Abstract:A series of Li4SiO4 was synthesized using LiNO3 and six different silicon precursors. The precipitated-silica-derived Li4SiO4 presented the highest CO2 capacity in a 10 h sorption test, and ZSM-5-derived Li4SiO4 demonstrated the most rapid CO2 sorption. The CO2 sorption kinetics predominantly followed the nucleation mode and could be accurately described by the Avrami-Erofeev model. The Avrami-Erofeev model provided an in-depth analysis of correlation between sorption performance and material properties. Both the nucleation speed and nucleation dimensionality affected the overall sorption kinetics. The kinetics and pore-size distribution suggest that the sorption kinetics was dependent on the quantity of ∼4 nm-pores which favors nucleation dimensionality. For the cyclic tests, the precipitated-silica-derived sample presented the poorest performance with the capacity decreasing from 31.33 wt% at the 1st cycle to only 11.52 wt% at the 30th cycle. However, the sample made from fumed silica displayed an opposite trend with the capacity increasing from 19.90 wt% at the 1st cycle to 34.23 wt% at the 30th cycle. The radically distinct behaviour of samples during cycles was on account of the alternation of sorption kinetics. The decrease in ∼4 nm-pores after cycles was responsible for the decrease of nucleation dimensionality for the precipitated-silica-derived sample. The rearrangement during cycles could enrich the pores of ∼4 nm for the fumed silica-derived sample, which improved the nucleation growth, thus enhancing the kinetics with cycles.
CO2 capture properties of lithium silicates with different ratios of Li2O/SiO2: an ab initio thermodynamic and experimental approach

Abstract:The lithium silicates have attracted scientific interest due to their potential use as high-temperature sorbents for CO2 capture. The electronic properties and thermodynamic stabilities of lithium silicates with different Li2O/SiO2 ratios (Li2O, Li8SiO6, Li4SiO4, Li6Si2O7, Li2SiO3, Li2Si2O5, Li2Si3O7, and α-SiO2) have been investigated by combining first-principles density functional theory with lattice phonon dynamics. All these lithium silicates examined are insulators with band-gaps larger than 4.5 eV. By decreasing the Li2O/SiO2 ratio, the first valence bandwidth of the corresponding lithium silicate increases. Additionally, by decreasing the Li2O/SiO2 ratio, the vibrational frequencies of the corresponding lithium silicates shift to higher frequencies. Based on the calculated energetic information, their CO2 absorption capabilities were extensively analyzed through thermodynamic investigations on these absorption reactions. We found that by increasing the Li2O/SiO2 ratio when going from Li2Si3O7 to Li8SiO6, the corresponding lithium silicates have higher CO2 capture capacity, higher turnover temperatures and heats of reaction, and require higher energy inputs for regeneration. Based on our experimentally measured isotherms of the CO2 chemisorption by lithium silicates, we found that the CO2 capture reactions are two-stage processes: (1) a superficial reaction to form the external shell composed of Li2CO3 and a metal oxide or lithium silicate secondary phase and (2) lithium diffusion from bulk to the surface with a simultaneous diffusion of CO2 into the shell to continue the CO2 chemisorption process. The second stage is the rate determining step for the capture process. By changing the mixing ratio of Li2O and SiO2, we can obtain different lithium silicate solids which exhibit different thermodynamic behaviors. Based on our results, three mixing scenarios are discussed to provide general guidelines for designing new CO2 sorbents to fit practical needs.

Abstract:Direct air capture (DAC) of CO2 represents one of the most promising technologies to achieve negative carbon emissions. Herein, the superbase ionic liquids (ILs)-modified carbon substrates were developed towards DAC of CO2 by harnessing the strong CO2 binding capability of IL and the ordered porous channels provided by the carbon supports. Detailed porosity analysis revealed that the IL with aromatic cation and oxygenate anion preferred to fill the micropores, and a thin layer was created on the surface of the mesopores. Strong π-π interaction between the IL layer and the carbon surface was disclosed by wide-angle X-ray scattering (WAXS) analysis, leading to enhanced thermal stability of the IL phase. With the same lL coating amount, the DAC of CO2 evaluation revealed that larger mesopore size and pore volume in the carbon/IL composite materials led to higher CO2 uptake capacity by exposing more active sites to integrate CO2 from diluted sources. The thermodynamic analysis confirmed the critical role of IL coating in providing strong chemisorption sites and significantly improved selectivity to enrich the diluted CO2 from the air atmosphere. This work provides guidance on leveraging the scaffolds' surface properties and porosities of the scaffolds to tune the DAC of CO2 behaviour.

