Abstract:The thermal properties of biomass fuels such as cotton stalk briquette in the small furnace of biomass pyrolysis and combustion with moving bed and updraft was investigated.The results showed that the rate of temperature increase or temperature decrease of cotton stalk briquette with relatively high density was lower than that of other solid fuels.However,the time of solid volatilization was prolonged and combustion at high temperature was extended and the thermal efficiency of the furnace was increased.The effect of quantity of briquettes filled into the furnace on stable gas burning and duration of blaze at high temperature was remarkable.Cotton stalk briquette filled fully into furnace reactor excelled cotton stalks proper in combustion performance,the thermal efficiency reached 39.3% and was 1.72 times higher than that for cotton stalks'.

Abstract:Fluidized bed combustion/gasification is one of the main means of biomass utilization in a efficient and extending scale way.Due to the fact that biomass is easy to form sintering at relatively low temperature,so it affect the safe stable operation of system and the improvement of the utilization efficient of energy.This paper systematically conclude the combustion/gasification sintering characteristic temperature of different biomass with different bed materials,analyse the internal connection between biomass species,alkali metals content,reaction atmosphere and sintering temperature,combined with related research to analyze and summarize the mechanism of sintering,and to analyze and compare the advantages and disadvantages of the prediction models of sintering temperature,In the end,the paper put forward active suggestions for further research on combustion/gasification sintering mechanism and control techniques,optimization of prediction models,hoping to provide meaningful reference for relative deep research and for the improving of the extending scale utilization level of biomass energy.

Abstract:The Biomass Coal briquette is an effective practical method to control air pollution caused by coal combustion, as well as to reduce GHG emissions through substitution of fossil fuel with biomass. The objective of this research is to establish a new briquetting technology to simplify the briquetting process and reduce energy consumption, by utilizing the linkage function of biomass fiber. Effects of coal type, briquetting pressure, biomass shape and content, and the water content in raw material on briqutting performance were examined initially at an industrial pilot scale. Results show that briquetting pressure to fix the linkage of biomass fiber is no more than 120 MPa, and a higher pressure causes a negative effect. The reasonable lower limit of biomass content is about 15%. Biomass drying in the air for a certain period (water content is generally less than 12%) is suitable for briquetting using the new mechanism. With a coal water content of 6-9% (depending on coal type), increasing the biomass proportion and decreasing briquetting pressure to a certain degree could significantly offset the negative effect of water content on high-pressure briquetting. Mechanical performance improves with higher biomass proportion and lower water content in the raw material. Because of the advantages of the new briquetting method, the process line can be simplified dramatically. The power consumption is about 15kWh per ton briquette. Total processing cost is about RMB20 (equivalent to US$2.5) per ton briquette, including capital investment and operation cost, less than 1/3-1/5 of that in conventional ones.

Abstract:Biomass energy is the most abundant resource in the nature and it can be regenerated. Its sulphur content and ash content is lower, and its hydrogen content is higher than coal. It is one of the important energies which human depend on it to survive. Particle biomass fuel is a kind of solid fuel made by biomass material, with many advantages, such as high efficiency, clean molding, easy ignition, and low carbon dioxide emission, etc. It can replace other fossil fuels and can be used in the civil fields, such as cooking, heating, and other industrial fields, such as boiler burning and power generation. In this paper, the idea that particle biomass fuel is added into sintering production is presented. At the laboratory conditions, Φ 200 mm × 600 mm pot grate tests were carried out for three particle biomass fuel ratio (0%, 0.3%, 0.5%) respectively, vertical sintering speed were measured, they are 28.57 mm/min, 17.91 mm/min and 17.65 mm/min. Sinter metallurgical property were compared, reductive degree index are 65.72%, 81% and 83%, tumbler index are 70.13%, 51.03% and 50.87%, reduction degradation index (RDI + 6.3 mm) are 37.7%, 25.42% and 24.88%. The results show that it is difficult to use native biomass fuel in sintering process, Because it is easier to absorb more water, this leads to water content in the mix material higher than raw material, bed permeability is decreased, sintering speed is lower, the strength of sinter is decreased, but reduction degree index is higher. In the future biomass fuel carbonized will be further studied in sintering process.

