Abstract:By multi-arc ion plating,(Ti,Cr) N was deposited on the rivet punch.In this paper,the failure mode of rivet punch,the morphology,microstructure,micro hardness and wear resistance of the film were analyzed and discussed.The experimental results show that the service life of rivet punch with the film is increased by more than two times compared to that without.

Abstract:Multi-component（TiCr）N films were prepared by a combined ion plating-chromizing process．The results show that multi-component （TiCr）N films can be deposited on high speed steel by a combined ion plating of TiN and high temperature chromizing process．The films consist of （TiCr）N，β-（CrTi）２N and Ti，which have a higher microhardness than that of TiN films．There is a chromium-rich media area between film and substrate，which consist of α-Fe，Cr７C３ and M６C and can improve adhesion．
Structure and Wear Resistance of the Multi-Arc Ion Plated Coating on TC11 Alloy

Abstract:The TiN/CrN coating was plated by multi-arc ion plating on surface of TC11 alloy work pieces.The surface appearance,microstructure and performance of TiN-CrN coating were investigated through metallographic microscope,SEM,XRD and micro-hardness tester.The results show that some compact and tightly united TiN/CrN films are obtained on the surface of TC11 alloy work pieces,and their hardness is above 1800HV0.025.The surface microstructure and the wear-resistance of TC11 alloy can be greatly improved with these films.

Abstract:An adherent nano-superhard titanium nitride (TiN) film on the substrate of Cr12Mo4V high speed steel was prefabricated in a vacuum cathode multi-arc ion-plating system. Microhardness, film-to-substrate adhesion, and microstructure of the film were investigated typically using Vickers hardometer, scratch tester, and X-ray diffractometer. Results show that: (i) the achievable film microhardness is in the range of 35-45 GPa; (ii) the critical load (Lc) of the superhard TiN film is approximately 64N; (iii) the nm scale mean main grain sizes of the film are approximately of 12.7 nm for TiN111, 19.7 nm for TiN200, and 9.6 nm for TiN220; and (iv) compared with the standard TiN film with the hardness of 22GPa, the accomplishment of the nano-superhard TiN film may be due to (a) the ion bombardment induced residual stress within the film, and (b) the combined effect of the decrease of crystalline size and preferred orientation in the plane (111).

Abstract:TiAlCrN and TiAlCrN/CrN composite coatings were prepared on the substrate of high speed steel(M2).The substrates were initially plasma nitrided(PN) to create a diffusion layer, and the arc ion plating was applied to deposit TiAlCrN and TiAlCrN/CrN multilayers.The microstructure of the deposited coatings was characterized by electron probe microanalysis(EPMA), scanning electron microscopy(SEM) and X-ray diffractometry(XRD).The results show that TiAlCrN and TiAlCrN/CrN coatings exhibit weak(111) and(200) orientations, respectively, though both of them have a crystal structure of FCC.The composition and microstructure of TiAlCrN coating are homogeneous and uniform.Compared with TiAlCrN coating, TiAlCrN/CrN multilayers tested by nanoindentation and microscratch with a periodic structure consisting of alternating TiAlCrN layer with thick of 400 nm and CrN layer with thick of 200 nm exhibit higher hardness of about 3 450 HV and higher adhesion strength of more than 100 N.
Microstructure Analysis on the Surface Modified Layer of Martensite Heat Resistant Steel by Multi-arc Ion Plating

Abstract:In this paper,th e TiN-CrN coating was plated by multi-arc ion plating on martensite heat resistan t steel 1Cr11Ni2W2MoV work pieces.The su rface appearance and the microstructure of the layers were observed under metall ographic microscope and SEM,the phases i n the films were determined by using XRD ,and the hardness of the layers was meas ured by a micro-hardness tester.The resu lts showed that the compact and tightly united TiN-CrN films were gained on the surface of 1Cr11Ni2W2MoV steel work piec es.Their micro-hardness reach 1100～1400 HV0 025.Th ese films greatly improved the surface m icrostructure and the wear-resistance of 1Cr11Ni2W2MoV steel.
Structure, Mechanical and Tribological Properties of Self-Toughening TiSiN/Ag Multilayer Coatings on Ti6Al4V Prepared by Arc Ion Plating

