Abstract:High power all fiber mid-IR supercontinuum (SC) generation in a ZBLAN fiber pumped by a 2 μm master oscillator power amplifier (MOPA) system is demonstrated. A semiconductor saturable absorber mirror (SESAM) passively mode-locked laser with pulse width of 26 ps at 1960 nm is used as the seed of the MOPA system. A laser spectrum extending from ~1.9 μm to beyond 2.6 μm is generated in a subsequent thulium-doped fiber amplifier (TDFA). Then, the spectrum is further broadened to the mid-IR region in the ZBLAN fiber. A mid-IR SC extending from 1.9 to 3.9 μm with 7.11 W average output power is obtained based on a large mode area TDFA, the SC power for wavelengths longer than 2.5 μm is 3.52 W with a power ratio of 49.5% with respect to the total SC power. The overall optical conversion efficiency from the 790 nm pump of the large mode area TDFA to the total SC output is 10.4%. To the best of our knowledge, both the 7.11 W total average power and 3.52 W average power in wavelengths beyond 2.5 μm are the highest power ever reported for a mid-IR SC generation in ZBLAN fiber pumped by 2 μm fiber lasers and TDFAs.

Abstract:An all-fiber supercontinuum (SC) source with record average output power of 714 W and spectrum ranging from 690 nm to 2350 nm is demonstrated. The method of SC generation from an ytterbium-doped fiber amplifier is used to achieve the high-power SC output. The source also exhibits a flat spectrum ranging from 1050 nm to 2095 nm at the −10 dB level. The parameters that influence the output power and spectrum of SC, including the pulse width of the seed laser and the passive fiber length in the last stage fiber amplifier, are analyzed in detail. To the best of our knowledge, the output power of SC in this work is the highest power that has been publicly reported. The scheme has the advantage of good robustness, which also has the potential to further increase the SC output power to the kilowatt level.

Abstract:Supercontinuum (SC) sources covering near-infrared and midinfrared region have attracted enormous interest and found significant applications in tissue imaging, sensing, spectroscopy, defense, and environmental monitoring. Herein, an 8.45 W all-fiber ultraflat SC source with a spectral range of 1.01-4.05 mu m using a flat high-power 1.9-2.7 mu m SC fiber source to pump a piece of fluorotellurite fiber is presented. The SC spectrum exhibits a 3 dB bandwidth of 1850 nm, ranging from 1870 to 3720 nm, and a 10 dB bandwidth of 2770 nm, ranging from 1120 to 3890 nm. The measured power stability is 0.19% (root mean square) for 5 h of continuous operation, proving the excellent power stability of the system. To the best of knowledge, the SC spectrum exhibits the widest reported 3 and 10 dB bandwidths for 1-4 mu m SC sources. An ultraflat, broadband-coverage, high-power midinfrared supercontinuum laser source is proposed and thoroughly studied. The nonlinear medium is a fluorotellurite fiber with stable thermal properties, high nonlinear coefficient, and good water resistance. Abstract:Wideband supercontinuum (SC) generation has attracted considerable attention due to its various practical applications in many fields. We report on all-fiber SC generation in hybrid highly nonlinear fibers (HNLFs) pumped with a femtosecond erbium-doped fiber laser (EDFL). Based on the nonlinear polarization rotation (NPR) technique, the EDFL is compactly constructed with a hybrid device integrating a wavelength-division multiplexing (WDM) coupler, a tap coupler, and a polarization-sensitive isolator. The SC emission in HNLFs with different dispersions is characterized and the optimum length of HNLF is found. The SC in the hybrid HNLF, constructed by two sections of HNLFs with positive and zero dispersions, could approximately span an octave spanning in the 20 dB bandwidth. Our system suggests an inexpensive, effective and compact construction for SC generation.

Abstract:We demonstrated an ultra-broadband supercontinuum (SC) laser source with a wavelength range spanning the near-infrared (NIR) to mid-infrared (MIR) region. The SC spectrum was generated in a very short piece of highly nonlinear silica fiber (HNLF) which has a zero-dispersion wavelength (ZDW) of 1.55 µm. The pump source used has a spectral coverage of 1.5∼2.4 µm which covers the ZDW of HNLF, resulting in a dramatic blue and red shift of the spectrum through strong non-linear effects. As the pump laser pulse launched into HNLF, a SC spectrum with broadband range of 0.92∼2.92 µm and maximum average power of 5.09 W was achieved, which sets record coverage of HNLF-based watts magnitude SC laser sources for now, to the best of the authors' knowledge. The setup consists of silica fiber that can be considered easy-to-implement and with a cost-effectiveness scheme for ultra-broadband SC generation that could be easily applied to optical fiber sensing and spectral imaging technology.