Abstract:Bio-briquette is a new kind of coal briquettes made up of coal, biomass and sulphur retention agent. Bio-briquette technology combines irrenewable fossil energy and renewable biomass, embodying both functions of synthetic utilization of energy and reduction of air po-llution. In this paper, the current development of bio-briquette technology in and abroad is introduced and the production crafts, compressive strength, firing (burning) performance, combustion mechanism and sulphur retention characteristics of bio-briquette are analyzed. What′s more, the necessity for development of bio-briquette technology and some problems of industrialization in China are expatiated. At the end of this paper, the prospect and orientation of bio-briquette technology are discussed.

Abstract:Utilizing agriculture co-products and agricultural residues directly leads to Energy, Economic, and Environmental sustainability. Sugar production industries produce a considerable amount of sugarcane bagasse (SB) as a co-product, whereas SB is used in paper-mill sectors, which have a large amount of waste as sugarcane bagasse pith (SBP). In this view, the novelty of the present study aims to ensure the economic viability of the SBP briquette production plant, after that, briquette-based producer gas (PG) generation and application to compression ignition (CI) engine for diesel substitution. The economic analysis includes the Net Present Value (NPV) and Profitability Index (PI) for the feasibility check. And gasifier-engine analysis includes the effect of gasification equivalence ratio (GER), engine compression ratio (CR), and load on engine brake thermal efficiency (BTE), diesel saving, Sound, Exhaust gas temperature (EGT), and emissions (CO, HC, CO2, NOx). Further, operating variables were optimized with the desirability approach of Response surface methodology (RSM). In the result, NPV and PI values were found to be Rs 49,64,379.5 (≈0.06 million USD) and 1.98, respectively. However, the economic feasibility of the plant is sensitive to capital cost, briquette market price, and discount percentages. Regarding gasifier-engine performance, the maximum diesel substitution was found to be 66.15% at dual fuel (DF) mode engine run. RSM-based optimization result showed the optimum operating setting of 0.10 GER, 16 CR, and 9.93 kg load at 1500 rpm with a composite desirability of 0.798. Accordingly, at optimal input parameters, the magnitudes of engine performance as BTE, Sound, CO, HC, CO2, and NOx were found to be 27.18%, 91.21 db, 0.10%vol., 53.19 ppm, 2.33%vol., and 8.43 ppm respectively. Thus, the higher value of the economic index and substantial amount of diesel fuel saving through the gasifier-engine system ensures the economic feasibility of briquetting and power generation technology.

Abstract:This paper presents the partial results of a study on obtaining compacted fuel from fine-grained coal fractions and biomass. The aim of the study was to determine the impact of selected parameters of the extrusion process and the applied binder (mechanical durability and density of the products). The fuels were formulated using the extrusion process. Raw materials used in the research were: Fine-grained coal (flotation concentrates), biomass (hydrolytic lignocellulose), and a wide spectrum of organic and mineral binders and their compositions. During the investigations, the variable factors were the following: Extrusion pressure, preparation of the mixtures for extrusion (mixing time and temperature of the mixture), composition of the extruded mixtures (share of fine-grained coal and biomass and type of binder). It was found that it is possible to extrude mechanically durable briquettes from mixtures containing fine-grained coal products and biomass. Under the conditions of the experiment, the most favorable mechanical durability was characterized by briquettes containing in their composition 90% of coal and 6% of biomass (in relation to the dry state). The briquettes with the most favorable physico-mechanical properties were obtained using organic binders—Starch (based on wheat and potato starch) and cellulose derivatives.