Abstract:The TiSiN/Ag multilayer coatings deposited on Ti6A14V alloy substrate using the multi -arc ion plating system. All multilayer coatings had a same total thickness of about 2.5 mu m, and the TiSiN layer had a fixed thickness and the Ag layer had different thicknesses. Evidence concluded from X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microcopies, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy revealed that nanocrystallites and amorphous microstructure of nc-TiN and amorphous Si-3 N-4 for individual TiSiN layers, where amorphous Si3N4 around nanocrystallites TiN boundaries, and ductile nanocrystallites silver clusters and metallic silver for individual Ag layers which can limit continuous growth of single (200) preferential orientation coarse columnar TiN crystal. In addition, the TiN grain size presented a decreasing trend with the decrease of the thickness of Ag layers. The TiSiN/Ag multilayer coatings showed a significantly improved toughness compared with the TiSiN coating. The individual Ag layers of nano-multilayer coatings, not only as a self-lubricating but also as a barrier which inhibited micro cracks propagation, the formation of threading defects throughout all coatings, cause energy dissipation by passing through the interface zones without making the coating fail and at the same time prevented the aggressive seawater through the micro-pores. Moreover, improved toughness, excellent wear resistance together with high hardness, H/E and H-3/E-*2 values were found for the TiSiN/Ag multilayer coating with the individual Ag layers of 22.22 nm. Study on Nitriding and Multi-Arc Ion Plating on M2 and H13 Steel

Abstract:The TiAlCrN composite films on M2 and H13 steel substrate were prepared by nitriding and multi-arc ion plating.The composition and microstructure of the films were analyzed by means of electron probe microanalysis(EPMA),X-ray diffraction(XRD) and scanning electron microscopy(SEM).The results show that both the films on M2 and H13 steels consist of TiAlCr,CrN and TiAlN layers from inner to outer with a total thickness of 4μm. The similar component and microstructure of TiAlCrN films on different substrate are observed.Both the TiAlCrN films on M2 and H13 steel exhibit high hardness and adhesion strength examined by nanoindentation and micorscratch tests,while the TiAlCrN/M2 films have higher Vickers hardness(HV),adhesion strength and toughness than TiAlCrN/H13 films.

Abstract:In this study, the efficacy of Cr/CrxN multilayer films, fabricated on 8Cr4Mo4V bearing steel substrates via Plasma-Based Ion Implantation and Deposition (PBIID) technique, was thoroughly examined. Utilizing a multifunctional coating apparatus, the surface engineering process was optimized for efficiency and precision, yielding controllable periodic Cr/CrxN films. Characterizations conducted with XPS, XRD, and TEM disclosed a 'stacked' stratified film structure that resonates with the process periodicity, characterized by a 17 nm cycle and consisting of dispersed nanocrystalline (Cr, CrN, and Cr2N). These multilayer structures markedly enhanced the corrosion resistance of the material, with the treated 8Cr4Mo4V specimens demonstrating a corrosion current density of 2.47×10-7 A·cm-2, which is an order of magnitude reduction compared to the original sample of 7.60×10-6 A·cm-2. A series equivalent circuit model was developed to simulate the corrosion dynamics. The nitridation effect induced by ion implantation was instrumental in attaining a surface nanohardness of 19 GPa, approximately doubling the original hardness, while also achieving a coating-substrate adhesion force of 105 mN due to the peening effect. This method can be applied to improve the corrosion resistance life of precision parts, especially complex parts.

