Abstract:X ray computer tomography for the measurement of triaxial stresses within a low atomic order material is presented to aim at the shortcoming of conventional X ray stress analysis and AST2001 X ray stress analyzer of USA. The device for X ray computer tomography of residual stresses and the measurement theory is discussed. The computer procedure for the measurement of X ray computer tomography is designed. With the diffraction data provided, complete triaxial stresses of an arbitrary point on the surface of and within material investigated can be evaluated. The stress tensors, stress gradients and stress free lattice spacing of material investigated can also be calculated. And a self control mechanism for measurement and evaluation is presented.
Method to Analyze and Evaluate the Depth Profile of the Three Dimensional Residual Stresses State with X-ray

Abstract:A new method to determine, non-destructively, the full three-dimensional residual stress state with depth resolution has been developed to direct at the insufficiency of X-ray method at the measurement of light element materials such as beryllium. The analysis incorporates a model function based on the linear theory of elasticity, under consideration of its conditions of equilibrium as well as the surface boundary condition. The principle of analysis and evaluation for this method and the required device, measurement are introduced. With this method a computer program, which can do full three dimensional stresses analysis at arbitrary point in the surface of and whin a light element material to deal with the experiment is designed. Finally, the program is verified with the experimental data of beryllium. The results show that the parallel components σ 11 , σ 22 vary a lot with the depth while shear components σ 12 ?σ 13 and σ 23 and the parallel components σ 33 are all small.

Abstract:Beryllium is a light rare metal, which is broadly used in nuclear energy, aviation and aerospace industry. As a structural material, the residual stresses in it during processing have a harmful influence upon its products in use. So it is very important to measure the residual stresses. Overcome the shortcoming of traditional X ray residual stress measuring techniques, X ray computer tomography is presented. This technique used in the present analyzer can non-destructively measure light metals' residual stresses with depth resolution, such as beryllium, by altering measuring and evaluating method. The residual stresses at the surface nearby welding of arc Beryllium weldment , the depth of 0.5 mm and 1.0 mm under the surface are evaluating by X ray computer tomography, meanwhile the stress free lattice spacing, d 0 , of beryllium (103) plane is calculated with this technique. The result shows that d 0 is closed to the one calculated by the lattice spacing formula of crystallograqhy.

Abstract:Residual stress refers to self-equilibrating stress present within materials, with the potential to significantly affect manufacturing processes and performance. Therefore, accurately and quantitatively measuring residual stress is always of great importance. This study provides a comprehensive review of various characterization techniques for residual stress, including their principles, development history, applications, and limitations. Initially, several destructive techniques such as the hole-drilling method, ring-core method, deep hole drilling method, slitting method, and contour method are summarized. Subsequently, three nondestructive techniques based on X-ray/electron diffraction, magnetic signals, and ultrasonic signals are evaluated. In the final part of this overview, special attention is given to a newly-developed technique for measuring residual stress, which combines incremental focused ion beam (FIB) milling and digital image correlation (DIC). Our review aims to guide further investigations on residual stress and identify the future development of techniques for measuring residual stress.

Abstract:<p>Residual stress is one of the main factors affecting the mechanical properties of materials, such as their strength, plasticity and surface integrity. For instance, tensile stress conditions can adversely affect material performance or component life, while compressive stress conditions can improve material fatigue strength. During the processing of integrated aviation structures, machining deformation caused by residual stress has become one of the most prominent manufacturing problems. Therefore, it is very important to measure and evaluate the stress for real applications. This paper reviews the research of residual stress measurement methods over the past five years by classifying them according to the measurement methods appearing in each stage. The existing problems and difficulties of each measurement technology are summarized, and future trends are forecasted. This paper provides a reference for further in-depth study of residual stress measurement technologies.</p>

Abstract:Distribution of residual stress was evaluated using the X-ray diffraction technique with image plate (IP). The IP is the 2D-detector for the X-ray radiation. This enables us to obtain phase stresses in the material from a single X-ray exposure. It is also expected that the method will be quicker for X-ray stress measurements than conventional sin(2) psi method. In this study, the stress distribution of coarse-grained material was investigated. The oscillation method was used to obtain the sufficient of the crystals. An experiment was performed with ferrite and austenite duplex stainless steel, has a maximum grain size with 200 mum. It was confirmed that the present method is suitable to determine the residual stress of the composite material.

