Abstract:Recent research in the deep-sea has identified rich ore deposits that may be economically extractable through the development of a deep-sea mining (DSM) industry.The poly-metallic nodule has the potential to become a significant mineral resource.The development of deep sea mining is limited by the execrable,dynamic and complex environment.The aiming mining tenements are located deep seabed with operations taking place in an environment with extreme conditions with many uncertainties about potential environmental impacts.So modeling and simulation of deep sea mining system has become a promising approach to develop,analyze and illustrate the mining procedure.The concept and prototype for environmental impact modeling and simulation of a test mining system were proposed by the COMRA (China Ocean Mineral Resources R D Association) integrated with the investigated data of the working area.The purpose of the project is to provide reasonable modeling and simulation system as a case study to recognize and illustrate the primary deep sea environmental issues surrounding DSM.In the prototype system six HLA Federations were developed and executed standing for poly-metallic nodule pilot mining procedure.Along with the HLA simulation procedure of mining,the impact of deep sea environment was run through message exchange,time management,federal control and visualization based on RTI.The environmental federal is constructed under the model of deep sea environment.

Furthermore, it presents a comprehensive analysis of the historical development of deep-sea mining technology and equipment, offering valuable insights into this field. By examining the current issues and obstacles faced in deep-sea mineral extraction, this study concludes that the future of deep-sea mining lies in the direction of automation, intelligence, and standardization. Additionally, it identifies the key technological advancements that need to be achieved in order to overcome the challenges associated with deep-sea mining.

Abstract:Ocean mining activities have been ongoing for nearly 70 years, making great contributions to industrialization. Given the increasing demand for energy, along with the restructuring of the energy supply catalyzed by efforts to achieve a low-carbon economy, deep seabed mining will play an important role in addressing energy- and resource-related problems in the future. However, deep seabed mining remains in the exploratory stage, with many challenges presented by the high-pressure, low-temperature, and complex geologic and hydrodynamic environments in deep-sea mining areas, which are inaccessible to human activities. Thus, considerable efforts are required to ensure sustainable, economic, reliable, and safe deep seabed mining. This study reviews the latest advances in marine engineering geology and the environment related to deep-sea mining activities, presents a bibliometric analysis of the development of ocean mineral resources since the 1950s, summarizes the development, theory, and issues related to techniques for the three stages of ocean mining (i.e., exploration, extraction, and closure), and discusses the engineering geology environment, geological disasters, in-situ monitoring techniques, environmental protection requirements, and environmental effects in detail. Finally, this paper gives some key conclusions and future perspectives to provide insights for subsequent studies and commercial mining operations.

Abstract:Deep-sea polymetallic nodules are a mineral resource with potential for commercial development. Due to the unique deep-sea environment in which they are found, specialized technology and equipment are required for their extraction. In this paper, firstly, the development of deep-sea polymetallic nodule mining technology is classified into three stages, and its characteristics are summarized. Moreover, the results from research into deep-sea polymetallic nodule mining technology are analyzed, including proposals for mining systems, research into key technologies, basic scientific problems, and proof of technical feasibility from sea tests. Secondly, the testing of the collector prototype and the environmental impact assessment study of Global Sea Mineral Resources NV, as well as the progress of the deep-sea polymetallic nodule mining test project in China, are introduced. On this basis, the opportunities and challenges brought by the fast-growing demand for electric vehicles to the development of deep-sea polymetallic mining technology is analyzed, and a possible technical scheme for a mining system and the trends in its development towards high reliability and high standards of environmental protection according to the requirements of commercial exploitation are explored. This provides a reference for the research and development of high-efficiency technology and equipment for the mining of deep-sea polymetallic nodules.

