Abstract:Underwater acoustic sensors are vital for monitoring marine environments and detecting targets, but their optimal placement presents challenges, particularly in deep-sea environments. This paper addresses the question of determining the optimal sensor placement in a specific ocean region through a principled optimization approach. While previous studies mainly utilized heuristic algorithms without exploiting problem-specific structures, this work explores leveraging the complex three-dimensional acoustic environment through principled modeling and tailored optimization. Specifically, intricate three-dimensional multi-directional acoustic maps are constructed for each sensor. Based on these maps, the sensor placement problem is then cast as an integer linear programming, allowing the study to leverage established theoretical results from operations research. Additionally, an alternative algorithm with its performance indicator is presented to find near-optimal solutions efficiently and can empirically reach over 99% coverage of the optimal solution. Experimental results using real-life data from the South China Sea demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed approach in achieving much larger detection coverage compared to random and empirical strategies. Notably, the alternative fast algorithm approaches the optimal solution in significantly less time. Furthermore, experiments show that any further simplification of this approach leads to the performance degradation.

Abstract:Deep-sea environment, characterized by high pressures, extremely high/low temperatures, limited photosynthesis-generated organic matter, darkness, and high levels of corrosion, is home to flourishing special ecosystems in the world. Here, we illustrate how the deep-sea equipment offers insights into the study of life in the deep sea based on the work in the past five decades. We first describe how organisms in the deep sea are studied, even though it is highly difficult to get access to such extreme environments. We then explain the role of deep-sea technologies in advancing research on the evolution of organisms in hydrothermal vents, cold seeps, seamounts, oceanic trenches, and whale falls from the following perspectives: biological diversity, mechanisms of environmental adaptation, biological evolution, and ecosystem connectivity. Finally, to better understand the function and service of deep-sea organisms, and further conserve the special creatures under anthropologic activity and climate change, we highlight the importance of innovative deep-sea technologies to promote cutting-edge research on deep-sea organisms, and note the remaining challenges and developing directions for deep-sea equipment.

For these reasons, there is significant interest in monitoring aquatic environments for scientific, environmental, commercial, safety, and military purposes. WUWNet is the premier venue for research and development bringing real-time, in-situ sensing and actuation to this aquatic world. The goal of this conference is to bring together researchers and practitioners in areas relevant to underwater networks and systems.

Abstract:The deep-sea environment creates the largest ecosystem in the world with the largest biological community and extensive undiscovered biodiversity. Nevertheless, these ecosystems are far from well known. Deep-sea equipment is an indispensable approach to research life in extreme environments in the deep-sea environment because of the difficulty in obtaining access to these unique habitats. This work reviewed the historical development and the state-of-the-art of deep-sea equipment suitable for researching extreme ecosystems, to clarify the role of this equipment as a promoter for the progress of life in extreme environmental studies. Linkages of the developed deep-sea equipment and the discovered species are analyzed in this study. In addition, Equipment associated with researching the deep-sea ecosystems of hydrothermal vents, cold seeps, whale falls, seamounts, and oceanic trenches are introduced and analyzed in detail. To clarify the thrust and key points of the future promotion of life in extreme environmental studies, prospects and challenges related to observing equipment, samplers, laboratory simulation systems, and submersibles are proposed. Furthermore, a blueprint for the integration of <i>in situ</i> observations, sampling, controllable culture, manned experiments in underwater environments, and laboratory simulations is depicted for future studies.

Abstract:Marine information gathering, transmission, processing, and fusion play an important role in many areas, such as marine science research, environmental expedition, resource exploitation, and security and defense. Owing to its specific application environment, it has also become a popular information science research area. Like other branches of information science, the development of marine information technology over the last thirty years has benefited significantly from advances and achievements in general information theory. However, the manner in which it highlights the close bonding among propagation physics, signal processing, and the marine environment is seldom seen in other areas. This paper first gives a comprehensive overview of the current status of the theory and methods used in surface target acquisition, underwater target recognition, underwater communications and sea-air integrated information transmission, oceanic remote sensing, and data processing and information fusion. Subsequently, with the aim of helping to advance fundamental research on marine information important scientific problems to be addressed are presented.

Abstract:Recent research in the deep-sea has identified rich ore deposits that may be economically extractable through the development of a deep-sea mining (DSM) industry.The poly-metallic nodule has the potential to become a significant mineral resource.The development of deep sea mining is limited by the execrable,dynamic and complex environment.The aiming mining tenements are located deep seabed with operations taking place in an environment with extreme conditions with many uncertainties about potential environmental impacts.So modeling and simulation of deep sea mining system has become a promising approach to develop,analyze and illustrate the mining procedure.The concept and prototype for environmental impact modeling and simulation of a test mining system were proposed by the COMRA (China Ocean Mineral Resources R D Association) integrated with the investigated data of the working area.The purpose of the project is to provide reasonable modeling and simulation system as a case study to recognize and illustrate the primary deep sea environmental issues surrounding DSM.In the prototype system six HLA Federations were developed and executed standing for poly-metallic nodule pilot mining procedure.Along with the HLA simulation procedure of mining,the impact of deep sea environment was run through message exchange,time management,federal control and visualization based on RTI.The environmental federal is constructed under the model of deep sea environment.

