Abstract:The deep oceans harbor a wide variety of mineral resources that are characterized by their abundance and high quality. Nations worldwide are actively pursuing the exploration and extraction of these resources. This paper provides a concise overview of the mineral resources found in the deep sea, highlighting the challenges associated with their exploitation. Furthermore, it presents a comprehensive analysis of the historical development of deep-sea mining technology and equipment, offering valuable insights into this field. By examining the current issues and obstacles faced in deep-sea mineral extraction, this study concludes that the future of deep-sea mining lies in the direction of automation, intelligence, and standardization. Additionally, it identifies the key technological advancements that need to be achieved in order to overcome the challenges associated with deep-sea mining.

Abstract:Four underground resources have been seen as having long-term potential to support sustainable urban development: underground space, groundwater, geomaterials and geothermal energy. Utilization of these resources proposes a new paradigm of economic development: underground urbanism. The new management approach named "Deep City Method" is put forward to aid decision-makers to integrate global potential of the urban underground into city-scale strategic planning. The research output will be presented in form of two papers each with a different focus. Part 1 aims to introduce the concept, process and initial application in Switzerland; Part 2 is devoted to show methodological insight for a new zoning policy in China and investment scenarios for project cost viability.The Part 2 paper will demonstrate a comprehensive evaluation methodology for underground resources beneath the municipality of Suzhou in China, in order to formulate 3D land zoning. Strategic districts in Suzhou city of China are selected for feasibility outlook and, policy instrument proposition. Finally, a new economic index "Underground cost efficiency premium" has been proposed to aid project developers to justify competitiveness of underground development. (C) 2013 Elsevier Ltd. Abstract:Ocean mining activities have been ongoing for nearly 70 years, making great contributions to industrialization. Given the increasing demand for energy, along with the restructuring of the energy supply catalyzed by efforts to achieve a low-carbon economy, deep seabed mining will play an important role in addressing energy- and resource-related problems in the future. However, deep seabed mining remains in the exploratory stage, with many challenges presented by the high-pressure, low-temperature, and complex geologic and hydrodynamic environments in deep-sea mining areas, which are inaccessible to human activities. Thus, considerable efforts are required to ensure sustainable, economic, reliable, and safe deep seabed mining. This study reviews the latest advances in marine engineering geology and the environment related to deep-sea mining activities, presents a bibliometric analysis of the development of ocean mineral resources since the 1950s, summarizes the development, theory, and issues related to techniques for the three stages of ocean mining (i.e., exploration, extraction, and closure), and discusses the engineering geology environment, geological disasters, in-situ monitoring techniques, environmental protection requirements, and environmental effects in detail. Finally, this paper gives some key conclusions and future perspectives to provide insights for subsequent studies and commercial mining operations.

Abstract:The South China Sea (SCS) is the largest marginal sea in the Western Pacific Ocean. Major advances in understanding SCS tectonic processes have been made in the last several decades, especially through the implement-ation of five international ocean drilling expeditions during 1999-2018 and the "South China Sea Deep" major re-search program of the National Natural Science Foundation of China (2011-2019). Critical data have been acquired and important scientific results have been obtained, which have changed our view of how the SCS marginal sea basin developed and evolved. Major progresses have been made in multiple aspects: (1) the SCS is proposed as a new type of "plate-edge rifting" model, which differs from the classic Atlantic-type "intra-plate rifting" model; (2) Ocean drilling obtained the SCS basement basalt samples for the first time, which together with the first deep-towed magnetic survey, enabled the determination of SCS basin ages and revealing that the SCS seafloor spreading propagated stepwise from east to west; (3) Magmatism appeared rapidly during thinning of lithosphere in the SCS northern margin, in sharp contrast to serpentinite exposure by relatively slow rifting of the Atlantic Ocean; (4) Mag-matic activity is still significant after the cessation of SCS seafloor spreading, being controlled by multiple tectonic and mantle processes; (5) Geochemical evidence and geodynamic simulations show that the SCS magmatism is af-fected by the surrounding subduction zones. At present, marine geoscience research of the SCS is being extended to studies of its interaction with surrounding ocean basins. Through conducting large-scale research programs, build-ing ocean drilling platform, and strengthening international collaboration, China’s contributions to marine geoscience research are expected to increase.