Abstract:In this letter, we demonstrated an all-silica fiber 1.5- $3.2 ~\mu \text{m}$ supercontinuum (SC) source based on germanium-doped highly nonlinear fibers (HNLF). By optimizing the length of HNLF, as the pump injected into the HNLF increased to 6 W, a 4.12 W broadband SC source extending from 1516 to 3182 nm was obtained. The 3 dB spectrum bandwidth was up to 1022 nm ranging from 1855 nm to 2877 nm, and the 1 dB bandwidth was up to 878 nm covering from 1959 nm to 2837 nm. To the best of our knowledge, this is the flattest SC in the 2- $3 ~\mu \text{m}$ region based on doped silica fiber to date.

Abstract:We demonstrate an all-fiber SC laser source based on a 0.9 m-long 94 mol.% GCF which was pumped by a single-mode (SM) TDFA-based 1.9 similar to 2.7 mu m laser source. A 2.59 W flat SC spectrum with coverage of 1.9 similar to 3.5 mu m were achieved under a seed pulse repetition rate of 600 kHz and a pulse duration of 1 ns. The 3 dB bandwidth was 1210 nm ranging from 1970 to 3180 nm and the 10 dB bandwidth was 1380 nm ranging from 1920 to 3300 nm.

Abstract:We demonstrate an all-fiber supercontinuum (SC) source delivering up to 40 W of average power ranging from 750 to 2200 nm. The laser source is based on a self-Q-switched pump-sharing oscillator-amplifier. The self-Q-switched master oscillator generates giant pulses, amplified in the high-power stage. Finally, a passive fiber acts as a nonlinear stage, improving the spectrum flatness as well as the spectral broadening. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first time that a pump-sharing oscillator-amplifier is used for SC generation and is based on the use of a submeter Ytterbium-doped fiber length inside the oscillator.

Abstract:We demonstrated numerically the generation of broadband, coherent supercontinuum (SC) spectra in the mid-infrared region using dispersion-engineered all-chalcogenide microstructured fibers (MOFs). The 1-cm-long hexagonal fiber can be made with Ge11.5As24S64.5 glass as a low-refractive-index material embedded in a Ge11.5As24Se64.5 glass matrix. By optimizing the structural parameters, we determined a broad and flat all-normal-dispersion characteristic up to 14 μm. A highly coherent broadband SC with an intensity greater than −3 dB in the range from 5973 to 8695 nm is obtained when the fiber is pumped by a 7 μm laser with pulse duration of 50 fs and peak power of 6 kW. Flat-top SC of −30 dB level can be observed utilizing identical pump pulse parameters, covering wavelengths from 3823 to 13577 nm (>1.5 octaves). This broadband coherent MIR SC source can be applied in frequency metrology, optical coherence tomography, biomedical imaging, and few-cycle pulse compression.
2 Mu M Femtosecond Fiber Laser Source And Its Application For Mid-Ir Supercontinuum Generation

Abstract:A compact thulium-doped fiber chirped pulse amplifier (FCPA) is presented and used to pump a ZrF4-BaF2-LaF3-AlF3-NaF (ZBLAN) fiber for mid-infrared (MIR) supercontinuum generation. The FCPA is seeded by Raman soliton, which is generated by femtosecond erbium doped fiber laser and a piece of highly nonlinear fiber (HNLF) via soliton self frequency shift (SSFS) process. Additional with fiber stretcher and three stages thulium-doped fiber amplifier, the laser source delivers up to 10 W average power at repetition rate of 10 MHz with pulse width of 252 fs after grating compressor. Supercontinuum generation is realized by coupling the pulses into 10 m ZBLAN fiber with an aspheric lens. Since the laser source operates at anomalous dispersion regime of ZBLAN fiber, the spectral broadening is mainly dominanted by SSFS and stimulated Raman scattering (SRS) in this dispersion regime. Maximum output power of 800 mW corresponding to pulse energy of 80 nJ has been obtained with 5 dB spectrum ranging from 2 mu m to 3.5 mu m, which is limited by the low pump coupling efficiency of similar to 10% at this time. This fiber based supercontinuum source may have a wide variety of applications such as medical imaging, micro-spectroscopy and gas detection.