Abstract:The engineering and tailoring of porous materials to realize the precise discrimination of CO2 and C2H2, with almost identical kinetic diameters, is a challenging task. We herein report the first example of the kinetic-sieving of relatively larger molecule of C2H2 from CO2 by a novel sulfonic anion-pillared hybrid ultramicroporous materials of ZU-610a. Specifically, ZU-610 constructed from copper(II), isonicotinic acid and 1,2-ethanedisulfonic acid is synthesized and shows the preferential affinity for C2H2 over CO2. After the post-synthetic heat treatment of ZU-610, ZU-610a with a contracted aperture is obtained. Interestingly, the C2H2-selctive ZU-610 was reversed to the CO2-selective ZU-610a. High purity C2H2 (>99.5 %) could be directly obtained from the dynamic breakthrough experiments on an equimolar C2H2/CO2 mixture at 298 K. This study provides guidance for the design of adsorbents aimed at separation systems with similar kinetic diameter.

Abstract:MgO-based mixture is a promising candidate for CO2 capture due to its high theoritical capture capacity, noncorrosiveness, low cost and wide availability. In this work, the effects of preparation methods and sorption conditions on the characteristics of MgO-Na2CO3 are studied. A stable MgO conversion of 0.32 for CO2 sorption is obtained during the 30-cycle tests at 400 degrees C, 2 MPa, where the material exhibits a strong skeleton structure with increased specific surface area when prepared by the ball-milling method. A severe sorption condition of 500 degrees C, 3 MPa is also tested, where the material shows a stable MgO conversion of 0.3 after 20 cycles. With the increase of Na2CO3 content in the mixture, a higher MgO conversion can be achieved, but the cyclic stability will be impaired. In addition to the experiments, density function theory calculations are conducted to explore the sorption mechanism of MgO-Na2CO3, where CO2 adsorptions on the pure, the Na-doped, and the Na2CO3-MgO co-adsorption surfaces are compared. The defect is found to help induce electrons from the Na and Mg atoms to the CO2 molecule, thus benefiting the CO2 adsorption process. The presence of Na2CO3 also benefits the adsorption process of MgO due to its electrostatic interaction with CO2 molecules. This work can serve as the guideline for the design of MgO-based CO2 absorbent especially for extreme operating conditions.
Evaluation of the formation and carbon dioxide capture by Li4SiO4 using in situ synchrotron powder X-ray diffraction studies

Abstract:Carbon capture and storage using regenerable sorbents are an effective approach to reduce CO2 emissions from stationary sources. In this work, lithium orthosilicate (Li4SiO4) was studied as a carbon dioxide sorbent. For a deeper understanding of the synthesis and carbonation mechanism of Li4SiO4, an in situ synchrotron radiation powder X-ray diffraction technique was used. The Li4SiO4 powders were synthesized by a combination of ball milling of a Li2CO3 and SiO2 mixture followed by a thermal treatment process at low temperature. In situ studies showed that formation of Li4SiO4 from the as-milled 2Li2CO3-SiO2 mixture involves decomposition of Li2CO3 by reaction with SiO2via Li2SiO3 as an intermediate compound. No evidence of Li2Si2O5 formation was obtained, in spite of thermodynamic predictions. The CO2 capture by Li4SiO4 was evaluated dynamically over a wide temperature range, reaching a maximum weight increase of 34 wt% and good cyclability after about 10 cycles. By thermogravimetric and microstructural analyses in combination with ex situ and in situ measurements, a two step carbonation mechanism and its influence on the final CO2 capture was clearly elucidated. Under dynamical conditions up to 700 °C, the lower number of Li2CO3 nuclei initially formed retards the double shell formation and the nucleation and growth of the Li2CO3 particles remains the controlling step up to higher CO2 capture capacity. Isothermal carbonation at 700 °C favours the formation of a higher number of Li2CO3 nuclei that creates a thin carbonate shell. The CO2 diffusion through this shell is the limiting step from the beginning and further carbonation is hindered as the reaction progresses.
Synthesis and Adsorption Process of Lithium Taking Used as High-Temperature CO2 Sorbents

