Abstract:The thermal properties of biomass fuels such as cotton stalk briquette in the small furnace of biomass pyrolysis and combustion with moving bed and updraft was investigated.The results showed that the rate of temperature increase or temperature decrease of cotton stalk briquette with relatively high density was lower than that of other solid fuels.However,the time of solid volatilization was prolonged and combustion at high temperature was extended and the thermal efficiency of the furnace was increased.The effect of quantity of briquettes filled into the furnace on stable gas burning and duration of blaze at high temperature was remarkable.Cotton stalk briquette filled fully into furnace reactor excelled cotton stalks proper in combustion performance,the thermal efficiency reached 39.3% and was 1.72 times higher than that for cotton stalks'.

Abstract:According to the experiment research of anthracite coal mixed burning in boiler of Huadian Qingdao Power Generation Corporation Limited,the anthracite coal,lean coal and black coal with low-volatile matter mixed burning scheme was defined initially.The burning safety and economical efficiency of anthracite coal blended with different coals and at different blending proportion or under different mixed burning mode were comprehensively compared,and an optimized coal blending scheme was proposed,then the blended coal brand of Huadian Qingdao Power Generation Corporation Limited was formed finally.

Abstract:High strength clean briquettes production by using recycling coal fines is of great realistic significance in saving coal resources and protecting the environment. Blends consisting of a long-flame coal fines and coal slime (CS) and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) as binders were used in the preparation of briquettes. To produce a qualified clean briquette with enough briquette strength, the effects of the binder content, briquetting pressure, and moisture content were systemically investigated. The results indicated that the briquettes prepared by using blended binder with 20 wt.% of CS and 1 wt.% of PVA showed better compressive strength (10.2 MPa) and drop strength (98.3%). CS with particle size less than 0.2 mm could fill in the gap between the coarse coal particles uniformly, thus reinforcing the embedded state and leading to a higher briquette strength. Moreover, the strength of the briquettes was also affected by the briquetting pressure and moisture content. At briquetting pressure of 60 kN and optimum moisture content of 14%, the highest briquette strength was achieved. The hydroxyl content of the briquettes by adding CS and PVA increased significantly. In this condition, a highly viscous network colloid was formed when the PVA and water were mixed together. When the briquettes were dried, the colloid could produce a dendritic structure, which was mechanically embedded between adjacent coal particles.

Abstract:The Biomass Coal briquette is an effective practical method to control air pollution caused by coal combustion, as well as to reduce GHG emissions through substitution of fossil fuel with biomass. The objective of this research is to establish a new briquetting technology to simplify the briquetting process and reduce energy consumption, by utilizing the linkage function of biomass fiber. Effects of coal type, briquetting pressure, biomass shape and content, and the water content in raw material on briqutting performance were examined initially at an industrial pilot scale. Results show that briquetting pressure to fix the linkage of biomass fiber is no more than 120 MPa, and a higher pressure causes a negative effect. The reasonable lower limit of biomass content is about 15%. Biomass drying in the air for a certain period (water content is generally less than 12%) is suitable for briquetting using the new mechanism. With a coal water content of 6-9% (depending on coal type), increasing the biomass proportion and decreasing briquetting pressure to a certain degree could significantly offset the negative effect of water content on high-pressure briquetting. Mechanical performance improves with higher biomass proportion and lower water content in the raw material. Because of the advantages of the new briquetting method, the process line can be simplified dramatically. The power consumption is about 15kWh per ton briquette. Total processing cost is about RMB20 (equivalent to US$2.5) per ton briquette, including capital investment and operation cost, less than 1/3-1/5 of that in conventional ones.

Abstract:The aim of this study was to investigate the properties of an organic binder used in cold-bonded briquettes (CBBs) prepared from two different iron bearing materials. The applied binder is a type of starch as indicated by chemical analysis, iodine-starch staining and Fourier transform infrared analyses. Thermogravimetric differential scanning calorimetry showed that the binder pyrolysis undergoes four stages: moisture desorption, ash volatilization, pyrolysis of organic matter and decomposition of materials with high activation energy. The difference between the dry and heat-treated samples during the macroscopic failure process is the instability propagation of the crack. The CBB shows a low decrepitation index at 700 °C. The returned fines of CBBs used with the organic binder were applied in two blast furnaces. The industrial trials showed that the CBBs do not influence the performance of the blast furnace and can reduce the fuel consumption rate. The curing rate of the binder decreases, and the growth rate of compressive strength decreases during the curing process. Iron ore particles are bonded together and exist in the form of aggregation after mixing with water and binder. The edges and corners of the particles become blurred, and the original surfaces of the particles are covered with binder film, the surface of which is covered with fine particles. The multi-branched structure of amylopectin provides omnibearing adhesion sites, thus forming binder agglomeration and film leading to a strong adhesion between binder and iron ore particles. Binder film and binder agglomeration work together to make the CBB perform well.