Abstract:The review covers the development and the state of the art in deep-sea mining rock mechanics, equipment and challenges. It begins by introducing the significance of deep-sea mining, the types and geographical distribution of deep-sea resources. Section 2 reviews the mechanical properties and fracture mechanism of seabed and related continental rocks, which contributes to the advancement of relevant technologies and theories. Deep-sea mining systems developed by coastal countries are presented in Section 3. Seabed mineral collection system are critically assessed in Section 4. Subsea mining vehicle is reviewed by walking mechanism and controlling system in Section 5. In Section 6, the development of subsea lifting system is detailed by dividing it into hydraulic and pneumatic lifting modes, and some technical problems in the lifting system are described. An in-depth description of surface support systems is presented in Section 7, which includes the deep-sea mining ship, dynamic positioning, heave compensation, launch and retrieval, mineral disposing as well as the storage and transferring systems. Section 8 discusses the challenges in the deep-sea mining, in terms of natural occurrence conditions, international legal framework and cooperative mining, environmental protection and economic benefits, etc. Finally, a brief summary and some aspects of prospective research are presented in Section 9.

Introduction to Concurrent Mining and Reclamation for Coal Mines in China

Abstract:Mining subsidence land reclamation was focused on stable land for the past 30 years in China. In eastern China, a relatively flat terrain and high groundwater table area, mining activities cause more than half of the subsided land submerged in water and the fertilized top soil was lost permanently, which leads to a low percentage of farmland reclamation and inevitably increases the reclamation cost. In this paper, a new technology and innovative concept of Concurrent Mining and Reclamation (CMR) was proposed, and its principles and key technologies of CMR for underground coal mining were presented. The advantages with high reclamation percentage of land resources for the new technology were proved based on a case study; CMR could increase farmland reclamation percentages to 37.59%, compared with the farmland reclamation percentage of post-mining. The scope and prospects of application of CMR were also discussed. CMR could be used in 5 of the 14 large coal bases in China. It is estimated that the application of CMR could increase land area by 6680.9 km2.

Abstract:The bottom of the ocean is rich in mineral resources, and deep-sea mining has been a research hotspot in recent years. As a key part of deep-sea mining operation, polymetallic nodule collection technology has been researched in many countries around the world. The distribution of deep-sea polymetallic nodule mining areas and the characteristics of nodules are summarized, which provides a reference for the study of collection technology and the optimization of pick-up device structure. In order to further establish a deep-sea mining collection technology system, the current development status of polymetallic nodule mechanical, mechanical–hydraulic composite and hydraulic collection technologies are summarized, and the analysis shows that hydraulic collection technology has a more promising commercialization prospect. For the hydraulic collection technology, the research progress of suck-up-based collection technology, Coandă-effect-based collection technology, double-row hydraulic collection sluicing technology and other collection technologies are summarized from three aspects: collecting principle, device structure parameter optimization, and sea trial situation, and the key technical problems of hydraulic ore collection are put forward. Through the comparative analysis of the pick-up efficiency, energy consumption, environmental disturbance and other performances of different devices, it is found that the Coandă-effect-based hydraulic collection technology has better comprehensive performance. A structural design evaluation indicator for the collection head of hydraulic collection technology is proposed, and the prospect of further research on hydraulic collection technology is put forward.

Abstract:The deep-sea is rich in mineral resources, and deep-sea polymetallic nodules are considered to be the most likely resource for commercial exploitation. Since the discovery of polymetallic nodules by mankind, researchers around the world have made long and arduous explorations in the exploitation of deep-sea polymetallic nodules and have proposed various mining methods, such as the dragging bucket type, the continuous bucket rope type, the automatic shuttle boat type, and the pipeline -lifting type, and have carried out technical verification accordingly. In the collection of seabed polymetallic nodules, the development and testing of towed type, spiral-driven type, crawler self-propelled type, and suspended type technologies have been carried out, basically realizing the mining technology verification of seabed polymetallic nodules and providing technical support for commercial development. However, according to the demand for commercial development, there are still many technical difficulties in polymetallic nodule-collecting technology, and more focus needs to be placed on the efficiency, environmental protection, intelligence, safety, and reliability of the collecting system in the future. This paper compares the existing progress in collection technology and equipment, and provides ideas and references for the research and development of deep-sea polymetallic nodule-mining technology and equipment.