Abstract:TiCrN coatings were deposited onto high-speed steel substrates by arc ion plating. The crystalline structure of the coatings was analysed by X-ray diffraction. Influence of both negative bias applied to the substrates and nitrogen flowrate on the crystalline structure was investigated. Scanning electron microscopy was employed to observe the surface quality of the coatings. Hardness of the coatings was measured by the XP nanoindenter. It is indicated that both size and quantity of the macroparticles decrease with increasing negative bias. TiCrN coatings with enhanced hardness can be obtained when a larger negative bias is applied. Increasing nitrogen flowrate benefits hardness of the coatings as well. Compared with the TiN thin film, the TiCrN coatings exhibit better mechanical behaviour due to the solid solution strengthening effects caused by the doped Cr atoms. Influence of deposition parameters on the structure and mechanical properties has been discussed.

Abstract:A composite TiSiN/Ag/TiSiN multilayer coating was deposited on a Ti6Al4V substrate by multi-arc ion plating system. The coating had a special structure with a TiN buffer layer, TiSiN/Ag multilayers that possess alternating TiSiN (45 nm) and Ag (12 nm) layers, and TiSiN coating interlayers of 120 nm thickness for a total thickness of 1.7 mu m. The TiSiN layers had a nanocrystalline/amorphous microstructure of nc-TiN, nc-Ag and amorphous Si3N4, with amorphous Si3N4 present around nanocrystal TiN and Ag boundaries, and Ag layers consisting of ductile nanocrystal silver. We have shown that this design of the composite TiSiN/Ag/TiSiN multilayer coating can effectively hinder crack propagation and increase fracture resistance of the coating.

Abstract:The (TiCr)N + TiN(A-coating) and CrN + (TiCr)N (B-coating) composite coatings with different stoichiometrics were deposited on plasma-nitrided(PN) high speed steel substrates by arc ion plating. The chemical contents of the coating were controlled by adjusting the chemical contents of the target materials. The microstructures and mechanical properties of the two types of composite coatings were characterized with X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), electron probe micro-analysis(EPMA), nano indentation and microscratch test. The results show that the interfacial adhesion is very strong, and that the coatings have fairly smooth surface with finer grains, possibly because Cr atom replaces Ti of the TiN and because of ion bombardment of liquid drops on the substrate surface. Moreover, we found that B-coating has lower Young's Modulus (EIT), but higher Vickers Hardness, stronger interfacial adhesion and toughness than those of A-coating.
Nanocrystallite Superhard Titanium Nitride Film In Multi-Arc Ion Plating

Abstract:Titanium nitride (TiN) films synthesized by multi-arc ion plating (AIP) normally have a columnar microstructure, and are likely to induce surface defects due to the formation of macroparticles and neutral particles in the vicinity of cathode arc sources. Hence, the achievable microhardness of the normal AIP TiN films only ranges between 20 similar to 30 GPa. A systematic study for fabricating an adherent nano-superhard titanium nitride (TiN) film on M2 high speed steel substrate by a vacuum cathode multi-arc ion-plating (ALP) system was initiated. To understand the relationship of the film processing-structure-property, their microhardness, film-to-substrate adhesion, frictional property, and microstructure of the film were investigated using Vickers hardometer, scratch tester, ball-on-disc tester, X-ray diffractometer, and transmission electron microscope. Results show that: (i) the achievable film microhardness ranges between 35 GPa and 45 GPa; (ii) the critical load (Lc) of the superhard TiN film is at 64 N approximately; (iii) the friction coefficient, under a high-load and a high rotating-speed, of the film is ranging from 0.5 to 0.8; and (iv) the nm scale mean main grain-sizes of the film are approximately 12.7 nm for TiN111, 19.7 nm for TiN200 and 9.6 nm for TiN220. The maximum achievable microhardness 45 GPa is more than twice of the 22 GPa for standard TiN film. Such hardness enhancement is anticipated as mainly due to: (a) the formation of nanoscaled crystalline grains; (b) the preferential orientation and growth of grains in the close-packed plane (111); and (c) the induced residual stress within the film by ion bombardment.
Evaluation of wear resistance of CrN, CrAlN, and TiAlN coatings deposited by multi-arc ion plating on spinning die of Cr12MoV

