Abstract:Baffles play an important role in suppressing high frequency combustion instabilities in liquid rocket engines. This paper describes the damping mechanism by which baffles affect the self-triggered high frequency combustion instabilities in LOX/kerosene liquid rocket engines. The three-dimensional two phase reacting flow in the thrust chamber without baffles is studied numerically with no disturbances in the initial and boundary conditions.Self-triggered pressure oscillations are obtained with the results for the chamber pressure and average axial velocities consistent with experimental data, which indicates that the numerical method is reliable. Then, the model was used to analyze the effects of baffles on the self-triggered pressure oscillations and the pressure wave propagation.High frequency combustion instabilities occur in the chamber without baffles, with the most unstable vibration modes being first-order transverse and second-order longitudinal vibration modes. The transverse vibration modes are damped by the baffles. The propagation and evolution of pressure waves indicate that the self-triggered pressure oscillations mainly develop near the chamber head and that the baffles play an important part in damping the transverse pressure propagations and increasing the energy needed to trigger the higher frequency combustion instabilities. Therefore, the combustion instabilities are suppressed.