Abstract:The present paper was aimed to investigate the physicochemical properties and combustion characteristics of corn straw briquette as a fuel energy. The results of physicochemical properties displayed that corn straw briquette has higher volatile matter, lower ash content, and higher heating value. Combustion characteristics and kinetic analysis were investigated using thermogravimetry analysis at various heating rates of 10, 15, and 20 °C/min. It was observed that the maximum burning rate shifted to a higher temperature as the heating rate increased. In addition, a lower heating rate would help in better heat transfer, leading to less mass residual. In contrast, the combustion characteristic index showed a nearly 2-fold increase under a higher heating rate, indicating a good combustion performance. The combustion kinetics were expressed using isoconversional methods with Kissinger–Akahira–Sunose and Ozawa–Flynn–Wall methods, which authenticated the average activation energy at 108.85 and 114.42 kJ/mol, respectively. These results can provide a theoretical basis and data support for further utilization of agriculture biomass briquette.This article has not yet been cited by other publications.

Abstract:Biomass is increasingly considered as an important resource of alternative fuels. The prospect of such technologies to convert widely available biomass materials into convenient gas fuel is very attractive. The Institute for Thermal Power Engineering of Zhejiang University proposed a novel biomass gasification project. A series of fundamental experiments has been made. The results show that the system can product gas and steam simultaneously and the fuel conversion is over 80%. Furthermore, the system has the advantages of low pollutant emissions, easy operation, low investment and high economical efficiency. This project can convert a wide range of biomass into medium-energy gas with lower cost and easier operation. It can be widely used in the areas where biomass is available.

Abstract:The importance of parameters such as compaction pressure, binder percentage and retention time and their interaction in the production of carbonized briquettes for domestic or industrial use cannot be overestimated, as they have a considerable impact on the properties of the resulting briquettes. This study used Box-Behnken Response Surface Methodology (RSM) and Analysis Of Variance (ANOVA) to show how the above parameters and their interactions significantly influence the Higher Heating Value (HHV), ash content and Impact Resistance Index (IRI) of the biofuels obtained. The briquettes are characterized in accordance with American Society for Testing and Materials ASTM D-(5865 and 3172). IRI is determined by the drop test. The Niton XLT900s X-ray fluorescence spectrometer is used for mineralogical analysis. The peel starch used as a binder is characterized by the Association of Official Agricultural Chemists standard. This starch has a starch purity of 89.8 %, an HHV of 13974 kJ/kg, a protein content of 4.79 % and a sugar content of 1.3 %. The HHV of the biofuels ranged from 23783 to 26050 kJ/kg, their ash content from 2.86 to 5.24 %, and the IRI from 136.36 to 500 %. The significant effect of binder on these results is confirmed (p < 0.05). The Standard deviations of ± 21.425 kJ/kg, ± 0.021 % and ± 2.121 % were obtained between the experimental values and those of the mathematical models developed to predict HHV, ash content and IRI. The optimum parameters for industrial biofuel production correspond to a binder percentage of 10 %, a compaction pressure of 75 kPa and a retention time of 7.49 min. The experimental results under these conditions are: 25596 kJ/kg, 3.01 % and 375 % for HHV, ash content and IRI. In correlation with the absence of certain heavy metals, the study confirms that the briquettes produced are suitable for domestic use.

Abstract:In this work, thermal behavior and gas emission characteristics of coal, different kinds of biomass chars, and their blends were evaluated by using the thermogravimetric analyzer coupled with a mass spectroscope. The chars were prepared from wheat straw at 300 degrees C and 500 degrees C under N-2 and CO2 atmosphere, respectively. The results show that the pyrolysis temperature has a greater effect on the combustion characteristics of biomass char than the pyrolysis atmosphere. NOx emissions were reduced effectively with the addition of biomass chars. The study also reveals that there is an obvious improvement in the combustion behavior of coal when blended with biomass chars.