Abstract:Though there are a variety of experimental techniques available for residual stress measurements, diffraction-based measurements have the unique advantage of estimating the individual components of the residual strain matrix in a crystalline material. This is then converted to residual stresses with appropriate continuum elasticity model(s) and X-ray elastic constants. In particular, measurements based on electron or neutron diffractions have their complexities or availability issues. The laboratory X-ray diffraction, on the other hand, may provide an easy resource and an effective tool. Such measurements range from two tilt methods to more extended d-sin2ψ measurements and multiple {hkil} grazing incident X-ray diffraction. Measurements can even be conducted on single crystals with micro-Laue diffraction and extended to stress ODF (orientation distribution function) calculations. These techniques are unquestionably extremely specialized, where measurement uncertainty plays an important role in the effectiveness plus reproducibility of the data. Unfortunately, standard textbooks or review articles typically describe some, but not all, of the techniques. In this overview, different techniques of X-ray diffraction for the determination of residual stresses in crystalline material have been summarized. It is hoped that potential users may benefit from the deliberations.

Abstract:Residual stress constitutes an integral part of the total stress acting on any component in service. It is imperative to determine residual stress to estimate the life of critical engineering components, especially those that are welded. The stresses caused by non-uniform temperature distribution due to welding and the effect of these multiaxial stresses upon service performance are discussed. A controlled thermal severity test (CTS) was performed on mild steel plates bolted together, with anchor welds deposited on opposite sides. After cooling, bithermal and trithermal test welds were deposited one after the other. Varying welding stresses were deliberately introduced by using different thicknesses of both plates to change the thermal severity numbers (TSN). The main experimental technique used here to determine the magnitude and nature of residual stress is based on X-ray diffraction (XRD). It was utilised to develop and standardise other techniques. The XRD method is based on the peak shiftin the diffraction profile due to the presence of stress using a sin2 ψ method. The peak shift is determined by orienting the sample at different angles ± ψ to the incident X-ray beam. The semidestructive technique of hole drilling and use of a strain gauge was also employed to determine residual stress in CTS specimens. The magnitude, nature, and direction of principal stresses were determined by relieving stresses through incremental blind hole drilling and measuring strain values at each step. The surface displacements arising due to hole drilling can also be determined by laser holography. A sandwich holography technique was developed to avoid unwanted rigid body motions of samples due to hole drilling when relieving stresses. Stress values were obtained by measuring fringe displacement between two exposures of a sandwich hologram, due to hole drilling. Results on the change in residual stress values with TSN are discussed. The residual stress values determined by XRD and sandwich holography were found to be comparable, and stress values obtained by hole drilling/strain gauge measurement were higher than these values. The reasons are discussed.

Abstract:To overcome the limit of the common residual stress measurement methods in measuring interior residual stresses in engineering parts, a novel residual stress measurement method known as crack compliance method was introduced. Based on the fundamental theoretical relations of liner-elastic fracture mechanics, a narrow slot normal to the face was machined incrementally into a part to release the residual stresses. After the released strains were measured by surface strain gauges, the interior stress distributions were derived in 7055 aluminum rolled-plates. Experimental results show that the method is more sensitive and accurate than the incremental hole-drilling method and X-ray diffraction method, and suited for measuring interior residual stresses in engineering rolled plates.