Abstract:The deep-sea ground contains a huge amount of energy and mineral resources,for example,oil,gas,and minerals.Various infrastructures such as floating structures,seabed structures,and foundations have been developed to exploit these resources.The seabed structures and foundations can be mainly classified into three types:subsea production structures,offshore pipelines,and anchors.This study reviewed the development,installation,and operation of these infrastructures,including their structures,design,installation,marine environ-ment loads,and applications.On this basis,the research gaps and further research directions were explored through this literature review.First,different floating structures were briefly analyzed and reviewed to introduce the design require-ments of the seabed structures and foundations.Second,the subsea production structures,including subsea manifolds and their foundations,were reviewed and discussed.Third,the basic characteristics and design methods of deep-sea pipelines,including subsea pipelines and risers,were analyzed and reviewed.Finally,the installation and bearing capacity of deep-sea subsea anchors and seabed trench influence on the anchor were reviewed.Through the review,it was found that marine environment conditions are the key inputs for any offshore structure design.The fabrication,installation,and operation of infrastructures should carefully consider the marine loads and geological conditions.Different structures have their own mechanical problems.The fatigue and stability of pipelines mainly depend on the soil-structure interaction.Anchor selection should consider soil types and possible trench formation.These focuses and research gaps can provide a helpful guide on further research,installation,and operation of deep-sea structures and foundations.

Abstract:Traffic congestion and ground space scarcity are increasing the need to find more space in the urban underground. The demand-driven “top-down” planning of Urban Underground Space (UUS) is common worldwide. As natural resource, the endowments of UUS are different in different regions. Consideration of UUS resource endowments, which can be called “bottom-up” thinking, should be integrated into planning. The evaluation method of UUS resource and investigation results in typical cases are being presented in the paper. It is important for urban development to utilize the underground space. Meanwhile, we should also be aware that there are multiple valuable resources in urban underground. Besides space, there are also water, energy and geo-materials. The paper will discuss how to consider these different resources in urban development. There might be conflicts between the developments of different urban underground resources. The paper investigated the interactions between these developments, revealed some serious impacts and typical conflict modes. The identification of conflicts is a basis for the coordination and synergy of these developments. For sustainable development of city, it is needed to understand and scientifically evaluate the multiple urban underground resources, then holistically plan and manage the developments. Structure and properties of urban underground geological body determine the engineering conditions of UUS and resource attributes of urban underground. Since 2003, China has been conducting pilot projects of Urban Geological Investigation (UGI) programs in some large cities. The paper will also show how to consider the influence of geological conditions in urban underground resource evaluation and UUS planning.

Abstract:The review covers the development and the state of the art in deep-sea mining rock mechanics, equipment and challenges. It begins by introducing the significance of deep-sea mining, the types and geographical distribution of deep-sea resources. Section 2 reviews the mechanical properties and fracture mechanism of seabed and related continental rocks, which contributes to the advancement of relevant technologies and theories. Deep-sea mining systems developed by coastal countries are presented in Section 3. Seabed mineral collection system are critically assessed in Section 4. Subsea mining vehicle is reviewed by walking mechanism and controlling system in Section 5. In Section 6, the development of subsea lifting system is detailed by dividing it into hydraulic and pneumatic lifting modes, and some technical problems in the lifting system are described. An in-depth description of surface support systems is presented in Section 7, which includes the deep-sea mining ship, dynamic positioning, heave compensation, launch and retrieval, mineral disposing as well as the storage and transferring systems. Section 8 discusses the challenges in the deep-sea mining, in terms of natural occurrence conditions, international legal framework and cooperative mining, environmental protection and economic benefits, etc. Finally, a brief summary and some aspects of prospective research are presented in Section 9.

Abstract:Abstract As the urbanization in China advances, urban underground spaces are vigorously developed through large-scale projects. However, the development of underground spaces often proceeds without prior scientific planning and design. City planners who fail to consider geo-environmental factors tend to design nonholistic blueprints that may cause serious problems. The development of an underground space is irreversible because underground resources are currently deemed highly valuable. Therefore, scientific planning must be conducted before the construction and launch of underground space projects. This study adopts a new concept of underground space planning and design and analyzes unfavorable geo-environmental factors, such as sand liquefaction and soft soil, which affect the development of underground spaces. The development mode of the underground space suitable for the geological environment in the study area is proposed. Based on the new concept of planning and design, this work considers a case study in Guangdong Province as a reference for the development mode, depth, and function of underground space in the study area. The findings of this study provide some new planning and design ideas for the development and utilization of underground spaces.

Abstract:The editors wish to highlight the articles appearing in this issue. The first article, entitled "New physics of super-sonic ruptures" by Boris G. Tarasov, concerns the development of a new theory on the potential occurrence of ruptures after deep underground earthquakes. Two other articles belong to our first special theme of"Disaster evolution in deep underground." The final two articles introduce a nonlocal damage fracture phase-field model for rock-like materials and the gas-liquid displacement in microcleats for mass transfer through gas- or water-driven displacement. These five papers indeed explore various aspects of deep underground science and engineering and constitute an integral component of deep underground fundamentals.

