Abstract:The need for more sustainable adhesive formulations has led to the use of silane-based adhesives in different industrial sectors, such as the automotive industry. In this work, the mechanical properties of a dual cure two-component prototype adhesive which combined silylated polyurethane resin (SPUR) with standard epoxy resin was characterized under quasi-static conditions. The characterization process consisted of tensile bulk testing, to determine the Young's modulus, the tensile strength and the tensile strain to failure. The shear stiffness and shear strength were measured by performing a thick adherend shear test. The in-plane strain field was obtained using a digital image correlation method. Double-cantilever beam and mixed-mode tests were performed to assess the fracture toughness under pure modes. The prototype adhesive showed promising but lower properties compared to commercial solutions. Furthermore, the adhesive was modified via the addition of three different resin modifier additives and characterized via measuring the shear and tensile properties, but no enhancements were found. Finally, the adhesive was formulated with three different SPUR viscosities. The critical energy release rate analysis showed an optimum value for the medium viscosity SPUR adhesive.

Abstract:This work explores the possibility of synthesizing moisture-curable silane-terminated poly(urethane-urea)s (SPURs) of low viscosity. First, NCO-terminated urethane prepolymers were prepared, followed by silane end-capping. The impact of polyol molecular weight and the ratio of isocyanate to polyol (NCO/OH) on viscosity and the properties of SPUR were examined. As alternatives to the organotin catalysts traditionally used for the polyurethane synthesis and curing processes, bismuth carboxylate catalysts were evaluated. In addition, the effect of organofunctional groups in the aminosilane structure (R1–NH–R2–Si(OR3)3), i.e., R1 (alkyl, aryl or trimethoxysilyl-propyl), the spacer R2 (α or γ) and alkyl group R3 (methyl or ethyl), was examined. The chemical and physical structures of the SPUR were investigated by nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (NMR), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) and the mechanical properties were evaluated by tensile tests. The results reveal that silane-terminated, moisture-curable polyurethanes can be successfully synthesized and cured with bismuth carboxylate catalysts. SPUR exhibiting low viscosity, with adequate tensile strength and elongation can be prepared using environmentally benign bismuth carboxylate catalyst having a high metal content of 19%–21%, by utilizing secondary aminosilane end-cappers and an optimal combination of the polyol molecular weight and NCO/OH ratio.

Abstract:A series of novel silicone-modified polyesters (SPE) were prepared by substituting part of diol with low molecular weight hydroxyl-terminated poly(dimenthylsiloxane) (PDMS). Then, isophorone diisoclanate (IPDI) as hard segments and 1,4-butanediol as chain extender were added to SPE to prepare a silicone-modified polyurethane (SPU). The effects of the type of diol, diacid, and hydroxyl-terminated PDMS, and the amount of hydroxyl-terminated PDMS on the preparation and surface properties of SPU were investigated. It was found that the amount of PDMS incorporated into a polyester chain was relatively higher when 1,6-hexanediol (HDO) and 1,10-decandiol (DDO) were used as diol and the PDMS with lower molecular weight was used as organosilicone compound. Consequently, the SPU coats with HDO as diol, adipic acid (AA) as diacid, and short chain PDMS as silicone segment had the lowest surface-free energy since it had the highest and most homogeneous distribution of silicone segments at its top layer surfaces.

Abstract:A novel hydroxy silane coupling agent (HO-silane) was synthesized via Michael addition reaction between 2-hydroxyethyl acrylate and 3-mercaptopropyl-trimethoxysilane, which was then used to synthesize the silane-terminated polyurethane (SPU). The silane-terminated polyurethanes, which showed low viscosity due to the end-capping by HO-silane, could be chain-extended by butanediol to enhance the performance of SPU in non-solvent condition. The effects of chain extender, 1,4-butanediol, and NCO/OH molar ratio ( R value) on the properties of silane-terminated polyurethane were investigated. The results show that the hydroxy silane coupling agent and the silane-terminated polyurethane that can be moisture-cured at ambient temperature were successfully synthesized. It is found that by introducing the 1,4-butanediol segment into SPU main chain, the viscosity of SPU was increased, but the tack free time of SPU was shortened, and the hardness and tensile strength of the moisture-cured SPU film were enhanced. As the R value increased, the tack free time of the silane-terminated polyurethane was prolonged, and the hardness and the tensile strength of the moisture-cured film were increased, but the elongation at break was decreased. When the amount of 1,4-butanediol was 10 wt% and the R value was 1.3, respectively, silane-terminated polyurethane with viscosity of 51,000 mPa·s (80% solid content) can be obtained. The tensile strength of the moisture-cured film was 1.1 MPa, and the elongation at break was 713.4%, which shows great potential for sealant and coating applications.