Abstract:One of the high-temperature CO2 sorbents lithium orthosilicates (Li4SiO4) was synthesized by using sol-gel method. The structures and the adsorption properties of Li4SiO4 were investigated by XRD, temperature-programming tests, and isothermal tests. In-situ FTIR tests were carried out to analyze the adsorption species and procedure. The results show that high purity (more than 90%) monoclinic Li4SiO4 could be obtained by adding citric acid into the LiNO3-TEOs-Ethanol co-hydrolysis system. Such a Li4SiO4 material shows good CO2 adsorption performance in the atmosphere of 2% CO2 in He within the temperature range of 450—500℃. The major adsorption species on the surfaces of the samples are bicarbonates at lower adsorption temperature, and are ion-type carbonates and horizontal-type carbonates at higher temperature.

Abstract:High-temperature CO2 adsorption has an attractive prospect in reducing CO2 emissions efficiently. As the core of CO2 adsorption technology, sorbents suffer from a well-known problem of capacity degradation as a result of sintering during cyclic CO2 adsorption and desorption at high temperatures. This work aims to understand the microstructural evolution of Li4SiO4, one of the most typical and promising sorbents, during CO2 capture. In-situ Transmission Electron Microscopy was used to directly capture the morphological variation of Li4SiO4 sorbents. Comprehensive characterization techniques were adopted to quantify microstructural parameters of Li4SiO4 under different conditions. The real-time shrinkage of Li4SiO4 particles was demonstrated and equations on grain growth, specific surface area reduction, and pore volume evolution were established. The work can not only reveal the reason for the reduction of CO2 capacity, but provide a theoretical guidance for the development of sintering-resistant CO2 sorbents.

Abstract:The Li4SiO4-based sorbent, noted for its high sorption capacity and lower regeneration temperature, is promising for high-temperature CO2 capture. However, its slower sorption rate and poor cycle stability limit practical applications. In this study, Li4SiO4 was synthesized with various Li/Si molar ratios to serve as CO2 sorbents. The synthesis employed the mechanochemical activation method, effectively addressing challenges like growth, agglomeration, and structural degradation that typically occur during the CO2 sorption process. The results indicate that a smaller Li/Si molar ratio significantly enhances both the kinetic sorption rate and cyclic stability of the Li4SiO4 sorbent. When the Li/Si molar ratios are 6.2, 4.2, and 3.2 respectively, the maximum adsorption capacities of the three corresponding sorbents are 0.39, 0.36, and 0.29 gCO2/gadsorbent, respectively. At a temperature of 700 °C, the times required for the sorbents to achieve adsorption equilibrium were 15 min, 2 min, and 1.6 min, respectively. Additionally, after 20 adsorption/desorption cycles, the corresponding retention rates of adsorption capacity were 29.4 %, 62.8 %, and 93.9 %, respectively. These results demonstrate the excellent CO2 sorption performance and the significant potential for wide application of this novel Li4SiO4-based high-temperature CO2 sorbent.

