Abstract:Practical passive control solutions for azimuthal thermoacoustic instabilities in annular combustors, which typically involve symmetry-breaking strategies, have garnered increasing attention in the field of modern gas turbines. In this study, we introduce three baffle-type dampers: a regular flat baffle, a baffle-type Helmholtz resonator, and a baffle-type double-layer perforated plate, which are inserted into the plenum of an annular combustor. The experimental investigation of the damping and locking effects on a self-excited first-order azimuthal thermoacoustic instability is carried out under fixed operating conditions, utilizing various numbers and distribution patterns of baffles. The obtained microphone signals from various azimuthal positions are used to examine the acoustic fields using a quaternion ansatz. The analysis reveals that all tested azimuthal modes exhibit either standing or mixed dynamics. It has been observed that baffle-type Helmholtz resonators demonstrate the optimal damping performance. The current experiments on regular flat baffles underscore the influence of baffle arrangement patterns. Poor damping capacities are produced by baffle-type double-layer perforated plates, and in some cases, it is demonstrated that the original degenerate azimuthal mode split into two non-degenerate modes with distinct frequencies and modal structures. Targeting this issue, a low-order network model has been developed to effectively capture the observed splitting phenomena. This model features diverse frequency division characteristics for relevant cases. The outcomes of the low-order network model reveal similar locking effects to those observed in the microphone measurements and flame imaging. Additionally, explicit analytical solutions for the frequency division of the splitting eigenmode pair are derived and subsequently validated.