Abstract:Waterborne coatings have obtained more and more attention from researchers with increasing concerns in environmental protection, and have the advantages of being green, environmentally friendly and safe. However, the introduction of hydrophilic groups leads to lower hydrophobicity and it is difficult to meet the requirements of complex application environments. Herein, we proposed an optimization approach of waterborne polyurethane (WPU) with vinyl tris(β-methoxyethoxy) silane (A172), and it was found that the surface roughness, mechanical properties, thermal stability and water resistance of WPU will be increased to a certain extent with the addition of A172. Moreover, the hydrophobicity of the coating film is best when the silicon content is 10% of the acrylic monomer mass and the water contact angle reaches 100°, which could exceed two-thirds of the research results in the last decade. Therefore, our study can provide some theoretical basis for the research of hydrophobic polyurethane coatings.

Abstract:Silane‐terminated Polyurethane (SPU) is in high demand in the sealant and adhesive industries because of its exceptional cohesive strength and excellent adhesive properties. To close a self‐curable SPU resin was synthesized using a two‐step solution polymerization process for 12 h at pH 2.8 using the sol–gel method. Subsequently, the polyurethane prepolymer's NCO moiety was terminated by VTMS silanol to prepare SPU resin. FTIR and liquid state NMR were used to study VTMS hydrolysis in an acidic medium. Explored the effects of VTMS on SPU properties, including crystallinity, Mn and Mw, viscosity, gel fraction, thermal, surface, and mechanical. FTIR and NMR (1H and 13C) spectra confirmed the successful termination of the prepolymer's unreacted diisocyanate with the hydroxyl moiety of silanol. XPS and FTIR were used to analyze the chemical structures of urethane, urea, siloxane, and the hydrogen bonds between SPU moiety. Increased wt% of silanol exhibits increased gel fraction (80%–91%) with a decreased degree of swelling (76%–45%) showing the formation of a cross‐linked structure. Including siloxane in polyurethane showed a synergetic effect, resulting in enhanced thermal stability through reduction of weight loss. The SPU exhibited a three‐stage degradation pattern, accompanied by decreased glass transition temperature and crystallinity. Siloxane enrichment increased SPU surface roughness (Rq‐218 and Ra‐69 nm) and hydrophobicity (94°–103°). Silane wt% increase causes significant changes in Young's (2.19–51 N/mm2) modulus, strain %, and adhesive strength (4.60–5.62 MPa). Silane‐terminated polyurethane can be used successfully as an adhesive and sealant.

Abstract:Pressure-sensitive adhesives (PSAs) are a critical class of adhesives used in numerous applications. Acrylic copolymers and polyurethanes are two main categories of polymers that PSAs are made from. However, to take advantage of unique properties of both of them, polyurethane-acrylic hybrid PSAs have been proposed. To date, for synthesis of these hybrid PSAs, there should have been an acrylic comonomer containing a specific functional group to be able to react with the isocyanate group. This research was conducted to eliminate the need for such an acrylic comonomer with a specific functional group through silanization. For this purpose, firstly, a silanized polyurethane (SPU) was synthesized through silanization of a polyol. Subsequently, copolymerization of two acrylic comonomers was performed in the absence or presence of SPU. In the next step, prior to adding the acrylic comonomers to the SPU, silane was added to SPU to enable higher grafting. The PSA containing 0.04 wt % of silane showed a peel force, static shear strength, and tack of 1.6, 1.4, and 2.9 times those of the acrylic PSA on stainless steel, respectively. With this proposed silanization strategy, it is possible to design a wide variety of polyurethane-acrylic hybrid polymers.

Abstract:In this study, polypropylene glycol (PPG) and isophorone diisocyanate (IPDI) with molecular weights (Mws) ranging from 8000 to 18,000 were used as starting materials to synthesize silylated polyurethanes (SLPUs) according to alkoxysilanes. FT-IR, GPC, and DSC were used to analyze composition and structure of the synthesized SLPU. Shore A-type, C-type hardness testers, and UTM were used to measure hardness, tensile strength, and elongation, respectively. It was revealed that mechanical properties and viscosity increased as the Mw of PPG increased. In particular, PPG 12,000 and (3-aminopropyl) triethoxysilane SLPU showed excellent storage stability and good mechanical properties. When alkoxysilane was applied as a capping agent, it was found that methoxysilane had a faster curing speed than ethoxysilane. However, it had insufficient workability and storage stability. Mechanical properties of ethoxysilane were relatively superior to those of methoxysilane.