Abstract:In order to find briquette coal with mechanical characteristics close to those of raw coal samples, we conducted triaxial compression experiments on raw coal and briquette coal samples with different proportions of cement contents. The mechanical characteristics and acoustic emission (AE) characteristics of the coal samples in the triaxial compression process were analyzed in detail. The test results show that the evolution of deformation and strength characteristics of the briquette coal and raw coal samples follow certain common laws. The confining pressure can improve the mechanical properties of both types of coal samples: as the confining pressure continues to increases according to the set values, the elastic modulus, peak strain, and peak strength of both samples show an increasing linear trend. When the value of the confining pressure setting was the same, the compressive strength of the raw coal samples exceeded that of briquette ones, but the deformation and shape variations of the latter exceeded those of the former. When performing triaxial compression experiments on both kinds of coal samples, the AE amplitude and counts showed a close correlation with the stress evolution curves. When the confining pressure was set to 5 MPa, 20% cement content briquette coal was seen to be the closest to raw coal samples regarding mechanical and AE characteristics.This article has not yet been cited by other publications.

Abstract:The mechanical thermal expression (MTE) process, which has been widely studied as a dewatering technology, could also be used for the briquetting of lignite. In this study, the effect of operating conditions on the compressive strength and shatter index of briquette produced by the MTE process was investigated. The compressive strength of briquette increased with the increase of pressure and temperature. The increase in pressure and temperature also resulted in a decrease of residual moisture content in briquettes, which had a positive effect on the compressive strength and shatter index. It was demonstrated that the briquettes produced by the MTE process could survive handling and transportation. The dewatering of lignite during the MTE process strengthened the bond between particles, which enhanced the compressive strength of briquette. The presence of humic acid and functional groups, such as carboxyl and hydroxyl, enhanced the compressive strength of briquette by promoting the formation of hydrogen bonds between the surfaces of lignite particles. The combustion efficiencies and particle emission of lignite could be improved by the MTE briquetting process.

Abstract:Low-rank coal is rarely used in the industry of carbonized briquette due to its poor cohesiveness. In order to replace lump coal and utilize low-rank pulverized coal as much as possible in a carbonized briquette process, washing oil residue (WOR) was used as an enhanced binder to enhance the bonding strength of resulted carbonized briquette. The effects of blending ratio and carbonization temperatures on binding strength were investigated, and moreover, a reasonable bonding mechanism was deduced. The results showed that the best crushing strength was obtained when the weight ratio of WOR and low-rank coal is 3:7 at 800 °C, and its crushing strength of M25 (M25) can reach to 97%, while the thermoplastic properties of WOR is thought to be responsible for the obtained good crushing strength, where WOR can be softened and coated on the surface of coal particles during carbonization, and then a coal-binder interface can be formed, resulting in the loose inert coal particles can be combined and the strength of coke is improved significantly.

Abstract:This paper presents the partial results of a study on obtaining compacted fuel from fine-grained coal fractions and biomass. The aim of the study was to determine the impact of selected parameters of the extrusion process and the applied binder (mechanical durability and density of the products). The fuels were formulated using the extrusion process. Raw materials used in the research were: Fine-grained coal (flotation concentrates), biomass (hydrolytic lignocellulose), and a wide spectrum of organic and mineral binders and their compositions. During the investigations, the variable factors were the following: Extrusion pressure, preparation of the mixtures for extrusion (mixing time and temperature of the mixture), composition of the extruded mixtures (share of fine-grained coal and biomass and type of binder). It was found that it is possible to extrude mechanically durable briquettes from mixtures containing fine-grained coal products and biomass. Under the conditions of the experiment, the most favorable mechanical durability was characterized by briquettes containing in their composition 90% of coal and 6% of biomass (in relation to the dry state). The briquettes with the most favorable physico-mechanical properties were obtained using organic binders—Starch (based on wheat and potato starch) and cellulose derivatives.

Abstract:A test rig of dual fluidized beds with 3 m in height for coal multi-generation was built.A bubbling fluidized bed was for coal gasification and a circulating fluidized bed for char combustion. The two beds are combined with two pneumatic control valves:one valve to send high temperature ash from combustion bed to the gasification bed and another valve to send char and ash from gasification bed to combustion bed.Experiments on Shenhua bituminous,Longkou lignite and Datong bituminous were made,respectively.Carbon conversion efficiency is over 90%.Raising air/coal ratio leads to the increase of temperatures and gasification efficiencies.Tar yield of Shenhua bituminous reaches 1.5%. Longkou lignite has higher gasification efficiency,the calorific value of gas is 10.7 MJ/Nm~3 and the gasification efficiency is 48%.Calculation results show that main part of gas from Longkou lignite is by pyrolysis.

