Abstract:Pore size distribution is an important factor that affects the moisture diffusion and permeability properties of cement-based materials. For cement paste, it is assumed that the mesopores (100 nm-0.01 mm) and macropores (0.01 mm-1 cm) can be neglected compared to the micropores (<100 nm). Based on the surface energy theory, moisture chemical potential of pore water is introduced to explain the liquid-gas equilibrium in pores with different radius. Using chemical potential as an intermedium, a quantitative relationship between micropore size distribution and water adsorption isotherms can be established. The micropore size distribution can be treated as an explanation of the moisture adsorption behavior, and by using adsorption isotherms, the micropore size distribution can be estimated conveniently. Mortar and concrete can be regarded as a combination of cement paste and aggregates; thus, besides the micropores, the mesopores and macropores are also taken into consideration. Finally, the general empirical estimation equations for pore-size distribution are developed for cement, mortar, and concrete, which can be used for refined modeling and simulating of durability-related issues, such as frost action, water permeability, and drying shrinkage. Critical Features of Microstructure Development of Early-Age Cement Paste Revealed by Non-Contact Electrical Resistivity Measurement

Abstract:The microstructure evolution of cement paste governs the material properties on the macrostructural level. Recently, a non-contact electrical resistivity measurement has been applied to study the pore structure evolution of early-age cement-based materials. In this study, the capillary pore tortuosity development of early-age cement paste is predicted by the non-contact electrical resistivity measurement. The results demonstrate that the capillary pore tortuosity of cement paste evolves slightly at the first few hours but begins to increase substantially at the percolation threshold of the hard core/soft shell (HCSS) particles. By coupling the predicted evolution with the HCSS model, it is found that the capillary porosity and the thickening rate of the hydration product shell increase with the increase of the water to cement (w/c) ratio. Early-age C-S-H gel is revealed to grow in a lengthened manner, and the greater is the w/c ratio, the more elongated is the C-S-H gel. The juxtaposition of the nanometre-sized elementary bricks is the hidden force for the elongated growth of C-S-H gel. It is disclosed that the initial distance between cement particles is a fundamental factor that governs the microstructure development of cement paste. The hydration of cement preferentially achieves the particle percolation, and the hydration products grow more loosely when the initial distance between cement particles is greater.

Abstract:Pore structure is an essential factor that influences the mechanical behavior and durability of cement-based porous materials with or without added binders. An empirical model for water vapor sorption isotherms was employed to evaluate the pore structure of hardened cement pastes incorporating granulated blast furnace slag and silica fume. The model is an extension of the Brunauer–Emmett–Teller multilayer adsorption theory. Assuming cylindrical-shaped pores and an adsorbed liquid-like layer between the pore surface and gas phase, pore size distributions of the blended cement pastes were estimated. Calculated pore size distribution curves were compared with those measured by mercury intrusion porosimetry. Added granulated blast furnace slag and silica fume had minor effects on the monolayer adsorption capacity, but reduced the energy of the first and subsequent adsorption layers. The adsorbed liquid-like layer generated sharper pore size distribution peaks that were shifted to the mesoporous region. The pore size distributions were comparable with those determined by the mercury extrusion branch, but differed from those obtained by the mercury intrusion branch. Hysteresis of the water vapor adsorption–desorption isotherms and mercury intrusion–extrusion curves was due to the entrapment of a non-wetting phase in the porous system, further promoted by residual mercury in the pores following mercury extrusion.
Pore structure characterization of cement pastes blended with high-volume fly-ash

Abstract:The pore structure of cement pastes incorporating fly-ash was evaluated during their hydration process through gravimetry method, mercury intrusion porosimetry (MIP) and nitrogen adsorption/desorption (NAD) methods. The pore structure of samples is characterized by the total porosity, pore size distribution (PSD), pore internal surface area as well as characteristic pore sizes. The correlation between the hydration process and the formed pore structure is investigated. The results indicate that: (i) w/b ratios have determinant impact on all characteristics of pore structure; (ii) fly-ash replacement ratio can influence the pore structure significantly at early age but this influence becomes less important with sample age by fly-ash hydration process; (iii) the total porosity and specific surface area are well correlated with the chemical kinetics of hydration through hydration degree or the formed gel/space ratio but the critical pore size is rather independent on the chemical kinetics.

