Abstract:To achieve a high spectral purity Raman laser in a wide range of pump power, we propose the adjustable Raman threshold method and experimentally demonstrate a 6.85 kW ytterbium-Raman (Yb-Raman) fiber amplifier in this paper. The Raman threshold is adjusted to coordinate with pump power level via manipulating the Raman proportion from the master oscillator. The spectral purity of Raman laser at 1120 nm reaches 86.0 $\%$ at the highest output power and keeps over 65 $\%$ throughout. And the 3 dB bandwidth is maintained within 2.5 nm. The system shows potential in further power scaling-up because the four-wave-mixing-induced high-order Raman noise is circumvented by designing wavelengths of the seeders. This work not only reports the highest output power of the Yb-Raman fiber lasers (to the best of our knowledge), but also provides an approach to achieve an agile lasing threshold in the Yb-Raman fiber amplifiers without any structural adjustments. The Yb-Raman fiber amplifiers with high spectral purity over a broad range of power will have promising applications in communications, industry and scientific researches.

Abstract:By amplifying the cascaded random Raman fiber laser (RRFL) oscillator and ytterbium fiber laser oscillator, we present the first, to the best of our knowledge, demonstration of a 10-kW-level high-spectral-purity all-fiber ytterbium-Raman fiber amplifier (Yb-RFA). With a carefully designed backward-pumped RRFL oscillator structure, the parasitic oscillation between the cascaded seeds is avoided. Leveraging the RRFL with full-open-cavity as the Raman seed, the Yb-RFA realizes 10.7-kW Raman lasing at 1125 nm, which is beyond the operating wavelengths of all the reflection components used in the system. The spectral purity of the Raman lasing reaches 94.7% and the 3-dB bandwidth is 3.9 nm. This work paves a way to combine the temporal stability of the RRFL seed and the power scaling of Yb-RFA, enabling the wavelength extension of high-power fiber lasers with high spectral purity.

Abstract:Raman fiber laser (RFL), due to its unique advantages of wide tuning range, free of photon darkening, and low quantum defect, is becoming an important kind of high power laser source. In this manuscript, we demonstrate a kilowatt-level wavelength tunable RFL. It employs a typical master oscillator power amplifier configuration. The seed laser is a homemade tunable random RFL. The Raman gain fiber is a section of triple-clad passive fiber. At an optimal Raman fiber length of 150 m based on numerical simulations, 1135.7 W Raman signal at 1124.3 nm can be achieved under pump power of 1543 W, corresponding to a power conversion efficiency of 71.8 %. Moreover, by tuning the wavelength of seed laser, kilowatt-level Raman signal continuously tunable from 1119.8 nm to 1137.2 nm is demonstrated. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first kilowatt-level wavelength tunable RFL ever reported.

Abstract:An ultra-broadband tunable cascaded Raman random fiber laser pumped by a tunable (1020-1080 nm) ytterbium-doped fiber laser is investigated. By continuously adjusting the pump laser wavelength, the Raman random laser tunes accordingly due to the Raman gain competition. By increasing the pump power, up to the 5th order Raman random laser is achieved. As a result, 300 nm of continuous wavelength tuning from 1070 to 1370 nm is achieved by adjusting the pump wavelength and power altogether. The highest output power is 1.8 W at 1360 nm with an optical efficiency of 15% from 1080 nm. To the best of our knowledge, this is the widest wavelength tuning range reported for a random fiber laser so far. (C) 2016 Optical Society of America
Kilowatt-level Yb-Raman fiber amplifier with narrow-linewidth and near-diffraction-limited beam quality

Abstract:By focusing on a typical emitting wavelength of 1120 nm as an example, we present the first demonstration of a high-efficiency, narrow-linewidth kilowatt-level all-fiber amplifier based on hybrid ytterbium-Raman (Yb-Raman) gains. Notably, two temporally stable, phase-modulated single-frequency lasers operating at 1064 nm and 1120nm, respectively, were applied in the fiber amplifier, to alleviate the spectral broadening of the 1120 signal laser and suppress the stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) effect simultaneously. Over 1 kW narrow-linewidth 1120 nm signal laser was obtained with a slope efficiency of ~ 77% and a beam quality of M2~1.21. The amplified spontaneous emission (ASE) noise in the fiber amplifier was effectively suppressed by incorporating an ASE-filtering system between the seed laser and the main amplifier. Further examination of the influence of power ratios between the two seed lasers on the conversion efficiency had proved that the presented amplifier could work efficiently when the power ratio of 1120 nm seed laser ranged from 31% to 61%. Overall, this setup could provide a well reference for obtaining high power narrow-linewidth fiber lasers operating within 1100-1200 nm.

