare borate that features ES-[BO4] tetrahedra and two distinct isolated B-O groups ([B6O12] and [B3O6]). The discovery of these two compounds not only enriches the structures of borates, but also suggests a novel method for creating borates with ES-[BO4] tetrahedral structures and flexible B-O configuration at atmospheric pressure.

Abstract:Enthusiasm for the exploration of nonlinear alkali metal borates remains high. Focusing on the Li-B-O-X (X = Cl and Br) system, two examples of noncentrosymmetric borates, Li3B8O13Cl and Li3B8O13Br, were obtained using a high-temperature solution method under vacuum conditions. Structurally, the Li3B8O13X crystals exhibit two independent alternately arranged three-dimensional B-O network structures formed by the basic building block unit B8O16. The performance measurements demonstrate their short ultraviolet cutoff edges. The theoretical calculation indicates that the BO3 units dominate the contribution to their large optical anisotropy with the birefringence, 0.094 and 0.088@1064 nm for Li3B8O13Cl and Li3B8O13Br, respectively.

Abstract:A new non-centrosymmetric hydroxyl alkali metal borate LiNaRbB5O8(OH)(2) has been grown under mild hydrothermal conditions at 220 degrees C. LiNaRbB5O8(OH)(2) belongs to the orthorhombic space group Aba2, with a = 11.3017(5) angstrom, b = 10.9956(5) angstrom, c = 9.2860(4) angstrom, and Z = 2. The crystal structure of LiNaRbB5O8(OH)(2) consists of Li/Na-O, Rb-O polyhedra, and [B5O8(OH)(2)](3-) groups. The transmittance spectrum of the LiNaRbB5O8(OH)(2) exhibits an absorption edge less than 200 nm in the UV region. The powder second-harmonic generation coefficient in LiNaRbB5O8(OH)(2) is about one-third that of KH2PO4 (KDP) based the Kurtz-Perry method. First principle calculations based on band structure, density of states, and optical properties are used to better understand the relationship between electronic structure and optical properties.

Abstract:Fluorooxoborates are promising yet largely untapped crystal materials for linear and nonlinear optical applications. The introduction of a strong electronegative F atom into an oxyboron anionic group offers a virtually unlimited chance for structural engineering and ultimately purposeful tuning of the macroscopic optical properties of the crystal. Herein, a new mixed alkali/alkaline-earth fluorooxoborate, Na2BaB12O18F4, was synthesized in a closed system. Na2BaB12O18F4 features a [B6O11F2] fundamental building unit (FBB), which polymerizes into two new (first example) independent interpenetrating three-dimensional (3D) B-O/F anionic networks constructed entirely from BO3 and BO3F units. Based on optical characterizations and the first-principles calculations, Na2BaB12O18F4 exhibits a moderate birefringence (0.054 @ 1064 nm) and a short ultraviolet (UV) cutoff edge (below 190 nm). The successful synthesis and characterization of Na2BaB12O18F4 may speed up the subsequent discovery of other mixed alkali/alkaline-earth metal fluorooxoborates.

Abstract:A new mixed-metal polyborate, Na5Li[B12O18(OH)(6)]center dot 2H(2)O (1), has been synthesized using solvothermal method and characterized by IR spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, UVeVis spectroscopy, powder and single-crystal X-ray diffraction, respectively. It crystallizes in the trigonal space group R-3c (No. 167) with unit cell parameters of a = b = 9.6767(6) angstrom, c = 36.358(5) angstrom, and Z = 6. Its structure features unprecedented 3D framework constructed from novel honeycomb-shaped inorganic Na-O sheets with unique 12-MR sodium rings and supramolecular polyborate 2D layers of lithium-centered [B12O18(OH)(6)](6-). Abstract:Yb26B12O57, a rare earth oxyborate previously assigned as Yb3BO6, has been studied by various techniques including neutron and X-ray diffraction, 11B NMR spectroscopy, electron diffraction and high angle angular dark field-scanning transmission electron microscopy (HADDF-STEM). It crystallizes in the space group C2/m with cell parameters of a=24.5780(4)Å, b=3.58372(5)Å, c=14.3128(3)Å and β=115.079(1)°. The structure consists of slabs of rare earth sesquioxide and borate groups. The sesquioxide part is identified from the structural refinement, and is observed from HADDF-STEM image, while elucidation of borate groups is not straightforward. An additional oxygen atom (O31), which links two B2O5 groups into a B4O11 polyanion, is identified from the analysis of neutron diffraction data. The occupancy of this oxygen site is only quarter, which results in a random distribution of B4O11 and B2O5 groups along the b-direction. The chemical formula of ytterbium oxyborate is Yb26(BO3)4(B2O5)2(B4O11)O24, instead of the simple stoichiometric formula Yb3BO6. This compound is paramagnetic but its susceptibility deviated from the Curie–Weiss law at low temperature.