Abstract:The permeability of cement pastes depends on their pore structures. In this paper, various indirect and direct methods were used to comprehensively reveal the microstructures; then, the permeability was predicted by the Katz-Thompson model (K-T model), pore network model, and computational fluid dynamics (CFD). The pore structure characteristics obtained from different methods were compared, which include porosity, pore size distribution (PSD), specific surface area, pore connectivity, and tortuosity. The PSD by water vapor sorption is correlated to the re-saturation of C-S-H sheets and gel pores. Furthermore, results from low-field nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) show a finer pore structure due to swelling of C-S-H sheets during water saturation pretreatment. The permeability evaluated based on pore structures by different experimental methods is noticeably different, depending on the detected pore size ranges of the measurement greatly.

Abstract:The surface fractal dimensions of high-volume fly-ash cement pastes are evaluated for their hardening processes on the basis of mercury intrusion porosimetry (MIP) data. Two surface fractal models are retained: Neimark's model with cylindrical pore hypothesis and Zhang's model without pore geometry assumption. From both models, the logarithm plots exhibit the scale-dependent fractal properties and three distinct fractal regions (I, II, III) are identified for the pore structures. For regions I and III, corresponding to the large (capillary) and small (C-S-H inter-granular) pore ranges respectively, the pore structure shows strong fractal property and the fractal dimensions are evaluated as 2.592–2.965 by Neimark's model and 2.487–2.695 by Zhang's model. The fractal dimension of region I increases with w/b ratio and hardening age but decreases with fly-ash content by its physical filling effect; the fractal dimension of region III does not evolve much with these factors. The region II of pore size range, corresponding to small capillary pores, turns out to be a transition region and show no clear fractal properties. The range of this region is much influenced by fly-ash content in the pastes. Finally, the correlation between the obtained fractal dimensions and pore structure evolution is discussed in depth.

Abstract:Capillary absorption capacity has an important influence on the durability of concrete and is closely related to pore structure. In this study, the pore structure and capillary water absorption of samples were determined by low‐field nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy and the gravimetric method, respectively. The test results show that the most probable pore diameter and equivalent pore diameter of cement‐based materials increase with increasing water to cement ratio (w/c) and fly ash (FA) content and decrease with increasing curing age and cement to sand ratio (c/s). The porosity of cement‐based materials increases with increasing w/c and c/s, decreases with increasing curing age, and first decreases and then increases with increasing FA content. The curves for the amount of capillary water absorption per unit area in specimens with the square root of time for cement‐based material under different influence factors are similar and show obvious linear and stable stages. The capillary absorption coefficient is nearly linearly related to w/c or c/s, and nonlinearly related to curing age or FA content, observation that are well correlated with the porosity and square root of the equivalent pore radius. A modified model is proposed for the capillary absorption coefficient with consideration of the pore structure, and the theoretical results of the model are in good agreement with the test results.

Abstract:The nanoindentation technique was used to measure the micro-mechanical properties of individual phase in hardened cement pastes through discrete nanoindentation,and the properties over large areas through grid nanoindentation.Comparisons were made between pastes with water to cement (w/cm) mass ratio of 0.3,0.4 and 0.5 and the slag content of 0,50% and 70% for water to cement=0.3 paste,to illustrate their differences on the phase distribution and the micro-mechanical properties.Significant portion of composite phase was found in slag-blended paste.A three-phase model was used to determine the volume fraction of the unhydrated phase included in the composite.A nanoindentation-based methodology was proposed to calculate the degree of hydration of Portland cement and slag-blended cement pastes.The calculated degree of hydration are more consistent with the results obtained from thermal gravimetric method for Portland cement pastes than that of the slag-blended pastes.

Abstract:The results of a macro-scale experimental study performed on a hardened class G cement paste [Ghabezloo et al. (2008) Cem. Con. Res. (38) 1424–1437] are used in association with the micromechanics modelling and homogenization technique for evaluation of the complete set of poroelastic parameters of the material. The experimental study consisted in drained, undrained and unjacketed isotropic compression tests. Analysis of the experimental results revealed that the active porosity of the studied cement paste is smaller than its total porosity. A multi-scale homogenization model, calibrated on the experimental results, is used to extrapolate the poroelastic parameters to cement pastes prepared with different water-to-cement ratio. The notion of cement paste active porosity is discussed and the poroelastic parameters of hardened cement paste for an ideal, perfectly drained condition are evaluated using the homogenization model.