Abstract:We present a high-power, polarization-maintaining (PM) Er 3+ -doped fluoride fiber amplifier, which enables watt- level, linearly-polarized (LP) superfluorescent outputs around 2.8 μm by using a non-PM Er 3+ -doped fluoride fiber superfluorescent source (FSS) after polarization controlling as the seed. Based on an optimized scheme, the gained superfluorescent signal with a 20 dB bandwidth of 95 nm (2710∼2805 nm) can yield a maximum power of 2.32 W and a polarization extinction ratio (PER) of up to ∼23.6 dB. To our knowledge, this is the first demonstration of a mid-infrared (mid-IR) PM fiber amplifier, and the power also represents, until now, the highest level from a FSS in the mid-IR. Further power scaling is only limited by the seed power, and can be anticipated by boosting seed power or/and adopting multi-stage amplification. This work provides an alternative way for high-power, LP, mid-IR FSS, enabling a range of real-world applications.

Abstract:We provide an all fiber spectrally flat supercontinuum (SC) source generated by pumping a 20 m graded-index multimode fiber (MMF). The fiber pigtails of the all-fiber pump pulse laser and the MMF fused with a special method. After measuring the spectrum and the power, the output power extending from the visible to the mid-infrared is 2 W. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first watt-class and spectrally flat all fiber structured SC source based on graded-index MMF. Finally, we studied the evolution of the SC with increasing output power, which permitted us to more clearly recognize the nonlinear phenomena in the generation of the SC.

Abstract:We present, for the first time, a watt-level ultra-flat all-silica fiber supercontinuum (SC) source spanning from the near-infrared (NIR) to mid-infrared (MIR) region with negligible pump residuals. This SC source is pumped by amplified 1.57-mu m rectangular noise-like pulses (NLPs), whose broad spectral and flat-top temporal characteristics enhance the spectral flatness and coverage of SC spectra. By cascading a piece of highly nonlinear silica fiber (HNLF), a SC ranging from 0.91 to 2.92 mu m is obtained with a 3-dB bandwidth of similar to 716.1 nm, a 10-dB bandwidth of similar to 1533.6 nm, and an average power of 2.08 W. To our best knowledge, the spectral coverage, 3-dB, and 10-dB bandwidths represent the highest achieved levels for a watt-level all-silica fiber SC source covering the range from the NIR to MIR. Our system offers a simple and easily implemented solution for an ultra-flat NIR-to-MIR SC source, promising significant applications in optical coherence tomography and chemical detection.

Abstract:We demonstrate the broadband supercontinuum (SC) generation in photonic crystal fiber (PCF), highly nonlinear fiber (HNLF) and ZBLAN (ZrF4-BaF2-LaF3-AlF3-NaF) fiber with a passively mode-locked erbium-doped fiber laser (EDFL). The passively mode-locked EDFL incorporates a CNT-based saturable absorber and has achieved a pulse width of 620 fs with a pulse repetition rate of 18 MHz. The spectral broadening phenomena inside each fiber has been observed with respect to the variation in seed pulse power. The SC spectrum bandwidth of 1050 nm, 1400 nm, and 2000 nm has been achieved using PCF, HNLF, and ZBLAN fiber respectively.

Abstract:Chalcogenide fibers are good candidates for generating supercontinuum (SC) radiation due to their large nonlinear refractive indices and high mid-infrared transmission, but their low damage thresholds hamper the SC power scaling, thereby limiting the ultimately achieved SC brightness. Here, we report an As2Se3 fiber SC system pumped by a novel random Q-switched 2 mu m Tm3+ fiber laser. The maximum SC output power is 1.09 W with slope efficiency of 24%, and the SC spans from similar to 1980 to similar to 2500 nm with a spectral width of similar to 500 nm at the -20 dB points. The spectral power density is similar to 2 mW nm(-1). To the best of our knowledge, this is the highest power and spectral density SC emission ever achieved in chalcogenide fibers.