Abstract:Abstract The study investigates the combustion-assisted synthesis of lithium orthosilicate (Li 4 SiO 4 ) powders for potential CO 2 capture applications. Technical-grade lithium carbonate and metallic silicon powders were used as starting materials. Synthesis conditions were explored across temperatures ranging from 500 to 900 °C and different holding durations. Thermodynamic modeling using FactSage 8.2 software suggested that Li 4 SiO 4 production is feasible at temperatures of 700 °C and higher with metallic silicon as the silicon source, which was confirmed experimentally. Characterization of the synthesized powders involved X-ray diffraction, specific surface area determination, particle size distribution analysis, scanning electron microscopy, and CO 2 uptake tests. Despite having the lowest Li 4 SiO 4 content as 83.7%, the sample synthesized at 700 °C with 45 min of holding time showed the best CO 2 uptake performance as 12.80 wt% while having the lowest crystallite size value (126.58 nm), the highest specific surface area value (4.975 m 2 /g) and the lowest average particle size value (10.85 μm) which are highly effective on the CO 2 uptake performance of such solid sorbents. The study concludes that while challenges remain in achieving optimal CO 2 capture performance, it lays a foundation for utilizing lithium orthosilicate in carbon capture applications. Abstract:Lithium orthosilicate (Li4SiO4) represents a potential class of high-temperature sorbents for CO2 capture in power plants and sorption enhanced methane reforming to produce H2. However, conventional wisdom suggests that pure Li4SiO4 should have extremely slow sorption kinetics at realistic low CO2 concentrations. Here, we report the opposite result: using a simple and cost-effective glucose-based mild combustion procedure, an unusually efficient and pure form of Li4SiO4 (MC-0.6) was synthesized to achieve a maximum uptake capacity of 35.0 wt% at 580 °C for CO2 concentrations under 15 vol% and maintained this capacity over multiple cycles. The characterization results showed that highly porous nano-agglomerate-like (50–100 nm) morphologies were apparent and ensured a rapid surface-sorption of CO2. In this process, a macroporous nano-sized Li2SiO3 cover on the melt layer of Li2CO3 was identified for the first time. This special structure appeared to accelerate the transportation of CO2 and the diffusion of Li+ and O2− through a molten layer enhancing contact with CO2. Thus, the sample MC-0.6 reduced both the surface-sorption and diffusion kinetics dependence on low CO2 concentrations. Rather than use traditional approaches (controlled morphologies combined with doping), we have demonstrated that the slow kinetics can be overcome simply by a controlled morphologies strategy, which opens up a new direction for the synthesis of high-performance Li4SiO4 sorbents.

Abstract:Lithium silicate (Li4SiO4), an efficient CO2 high-temperature sorbent, has become the research hotspot in CO2 capture due to its large theoretical adsorption capacity and fast rate. How to further reduce production cost while ensuring the adsorption performance has become the key to industrial application. In this work, using Al, Fe, Ti co-doped SiO2 aerogel synthesized from fly ash as silicon source, Li4SiO4 sorbents were achieved through solid-state calcination method. The influences of preparing conditions on the microstructure and CO2 capture property were systematically investigated. Under the optimum conditions, the as-prepared Li4SiO4 demonstrated the best CO2 adsorption capacity of 33.24 wt% within 7.0 min. Particularly, the CO2 capture capacity remained 23.38 wt% (>70% of the first value) after 35 cycles, indicative of long cycle stability. Moreover, the kinetic characteristics of CO2 adsorption process could be well simulated by the double exponential model, and the diffusion process of Li+/O2− ions was the decisive step of the whole adsorption reaction. Compared with Li4SiO4 by pure reagents, the sorbent from fly ash-based aerogel exhibited competitive adsorption capacity, which provides a new cost-effective way to synthesize CO2 high-temperature sorbent with super capture performance and good cycle stability.

Abstract:Carbon capture, utilization and storage (CCUS) is widely acknowledged as an essential route to mitigate CO2 emissions into atmosphere. Li4SiO4 as a sort of high-temperature CO2 sorbent has great potentials in CCUS applications, as well as being integrated with other high value-added processes like the integrated CO2 capture and utilization (ICCU). This review critically discusses the state-of-the-art researches on the CO2 capture by Li4SiO4 from the fundamental aspects of thermodynamic equilibrium, reaction mechanisms and kinetics, sorbent modifications, to potential applications. Difference between theoretical and practical CO2 adsorption/desorption equilibrium is emphasized, product layer distribution features and adsorption/desorption mechanisms are discussed, typical kinetic models and their applications in CO2 adsorption and desorption by Li4SiO4 are analyzed, and recent advances in high-efficient Li4SiO4-based sorbents are summarized. We hope this review can stimulate future studies on understanding the basic features and mechanism of CO2 capture process, developing low-cost and scalable sorbent manufacturing method, and establishing more integrated and effective systems for the high-value disposal of CO2.