Abstract:Two cement pastes (water to cement ratio, w/c = 0·5, 0·3) were investigated through mercury intrusion porosimetry (MIP) and nitrogen adsorption/desorption (NAD) methods at different hardening ages. The pore structure is characterised by specific surface area, pore volume and pore size distribution. The results show that: (a) the pore structure has strong scale dependence and NAD–MIP joint measurement helps to identify the different pore structure patterns; (b) MIP total pore volume captures the global process of the hydrates filling process with curing age, the mesopore (2–70 nm) volume is dominated by hydrates filling for w/c = 0·5 but countered by high-density calcium-silicate-hydrate growth for w/c = 0·3; (c) specific surface area is sensitive to calcium-silicate-hydrate growth and specific surface area values are likely to confirm that high w/c (0·5) favours low-density calcium-silicate-hydrate growth whereas low w/c (0·3) facilitates high-density calcium-silicate-hydrate formation.

Abstract:Porosity of hardened complex binder pastes containing fly ash or quartz powder cured under different temperature regimes was determined using mercury intrusion porosimetry.The morphology of hardened pastes was investigated using a scanning electron microscope.The strength of pastes was measured.There was only a physical filling effect for both active and inert mineral admixtures during the initial hydration period.The porosity and strength of the pastes were controlled by the proportion of mineral admixtures.High hydration temperature advances the pozzolanic reaction of fly ash.With the prolongation of hydrating age the pozzolanic reac-tion of fly ash takes place,which densifies the pastes and enhances the development of their strength.The diff-erence of influence between active mineral admixture and inert ones on the structure and properties of complex binders emerges gradually in the later hydration period.

Abstract:This study investigates the microstructural changes of cement paste due to the inclusion of polymeric microfiber at different water-to-cement (w/c) ratios. A procedure to quantify the porosity of epoxy impregnated interfacial transition zone (ITZ) is also presented. Results show that the microstructures of the ITZ beneath and above a microfiber, with respect to the gravity direction, are largely different. Though the ITZ at both sides of the fiber are more porous than the bulk matrix, the porosity of the lower ITZ (i.e., the ITZ beneath a fiber) is significantly higher than the upper side (i.e., the ITZ above a fiber). This difference can be attributed to the combined effects of fiber on the initial packing of surrounding cement grains and on the settlement of the fresh mixture. The porosity gradients of the upper ITZs are found to be nearly identical for all the tested w/c ratios, while the porosity gradients of the lower ITZs become steeper when the w/c is higher. The lower side is also found to be the preferred location for the precipitation of calcium hydroxide crystals. Results of energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) and nano-indentation analyses confirm that the chemical and mechanical properties of the ITZ are also asymmetric.

Abstract:The capillary absorption capacity exerts an important effect on the durability of cement-based materials and is closely related to the pore structure. In this study, a variety of cement-based specimens were examined. The capillary water absorption and pore structure of the samples were determined using a gravimetric method and mercury intrusion porosimetry (MIP), respectively. The capillary water absorption coefficients for different water–binder ratios, diverse types and dosages of mineral admixtures, and various preloads were measured. The experimental results were analyzed and compared with data available in the current literature. The test results showed that the capillary water absorption performance of cement-based materials increased with an increasing water–binder ratio, first decreased and then increased with an increasing fly ash dosage, decreased with an increasing mineral power dosage, and decreased when the preload was less than a critical value and increased rapidly when the preload was greater than the critical value. The relationship between the capillary absorption coefficient and porosity was nearly linear. Water absorption by cement-based materials mainly correlated with pore diameters in the range of 10~1000 nm. The capillary water absorption coefficient increased continuously with the increase of pore fractal dimension.

Abstract:A microstructure-guided diffusivity model of cement paste is devised to explore the dependence of the relative diffusivity on the microstructure evolutions of cement paste from fresh state via non-spherical cement particles hydration to hardened state. The microstructure-guided diffusivity model contains three main components: (1) the microstructure of fresh cement paste is generated to simulate the initial state of non-spherical cement particles in water; (2) a continuum-based hydration model of non-spherical cement particles (HYD-NSP) is proposed to describe the evolutions of various phases (hydration products and pores) from fresh state to hardened state; (3) a random walk model is implemented to the microstructures of hydrated cement paste digitalized at the resolution of 0.1 μm/voxel for the determination of relative diffusivity of cement paste. Although this study takes five kinds of Platonic particles and sphere as an introductory example, this microstructure-guided model is readily applicable to other complex microstructures induced by the hydration of non-spherical cement particles. Finally, we utilize the framework to evaluate the influence of the geometrical shape of cement particles on the hydrated microstructure and relative diffusivity of cement paste. Results shed light on that the relative diffusivity increases with the increase of sphericity as a shape descriptor of cement particle. This is due to the specific surface area decreasing with the increase of sphericity, resulting in less hydration products and more porosity, which ultimately increases the relative diffusivity.