Abstract:A new kind of borate crystalline material Sr3(BO3)2 with a similar calcite type structure was designed and synthesized by solid state reaction method, moreover, the single crystal growth was attempted with traditional Czochralski pulling method. Crystal phase of Sr3(BO3)2 was investigated by using X-Ray powder diffraction (XRPD) at room temperature and found similar to Ca3(BO3)2 crystal with space group of R-3c. The phase stability was studied by means of thermogravimetric differential thermal analysis (TG/DTA) and high temperature XRPD up to 1350 °C, where an obvious endothermic peak was observed in DTA curve around 1250 °C, and weak splits of diffraction peaks were found at temperatures above 1250 °C, indicating the existence of structure transformation for Sr3(BO3)2 crystal. Raman properties were studied experimentally and theoretically by using density functional perturbation theory, though the strongest frequency shift of Sr3(BO3)2 crystal (900 cm−1) was comparable to that of Ca3(BO3)2 (927 cm−1), the line width of the strongest Raman peak obtained for Sr3(BO3)2 (5.72 cm−1) was much lower than Ca3(BO3)2 (7.01 cm−1), indicating a larger Raman gain for Sr3(BO3)2 crystal, which would be favorable for stimulated Raman scattering application.

Abstract:Three bismuth borates, Bi[B4O6(OH)(2)]OH (I), BiB2O4F (II), and Bi-3[B6O13(OH)] (III), were obtained in boric acid flux at low temperatures and their structures were determined by using single-crystal and powder X-ray diffraction techniques. All these three bismuth borates contain one-dimensional borate chains and crystallize in noncentrosymmetric space groups. I is a hydrated borate, crystallizing, in the space group PI with lattice constants a = 4.300(1) angstrom, b = 8.587(2) angstrom, c = 10.518(2) angstrom, alpha = 113.11(3)', 100.50(3)degrees, and beta = 90.36(3)degrees, and the borate chain consists of a 3-ring (2BO(3) + BO4) and a BO3 group. II is a fluoroborate, which crystallizes in the trigonal space group P3(2) with a = 6.7147(1) angstrom and c = 6.4688(1) angstrom, and the borate anion is a 3-fold helix chain formed by extensive linkage of three-membered borate rings (3BO(4)). III is also a hydrated borate with a structure that is closely related to 11, in which one-sixth of the borate groups are in triangular geometry (BOA which reduces the symmetry to P1, a = 6.6257(1) angstrom, b =6.6238(1) angstrom, c = 6.6541(1) angstrom, and alpha = 89.998(3)degrees, beta = 89.982(2)degrees, and gamma = 119.992(2)degrees. All these three bismuth borates exhibit nonlinear optical (NLO) properties.

Abstract:Binary borides has been a subject of extensive research. However, the exact compositions and crystal structures of sodium borides remained controversial. Here, using the ab initio variable-composition evolutionary algorithm, a new stable Na2B30 with I2(1)2(1)2(1) symmetry (I2(1)2(1)2(1)-Na2B30) is found, which is -7.38 meV/atom lower in energy than the Imma-Na2B30 structure reported by experimentalists. Interestingly, the Imma-Na2B30 structure is predicted to be a topological nodal line semimetal, which may result in superior electronic transport. In contrast, I2(1)2(1)2(1)-Na2B30 is an ultrahard semiconductor with an unprecedented open-framework structure, whose interstitial helical boron sublattice enhances its hardness and energetic stability.

Abstract:Abstract More than 3900 crystalline borates, including borate minerals and synthetic inorganic borates, in addition to a wealth of industrially-important boron-containing glasses, have been discovered and characterized. Of these compounds, 99.9 % contain only the traditional triangular BO 3 and tetrahedral BO 4 units, which polymerize into superstructural motifs. Herein, a mixed metal K 5 Ba 2 (B 10 O 17 ) 2 (BO 2 ) with linear BO 2 structural units was obtained, pushing the boundaries of structural diversity and providing a direct strategy toward the maximum thresholds of birefringence for optical materials design. 11 B solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) is a ubiquitous tool in the study of glasses and optical materials; here, density functional theory-based NMR crystallography guided the direct characterization of BO 2 structural units. The full anisotropic shift and quadrupolar tensors of linear BO 2 were extracted from K 5 Ba 2 (B 10 O 17 ) 2 (BO 2 ) containing BO 2 , BO 3 , and BO 4 and serve as guides to the identification of this powerful moiety in future and, potentially, previously-characterized borate minerals, ceramics, and glasses.