Abstract:Deep-sea environment, characterized by high pressures, extremely high/low temperatures, limited photosynthesis-generated organic matter, darkness, and high levels of corrosion, is home to flourishing special ecosystems in the world. Here, we illustrate how the deep-sea equipment offers insights into the study of life in the deep sea based on the work in the past five decades. We first describe how organisms in the deep sea are studied, even though it is highly difficult to get access to such extreme environments. We then explain the role of deep-sea technologies in advancing research on the evolution of organisms in hydrothermal vents, cold seeps, seamounts, oceanic trenches, and whale falls from the following perspectives: biological diversity, mechanisms of environmental adaptation, biological evolution, and ecosystem connectivity. Finally, to better understand the function and service of deep-sea organisms, and further conserve the special creatures under anthropologic activity and climate change, we highlight the importance of innovative deep-sea technologies to promote cutting-edge research on deep-sea organisms, and note the remaining challenges and developing directions for deep-sea equipment.

Abstract:Underground urbanization aids sustainability by contributing to the optimization of land use plans, diversification of urban functions, safeguarding of utility supplies and enrichment of social life. Underground space as a valuable land resource can be integrated into a general urban resources management scheme and development policy, by rationalizing resource supply according to economic demand, and by coordinating stakeholders from the public administration, private developers and users. After benchmarking best practices in administration and management, from seven cities (Helsinki, Singapore, Hong Kong, Minneapolis, Tokyo, Shanghai and Montreal), critical success factors are extracted to guide a pilot project implementation.The way to incorporate underground space planning into conventional urban planning process is exemplified by a pilot project of Suzhou City in China, which investigated thoroughly the supply potential of its underground space resource as well as the demand potential of the urban economy on underground space development. The core value of the case study in Suzhou City is based on active involvement of provincial and municipal governments, who supported territorial data collection, administrative consultation and the development of GIS-based decision-making tools. The typicality of the present case study refers to an old Chinese city with a modern Central Business District owning important economic functions for the Yangtze region. Underground Space in Suzhou City is considered as a new land resource manageable with a quantitative and spatial inventory for future allocation. An economic model putting forward a "3D land value" index will be illustrated for underground building projects. This index helps to regulate underground space development according to the resource supply potential and economic demand potential.This strategic framework including potential analysis, local implementation and instrumental innovation was developed from an international cooperation program named "Deep City project" between Switzerland and China. Further discussions on considering societal impacts affected by underground space use indicate future research directions for underground space operations management. (C) 2015 Elsevier Ltd. Abstract:Long-term and continuous large-scale exploitation has increasingly exhausted shallow metal mineral resources, and deep mining has become inevitable. The current global status of deep mining of metal mineral resources was presented, a series of engineering challenges faced by deep mining were systematically analyzed, and some progress and future innovation focus in key engineering technologies, such as the prediction and prevention of rockburst, cooling techniques, rock support techniques, deep hoisting techniques, and several nontraditional deep mining techniques, were highlighted. Meanwhile, new insights into development strategies of deep mining technology were proposed. The integration of these forward-looking key innovative technologies will form the overall framework of an innovative technology system for the deep mining of metal minerals. This technology system will help to achieve safe, efficient, and green exploitation of deep underground metal mineral resources and ensure the sustainable development of the metal mining industry.

Abstract:Nowadays, there is a strong demand for underground space development in China. Meanwhile, underground space utilization has shown the characteristics of high construction difficulty, long construction period, high cost, and complex social impacts. A systematic and reliable management system for underground space development has not yet been established. Therefore, it is urgent to carry out strategic study on the comprehensive management of underground space development from both theoretical and practical aspects. By analyzing the current situation of underground space development in China, the problems in the comprehensive management of underground space are discussed from the aspects of laws and regulations, high-level design, management system, geological survey, equipment, information resource, intelligent level, and comprehensive benefit. Furthermore, the development strategy and countermeasures for underground space development in China are proposed. Considering long-term strategic objectives and development principles, the future main tasks include the establishment of a comprehensive management system, improvement in management capacity, intelligentization of space management, and reinforcement of emergency response safety management. Specifically, a national unified coordination system needs to be established for underground space comprehensive management; relevant laws and regulations, standards, and regulatory evaluation systems should be improved; technologies and professionals should be encouraged for key equipment development; and urban underground space survey and information management should be promoted.