Abstract:Three series of silicone modified polyurethane acrylate (SPUA) prepolymers were prepared from dicyclohexylmethane-4, 4′-diisocyanate (HMDI), PPG1000, triethylene glycol (TEG), 2-hydroxyethyl acrylate (HEA), and multi-hydroxyalkyl silicone (MI-III) with tris(trimethylsiloxy)silyl propyl side groups. Their structures were confirmed by 1H NMR, 13C NMR, and Fourier transformed infrared (FTIR) analysis, and SPUA films were obtained by UV curing. The properties of films were investigated by attenuated total reflection (ATR)-FTIR, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), water contact angle (WCA), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), differential scanning calorimeter (DSC), water and hexane resistance, and tensile testing. The results showed that the structures and dosages of MI-III could influence the polymerization properties, surface properties, water and n-hexane resistance, and thermal and tensile properties of SPUA. For instance, the surface aggregation of tris(trimethylsiloxy)silyl propyl groups (even ~2.5 wt%) could endow SPUA films with less microphase separation, good hydrophobicity, lipophilicity, thermal stability, and mechanical properties. Interestingly, obvious regular winkles appeared on the surfaces of SPUAIII films, which are characterized by relatively high WCA values. However, relatively smooth were observed on the surfaces of SPUAIII films, which also exhibit lower water absorption ratio values. Furthermore, the ordinary cotton textiles would be transformed into hydrophobic and oleophilic textiles after treating with SPUA simply, and they were used in the oil/water separation study. Among them, consistent with water and hexane resistance analysis of SPUA films, SPUAII treated cotton textiles are characterized by relatively small liquid absorption capacity (LAC) values. Thus, phenyl groups and side-chain tris(trimethylsiloxy)silyl propyl groups are helpful to improve the hydrophobicity and lipophilicity of SPUA films. SPUAII-5 (even with 5 wt% MII) treated cotton textiles could efficiently separate the oil/water mixture, such as n-hexane, cyclohexane, or methylbenzene with water. Thus, this material has great potential in the application of hydrophobic treatment, oil/water separation, and industrial sewage emissions, among others.

Abstract:Novel silicone-based coating materials were prepared by the copolymerization of alkoxysilanes with pre-synthesized tailored polyurethane/polyurea copolymer end-capped with siloxane. The structure of the pre-synthesized copolymer and that of the obtained silicone-polyurethane/polyurea copolymer (SPPU) with different hard segment (HS) contents were analyzed by an FT-IR spectroscopic method. The molecular weight and molecular weight distribution of the SPUU was determined by Gel Permeation Chromatography (GPC). The thermal properties of the SPUU copolymers were performed by Thermogravimetric Analysis (TGA). The mechanical and adhesion properties of the copolymers were also investigated by standard methods. Their morphology was studied by Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM). The electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) evaluation shows that the protective and anticorrosion properties of these coating materials do not strictly depend on the hard HS content.

Abstract:Surface modification of polyurethane ( PU ) by appropriate treatment and introducing silane coupling agent to PU surface was used to improve the adhesion of PU to silicone rubber (SR). FTIR and X-ray energy spectrometer were employed to investigate the surface treatment and graft reaction of silane coupling agent, while surface morphology and properties of materials were characterized by scanning electron microscopy and water contact angle. Different PU/SR interfaces after oscillation and shear were compared as well. The results indicated that the hydrophilicity of PU was improved after surface treatment, which generated more hydroxyl groups that could react with isocyanate-terminated silane coupling agent. When condensed room temperature vulcanized SR was poured onto PU surface,the silane coupling agent on PU surface could condense with it to improve the adhesion of PU and SR by connecting them with chemical bonds.

Abstract:Silane-modified polyurethanes (SPU-MDI, SPU-IPDI, and SPU-HDI) were synthesized by reacting various isocyanates (MDI, IPDI, and HDI) with poly(ether triol), followed by siloxane capping. The branched structures and properties of these SPUs were systematically characterized and evaluated. These SPU resins, upon moisture curing, yield elastomers exhibiting excellent mechanical properties and high transmittance (>92%). Incorporating polyether tertiary alcohol into the polymer chain markedly reduces the viscosity and average particle size of the SPUs due to its de-entangling effect. Specifically, the SPU-HDI resin displayed a low viscosity of 2548 mPa·s at 25 °C and an average particle size of 3.12 nm. Notably, elastomers derived from SPU-MDI and SPU-IPDI resins demonstrated tensile strengths greater than 10 MPa, surpassing that of SPU-HDI-based elastomer (∼5.0 MPa). This significant enhancement broadens the potential applications of these materials.

