Abstract:This study uses ablation testing on C/SiC composite materials under local structured thermal sources with a wide range of heat flux densities, simulating the harsh local conditions caused by discontinuous structural interference on spacecrafts. The thermal response, ablation laws, and ablative perforation time of C/SiC composite materials are obtained under different heat flux densities. The experimental findings demonstrate that there are notable differences in the morphology of the ablation pits under various heat flux conditions. As the heat flux density increases, the temperature of the local structure heat source action center on the target surface increases, the depth and outer diameter of the erosion pits increase, and the wall surface of the erosion pits gradually tends to be smooth. Under the influence of local structural heat sources, the creation of material ablation pits and the process of material perforation are predicted using the improved Umeshmotion+ALE+birth and death element method. For various conditions, the temperature field results and ablation morphology are well predicted by the numerical simulation results. Numerical calculations can be used to analyze the thermal stress and oxidation sublimation contribution rates of targets under the action of structural heat sources.

Abstract:This work conducts ablation experiments and multi-scale numerical simulations of C/SiC composite materials under CW laser action. The highest surface temperature, macroscopic and microscopic ablation morphology, and approximate ablation threshold for C/SiC composites at different power densities were obtained. A multi-scale ablation calculation method for C/SiC composite materials under CW laser action was established using the level-set method. At the meso-scale, a macro-mesoscopic cross-scale surface ablation model was established, taking into account factors such as solid heat transfer, heat exchange of chemical reactions, differential temperature rise process between internal fibers and matrix, and differences in ablation behavior of two-dimensional plain weave fabrics. The experimental and microscale simulation results indicate that different ablation behaviors (oxidation and sublimation) occur in different regions, resulting in “shoot tip” fibers and residual matrix pore morphology. This work can provide theoretical and experimental basis for the design and precision machining of C/SiC materials.

Abstract:To satisfy the requirements for the new generation solid rocket motors on high ablation-resistant throat materials, an idea that merges passive and active thermal protection together was applied to modify carbon/carbon composites. In this study, SiC and ZrC were used as passive thermal protection materials along with the active thermal protection material Cu to modify C/C composites. C/C-SiC-ZrC-Cu composites were prepared by two-step reactive melt infiltration, which involved the infiltration of Si/Zr followed by Cu/Ti. The Cu content of the C/C-SiC-ZrC composites was controlled by controlling the open porosity of the porous C/C-SiC-ZrC composites. Microstructure, composition and ablation resistance of the C/C-SiC-ZrC-Cu composites were investigated. The results showed that the composites with high Cu content and density exhibited excellent short-term ablation resistance under the 42 kW plasma flame, with a negative linear ablation rate after 20 s of ablation. The active heat dissipation of Cu during the ablation process results in a significant reduction of the thermal response temperature on the composite surface. Moreover, the generated Si-Ti-Zr-O layer could form an effective barrier to protect the matrix.

Abstract:Carbon/carbon composites were prepared by densifying a three-dimensional preform made of mesophase pitch-based carbon fiber woven fabric lamination and PAN-based carbon fiber z-pin. Afterwards, SiC coating was prepared on them by pack cementation, and their ablation performances were investigated. Results show that the stacked of pitch-based carbon fiber woven fabrics in Z direction induces a high thermal conductivity of composites in in-plane direction and a sawtooth-structured surface of SiC coating, which helps to decrease the surface temperature (from 1778 to 1614 ℃) and the thermal stress of coating during ablation. Thus, a greatly improved ablation resistance is obtained for the coating in the X-Z plane, showing a mass ablation rate of − 0.01 mg/s and a linear ablation rate of − 0.12 µm/s, respectively, 90.9% and 105.2% lower than that of the X-Y plane. Our findings can provide a meaningful way for the development of high-performance ablation-resistant C/C composites.

Abstract:Ablation of C/C–ZrC composites in a solid rocket motor environment was investigated. The chemical compositions of the combustion gases were calculated using the principle of free energy minimisation. The chemical thermodynamics of the products of the reactions between the combustion gases and ZrC were studied using the FactSage software. The results show that H2O, CO2, and OH are the main oxidising species that consume ZrC/carbon, and the oxidation of ZrC reduces carbon consumption. In addition, melting and evaporation of ZrO2 absorb heat from the combustion gases, relieving the erosive attack on carbon. The ablation of C/C–ZrC composites is controlled by both thermal chemical ablation and mechanical breakage. The cone-shaped fibres and shell-shaped, honeycomb matrix are attributed to thermal chemical ablation, whereas the carbon fragments result from mechanical breakage.

The in situ optical setup captures the real time surface evolution at temperatures up to 1800 degrees C, demonstrating clearly the formation of surface gas bubble, the flowing and merging process of liquid SiO2, which are later well reproduced and explained by the numerical simulation. Four different surface ablation regions on the sample subjected to thermal ablation have been identified by the captured images and flow field streamlines, which reveal the distribution and flow mechanism of SiO2 droplets on the C/SiC surface.