Abstract:The deep seabed is known for its abundant reserves of various mineral resources. Notably, the Clarion Clipperton (C–C) mining area in the northeast Pacific Ocean, where China holds exploration rights, is particularly rich in deep-sea polymetallic nodules. These nodules, which are nodular and unevenly distributed in seafloor sediments, have significant industrial exploitation value. Over the decades, the deep-sea mining industry has increasingly adopted systems that combine rigid and flexible risers supported by large surface mining vessels. However, current systems face economic and structural stability challenges, hindering the development of deep-sea mining technology. This paper proposes a new structural design for a deep-sea mining system based on flexible risers, validated through numerical simulations and experimental research. The system composition, function and operational characteristics are comprehensively introduced. Detailed calculations determine the production capacity of the deep-sea mining system and the dimensions of the seabed mining subsystem. Finite element numerical simulations analyze the morphological changes of flexible risers and the stress conditions at key connection points under different ocean current incident angles. Experimental research verifies the feasibility of collaborative movement between two tethered underwater devices. The proposed deep-sea mining system, utilizing flexible risers, significantly advances the establishment of a commercial deep-sea mining system. The production calculations and parameter determinations provide essential references for the system's future detailed design. Furthermore, the finite element simulation model established in this paper provides a research basis, and the method established in this paper offers a foundation for subsequent research under more complex ocean conditions. The control strategy for the collaborative movement between two tethered underwater devices provides an effective solution for deep-sea mining control systems.

Abstract:Long-term and continuous large-scale exploitation has increasingly exhausted shallow metal mineral resources, and deep mining has become inevitable. The current global status of deep mining of metal mineral resources was presented, a series of engineering challenges faced by deep mining were systematically analyzed, and some progress and future innovation focus in key engineering technologies, such as the prediction and prevention of rockburst, cooling techniques, rock support techniques, deep hoisting techniques, and several nontraditional deep mining techniques, were highlighted. Meanwhile, new insights into development strategies of deep mining technology were proposed. The integration of these forward-looking key innovative technologies will form the overall framework of an innovative technology system for the deep mining of metal minerals. This technology system will help to achieve safe, efficient, and green exploitation of deep underground metal mineral resources and ensure the sustainable development of the metal mining industry.

Abstract:Based on a prospective trial on 91 patients diagnostic and therapeutic evaluation of ERCP in the early phase of acute pancreatitis was carried out. Detection of biliary stone disease and visualization of tumours of the papilla or main bile duct leads to therapeutic consequences (Papillotomy, exstirpation of the tumour). In addition to that, ERCP yields radiomorphologic informations, which seem to be typical for necrotizing pancreatitis. Showing a correlation to severity and prognosis of necrotizing pancreatitis these informations can be used for planning surgical tactics in the course of the disease.

Abstract:The deep-sea ground contains a huge amount of energy and mineral resources,for example,oil,gas,and minerals.Various infrastructures such as floating structures,seabed structures,and foundations have been developed to exploit these resources.The seabed structures and foundations can be mainly classified into three types:subsea production structures,offshore pipelines,and anchors.This study reviewed the development,installation,and operation of these infrastructures,including their structures,design,installation,marine environ-ment loads,and applications.On this basis,the research gaps and further research directions were explored through this literature review.First,different floating structures were briefly analyzed and reviewed to introduce the design require-ments of the seabed structures and foundations.Second,the subsea production structures,including subsea manifolds and their foundations,were reviewed and discussed.Third,the basic characteristics and design methods of deep-sea pipelines,including subsea pipelines and risers,were analyzed and reviewed.Finally,the installation and bearing capacity of deep-sea subsea anchors and seabed trench influence on the anchor were reviewed.Through the review,it was found that marine environment conditions are the key inputs for any offshore structure design.The fabrication,installation,and operation of infrastructures should carefully consider the marine loads and geological conditions.Different structures have their own mechanical problems.The fatigue and stability of pipelines mainly depend on the soil-structure interaction.Anchor selection should consider soil types and possible trench formation.These focuses and research gaps can provide a helpful guide on further research,installation,and operation of deep-sea structures and foundations.