Abstract:Compact and high-power 2.8 μm ultrashort pulse laser generated in a strictly all-fiberized system is a growing interest in the field of the mid-infrared high-power laser community. In this Letter, we demonstrated the generation of watt-level 2.8 μm ultrashort pulse laser from an all-fiber Er:ZBLAN amplifier by using the red-shifted Raman soliton pulse as the seed source. As the incident pump power increased to 8.8 W, the average output power and pulse energy of the 2.8 μm soliton pulses were boosted to 1.25 W and 26.02 nJ, respectively. To achieve the all-fiber configuration, the pump laser at 976 nm was coupled into Er:ZBLAN fiber by a home-made fluoride-fiber-based side-pump combiner (FFSPC). Numerical simulations were performed by solving the generalized nonlinear Schrödinger equation, which showed that the pulse duration of amplified pulses was limited by intracavity dispersion accumulation in Er:ZBLAN fiber amplifier, and the final pulse duration was estimated to be 5 ps. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first all-fiber structured 2.8 μm ultrashort pulse amplifier with an FFSPC. Our results may provide an effective approach for the generation of all-fiber high-power mid-infrared ultrafast lasers.

Abstract:We demonstrate ultra-flat and high-efficient mid-infrared supercontinuum (MIR SC) generation in indium fluoride (InF 3 ) fiber with output average power of 9.9 W, power conversion efficiency of 67.8 % and 3 dB- spectrum width of > 1570 nm. It is pumped by amplified 2 μm noise-like pulses and generated in a piece of 10 m InF 3 fiber with core diameters of 9.5 μm. The 2 μm noise-like pulses is realized by nonlinear amplifying loop mirror mode-locking technique and amplified by two-stage amplifiers with pulse repetition rate of 1.513 MHz and 3-dB pulse envelope width of 2.2 ns. To further increase efficiency, the InF 3 fiber is spliced directly to the pigtail of main amplifier with 92.47 % coupling efficiency, which is in good agreement with 92 % theoretical result of fundamental-mode coupling efficiency. To the best of the authors' knowledge, this work achieves the flattest (3 dB spectral coverage of 2120 - 3690 nm) and highest efficiency (67.8%) in MIR SC seeded by 2 μm pulses.

Abstract:A novel low-loss selenium-based chalcohalide fiber, with a low zero-dispersion wavelength, was prepared by an innovative preparation process. The composition optimized fiber has a wide transmission range of up to 11.5 μm, a lowest fundamental mode zero-dispersion wavelength of 4.03 μm, and a minimum optical loss of 1.12 dB/m at 6.4 μm, which provides a possibility to replace As2S3 and As2Se3 in a cascade of ZrF4-BaF2-LaF3-AlF3-NaF(ZBLAN)-As2S3-As2Se3 fiber in the practical all-fiberized supercontinuum (SC) source. Meanwhile, the broadest SC spectrum, ∼1.2 to 15.2 μm, was achieved by pumping a 12-cm-long fiber with a femtosecond laser at a deep anomalous-dispersion region. Furthermore, simulations are adopted to interpret the results as well as to demonstrate spectral evolution along the fiber. To the best of our knowledge, this is the broadest SC spectrum reported in any selenium-based chalcogenide fiber.

Abstract:Up to similar to 520 mu J broadband mid-infrared (IR) supercontinuum (SC) generation in telecommunication multimode fiber (NEW) directly pumped by a 2.054 mu m nanosecond Q-switched Tm,Ho:YVO4 laser is demonstrated. An average output power of 3.64 W is obtained in the band of similar to 1900 to similar to 2600 nm, and the corresponding optic-to-optic conversion efficiency is 67% by considering the coupling efficiency. The spectrum has extremely high flatness with negligible intensity variation (<2%) in the wavelength interval of similar to 2070 to similar to 2475 nm. The SC long-wavelength edge is limited by the silicon glass material loss, and by optimizing the MMF length, the SC spectrum could extend out to similar to 2.6 mu m. The output SC pulse shapes are measured at different output powers, and no splits are found. The SC laser beam is nearly diffraction limited with an M-2 =1.15 in 2.1 mu m measured by the traveling knife-edge method, and the laser beam spot is monitored by an infrared vidicon camera.

Abstract:Supercontinuum(SC) source has found numerous applications, such as DWDM, frequency metrology, optical coherence tomography, and optical measurement. We demonstrate an all-fiber supercontimuun source generated in highly nonlinear fiber (HNLF). The HNLF is pumped by our mode-locked fiber laser with pulse width and peak power, 21.1ps and kW, respectively. An ultra-broadband supercontinuum extends from 1000 nm to 1750 nm is obtained, and the spectrum is flat with the amplitude variation less than 4dB except around the fiber zero dispersion wavelength. The spectrum of our supercontinuum source can extend beyond 1750 nm, but due to the limitation of the measured range of optical spectrum analyzer (AQ6317B), the spectrum of the supercontinuum source beyond 1750 nm is not yet obtained in our lab now.