Abstract:In this study, the rheology, fluidity, stability, and time-varying properties of cement paste with different substitute contents of silica fume (SF) were investigated. The result showed that the effects of SF on macro-fluidity and micro-rheological properties were different under different water–cement ratios. The addition of SF increased the yield stress and plastic viscosity in the range of 2.61–18.44% and 6.66–24.66%, respectively, and reduced the flow expansion in the range of 4.15–18.91%. The effect of SF on cement paste gradually lost its regularity as the w/c ratio increased. The SF can effectively improve the stability of cement paste, and the reduction range of bleeding rate was 0.25–4.3% under different water–cement ratios. The mathematical models of rheological parameters, flow expansion, and time followed the following equations: τ(t) = τ0 + k0t, η(t) = η0eat, and L(t) = L0 − k1t, L(t) = L0 − k1t − a1t2. The SF slowly increased the rheological parameters in the initial time period and reduced the degree of fluidity attenuation, but the effect was significantly enhanced after entering the accelerated hydration period. The mechanism of the above results was that SF mainly affected the fluidity and rheology of the paste through the effect of water film thickness. The small density of SF particles resulted in a low sedimentation rate in the initial suspended paste, which effectively alleviated the internal particle agglomeration effect and enhanced stability. The SF had a dilution effect and nucleation effect during hydration acceleration, and the increase of hydration products effectively increased the plastic viscosity.

Abstract:Based on the hypothesis of mono-sized particle suspension and taking the mechanism of superplasticizers into account,a model for microstructure of fresh cement paste with superplasticizier incorporated was presented.The model was verified by direct observing microstructural morphology using ESEM.According to the model and the spread diameters tests of fresh cement pastes with different water to cement ratios and superplasticizer dosages,the water volume fractionin different forms in each cement paste system could be calculated.

Abstract:The mechanical properties and the fractions of individual phases at microscale were measured by nanoin-dentation and back scattered electron (BSE)image analysis,and they can be used as the input in modeling the me-chanical properties of cement paste.The mechanical properties of cement paste were measured by microindentation. The effect of individual phases on the effective modulus of hardened cement paste was quantified by comparing the measured and homogenized paste modulus.It is found that the effective modulus of pore needs to be set to 1 2 GPa as input for homogenization.Meanwhile,the high density hydrated calcium silicate gel (HD-CSH)and the low density hydrated calcium silicate gel (LD-CSH)need to be viewed as two different phases in modeling.Whereas,different clinkers can be regarded a single phase.The effective paste moduli calculated by both Mori-Tanaka scheme and self-consistent scheme agree well with the measured paste modulus.

Abstract:Low-heat and moderate-heat cement concrete (LHCC and MHCC) are compared to study the internal pore development and water migration law in the process of strength formation. NMR and industrial CT are used for measuring. The results show that the hydration rate is the fastest within 3d, and strength increase is also the most obvious. Compared with 1d, the compressive strength of LHCC increases by 44%, accompanied by a 21% decrease of capillary water proportion. In contrast, the strength of MHCC increases by 56%, following with a 19% decrease on capillary water proportion. Although the total porosity of LHCC is significantly higher than that of MHCC during curing, the pore growth rate is lower. The pore structure of MHCC is better, in which the proportion of larger pores (>10 mm3) is obviously lower. Finally, the relationship among compressive strength, water migration and internal porosity is in good agreement with the experimental values.

Abstract:Mechanical vibrations have a significant impact on the performance of cement-based materials in engineering. In this study, the particle distribution characteristics and hydration mechanism of cement-based paste during mechanical vibrations were clarified, including examination of hardened properties and thermodynamic modeling. X-ray fluorescence was used to determine the distribution of raw material particles. Differential thermal analysis was employed to characterize the in situ hydration process of paste. Thermodynamic modeling determines the dependency between raw material distribution and the corresponding hydration process. The results indicated that low-frequency vibrations extend the setting time and induce lower flexural strength of cement paste during early ages. Mechanical vibrations result in significant inhomogeneous distribution of element content, which was attributed to the difference in raw material composition. The hydration degree after mechanical vibrations decreased the pore-size distribution of hardened paste. The calculated particle distributions were inconsistent with the obtained hydration process and porosity development.