Abstract:This study successfully deposited CrN, CrAlN, and TiAlN coatings on the surface of Cr12MoV substrate using multi-arc ion plating (MAIP). The influence of phase composition and surface morphology on the hardness, adhesion strength, friction performance, and wear mechanisms of these coatings was investigated, with a comparative analysis of their wear resistance. Nanoindentation results revealed that the hardness (H) of CrN, CrAlN, and TiAlN coatings increased by 70.37 %, 74.97 %, and 75.64 %, respectively, compared to the substrate. The hardness (H) and elastic modulus (E) were found to be positively correlated. CrAlN demonstrated superior resistance to deformation, reflected in its higher H/E and H3/E2 radios compared to the CrN and TiAlN. Adhesion tests showed that CrAlN had the strongest adhesion strength to the substrate, with an adhesion force of 81.55 N, representing a 14.78% and 8.46% improvement over CrN and TiAlN, respectively. Friction and wear tests identified CrAlN as having the lowest friction coefficient (0.389), attributed to its high hardness and strong adhesion. The wear mechanisms of CrAlN observed were primarily mild abrasive wear, oxidative wear, and adhesive wear. In comparison, CrN and TiAlN coatings exhibited higher friction coefficients of 0.424 and 0.391, respectively, due to their lower hardness and adhesion, which led to more severe oxidative and abrasive wear. Additionally, the TiAlN coating showed signs of brittle failure in wear scars, likely due to the formation of Al2O3 oxides during wear.

Abstract:The multi-arc ion plating technology is used to prepare CrN coating on the valve seat material surface. Results show that the surface grains gradually increase in size and becomes less uniform with the increase of the Cr target current. At different Cr target currents, the main phases of the CrN coating are Cr, CrN, and Cr2N. The critical load of the coating and matrix is 49.2 N. When the Cr target current is 65 A, the nano-hardness is maximum (18.84 GPa), and Young 's modulus is 255.41 GPa. The CrN coating can reduce the friction coefficient of the valve seat material from 0.62 to 0.48, thereby improving the wear-resistance behavior. The main wear mechanism is abrasive wear.

Abstract:High entropy ceramics (HECs) films (TiCrZrVAl)N were deposited on Inconel 718 alloys by multi-arc ion plating (MAIP) equipment at different nitrogen flow ratios RnN2/(N2+ Ar). The effects of Rn (0%, 20%, 50%, 80%, 90%) on the evolution of microstructure, mechanical properties, and tribological properties of films were systematically studied. The films deposited at low Rn exhibited an amorphous structure and smooth cross-section, whereas the films at Rn of 50% and higher showed a face-centered-cubic (FCC) NaCl-type structure with loose columnar cross-section. With the increase of Rn, the content of the N element increased, the Cr element decreased, and other elements (Ti, Zr, V, Al) nearly remained stable. The films' hardness and elastic modulus increased gradually and reached the maximum value of 31.08 ± 1.81 GPa and 387.66 ± 12.49 GPa, respectively, when Rn was 80%. The films deposited at Rn of 20% invalided easily in tribology tests, whereas the films prepared under Rn exceeded 20% presented outstanding wear resistance and obtained the minimum wear rate of 7.4×10-16 m3/(N·m) when Rn is 80%.

Abstract:TiN films grown on Ti as interlayers were prepared on AZ91C magnesium alloy substrate by cathodic multi arc ion plating.The surface morphology,microstructure and hardness of the films were examined using high-resolution scanning electron microscope(SEM),X-ray energy diffraction spectrometers(EDS) and microcharacter hardness tester.The results show that TiN films with good performance can be obtained on the properly pretreated magnesium substrate by the multi arc ion plating technique.The adhesion force between the film and substrate was over 130 mN,and the complex hardness of the films was about 500 HV whereas that of AZ91C magnesium alloy was about 125 HV.The neutral salt spray accelerated testing indicated that corrosion rate of magnesium alloy after treated by this method declined significantly under ASTM-117 standard test condition.The surface of the films was not corroded obviously after salt spray test for 200 h.Vacuum multi arc ion plating technique can be applied to the area of magnesium alloy surface protection.