Abstract:The residue derived from biomass gasification is abundant and harmful to the environment. Hence, to solve this problem is very imminent. It is a good way to make biomass gasification residue into barbecue charcoal (BC), which has practical significance. In the paper, BC was fabricated using briquetting drying process (BDP) and secondary carbonization process (SCP), respectively. The effects of the BDP and SCP were both investigated. The optimum conditions for BDP were to use composite binder, whose compositions were 10% of starch solution and 10% of polyvinyl alcohol solution. Similarly, the optimal conditions in the SCP were obtained as follows: 17% of tar ratio, 500 degrees C of carbonization temperature and 4 h of carbonization time. Under these conditions, the compressive strength of BC was greater than 500 N/piece, which could meet the strength standards for the production of barbecue application. Simultaneously, the physical and chemical properties of BC were studied. The results showed that the combustion time of the two kinds of BC was more than 90 min. The pollutant emissions of BC were reduced, such as SO2 and NOx. It was proved that the residue after biomass gasification could be used to produce BC and it's friendly to the environment.

Abstract:This paper analyzed theoretically the combustion characteristics of corn straw, wood powder and mixed wood powder pellets in thermogravimetric analyzer. The thermochemical dynamic parameters (E and K0) of these three biomass fuel pellets responding to the different combustion periods were compared, and the effects of different pellet forming processes on combustion characteristics were analyzed. Combined with the combustion features in the furnace, the dominant factor that influences the combustion efficiency is the volatile rate. Some guiding suggestions were put forward for improving pellets quality and spreading its application flexibility for different types of furnaces.

Abstract:The abundant coal powder generated as a waste by-product during the lignite upgrading process is harmful to the environment. Lignite briquetting offers a practical solution for lignite usage. Altering the process parameters of briquetting can significantly improve briquette quality. In this paper, the characteristics of lignite briquettes, including drop strength and compressive strength were investigated. A combination of quadratic orthogonal rotation combination designs and regression equations established the best process parameters to be 40% weight of #2 upgraded coal, 20% weight of briquetting moisture, 25 MPa of briquetting pressure, and 12 h of drying time. The low error variance of the drop strength and compressive strength, at 0.01% and 1.83% respectively, verified the feasibility of the model. The analysis by scanning electron microscope (SEM) showed that the surface morphology of briquette was denser than that of raw coal. Finally, the combustion test of briquettes revealed that the particulate matter emission (PM2.5) of briquette was 16.7% lower than that of raw coal. In summary, these data provide a theoretical reference for realizing the reasonable utilization potential of waste products derived from industrial processes.

Abstract:The paper discusses the mechanical properties of waste-derived briquettes, their ignition and combustion behavior, and emissions. The briquettes based on coal slime blended with straw/peat/sawdust/waste compressor oil were used. 100% Coal slime and 100% biomass briquettes were reference cases. The proportion of coal slime in the multi-component briquettes was at least 85%. The samples were tested on a laboratory scale. Briquettes based on coal slime and used oil were characterized by moisture resistance and high energy performance indicator, yet they were brittle. Starch improved their impact resistance considerably. However, when added to mixtures of coal slime and straw, starch led to greater destruction of initially rather strong briquettes. The addition of starch slightly increased the water absorption characteristics of all the samples during storage. The ignition temperatures of briquettes of different compositions ranged from 350 to 610 °C. The briquette ignition characteristics tended to worsen when starch was added. A multi-criteria evaluation of fuels, considering cost, ignition, combustion behavior and emissions, as well as mechanical properties, showed that the highest efficiency is typical of 100% sawdust briquettes. For the fossil fuel briquettes, the best synergistic effect resulted from the combination of 90% coal slime and 10% straw. The "coal slime-peat-starch" is an undesirable combination, because it reduces the efficiency indicators for all the categories considered and makes the fuel more expensive.