Abstract:Ocean mining activities have been ongoing for nearly 70 years, making great contributions to industrialization. Given the increasing demand for energy, along with the restructuring of the energy supply catalyzed by efforts to achieve a low-carbon economy, deep seabed mining will play an important role in addressing energy- and resource-related problems in the future. However, deep seabed mining remains in the exploratory stage, with many challenges presented by the high-pressure, low-temperature, and complex geologic and hydrodynamic environments in deep-sea mining areas, which are inaccessible to human activities. Thus, considerable efforts are required to ensure sustainable, economic, reliable, and safe deep seabed mining. This study reviews the latest advances in marine engineering geology and the environment related to deep-sea mining activities, presents a bibliometric analysis of the development of ocean mineral resources since the 1950s, summarizes the development, theory, and issues related to techniques for the three stages of ocean mining (i.e., exploration, extraction, and closure), and discusses the engineering geology environment, geological disasters, in-situ monitoring techniques, environmental protection requirements, and environmental effects in detail. Finally, this paper gives some key conclusions and future perspectives to provide insights for subsequent studies and commercial mining operations.

Abstract:The South China Sea (SCS) is the largest marginal sea in the Western Pacific Ocean. Major advances in understanding SCS tectonic processes have been made in the last several decades, especially through the implement-ation of five international ocean drilling expeditions during 1999-2018 and the "South China Sea Deep" major re-search program of the National Natural Science Foundation of China (2011-2019). Critical data have been acquired and important scientific results have been obtained, which have changed our view of how the SCS marginal sea basin developed and evolved. Major progresses have been made in multiple aspects: (1) the SCS is proposed as a new type of "plate-edge rifting" model, which differs from the classic Atlantic-type "intra-plate rifting" model; (2) Ocean drilling obtained the SCS basement basalt samples for the first time, which together with the first deep-towed magnetic survey, enabled the determination of SCS basin ages and revealing that the SCS seafloor spreading propagated stepwise from east to west; (3) Magmatism appeared rapidly during thinning of lithosphere in the SCS northern margin, in sharp contrast to serpentinite exposure by relatively slow rifting of the Atlantic Ocean; (4) Mag-matic activity is still significant after the cessation of SCS seafloor spreading, being controlled by multiple tectonic and mantle processes; (5) Geochemical evidence and geodynamic simulations show that the SCS magmatism is af-fected by the surrounding subduction zones. At present, marine geoscience research of the SCS is being extended to studies of its interaction with surrounding ocean basins. Through conducting large-scale research programs, build-ing ocean drilling platform, and strengthening international collaboration, China’s contributions to marine geoscience research are expected to increase.

Abstract:There are abundant mineral resources at the seafloor. These resources have rich varieties, vast reserves, high grade, and great development and utilization prospects. Countries in the world are accelerating the development of deep-sea mining equipment nowadays. This study analyzes the development status of the deep-sea mining equipment in China and abroad and investigates the deficiencies in technologies and equipment in China from the perspectives of fundamental scientific research, key technology development, and sea trial verification. Moreover, it summarizes the key scientific and technological issues to be resolved, and proposes the developing trends of deep-sea heavy operation equipment, ore transport equipment, and sea surface support vessels. We propose that deep-sea mining should adhere to the concepts of heavy equipment, collaboration, intelligence, and green development, and key technology innovation and independent research and development of the mining equipment should be promoted. Demonstration projects should be constructed for deep-sea polymetallic nodule mining to accelerate the development of deep-sea mining technologies and equipment, so as to realize large-scale sea trials, conduct system design for long-term operation, and promote commercial seabed mining.

Abstract:To solve the global shortage of land and offshore resources, the development of deep-sea resources has become a popular topic in recent decades. Deep-sea composites are widely used materials in abyssal resources extraction, and corresponding marine exploration vehicles and monitoring devices for deep-sea engineering. This article firstly reviews the existing research results and limitations of marine composites and equipment or devices used for resource extraction. By combining the research progress of smart composites, deep-sea smart composite materials with the three characteristics of self-diagnosis, self-healing, and self-powered are proposed and relevant studies are summarized. Finally, the review summarizes research challenges for the materials, and looks forward to the development of new composites and their practical application in conjunction with the progress of composites disciplines and AI techniques.

To overcome this, we propose the Deep-time Platform—a one-stop online research platform for geoscientists. Utilizing cloud computing and advanced tech, it offers open access to deep-time geoscientific data, knowledge, models, and computing power. The Deep-time Engine ensures seamless coordination. The Platform is aimed at enabling and empowering global geoscientists’ collaborative innovation and discoveries. The Deep-time Platform is a significant advancement in geoscientific exploration, fostering global collaboration and promoting a data-driven research paradigm within the framework of open science.