Abstract:There are abundant resources of low-rank coal powder in the world. Powder briquetting technology has opened up a new avenue for large-scale utilization of low-rank coal. Water repellency is of great importance for the storage and transportation of lignite briquettes. In this paper, different water repellents were investigated to improve the moisture and water resistance of briquettes. The results showed that the moisture-proof and waterproof effect of briquette with the silicone emulsion was better than other briquettes. After 132 h of moisture absorption experiment, the briquette with the silicone emulsion absorbed only 1.8 wt% of water finally and was less 4.7 wt% than the briquette without water repellent. After 24 h of water immersion experiment, the water absorption of briquette with the silicone emulsion reached 19.74%. The addition of water repellent improved the water immersion strength and re-drying water immersion strength, of which briquette with the silicone emulsion were 4.91 KN/piece and 9.37 KN/piece. The waterproof mechanism was explored by scanning electron microscopy and wettability. It was proved that the addition of silicone emulsion, polyurethane, and acrylic emulsion played a positive role in the waterproofing of lignite briquette.

Abstract:The abundant coal powder generated as a waste by-product during the lignite upgrading process is harmful to the environment. Lignite briquetting offers a practical solution for lignite usage. Altering the process parameters of briquetting can significantly improve briquette quality. In this paper, the characteristics of lignite briquettes, including drop strength and compressive strength were investigated. A combination of quadratic orthogonal rotation combination designs and regression equations established the best process parameters to be 40% weight of #2 upgraded coal, 20% weight of briquetting moisture, 25 MPa of briquetting pressure, and 12 h of drying time. The low error variance of the drop strength and compressive strength, at 0.01% and 1.83% respectively, verified the feasibility of the model. The analysis by scanning electron microscope (SEM) showed that the surface morphology of briquette was denser than that of raw coal. Finally, the combustion test of briquettes revealed that the particulate matter emission (PM2.5) of briquette was 16.7% lower than that of raw coal. In summary, these data provide a theoretical reference for realizing the reasonable utilization potential of waste products derived from industrial processes.

Abstract:The combustion behaviors and kinetic parameters of two parent coals (lignite and bituminous) and their blends were evaluated to meet specifications of power plants. Nonisothermogravimetric experiments were conducted in air atmosphere. The flow rate was set at 100 ml/min within the temperature range from ambient temperature to 1100 degrees C and heating rate at 20 degrees C/min. The particle size used in the experiment was smaller than 0.09 mm. The combustion performance of blended coals, such as the ignition temperature and maximum weight loss rate, can be improved by the co-combustion of the blends. Thermal analysis, burnout and combustibility index S of the coal samples were used to demonstrate the impact of blending ratio on the combustion characteristic of blended coals; results of blends displayed the nonadditive effect of the parent coals. Abstract:The coal partial gasification process produces a large number of chars.They have similar combustion characteristics to anthracite and can be utilized as a material manufacturing clean briquette to replace residential coal to achieve clean combustion.Moreover,the coal partial gasification produced more tar at relatively low temperature,which can be applied as naphtha or diesel after purification and hydrogenation.Herein,experiments of coal partial gasification coproducing char,tar,and gas are carried out on a bench-scale fluidized bed reactor during the temperature range of 625℃-762℃.The effect of equivalence ratio on the characteristics of coal partial gasification products is studied.The results show that the equivalence ratio increasing from 0.06 to 0.13 leads to a higher partial gasification temperature and lower char yield,and tar yield reaches a maximum value and the lower calorific value of gas reaches as high as 6.14 MJ/m 3 .When the gasification temperature is lower than 643℃,the increase in temperature promotes the generation of oxygen-containing functional groups and aromatic compounds in coal particles,and the microstructures of char become more disordered.The combustion stability of char is getting worse,whereas the pore structures in char become abundant at high temperatures.From the analysis of the tar chromatography column,it is observed that asphaltene and non-hydrocarbon account for 77%-88% of the total amount of tar.
Study on the Strength of Cold-Bonded High-Phosphorus Oolitic Hematite-Coal Composite Briquettes