Robust and Durable Superhydrophobic Coatings with Antipollution Flashover Performance via Silane-Modified Polyurea

Abstract:The inadequate hydrophobicity and the degradation in usage seriously hampered the applications of the existing antipollution flashover coatings. In this paper, a superhydrophobic polyurea coating with antipollution flashover ability was fabricated through chemically grafting the silica onto the chains of polyurea by utilizing silane coupling agent and hydrophobic modification. It is demonstrated that the coating exhibits outstanding antipollution flashover performances. Noteworthy, the surface pollution flashover voltage has been increased by 33.8% compared with the room temperature vulcanizing silicone rubber (RTV silicone rubber). In addition, the volume resistivity is above 1.0 × 1012 Ω·m, and the dielectric strength achieves to 28.85 kV/mm, which represents excellent insulating property. Furthermore, the superhydrophobic polyurea coating exhibits outstanding abrasion resistance, adhesion, acid-base resistance, and durability. As a result, it holds great promise for use in preventing pollution flashover in electrical insulators.

Abstract:The paper presents a new method to prepare waterborne anionic alkoxysilane-terminated polyurethane dispersion (SPUD) which is substantially free from organic solvent: the NCO-terminated polyurethane (PU) containing carboxylic ions in backbone is synthesized by melt polycondensation with toluene 2,4-diisocyanate (TDI), polypropylene oxide (PPO) and 2, 2-dimethylolbutanoic acid (DMBA), the terminal NCO groups are reacted with 3-aminopropyltriethoxylsilane (APTES) to give alkoxysilane-terminated PU (SPU), and the waterborne SPUD with higher aminosilane content (10 wt% in SPU) is obtained by phase-inversion emulsification with the aid of protective colloid (polyethermethylsiloxanes, PEMS) and external emulsifier (sodium dodecyl sulfate, SDS). The anionic PU and SPU are characterized by FT-IR, gel permeation chromatography (GPC), differential scanning calorimeter (DSC) and thermo-gravimetric analysis (TGA). The thermal studies show that SPU has lower T g than anionic PU as well as thermal stability. The effects of emulsifier, protective colloid, solid content and pH value on the storage stability of waterborne SPUD are investigated, respectively. The results indicate that the storage stability decreases with increasing viscosity and dispersing ratio, whereas particle size and polydispersity index (PDI) are hardly affected by the solid content, the amount of emulsifier and protective colloid. The SPUD prepared with about 2 wt% SDS, 5 wt% PEMS, 31 wt% solid content and pH value of 7 is stable for more than 6 months at 50 °C and 8 months at room temperature, while exhibiting excellent freeze-thaw stability. The corresponding cured films exhibit excellent mechanical properties with 19.2 MPa tensile strength and 320 % elongation at break.

Abstract:Polyurethane (PU) refers to the polymer containing carbamate groups in its molecular structure, generally obtained by the reaction of isocyanate and alcohol. Because of its flexible formulation, diverse product forms, and excellent performance, it has been widely used in mechanical engineering, electronic equipment, biomedical applications, etc. Through physical or chemical methods, ionic groups are introduced into PU, which gives PU electrical conductivity, flame-retardant, and antistatic properties, thus expanding the application fields of PU, especially in flexible devices such as sensors, actuators, and functional membranes for batteries and gas absorption. In this review, we firstly introduced the characteristics of PU in chemical and microphase structures and their related physical and chemical performance. To improve the performance of PU, ionic liquids (ILs) were applied in the processing or synthesis of PU, resulting in a new type of PU called ionic PU. In the following part of this review, we mainly summarized the fabrication methods of IL-modified PUs via physical blending and the chemical copolymerization method. Then, we summarized the research progress of the applications for IL-modified PUs in different fields, including sensors, actuators, transistors, antistatic films, etc. Finally, we discussed the future development trends and challenges faced by IL-modified PUs.

Abstract:Advanced materials provide important support in the fields of economic growth, military construction, energy development and technological leap as basic, strategic and pioneering role. The purpose of this paper is to develop advanced materials of polyurethane adhesives. Dimethyldichlorosilane was hydrolyzed in a limited degree under acidic conditions, and then ethylene glycol and diphenylmethane diisocyanate were added respectively to prepare isocyanate-terminated polyurethane prepolymers, whose structure was characterized by FTIR and GPC. Hydroxyl-terminated hyperbranched poly (aryl ether ketone) was prepared by controlling the molar ratio of phloroglucinol and 4,4’-difluorobenzophenon, and its structure was confirmed by FTIR. Polyurethane adhesives were prepared by using isocyanate-terminated polyurethane prepolymer as component A and hydroxyl-terminated hyperbranched poly (aryl ether ketone) as component B, the shear strength and thermal properties were characterized. The results show that the polyurethane adhesives possess excellent thermal stability, adhesion properties, water and oil resistance.