Abstract:Lithium-based sorbents are considered as promising candidates for post-combustion carbon capture because of their superior stability compared to CaO. In the present study, Li 4 SiO 4 powders were synthesized by Solution Combustion Synthesis (SCS) technique using LiNO 3 as lithium source, TEOS as silicon source and citric acid as the fuel. CO 2 sorption tests were carried out for the synthesized samples and, powder prepared at 650°C during 4 h, which has 17 μm of particle size, 5.2 m 2 g −1 of specific surface area, 85.2% Li 4 SiO 4 phase purity with 97 nm of crystallite size showed a sorption performance as 29.5 wt% CO 2 uptake value, in thermobalance test under 92 vol% CO 2 (N 2 balance) gas concentration at 600°C. The sample had a CO 2 uptake value of 21.4 wt% under 20 vol% CO 2 concentration which was chosen to simulate industrial off-gas conditions. Also, the same sample showed a good cyclic durability during the sorption/desorption tests. The sample maintained its cyclic CO 2 uptake capability range between 21 and 24 wt% for 15 cycles.

Experiment And Modeling Of Co(2) Capture From Flue Gases In A Fluidized Bed With Limestone And Dolomite Sorbents

Abstract:Experiments of CO(2) capture characteristics at high temperature were investigated in a fluidized-bed reactor with limestone and dolomite sorbents. Mathematical models of multiple cycles for CO(2) capture and sorbent calcination in fluidized bed reactor are developed and validated through comparing simulated results with experimental data. The model results qualitatively agree with experimental data. The experimental and simulated results indicated that the operation time of high efficient CO(2) capture declines continuously with the increasing of cyclic number due to the sorbent activity loss, the final CO(2) capture efficency will remain nearly constant, due to sorbent already reaching the final residual capture capacity.. After CO(2) capture step, the Ca-based sorbents are needed to be regenerated to be used for subsequent cycle, and the multiple calcination processes of Ca-based sorbent are studied and discussed.

Abstract:Calcium-looping technology has been identified as one of the most favorable CO2 capture techniques for the implementation of carbon capture, utilization, and storage (CCUS); however, the rapid deactivation of CaO sorbents due to sintering is currently a major barrier of this technology. We report for the first time an environmentally benign and cost-effective strategy to reduce sintering by adding waste-derived nanosilica, synthesized from photovoltaic waste (SiCl4), into Cao-based sorbents through a simple dry mixing procedure. The as-synthesized sorbent (90% CaCO3-W) resulted in final CO2 uptake of 0.32 g(CO2) g(CaO)(-1) within 5 min of carbonation. Even under the most severe calcination conditions (at 920 degrees C in pure CO2), it still maintained a stable capture capacity, with CO2 uptake of 0.23 g(CO2) g(CaO)(-1) after 30 cycles. Additionally, the CO2 uptake percentage reached similar to 90% in the fast carbonation stage (similar to 20 s), which is of great significance for real applications. The most likely stabilization mechanism was considered on the basis of N-2 physisorption isotherms and X-ray diffraction patterns. It was concluded that stable and refractory larnite (Ca2SiO4) particles were formed during 2-h thermal pretreatment at 900 degrees C, leading to sintering resistance. This strategy significantly enhanced the cyclic stability and carbonation rate of CaO-based sorbents through the reuse of SiCl4 and is thus a green technology for scaled-up fast CO2 capture.
Structurally improved Li4SiO4 sorbents derived from lithium salicylate precursor for enhanced CO2 capture

