China independently developed the first marine coincident loop TEM (Transient Electromagnetic Method) device in 2010, and undertook several tests in South China Sea, the Atlantic Ocean and the Indian Ocean. In contrast with the widely applied CSEM (Marine controlled-source electromagnetic) method, whose goal is to explore for hydrocarbons (oil/gas) of higher resistivity than seawater at depths from hundreds of meters to several kilometers below seafloor, the transient electromagnetic method is for low resistivity minerals, and the target depth is from 0 m to 100 m below the seafloor. This device, to our knowledge, is the first central loop transient electromagnetic system for seabed mineral exploration.