Abstract:A Raman fiber laser with more than 220 W output at 1.24 μm with phosphorus-doped single-mode fiber as gain medium is reported. The laser consists of a 30 m long piece of fiber and a pair of fiber Bragg gratings with different bandwidth, pumped with a high power 1064 nm Yb fiber laser. The optical conversion efficiency is 64% and the slope efficiency is 71.4%. The full width half-maximum linewidth at the maximum output is 5.6 nm. To the best of our knowledge, the reported power is an order magnitude higher than previous reports in phosphosilicate fiber Raman laser.

Furthermore, the experimental results demonstrate that the spectral linewidth broadening effect is tightly related to the injected power ratios between the two seed lasers. Overall, this setup could provide a reference on obtaining and optimizing high-power narrow-linewidth fiber lasers operating in the long wavelength extreme of the Yb gain spectrum.

Abstract:In this paper, we reported both the experimental demonstration and theoretical analysis of a Raman fiber laser based on a master oscillator–power amplifier configuration. The Raman fiber laser adopted the dual-wavelength bidirectional pumping configuration, utilizing 976 nm laser diodes and 1018 nm fiber lasers as the pump sources. A 60-m-long $25/400~\unicode[STIX]{x03BC}\text{m}$ ytterbium-doped fiber was used to convert the power from 1070 to 1124 nm, realizing a maximum power output of 3.7 kW with a 3 dB spectral width of 6.8 nm. Moreover, we developed a multi-frequency model taking into consideration the Raman gain spectrum and amplified spontaneous emission. The calculated spectral broadening of both the forward and backward laser was in good agreement with the experimental results. Finally, a 1.5 kW, 1183 nm second-order Raman fiber laser was further experimentally demonstrated by the addition of a 70-m-long germanium-doped passive fiber.

Abstract:Utilizing long-wavelength laser diodes (LDs) for pumping to achieve high-power fiber laser output is an effective method for attaining high quantum efficiency and excellent thermal management. In this work, we report on a Master Oscillator Power Amplifier (MOPA)-structured long-tapered Yb3+-doped fiber laser directly pumped by long-wavelength laser diodes. By shifting the center wavelength of the pump source to 1010 nm, the heat generation within the fiber laser is effectively controlled, thereby increasing the transverse mode instability (TMI) threshold. Additionally, the use of a long-tapered fiber enlarges the mode area and suppresses stimulated Raman scattering (SRS) effects that typically arise from increased fiber length. As a result, an output of 6030 W is achieved with an optical-to-optical (O–O) efficiency of 83.7%, a SRS suppression ratio exceeding 50 dB, and no occurrence of dynamic TMI. This approach provides a valuable reference for optimizing long-wavelength pumping to suppress nonlinear effects and also holds potential for wide-temperature operational applications.

Abstract:We demonstrate an all-fiber high-power narrow-linewidth fiber laser based on a homemade tapered Yb-doped fiber (T-YDF). The laser performance is investigated and systematically compared with different seed powers and pump manners. The experimental results reveal that the injected seed power requires a trade-off designed to take into account the impact of spectral broadening, nonlinear effects, and transverse mode instability (TMI). Compared with the co-pump manner, the counter-pump manner performs well in inhibiting nonlinearities, spectral broadening, and improving the TMI threshold. Under the counter-pump manner, this narrow-linewidth T-YDF amplifier realized a 2.09 kW output power with a 3 dB spectral linewidth of ∼0.34 nm, a beam quality of M2∼1.28 and a high Raman suppression ratio over 53.5 dB, the highest reported power for such a T-YDF-based narrow-linewidth single-mode laser, to the best of our knowledge. This work provides a promising pathway towards implementing monolithic high-power narrow-linewidth single-mode fiber lasers.