Abstract:Li4SiO4 sorbents have exhibited promising prospects for high-temperature CO2 capture. However, conventional Li4SiO4 using solid-state reaction method usually exhibits dense structures with barren porosity, limiting the CO2 sorption. To solve this problem, a sol-mixing method using organometallic lithium precursors was employed to produce ‘new’ Li4SiO4 sorbents with improved CO2 sorption performance. The obtained Li4SiO4 from lithium salicylate precursor exhibited enhanced specific surface area and modified micromorphology compared to the conventional Li4SiO4. The morphology showed that the ‘new’ Li4SiO4 possessed many fluff-like folds on the surface, in comparison with the smooth surfaces of conventional sorbent. As a result, the ‘new’ sorbent exhibited CO2 uptake of ~0.15 g/g, which is more than three times as high as that of the conventional one. Furthermore, the CO2 uptake was further enhanced to 0.32 g/g by K2CO3 doping. After granulation, the pellets also presented good CO2 sorption performance as well as excellent mechanical strength for practical applications. Generally, the good sorption performance and excellent mechanical strength demonstrated the effectiveness of sol-mixing method and lithium salicylate as precursors for the production of efficient Li4SiO4 sorbents.

Abstract:Abstract In this work, the potential of monohydrate Lithium hydroxide (LiOH) as a high capacity adsorbent for CO 2 capture was investigated experimentally and theoretically. The effects of operating parameters, including temperature, pressure, LiOH particle size and LiOH loading, on the CO 2 capture in a fixed-bed reactor have been experimentally explored using response surface methodology (RSM) based on central composite design. The optimum conditions obtained by the RSM for temperature, pressure, mesh and maximum adsorption capacity were calculated as 333 K, 4.72 bar, 200 micron and 559.39 mg/g, respectively. The experiments were evaluated using isotherm, kinetic and thermodynamic modeling. Isotherm modeling showed that Hill model could deliver a perfect fit to the experimental data, based on the closeness of the R 2 -value to unity. The kinetics models showed that the process was chemical adsorption and obeyed the second order model. In addition, thermodynamic analysis results showed that the CO 2 adsorption was spontaneous and exothermic in nature. In addition, based on the density functional theory, we investigated the chemical stability of LiOH atomic clusters and examined the effects of LiOH nanonization on the physical attraction of carbon dioxide.
Effect of K2CO3 doping on CO2 sorption performance of silicate lithium-based sorbent prepared from citric acid treated sediment

Abstract:In this paper, a low-cost and environmental-friendly leaching agent citric acid (C6H8O7) was used to treat the sediment of Dianchi Lake (SDL) to synthesize lithium silicate (Li4SiO4) based CO2 sorbent. The results were compared with that treated with strong acid. Moreover, the effects of preparation conditions, sorption conditions and desorption conditions on the CO2 sorption performance of prepared Li4SiO4 were systematically studied. Under optimal conditions, the Li4SiO4 sorbent was successfully synthesized and its CO2 sorption capacity reached 31.37% (mass), which is much higher than that synthesized from SDL treated with strong acid. It is speculated that the presence of some elements after C6H8O7 treatment may promote the sorption of synthetic Li4SiO4 to CO2. In addition, after doping with K2CO3, the CO2 uptake increases from the original 12.02% and 22.12% to 23.96% and 32.41% (mass) under the 20% and 50% CO2 partial pressure, respectively. More importantly, after doping K2CO3, the synthesized Li4SiO4 has a high cyclic stability under the low CO2 partial pressure.

Abstract:Lithium oxosilicate was synthesized via the solid-state method using Li2O and SiO2 as starting reactants. In situ synchrotron powder X-ray diffraction (SPRXD) coupled with Rietveld refinement allowed describing the synthesis as a two-step process where Li2O and SiO2 react to form Li4SiO4 and, at higher temperatures, lithium orthosilicate reacts with the remaining Li2O to form Li8SiO6. Time-resolved measurements allowed determining the temperatures at which each phase transformation occurs as well as the time required to complete the synthesis. The CO2 capture properties of Li8SiO6 in the temperature range from room temperature to 770 °C were studied in detail by time-resolved in situ SPXRD. The crystallographic phases present during Li8SiO6 carbonation were identified and quantified via Rietveld analysis. Results showed that, within the temperature range from 200 to 690 °C, Li8SiO6 carbonation produces Li4SiO4 and Li2CO3, while, at temperatures from 690 to 750 °C, a secondary reaction occurs, where previously formed Li4SiO4 reacts with CO2, producing Li2SiO3 and Li2CO3. These findings allowed proposing a mechanism of reaction for Li8SiO6 carbonation in the temperature range that is of interest for high temperature solid-state sorbents.