Abstract:Laser ablation behaviors of C/SiC composites were examined in a hypersonic wind tunnel. Parallel laser ablation tests under static air were also conducted, and the ablation behaviors of these two conditions were compared. Mass ablation rates were augmented by 4?9 times when subjected to the hypersonic airflow. Ablation morphologies were significantly different in the micro and macro scales, and the needle-like microstructure of carbon fibers under static air turned to be rough and tattered under the hypersonic airflow. The accelerated ablation rate and the peculiar ablation micro-morphologies were mainly attributed to the strong mechanical erosion induced by hypersonic airflow.

Abstract:This study is focused on a novel high-thermal-conductive C/C composite used in heat-redistribution thermal protection systems. The 3D mesophase pitch-based carbon fiber (CFMP) preform was prepared using CFMP in the X (Y) direction and polyacrylonitrile carbon fiber (CFPAN) in the Z direction. After the preform was densified by chemical vapor infiltration (CVI) and polymer infiltration and pyrolysis (PIP), the 3D high-thermal-conductive C/C (CMP/C) composite was obtained. The prepared CMP/C composite has higher thermal conduction in the X and Y directions. After an ablation test, the CFPAN becomes needle-shaped, while the CFMP shows a wedge shape. The fiber/matrix and matrix/matrix interfaces are preferentially oxidized and damaged during ablation. After being coated by SiC coating, the thermal conductivity plays a significant role in decreasing the hot-side temperature and protecting the SiC coating from erosion by flame. The SiC-coated CMP/C composite has better ablation resistance than the SiC-coated CPAN/C composite. The mass ablation rate of the sample is 0.19 mg·(cm-2·s-1), and the linear ablation rate is 0.52 μm·s-1.

Abstract:When subjected to laser irradiation of different power densities, Ti3SiC2 MAX phase-modified 2-D C/SiC composite experiences various chemical and physical reactions and demonstrates various ablation resistance. An in-situ observation measurement is developed to obtain the instantaneous mesoscopic ablation process for revealing the ablation mechanism. Then scanning electron microscope (SEM) and X-ray energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) tests are performed to determine the reaction process. The results show that the Ti3SiC2 MAX phase can effectively prevent laser irradiation into the material at a laser power density below 636.5 W/cm2. The advantage of ablation resistance disappears at a high laser power density of 2546 W/cm2 due to the decomposition and sublimation of SiC and Ti3SiC2. A chart of ablation mechanisms versus laser power density is constructed based on the instantaneous mesoscopic ablation behavior, macro/meso/microscopic ablation morphology, and temperature history. It is also found that there are two forms of "Temperature Jump" phenomena. One is the accelerated temperature rise in the temperature history of the single-irradiation event. The other is the step point in the maximum temperature curve for multiple irradiation events. The mechanisms of the "Temperature Jump" phenomena are explained based on the interface energy balance.

Abstract:SiC/SiC composites play a pivotal role in aerospace and energy applications for their excellent resistance to high temperatures, corrosion, oxidation, and low density. This paper delves into the ablation behavior irradiated by a femtosecond laser, examining both qualitative and quantitative aspects through micro/nanostructure and component analysis. The findings reveal significant disparities in elements, compositions, and chemical states across the ablation zones, transition zones, and marginal zones. Moreover, a detailed discussion on the active and passive oxidation mechanisms in the ablation zone is presented. Notably, the oxidation product SiO 2 acts as a barrier, impeding oxygen penetration into the material interior.

Abstract:Abstract Ablation resistance as one important factor affecting the service life of SiC ceramic matrix composites that is highly valued in aerospace science and technology. In this study, high thermal conductivity (HTC) graphite films and carbon fibers reinforced C/SiC composites simultaneously, fabricating by precursor infiltration and pyrolysis (PIP) technology, to improve the ablation resistance of C/SiC composites. Three C/SiC composites were prepared from different quantity ratios of 2D fiber cloth to HTC graphite film with values of 1:0, 1:1, and 1:10. The microstructure, mechanical properties, thermal conductivity and ablation performance of C/SiC composites after plasma ablation test at 1500 °C for 600 s were investigated. The results showed that with the increase of graphite films’ contents, the thermal conductivity of composites was increased from 9.78 W/(m·K) to 333.34 W/(m·K). Additionally, the mass loss rate reduced from 1.18 to 0.74 mg/s and the linear ablation rate reduced from 0.64 to 0.18 mm/s, indicating that the addition of graphite films could effectively improve the ablation resistance of C/SiC composites.