Abstract:The objective of this work was to evaluate the microstructure, mechanical properties, tribological performance, and corrosion behavior of TiAlN coatings prepared by the ultrasonic shot peening (USSP) pre-treatment of cemented carbide substrate and multi-arc ion plating (MAIP). The TiAlN coatings modified by USSP+MAIP combined surface treatment exhibited the preferred (111) crystal orientation of TiN. The intensity of the TiAlN diffraction peak was lower than that of the TiAlN coating without the USSP pre-treatment. At the same time, the interface of the TiAlN coating after the combined USSP+MAIP surface modification became thicker, the film thickness increased, and the grain size was refined. Compared with the TiAlN coating without the USSP pre-treatment, microhardness and coating-substrate bonding force were significantly improved, having maximal values of 2554 HV0.05 and 38.58 N, respectively. Compared with the un-USSP TiAlN coating, the TiAlN coating modified by the combined USSP+MAIP surface treatment exhibited an abrasive wear mechanism and adhesive wear mechanism, revealing better tribological properties. The electrochemical results showed that the TiAlN coating modified by the combined surface treatment had a higher open-circuit potential, lower corrosion current density, and higher polarization resistance. Due to the increased film thickness and the higher structure density, the modified TiAlN coating exhibited better protection efficiency and higher charge transfer resistance.

Abstract:ZrTiN hard coatings were deposited on WC/TiC/Co cemented carbide substrate by multi arc ion plating. During the depositing, the four most important parameters are target current, nitrogen flowrate, deposition temperature and negative substrate bias voltage. This paper presented a detailed analysis of the effect of these four depositing parameters on the microstructures and properties of ZrTiN thin films respectively. In addition, we also systematically investigated the microstructure, elemental composition, crystal orientation, lattice parameter, grain size, adhesive strength and microhardness of the films. X-ray diffraction analysis indicated that only the face centred cubic phase was formed in the films, but the crystal orientation varied with different deposition conditions. Microhardness and adhesive strength of the coatings were associated with elemental composition, crystal orientation and microstructures. The optimum films obtained possessed comprehensive mechanical properties with an adhesive strength of 84·1 N and a microhardness of 30·4 GPa and exhibited the strongest (111) preferred orientation.

Abstract:Multi-arc ion plating of TiN was conducted to improve the surface properties of high-speed steel W9Mo3Cr4V, commonly used to make spinning and weaving scissors. The TiN thin film was characterized by X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy. The wear resistance of W9Mo3Cr4V steel before and after TiN ion plating was examined with a abrasion tester with 500 kg load for 1 min. The polarization curves for W9Mo3Cr4V steels with and without TiN thin film were measured in 3%NaCl solution. The results showed that TiN ion plating improves the resistance of W9Mo3Cr4V steel to wear and corrosion greatly.

Abstract:In order to overcome the shortcomings of the traditional TiN coating system,a new unbalanced magnetron sputtering technique was used to prepare a series of CrN films.The surface analysis techniques,such as AFM and SEM,were used to analyze the morphology of CrN films with different thickness.The thickness and microhardness of the films and the adhesive strength between the film and substrate were measured,also the tribological characteristics of the films was researched.The results show that a chromium transitional layer can enhance the adhesive strength between the film and substrate and optimize the film′s performances.The CrN films prepared with unbalanced magnetron sputtering technique exhibit high microhardness,low frictional coefficient and good wear resistance.Moreover,some affecting factors on tribological characteristics of CrN films,such as coating thickness,etc,were investigated as well.