Abstract:High strength clean briquettes production by using recycling coal fines is of great realistic significance in saving coal resources and protecting the environment. Blends consisting of a long-flame coal fines and coal slime (CS) and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) as binders were used in the preparation of briquettes. To produce a qualified clean briquette with enough briquette strength, the effects of the binder content, briquetting pressure, and moisture content were systemically investigated. The results indicated that the briquettes prepared by using blended binder with 20 wt.% of CS and 1 wt.% of PVA showed better compressive strength (10.2 MPa) and drop strength (98.3%). CS with particle size less than 0.2 mm could fill in the gap between the coarse coal particles uniformly, thus reinforcing the embedded state and leading to a higher briquette strength. Moreover, the strength of the briquettes was also affected by the briquetting pressure and moisture content. At briquetting pressure of 60 kN and optimum moisture content of 14%, the highest briquette strength was achieved. The hydroxyl content of the briquettes by adding CS and PVA increased significantly. In this condition, a highly viscous network colloid was formed when the PVA and water were mixed together. When the briquettes were dried, the colloid could produce a dendritic structure, which was mechanically embedded between adjacent coal particles.

Abstract:Aims: This study aimed to increase the utilization of biomass-derived from the waste of coconut and peanut shells by making them as briquettes, as an alternative to fuel. The scarcity of petroleum because of its increasingly limited existence encourages all parties to take part in the development and discovery of new alternative energies. This is expected to overcome one of the most important of the many problems facing this country. The method used in this research is to start with a literature study of materials from various sources about the benefits and manufacturing of briquettes from biomass waste as an alternative energy source to be further tested for quality. This involves a heat test, water content test, ash content test and determination of the flying matter. Results: The test results showed that natural gas emissions were below threshold, namely 0-30 ppm CO, 0-3.6 ppm H2S, and undetectable NOx. After evaluation, the results showed that with the addition of 30% of the biomass, the ignition time was reduced and the remaining unburned briquettes or bottom ash was reduced by 68.68%. Conclusion, significance, and impact of study: The results help the community and the parties involved related to appropriate bio briquettes technology. It also eventually becomes one of the solutions to assist the government in solving problems related to alternative fuels to petroleum.

Production and characterization of coconut shell charcoal-based bio-briquettes as an alternative energy source for rural communities

Abstract:The increasing demand for sustainable energy solutions has driven interest in the utilization of agricultural residues, such as coconut shells, for bio-briquette production. This study investigates the impact of binder types (cassava and corn) and concentrations (5 wt%, 10 wt%, 15 wt%) on the properties of bio-briquettes made from dried coconut shells with two particle sizes (40 mesh and 60 mesh). The experimental evaluation focuses on several performance indicators, including density, shatter index, percentage moisture content (PMC), percentage volatile matter (PVM), percentage ash content (PAC), percentage fixed carbon (PFC), higher heating value (HHV), ignition time, burning time, and boiling time. The results indicate that briquettes with 10 % fine charcoal cassava binder achieved the highest density of 0.764 g/cm³ due to improved compaction. Briquettes with 15 % coarse charcoal corn binder demonstrated the highest shatter resistance at 96.99 %, reflecting their superior structural integrity. The highest PMC and PVM values were observed in briquettes with 15 % coarse charcoal cassava binder, at 8.13 % and 31.25 %, respectively. Conversely, the highest PAC was 16.34 % for 5 % coarse charcoal cassava binder. Briquettes with 10 % fine charcoal corn binder exhibited the highest PFC of 70.79 % and HHV of 31.51 MJ/kg. Boiling times ranged from 15 min 53 s to 36 min 35 s, with the shortest boiling time for briquettes with 10 % fine charcoal corn binder. The findings highlight the superior mechanical properties and energy performance of bio-briquettes with specific binder concentrations and particle sizes. Abstract:Typical biomasses (wheat straw, maize straw and rice straw) were used for studying the carbonization of biomass, preparation and performance characterizations of charcoal briquettes. The combustion with charcoal briquettes was conducted on a self-built platform and the emission characteristics of sulfur and nitrogen pollutants were investigated. The results indicated that it is optimal for biochar preparation as a fuel with 450-500 degrees C of carbonization temperature, 180 min of holding time and 5 degrees Cmin(-1) of heating rate. Biochar briquettes will have strong mechanical strength at briquetting pressure of 25 MPa, particle size of less than 1 mm and the ratio of modified corn starch of 4.32 wt%. Compared with biomass burning, biomass charcoal briquettes had better combustion performance and the emissions of pollutants were reduced.