Abstract:South China Sea is the largest sea of China with over 70 percent of it being deep-sea area, which is rich in deep-sea resources, particularly oil, gas, and mineral resources. Besides, high temperature, high humidity, and high salinity are the major features that distinguish South China Sea from other sea areas. Therefore, it is of strategic significance to study marine equipment suitable for resource exploitation in South China Sea. This study first reviews the development status and trend of major marine resource exploitation equipment both in China and abroad, examines the development demand for and key technologies of resource exploitation equipment for South China Sea, and proposes the development goals and ideas for the equipment. Furthermore, several suggestions are proposed from the perspective of equipment and industry development. Specifically, a key technology research and development (R&D) center and an emergency rescue center for deep-sea oil and gas development, a R&D center for deep-sea mineral resource exploitation equipment, a deep-sea aquaculture demonstration and experimental area, and a national deep-sea comprehensive test site in the South China Sea are proposed to be built relying on Hainan Province, thus to gradually establish a national deep-sea science and technology innovation center, a national deep-sea engineering equipment support base, and a national deep-sea science and technology industry center.

Abstract:The discovery of the marine “deep biosphere”—microorganisms living deep below the seafloor—is one of the most significant and exciting discoveries since the ocean drilling program began more than 40 years ago. Study of the deep biosphere has become a research frontier and a hot spot both for geological and biological sciences. Here, we introduce the history of the discovery of the deep biosphere, and then we describe the types of environments for life below the seafloor, the energy sources for the living creatures, the diversity of organisms within the deep biosphere, and the new tools and technologies used in this research field. We will highlight several recently completed Integrated Ocean Drilling Program Expeditions, which targeted the subseafloor deep biosphere within the crust and sediments. Finally, future research directions and challenges of deep biosphere investigation towards uncovering the roles of subsurface microorganisms will be briefly addressed.
Seabed Structures and Foundations Related to Deep-Sea Resource Development:A Review Based on Design and Research

Abstract:The deep-sea ground contains a huge amount of energy and mineral resources,for example,oil,gas,and minerals.Various infrastructures such as floating structures,seabed structures,and foundations have been developed to exploit these resources.The seabed structures and foundations can be mainly classified into three types:subsea production structures,offshore pipelines,and anchors.This study reviewed the development,installation,and operation of these infrastructures,including their structures,design,installation,marine environ-ment loads,and applications.On this basis,the research gaps and further research directions were explored through this literature review.First,different floating structures were briefly analyzed and reviewed to introduce the design require-ments of the seabed structures and foundations.Second,the subsea production structures,including subsea manifolds and their foundations,were reviewed and discussed.Third,the basic characteristics and design methods of deep-sea pipelines,including subsea pipelines and risers,were analyzed and reviewed.Finally,the installation and bearing capacity of deep-sea subsea anchors and seabed trench influence on the anchor were reviewed.Through the review,it was found that marine environment conditions are the key inputs for any offshore structure design.The fabrication,installation,and operation of infrastructures should carefully consider the marine loads and geological conditions.Different structures have their own mechanical problems.The fatigue and stability of pipelines mainly depend on the soil-structure interaction.Anchor selection should consider soil types and possible trench formation.These focuses and research gaps can provide a helpful guide on further research,installation,and operation of deep-sea structures and foundations.

Abstract:Investigations on the hydrodynamics in the development of engineering equipment for deep ocean exploitation will not only deepen the knowledge of the interaction rule between the deep ocean environments and floating ocean structures, but also further develop the technological means for the deep ocean resource exploitation, which may effectively shorten the distance with other advanced countries in the area of deep ocean exploitation technology, and directly provide technical guidance and service for the regulation and design of key engineering projects in deep ocean. Based on our investigation work related to the hydrodynamics for deep ocean engineering equipment design and the understanding of the recent development trends in that field, the present paper gives a brief discussion on the future development trends of hydrodynamics, mainly water wave dynamics, in deep ocean engineering equipment design.

Abstract:The review covers the development and the state of the art in deep-sea mining rock mechanics, equipment and challenges. It begins by introducing the significance of deep-sea mining, the types and geographical distribution of deep-sea resources. Section 2 reviews the mechanical properties and fracture mechanism of seabed and related continental rocks, which contributes to the advancement of relevant technologies and theories. Deep-sea mining systems developed by coastal countries are presented in Section 3. Seabed mineral collection system are critically assessed in Section 4. Subsea mining vehicle is reviewed by walking mechanism and controlling system in Section 5. In Section 6, the development of subsea lifting system is detailed by dividing it into hydraulic and pneumatic lifting modes, and some technical problems in the lifting system are described. An in-depth description of surface support systems is presented in Section 7, which includes the deep-sea mining ship, dynamic positioning, heave compensation, launch and retrieval, mineral disposing as well as the storage and transferring systems. Section 8 discusses the challenges in the deep-sea mining, in terms of natural occurrence conditions, international legal framework and cooperative mining, environmental protection and economic benefits, etc. Finally, a brief summary and some aspects of prospective research are presented in Section 9.
