Abstract:A wideband wavelength-tunable 4 x 5 distributed feedback (DFB) semiconductor laser array based on the reconstructionequivalent-chirp (REC) technique using a simple tuning scheme is demonstrated. It consists of 20 DFB lasers with 4 x 5 matrix interleaving distributions, two-level cascaded Y-branch optical combiners, and one active semiconductor optical amplifier (SOA), all in-series integrated on one chip. Unlike the traditional thermal-electric cooler (TEC)-based wavelength-tuning scheme, the tunable 4 x 5 REC-DFB laser array achieves a faster and broader continuous wavelength-tuning range using TaN thin-film heaters integrated on the AlN submount. By changing the injection current of the TaN resistor from 0 to 190 mA, the proposed tunable laser achieves a wavelength-tuning range of similar to 2.5 nm per channel and a total tuning of over 50 nm. This study opens up new avenues for realizing cost-effective and wide-tuning-range semiconductor lasers.

Abstract:A wideband fast-sweeping tunable laser array has been designed and fabricated based on reconstruction-equivalent-chirp (REC) technique. The total continuous wavelength tuning range of the multiwavelength laser array is greater than 48 nm with a sweep speed of 5 kHz. By continuous measuring of a fiber Bragg grating (FBG) utilizing the wavelength-swept DFB laser array, it shows a maximum wavelength deviation of less than 2 pm, demonstrating a good wavelength sweeping repeatability.

Abstract:A compact and electric tuning microwave source based on a diode-pumped composite Nd:YAG-LiNbO(3) cavity microchip laser is demonstrated. The electro-optical element introduces an electric tuning intra-cavity birefringence which causes a tunable frequency difference between two spilt orthogonal polarization states of a longitude mode. Thus a continuously tunable microwave signal with frequency up to 14.12 GHz can be easily generated by beating the two polarization modes on a high speed photodetector.

Abstract:In this study, a tunable in-series multi-wavelength distributed feedback laser array (DFB-MLA) based on reconstruction-equivalent-chirp (REC) technique with simple wavelength tuning scheme is presented and experimentally demonstrated. Unlike traditional DFB laser tuned by thermal-electric cooler (TEC), the proposed laser tuned by injection current can realize faster wavelength-tuning and reduce TEC power consumption. By comparing the thermal influence of different structures of heatsink blocks, several optimized block structures are selected for appropriate thermal conductivity and controllable heat dissipation, resulting in a broad and continuous wavelength tuning range. The proposed in-series DFB-MLA on optimized heatsink achieves better tuning performance with a wavelength tuning range of ~2.4 nm per channel from 40 to 120 mA and stable output power of over 20 mW compared to the laser mounted on the standard heatsink block with the tuning range of 1.4 nm per channel. Furthermore, the tunable laser keeps good single-mode stability, with a side mode suppressing ratio (SMSR) of over 40 dB. Thus, this study provides a new perspective for designing a low-cost continuous tunable semiconductor laser with a simple tuning mechanism in the future.

Abstract:A low cost tunable laser module based on distributed-feedback (DFB)laser matrix is achieved by recon-struction-equivalent-chirp (REC)technology.Wavelength tuning,stability and other performance tests are applied, and the parameters of specific wavelength are calibrated.The wavelength spacing between adjacent lasers in the mod-ule is uniform,and the P-I diagrams are good.The output light of this tunable laser has a wavelength fluctuation with-in ±3 pm and a power fluctuation less than 0.02 dBm.The wavelength-tuning range is 1 536.64 ~1 559.36 nm, which can covers 60 specific wavelength channels according to ITU-T DWDM standard,and the channel-switching time is 5 ~30 s.

Abstract:A wide-band fast-sweeping tunable laser array has been designed and fabricated. Sixteen lasers are densely integrated with a 4-by-4 matrix laser array. The wavelength of each channel in the array deviates from the design wavelength by within ±0.2 nm, owing to the high wavelength control accuracy of the reconstruction-equivalent-chirp (REC) technique. By periodically on-off switching and current-sweeping of the distributed feedback (DFB) lasers, the continuous wavelength tuning range can be greater than 38 nm with a sweeping period of 10.7 ms.