Abstract:We demonstrate a sub-nanosecond, high peak power Yb:YAG/Cr4+:YAG/YVO4 passively Q-switched Raman micro-laser (PQSRML) operating at 1134 nm. The effect of transmission of the output coupler (TOC) and Cr4+:YAG initial transmission (T0) on the Raman laser performance have been investigated. Stable Raman laser pulse trains have been observed for Yb:YAG/Cr4+:YAG/YVO4 PQSRMLs with different combinations of output couplers and Cr4+:YAG crystals. Maximum average output power of Raman laser was 142.8 mW with TOC = 11% output coupler and T0 = 90% Cr4+:YAG. Enhanced Stokes pulse performance of 24.1 μJ, 45.1 kW, 535 ps was achieved with TOC = 16% and T0 = 85% Cr4+:YAG. A modified Raman laser rate equation model is established and the theoretically calculated results are in fairly good agreement with experimental results.

Abstract:Limited by stimulated Raman scattering (SRS), amplified spontaneous emission (ASE) and transverse mode instability (TMI), it is challenging to achieve high-power laser output in ytterbium-doped fiber (YDF) lasers with operating wavelengths less than 1060 nm. In high-power fiber lasers, bi-tapered YDF can provide a balance between the suppression of SRS and TMI. In this work, we designed and fabricated a new double-cladding asymmetric bi-tapered YDF to suppress ASE and SRS in the 1050 nm monolithic fiber laser. The asymmetric bi-tapered YDF has an input end with a core/cladding diameter of ~20/400 μm, a middle section with a core/cladding diameter of ~30/600 μm and an output end with a core/cladding diameter of ~25/500 μm. The working temperature of the non-wavelength-stabilized 976 nm laser diodes was optimized to improve the TMI threshold. An output power of over 5 kW with an efficiency of 83.1% and a beam quality factor M2 of about 1.47 were achieved. To the best of our knowledge, this represents the highest power nearly-single mode in 1050 nm fiber lasers. This work demonstrates the potential of asymmetric bi-tapered YDF for achieving a high-power laser with high beam quality in 1050 nm fiber lasers.

Pure passive fiber enabled highly efficient Raman fiber amplifier with record kilowatt power

Abstract:Kilowatt-level high efficiency all-fiberized Raman fiber amplifier based on pure passive fiber is proposed for the first time in this paper. The laser system is established on master oscillator power amplification configuration while a piece of graded-index passive fiber is utilized as stokes shifting as well as gain medium, which is entirely irrelevant to rare-earth-doped gain mechanism. When the pump power is 1368.8 W, we obtained 1002.3 W continuous-wave laser power at 1060 nm with the corresponding optical-to-optical efficiency of 84%. The beam parameter M2 improves from 9.17 of the pump laser to 5.11 of the signal laser through the amplification process, and the brightness enhancement is about 2.57 at maximum output power as a consequence of the beam clean-up process in the graded-index fiber. To the best of our knowledge, we have demonstrated the first kilowatt-level high efficiency Raman fiber amplifier based on pure passive fiber with brightness enhancement.

Abstract:We demonstrate a self-starting 700 MHz repetition rate Yb:fiber laser incorporated with a phase biased nonlinear amplifying loop mirror as an artificial saturable absorber. The laser delivers a maximum power of 150 mW and a pulse width of 215 fs at a pump power of 710 mW. The integration of relative intensity noise (RIN) between 10 Hz and 10 MHz results in a minimum integrated RIN of 0.015%. The phase noise of the fundamental repetition rate was also characterized at different net-cavity dispersion. Although the laser is made of nonpolarization maintaining fiber, the mode locking sustains over two weeks in open air, showing its environmental stability.

Abstract:The power scaling of ytterbium-doped fiber (YDF) lasers emitting at the wavelength range of 1030 nm–1060 nm has been limited by amplified spontaneous emission (ASE), stimulated Raman scattering (SRS) effect, and transverse mode instability (TMI). These effects pose challenges in achieving a high-output power laser within the range of 1030 nm–1060 nm while maintaining a high signal-to-noise ratio. Based on a counter-pumped fiber laser amplifier utilizing our self-developed ytterbium-doped fiber, we have successfully showcased a 4.8-kW laser output at 1050 nm, accompanied by an 85.3% slope efficiency and nearly diffraction-limited beam quality. By effectively applying ASE and TMI, and controlling the Raman Stokes at ∼17 dB below the primary signal wavelength, we have achieved optimal performance at the maximum power level. This high efficiency has been attained through a pump-sharing structure combined with cost-effective, non-wavelength-stabilized 976-nm laser diodes.