Abstract:In response to the anticipated scarcity of terrestrial land resources in the coming years, the acquisition of marine mineral resources is imperative. This paper mainly summarizes the development of underwater collection and transportation equipment of polymetallic nodules in deep-sea mining. Firstly, the collection equipment is reviewed. The deep-sea mining vehicle (DSMV), as the key equipment of the collection equipment, mainly includes the collecting device and the walking device. The micro and macro properties of sediments have a great influence on the collection efficiency of mining vehicles. For the collecting device, the optimization of the jet head structure and the solid–liquid two-phase flow transport of the hose are discussed. The structure of the walking device restricts mining efficiency. The optimization of the geometric structure is studied, and the geometric passability and lightweight design of the walking device are discussed. Secondly, the core of transportation equipment is the lifting device composed of a riser and lifting pump. In order to explore the key factors affecting mineral transport, the lifting device is summarized, and the design optimization of the lifting pump and the factors affecting the stability of the riser are discussed. Then, the relationship between each device is discussed, and the overall coupling of the device is summarized. Finally, the existing problems and future research focus are summarized.

Abstract:Deep-ocean polymetallic nodules form on or just below the vast, sediment-covered, abyssal plains of the global ocean. Polymetallic nodules primarily consist of precipitated iron oxyhydroxides and manganese oxides, onto which metals such as nickel, cobalt, copper, titanium and rare earth elements sorb. The enormous tonnage of nodules on the seabed, and the immense quantities of critical metals that they contain, have made them a target for future mining operations. Mining of polymetallic nodules has been spurred by the need for critical metals to support growing populations, urbanization, high-technology applications and the development of a green-energy economy. Nevertheless, an improved understanding of the affected ecosystems and their connectivity, as well as the environmental impacts of deep-ocean mining, is required before operations begin. Opportunities exist, however, to ensure that this new industry applies adaptive management to continually refine operations with the goal of environmental protection and invests in the development of green technologies for extractive metallurgy and mining. In this Review, we explore the chemical processes that control the concentration of critical metals in deep-ocean polymetallic nodules, discuss the mining and metallurgical techniques required, and highlight the opportunities and potential risks that are presented by this new industry.

Abstract:Abyssal mineral resource exploitation is receiving increasing attention in many countries. The plume issues caused by deep-sea mining must be studied before commercial mining begins. A possible plume formation mechanism is analysed based on the pipeline lifting mining system, and four types of plumes are classified. In addition, the plume evolution mechanism after formation is discussed, and the potential influence of the background environment on plume diffusion and re-deposition is analysed. Furthermore, the possible effects of initial concentration and discharge conditions on plume diffusion were analysed in conjunction with mining vehicle-sediment interactions. The effect of flocculation on the plume is also discussed. In addition, the effects of turbidity, suspended particle concentration, and plume toxicity on the ecological environment are discussed. Finally, existing problems and future research directions are proposed. This article reviews the plumes generated during the mining process of polymetallic nodules, which are crucial for studying plume formation and evolution mechanisms and optimising the designs of mining equipment towards low-disturbance and plume-control.

Abstract:The main prospects of the urban underground development in China are a greater depth and a wider dimension. Advanced devices and technologies require the development of new materials. From the aspects of excavation mechanical materials, support materials, and environmental protection materials, this study summarizes the status of the main materials in use and the prospects of new materials. Aside from the strength requirement, an environment-friendly feature is the main requirement of new materials. Thus, self-healing, biological, and green support materials are demonstrated as future prospects.