Abstract:Widely tunable semiconductor lasers based on a novel half-wave coupler are presented. They have been implemented in the form of half-wave coupled V-cavity and ring-FP cavities. By using the novel half-wave coupler, single-mode lasing with high side-mode-suppression-ratio is achieved. Single-electrode controlled wide-band wavelength tuning with Vernier effect is demonstrated. The full-band tuning of 50 channels with 100GHz spacing is realized by further employing temperature induced gain spectrum shift. The laser is packaged into a small-form-factor 9-pin box TOSA, and the electronic driver has been developed for the wavelength tuning and direct modulation. The advantages of compactness, fabrication simplicity, easy wavelength control and direct modulation allow the tunable lasers to be used in low-cost access and datacenter networks, as well as in portable devices for spectroscopic analysis.

Abstract:In recent years, the 2 µm waveband has been gaining significant attention due to its potential in the realization of several key technologies, specifically, future long-haul optical communications near the 1.9 µm wavelength region. In this work, we present a hybrid silicon photonic wavelength-tunable diode laser with an operating range of 1881-1947 nm (66 nm) for the first time, providing good compatibility with the hollow-core photonic bandgap fiber and thulium-doped fiber amplifier. Room-temperature continuous-wave operation was achieved with a favorable on-chip output power of 28 mW. Stable single-mode lasing was observed with side-mode suppression ratio up to 35 dB. Besides the abovementioned potential applications, the demonstrated wavelength region will find critical purpose in H2O spectroscopic sensing, optical logic, signal processing as well as enabling the strong optical Kerr effect on Si.

Abstract:To reduce the cost of wavelength tunable lasers, the structure and fabrication methods of a wavelength tunable laser based on distributed reflectors with deep-submicron slots are proposed. By using a pillar reversing technique, the device is fabricated with standard UV lithography. The features and benefits of reflectors with deep-submicron slots are simulated and explained. As high as 47dB side mode suppression ratio and 50nm tuning range around 1550nm is achieved.

Abstract:A widely wavelength tunable semiconductor laser based on two cascaded half-wave-coupled rectangular ring resonators is demonstrated. Vernier effect between two rectangular rings with perimeter of 281 and 305 mu m is employed to enlarge the tuning range. Simple fabrication process is used with all active waveguides. No epitaxial regrowth, grating, or high-resolution lithography is needed. By adjusting the injection currents applied to the cascaded rectangular rings synchronously, wavelength tuning of 35 channels with 100 GHz spacing is achieved with side mode suppression ratio up to 40.5 dB.

Abstract:The ongoing growth of data traffic from existing and new latency-sensitive applications poses a challenge to the data center network. Wavelength-routed optical circuit switching promises high bandwidth, low power and latency networking for data centers, but requires a wideband wavelength tunable source capable of nanosecond-scale hitless wavelength switching at every node. A tunable source based on DFB laser arrays is a potential candidate due to the high-speed dynamic property and high single-longitudinal-mode (SLM) stability of the DFB laser. However, the large-scale integration of the DFB laser and the high precision control of the lasing wavelength are still problems. In this work, we proposed and fabricated a monolithic integrated 16-channel DFB laser array with high SLM stability and 100-GHz channel spacing by using the reconstruction-equivalent-chirp (REC) technique. The maximum output power of each channel was above 6 mW. Based on the custom-designed fast switching drive board with a field-programmable gate array (FPGA), the switch-ON and OFF time between any pair of channel combinations were measured at less than 10 ns. Dynamic switching wavelengths remained stable and resided within the receiver bandwidth. Wavelength switching experiments for modulated light signals were done by driving the external modulator, achieving bit error performance at 1 x 10(-9) for 10 Gb/s NRZ data.

Abstract:We demonstrate a broadband tunable ultra-narrow linewidth single-frequency (SF) Yb-doped fiber laser (YDFL). A dual ring subcavity (DRS) as a filtering component to eliminate the dense longitudinal mode inherent in YDFL and theoretically analyzed its filtering characteristics. By inserting a 0.8 m unpumped polarization-maintaining Yb-doped fiber in the Sagnac ring, a dynamic narrowband grating (DNG) based on the saturable absorption (SA) effect is constructed to ensure SF laser output over the entire wavelength tuning range. We achieve a wide wavelength tunable SF laser output in the range of ∼74 nm, covering 1021.06 nm to 1094.98 nm. The laser has an optical signal-to-noise ratio (OSNR) of more than 62.5 dB, a slope efficiency of 3.57 %, and an ultra-narrow linewidth of 622 Hz over the entire tunable range. In addition, the stability of the wavelength and power fluctuations below 0.018 nm and 0.67 dB, respectively. This tunable SF fiber laser has a compact structure, lower cost, and excellent performance, and is expected to be used in the fields of coherent communications, precision metrology, and so on.