Abstract:A synchronously pumped fiber Raman laser (SPFRL) operating at 1.7 μm is proposed and experimentally demonstrated for the first time to the best of our knowledge. Through the third harmonic pumping by a 1563 nm picosecond pulsed fiber laser, the Stokes pulses are generated with an average power of 1.9 W, a pulse duration of 21 ps, and a repetition frequency of 52.9 MHz. The center wavelength and the 3-dB bandwidth are 1694.3 nm and 0.96 nm respectively. This work provides a pathway to a power scalable ultrafast laser at 1.7 µm via a compact and elegant all-fiber solution.

Abstract:Abstract Power scaling based on traditional ytterbium-doped fibers (YDFs) is limited by optical nonlinear effects and transverse mode instability (TMI) in high-power fiber lasers. Here, we propose a novel long tapered fiber with a constant cladding and tapered core (CCTC) along its axis direction. The tapered-core region of the fiber is designed to enhance the stimulated Raman scattering (SRS) threshold and suppress higher-order mode resonance in the laser cavity. The CCTC YDF was fabricated successfully with a modified chemical vapor deposition (MCVD) method combined with solution doping technology, which has a cladding diameter of 400 μm and a varying core with a diameter of ~24 μm at both ends and ~31 μm in the middle. To test the performance of the CCTC fiber during high-power operation, an all-fiber laser oscillator based on a CCTC YDF was investigated experimentally. As a result, a maximum output power of 3.42 kW was achieved with an optical-to-optical efficiency of 55.2%, although the TMI effect was observed at an output power of ~3.12 kW. The measured beam quality ( M 2 factor) was ~1.7, and no sign of the Raman component was observed in the spectrum. We believe that CCTC YDF has great potential to simultaneously mitigate the SRS and TMI effects, and further power scaling is promising by optimizing the structure of the YDF.

Abstract:A high peak-power and narrow-linewidth all-fiber Raman pulsed laser operating around 1.65 µm is introduced. A 1541 nm laser seed is modulated into pulse trains, which will be used as the Raman pump laser, by driving a reflective semiconductor optical amplifier (RSOA) with a continuous periodic square-wave voltage. A homemade high peak-power 1541 nm pulsed laser is employed to modulate and amplify a 1653.7 nm distributed feedback laser (DFB) seed synchronously in a segment of the 52-meter-long highly germania-doped fiber (HGDF). The repetition-rate and the pulse-width of the 1653.7 nm pulsed laser are 100 kHz and 31 ns, respectively. The peak power is estimated to be as high as about 30.85 W, and a 3-dB linewidth as narrow as less than 0.08 nm is achieved when the average power of 1541 nm pump is 3.1 W. The wavelength of Raman pulsed laser can be tuned from 1652.0 nm to 1654.0 nm continuously with an optical signal-to-noise ratio (OSNR) of more than 35 dB.

Abstract:We report a miniature, wavelength-selectable crystalline Raman laser operating either in the yellow (588 nm) or lime (559 nm) selected simply by changing the temperature of an intracavity LBO crystal. Continuous-wave (CW) output powers are 320 mW and 660 mW respectively, corresponding to record diode-visible optical conversion efficiencies of 8.4% and 17% for such miniature devices. The complex laser behavior arising from interplay between nonlinear processes is studied experimentally and theoretically. We show that the interplay can lead to complete suppression of the first-Stokes field and that the phase matching conditions for maximum visible powers differ markedly for different length LBO crystals. By using threshold measurements, we calculate the round-trip resonator losses and show that crystal bulk losses dominate over other losses. As a consequence, Raman lasers utilizing shorter LBO crystals for intracavity frequency mixing can produce higher visible output power. These are new considerations for the optimum design of CW intracavity Raman lasers with visible output. (C) 2011 Optical Society of America