Abstract:Neutron diffraction is an advanced experimental technology relying on the neutron source scientific device, which can obtain statistical information of the internal microstructure of materials in a non-destructive manner. It is an indispensable characterization method for establishing the intrinsic relationship between the microstructure, mesoscopic, and macroscopic structure and performance of materials. At the same time, it is an important method for quantitative non-destructive evaluation of residual stress inside key components of major technologies and equipment. This article briefly introduces the measurement principle and basic methods of neutron diffraction technology, elaborates on the research progress of this technology in material foundation and cutting-edge exploration, and evaluates its position and role in engineering component design, manufacturing, service, and safety assessment. Finally, based on the common requirements for the development of new materials and processes, the development potential of neutron diffraction technology for cross scale and multi parameter analysis is discussed, as well as its future development direction in high-throughput characterization.

Abstract:Residual stress analysis methods can be coarsely cataloged into the following types:diffraction method,stress release method,and sound,light,magnetic method,etc.Among them,X-ray diffraction and hole-drilling technique are two of the most mature and most widely used methods.When the stress is uniform and the value is small,these two methods can give similar results.However,when the sample is small and its microstructure is complex,there will be a significant difference between the results given by both of the mentioned methods.In this paper,residual stress on the surface of the same pure copper sample is analyzed by X-ray diffraction and ring-core method,the analysis results are compared and the related factors are discussed.The applicability of X-ray diffraction method and ring core method is discussed:the former is suitable for crystal material and in non-destructive examination,and the latter is more suitable to reflect current stress level.In addition,the purpose of stress testing should be taken into account in method selection.

Abstract:X-ray diffraction method is widely used in non-destructive stress measurement.The application of X-ray measurement of near surface residual stress in aluminum alloy thick plate has been studied,the eleetropolishing techniques of the surface of aluminum alloy plate and X-ray measurement in the material of aluminum alloy were summed up.The surface residual stress of one quenched 7075 aluminum alloy plate has been measurement,the stress range and distribution,as well as the general rules were examined,the stress distribution of the edge effects were discussed.

Abstract:Based on the theory of X-ray stress measurement, a method of measurement and representation for the inter-phase stress of double-phase material was established. The systematic error of the instrument has been effectively reduced by the difference between diffraction angles of two phases. The inter-phase stress of an actual material (SiCP/6061AI composites) was measured, and it was verified that this method has a high measuring precision.

Abstract:The residual stress in cold rolling could decrease the accuracy of ring parts. Because many factors could cause residual stress, it’s difficult to calculate it theoretically. At present, a measurement method was generally used to study the residual stress. For example, X ray could be used to measure residual stress in rings. Through the measurement of residual stress, it could not only obtain the residual stress level after ring rolling, but also validate the finite element model to predict the residual stress distribution. However, because the ring surface was circle, it needs to cut a plane for X ray measure, and it increases measurement inaccuracy. This method only could be suited for qualitative analysis of residual stress in cold ring rolling, and it is not suitable for quantitative analysis of residual stress distribution.

Abstract:Residual stress measurement by interpreting diffraction rings is well developed. The ring is produced by many grains contributing individual diffraction spots, each from their local stress environment. Local stresses limit the bulk strain resolution of X-ray stress methods. The local stresses can be so large, traditional methods fail to produce meaningful results. However, if the local stress environment could be understood, it provides additional value for measuring and predicting material behavior. Experimental determination of the internal stress for one grain from a ring has several challenges. In some special cases, these have been overcome using synchrotron radiation. Here, using a Bruker D8 laboratory X-ray diffractometer and a 2D Hi-star detector, a method of sensing and analyzing X-ray diffraction cones in three dimensions was introduced. After a certain sample detector distance, individual grains can be resolved in spots on the ring. The method requires collecting a sequence of 2D frames at increasing sample to detector distances. The entire three-dimensional X-ray diffraction pattern (XRD3) could be used to determine the average 2θ ring position. This allows new types of strain measurements. Other applications for tracking spots from grains are in development.