Abstract:Composite briquettes containing high-phosphorus oolitic hematite and coal were produced with a twin-roller briquette machine using sodium carboxymethyl cellulose,molasses,starch,sodium silicate,and bentonite as binders.The effect of these binders on the strength of the composite briquettes,including cold strength and high-temperature strength,was investigated by drop testing and compression testing.It was found the addition of Ca（OH）2 and Na2CO3 not only improved the reduction of iron oxides and promoted dephosphorization during the reduction-separation process but also provided strength to the composite briquettes during the briquetting process; a compressive strength of 152.8 N per briquette was obtained when no binders were used.On this basis,the addition of molasses,sodium silicate,starch,and bentonite improved the cold strength of the composite briquettes,and a maximum compressive strength of 404.6 N per briquette was obtained by using starch.When subjected to a thermal treatment at 1200°C,all of the composite briquettes suffered from a sharp decrease in compressive strength during the initial reduction process.This decrease in strength was related to an increase in porosity of the composite briquettes.X-ray diffraction（XRD） and scanning electron microscopy（SEM） analyses showed that the decrease in strength of the composite briquettes could be caused by four factors: decomposition of bonding materials,gasification of coal,transportation of byproduct gases in the composite briquettes,and thermal stress.
Study on the Co-combustion Characteristics and Synergistic Effect of Semi-Coke and Dust Coal Produced from Biomass Briquette in Fluidized Bed Gasification

Abstract:Biomass briquette semi-coke (BFSC) is one of the byproducts of biomass gasification. It is difficult to reuse due to its inadequate carbonization, unsatisfactory pore structure, and surface properties. Co-combustion of BFSC with coal-fired boilers can be a cost-effective usage of biomass gasification semi-coke while also improving dust coal's combustion characteristics. However, research on the optimal blending ratio, co-combustion properties, and synergistic effects of BFSC and dust coal is lacking. This study conducted experimental and theoretical research on the co-combustion and reaction kinetic characteristics of BFSC and dust coal with a 0.3 MW pilot experimental system. The findings indicate that during co-combustion, sawdust semi-coke (SC), eucalyptus bark semi-coke (EBC), rice husk semi-coke (RHC), and corn straw semi-coke (CSC) exhibit favorable synergistic effects. At a 25 % blending ratio, the corresponding synergistic parameter indexes (SPIs) were 1.313, 1.053, 1.001, and 1.042. Adding EBC and SC may significantly promote the combustion of dust coal and make it enter the combustion stage sooner, improving combustion stability. When 25 % RHC or CSC is co-combusted, the activation energy predicted by the kinetic control equations is 17 kJ/mol and 5 kJ/mol lower than theoretical values, with a relative error of less than 3 %. The annual EBC output from a 1-ton biomass boiler may replace roughly 706 tons of normal coal, lowering CO2 emissions by approximately 634 tons and producing a direct economic gain of $33300. Therefore, BFSC is a low-carbon and low-cost coal boiler fuel with great potential for large-scale industrial applications.

Abstract:The mechanism of ash formation during coal gasification is very important for the safety and stability of gasifier operation. This study comparatively investigated the ash formation behaviors during the gasification of coal water slurry and dry pulverized coal. Shenmu coal was gasified in a CO2 atmosphere at 900 degrees C using a fixed-bed reactor to prepare chars and ashes. Computer-controlled scanning electron microscopy was employed to characterize the compositions and particle sizes of minerals in the raw coal, coal water slurry gasification ash, and dry pulverized coal gasification ash. Morphological characteristics reveal that, during gasification, coal water slurry gasification char exhibits obvious agglomeration compared to the dry pulverized coal gasification char. The changes of mineral compositions indicate that, during both coal water slurry and dry pulverized coal gasification, minerals follow nearly identical transformation pathways, but the degrees of transformation are different. The influence of char agglomeration on heat transfer may be the reason for the less transformation of K Al-silicate and kaolinite during the coal water slurry gasification. Furthermore, in comparison to dry pulverized coal gasification, more Ca in calcite and S in pyrite transfer into gypsum during the coal water slurry gasification. The results from thermodynamic equilibrium calculations indirectly suggest that this may be attributed to the limited internal diffusion of CO2 within coal water slurry gasification char resulting from char agglomeration during gasification. Overall particle size distributions of minerals in raw coal, coal water slurry gasification ash, and dry pulverized coal gasification ash demonstrate that the degrees of mineral fragmentation are almost consistent during both coal water slurry and dry pulverized coal gasification. However, differences in the degrees of mineral transformation led to different particle size distributions of various minerals between coal water slurry gasification ash and dry pulverized coal gasification ash. This study mainly focuses on the influence of water in coal water slurry on ash formation, and it has not considered the influence of other factors, such as ash content, hydrophilicity, caking property, and gasification reactivity of coal, which need further research to explore.