Abstract:With the development of material technology and the requirement of miniaturized spacecraft, carbon-based composites have been used in the new generation spacecraft. But the mutual mechanism of action between the carbon-based composites and space environment is not very clear at present. Therefore it is quite important to simulate the ablation property of the carbon-based composites. While it takes much more to finish these space tests, the ground simulating system and corresponding real-time measuring system, whose main part is the ground star-type AC plasma generator. By ground test, the ablation mechanism of carbon-based composites was identified so as to offer some important theory basis for charactering the material property and material design. Both results of surface ablation and volume ablation in different medium were identified. And the surface ablation topography was observed by SEM.

Abstract:To lay a foundation for the feasibility exploration of laser-induced ablation-assisted machining for SiCf/SiC composites, combined with numerical simulation and experiments, the laser-induced ablation mechanism of SiCf/SiC composites was studied, and the relationship between laser parameters and ablation depth was analyzed. The laser-induced ablation products of SiCf/SiC composites mainly consisted of recrystallized 3C-SiC and amorphous SiO2, which were powdery and porous. According to the stratification characteristic, the ablation products were divided into attached smoke dust layer, sublimate recrystallization layer, heat-affected layer, and unaffected layer from the surface to the inside of the material. By adjusting the laser parameters (significant factors were the scanning speed and the scanning spacing), the depth of laser-induced ablation was adjustable and controllable. The ablation depth was greater in continuous-wave (CW) mode due to the continuous energy input. Therefore, CW laser is more suitable for generating larger and various ablation depths to match various cutting allowances.

Abstract:In this study, the CW laser is used as a local heat source to simulate the extreme thermal environment generated by shock wave interference at discontinuities in spacecraft. The ablation behavior of the thermal protection material (C/SiC) is investigated under the combined impact of high-temperature airflow and the local extreme heat source. A novel multi-field coupling numerical computation software was presented to examine this strong coupling process of fluid-solid-thermal-ablation. The program was modified using the ALE + umeshmotion ablation calculation method in the ABAQUS software to mimic the process of the material's ablative boundary retreating under the action of the CW laser until the target was perforated. ANSYS Fluent software was used to do the numerical analysis of the high-speed airflow. The results of wind tunnel experiments and numerical simulations indicate that, compared to the effect of local heat sources in static air, irregular ablation pits are formed on the material surface under the action of local heat sources in high-temperature flow fields, resulting in higher ablation rates due to mechanical denudation effects. Analysis of the localization characteristics of the flow field near the ablation pit reveals that the shock wave generated downstream of the ablation pit leads to an increase in gas temperature, pressure, and density. When the ablation amount reaches a certain threshold, the gas in the ablation pit forms vortices, leading to an increase in local heat flow and pressure.

Abstract:C/C-SiC-(ZrxHf1−x)C composites were prepared by the reactive melt infiltration method. The microstructure of the porous C/C skeleton and the C/C-SiC-(ZrxHf1−x)C composites, as well as the structural evolution and ablation behavior of the C/C-SiC-(ZrxHf1−x)C composites, were systematically investigated. The results show that the C/C-SiC-(ZrxHf1−x)C composites were mainly composed of carbon fiber, carbon matrix, SiC ceramic, (ZrxHf1−x)C and (ZrxHf1−x)Si2 solid solutions. The refinement of the pore structure is beneficial to promote the formation of (ZrxHf1−x)C ceramic. The C/C-SiC-(ZrxHf1−x)C composites exhibited outstanding ablation resistance under an air–plasma environment at around 2000 °C. After ablation for 60 s, CMC-1 appeared to possess the minimum mass and linear ablation rates of only 2.696 mg/s and −0.814 μm/s, respectively, which are lower than those of CMC-2 and CMC-3. During the ablation process, a Bi-liquid phase and a liquid–solid two-phase structure were formed on the ablation surface which could act as an oxygen diffusion barrier to retard further ablation, which is responsible for the excellent ablation resistance of the C/C-SiC-(ZrxHf1−x)C composites.

Abstract:As the development of hypersonic aerospace technology progresses, greater challenges are presented for solid rocket motors (SRMs) thermal protection, and the ablation performance of insulation materials needs to be further improved. Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) as a new type of reinforcing nano-filler, readily react with the oxidative components in the working gas during SRMs operation, limiting their excellent performance. In this study, we propose to coat the commonly used reinforcing filler, SiO 2 , on the surface of CNTs to suppress their susceptibility to oxidation and investigate the effects of adding CNTs, SiO 2 , and CNTs@SiO 2 to the matrix on material properties. The results show that the addition of CNTs@SiO 2 significantly improves the ablation resistance of the insulation material, with the linear ablation rate of M-@SiO 2 -2 being 56% lower than that of M-SiO 2 -2. Based on the analysis of the material's antioxidation performance and the strength of the resulting char layer after ablation, the reasons for the improvement of ablation performance are discussed. By conducting high-temperature tube furnace tests, the composition and structure of the char layer at different temperatures are studied, and it is found that CNTs in the CNTs@SiO 2 formulation can directly provide the carbon source required for the carbon thermal reduction reaction, promoting the directional growth of SiC whiskers. Based on these findings, an ablation mechanism is proposed.