Multi-channel Wavelength-Swept DFB Laser Array Based on REC Technique

Abstract:Wavelength-swept laser is one of the most critical common components of fiber Bragg grating (FBG) sensors. However, a fast, stable, integrated and low-cost multi-channel wavelength-swept laser array is still unavailable. In this article, a multi-channel simultaneous wavelength-swept DFB laser array based on the reconstruction-equivalent-chirp (REC) technique is proposed and manufactured. The REC technology simplifies the fabrication process and greatly reduces the cost of the laser. The laser array contains 4 lasers in parallel with integrated heating resistance for thermal tuning to broaden the wavelength-tuning range. Each single-wavelength DFB laser introduces a π-phase shift structure, which is used to improve the single-mode performance of the laser. Meanwhile, the active multiplexer responsible for coupling and an optical amplifier (SOA) responsible for compensating the coupling loss of the laser are also integrated on the same chip. The driving circuits of the laser use FPGA to control the DAC chip to obtain precise current output and realizes continuous linear output of wavelength by changing the injection current size. The packaged laser module can realize a continuous wavelength-swept range of 2.4 nm per channel with the SMSR over 40 dB, achieving a simultaneous sweep of four channels with good scanning linearity and scanning speed. The work of this paper realizes the integration of linear wavelength-swept light sources, which creates the conditions for a low-cost, small-volume multi-channel sensing system in the future.

Abstract:Fast optical switches have the potential of lowering the cost, power, and latency of today’s data-center networks. The on-off switching of DFB lasers in arrays is poised to provide extremely fast switching because the on-off time of a DFB laser is the level of sub-nanosecond. However, the key of the DFB laser array based tunable laser lies in the high precision control of the lasing wavelength. In this letter, we proposed and experimentally demonstrated a tunable laser by integrating 16 DFB lasers based on the reconstruction-equivalent-chirp (REC) technique. Without using the conventional e-beam lithography, an equivalent $\lambda $ /4 phase-shift is fabricated in each DFB laser to ensure the single-longitudinal-mode (SLM) yield. Moreover, high precise wavelength spacing is realized. Wavelength deviations of 89.3% DFB lasers are within ±0.2 nm. The output power of all the channels is above 7 mW, and the relative intensity noise is below −130 dB/Hz. By on-off switching the lasers, sixteen channels with 2.4-nm spacing can be fast switched. The switching time between any two channels is less than 50 ns. In addition, a wide-band continuous wavelength tuning range of 38.4 nm can be obtained with a small temperature variation of 18 °C. Owing to the REC technique, the tunable laser via high-density integration of DFB lasers is demonstrated with simple fabrication, high SLM yield, and high wavelength precision, which opens up a path for wide-band and especially fast tunable lasers.

Abstract:<p>Widely tunable distributed feedback (DFB) lasers based on surface isolation grooves were developed using i-line lithography. Periodic p-electrodes on mesas enabled the realization of a great tunability. It is to be mentioned that, our device reached a wavelength tuning range of approximately 17.5 nm by only one pair of electrodes under both temperature and current variation with the help of order hop. A single longitudinal mode with continuous-wave output power reached up to 132.8 mW/facet for a drive current of 400 mA at 20 °C. The side-mode suppression ratio reached 36.25 dB. The wide tuning range and the simple fabrication steps promise our device an immense potential as light source in many applications such as atomic clocks and gas sensing.</p>

Abstract:A widely tunable distributed feedback (DFB)semiconductor laser with constant power and narrow linewidth is fabricated. The laser chip is based on the asymmetric phase-shifted DFB structure, which can effectively narrow the bandwidth of the output. By precisely controlling the temperature and driving current, the dynamic characteristic of internal carriers and the refractive index of the material can be controlled effectively, so wide-band tuning wavelength and constant output power are obtained. The wavelength tuning range is over 3. 5 nm, the laser power is 7. 4 mW, the linewidth is about 220kHz and the side mode suppression radio is 52. 7dB. This laser has wide application prospects for tunable diode laser absorption spectroscopy(TDLAS).

Abstract:We propose a novel approach of fast tunable laser, which uses high-speed driving circuit and DFB semiconductor laser array to achieve the fast switching of wavelength. We use single chip microcomputer and FPGA to form the control system, and a high-speed driving circuit to ensure the switching speed. The 8-channel DFB laser array was fabricated based on reconstruction-equivalent-chirp (REC) technique. The experimental result shows that the switching time of the wavelength is about 30 ns.
