Abstract:We demonstrate the design, fabrication, and characterization of side-coupled airmode nanobeam photonic crystal cavities in silicon-on-insulator platform. Results show that repeatable devices achieve similar high loaded quality factors (>10(4)) and large optical energy ratio in low refractive region. The unload Q-factors of the fabricated cavities are estimated to exceed 10(5). With side-coupled configuration, high transmission of through port is achieved with typical insertion loss less than 0.5 dB. Wavelength shifts of the measured resonances with respect to the designed values are observed and well explained by considering the fluctuation of etching depth. The demonstrated side-coupled airmode nanobeam photonic crystal cavities may find their applications in ultracompact integrated photonics, especially for on-chip photonic sensor, notch filter, or optical switch.

Abstract:We present an on-chip filter that is based on the grating-assisted contra-directional coupler (GACDC) implemented on a silicon nitride rib waveguide platform. This filter enjoys the benefit of an unlimited free spectral range (FSR) on the red side of the stop/passband. Unlike a Bragg reflector, the GACDC filter has the advantage of coupling the rejected light contra-directionally into a bus waveguide, instead of reflecting it back to the input. This property makes it an add/drop filter suitable for pump rejection and allows effective cascading to provide an even higher extinction ratio compared to the single-stage version. In this Letter, we experimentally demonstrate that a 16-stage cascaded GACDC filter can provide a stop band with a bandwidth smaller than 3 nm and an extinction ratio as high as 68.5 dB.

Abstract:Antisymmetric multimode nanobeam photonic crystal cavities (AM-NPCs) are proposed and demonstrated in this paper. Due to transverse symmetry-breaking of the antisymmetric multimode periodic waveguide, anti-crossing of the fundamental mode and 1st-order mode is realized and confirmed by band structure calculation. Two-mode filtering and reflection-free cavity filters based on this characteristic are demonstrated. Experimental results on silicon-on-insulator platform shows that broadband (> 100 nm) reflection suppression (< -10 dB) and high-Q (7 × 104) AM-NPCs can be achieved using existed design methodology and fabrication facility. We also explain resonance splitting of the measured transmission spectra and find resonance-enhanced mode-conversion phenomena in the AM-NPCs.

Abstract:A dual-band optical filter based on a single microring resonator embedded with nanoholes is theoretically and experimentally demonstrated for the first time. A numerical model based on transfer matrix method is utilized to simulate the performance of this device. The coupling between the microring resonator and the Fabry-Pérot resonator formed by nanoholes gives rise to the dual-band optical filtering spectrum. In our experiment, a single microring resonator embedded with nanoholes was fabricated on a commercial 220-nm-thick-top-silicon silicon-on-insulator (SOI) platform. Good performance was achieved with measured extinction ratio of 9 dB, insertion loss of lower than 1 dB, and quality factor of 11900. Both experimental and simulation results are in good agreement.
Ultracompact, Reflection-Free and High-Efficiency Channel Drop Filters Based on Photonic Crystal Nanobeam Cavities

Abstract:We propose an ultracompact channel drop filter (CDF) based on photonic crystal nanobeam cavities. The conditions for implementing such an ideal CDF are derived from the temporal coupled-mode equations governing the operation of the CDF. By considering the intercoupling of the two involved nanobeam cavities, some ambiguities of the previous equivalent circuit model analysis are cleared up. Practical configurations on silicon-on-insulator (SOI) for the proposed CDF are suggested with a typical length less than 15 μm. Finite difference time domain (FDTD) method calculations show that the proposed filter can achieve drop efficiency higher than 99% without any reflection. Compared to the λ/4-shifted Bragg grating resonators based CDF, the proposed CDF is more compact, high-efficient and reflection-free. It is also easy to implement a low-power tunable filter due to the ultrahigh quality factor Q and ultrasmall modal volume V of the involved photonic crystal nanobeam cavities.

Abstract:Broadband filters with sharp transition edges are important elements in diverse applications, including Raman and fluorescence spectral analysis, wideband wavelength-division multiplexing (WDM), and multi-octave interferometry. While the multi-layer thin-film interference broadband filter has been widely applied in various free-space optical systems, its integrated counterpart is still far from mature, which is also highly desired for constructing chip-scale miniature optical modules. In this article, we design, fabricate, and characterize an integrated broadband filter with sharp transition edges. An adiabatic coupler based on silicon nitride (SiN) and silicon oxynitride (SiON) composite waveguide is employed here. Long-pass, short-pass, band-pass, and band-stop filters can be realized in a single design of the composite waveguide coupler for a specific wavelength range, with only a difference in the SiN taper waveguide width. Experimental results with a roll-off value of larger than 0.7 dB nm−1 and a 15 dB extinction ratio (ER) are presented.

Abstract:Ultracompact channel add-drop filter utilizing a single nanobeam photonic crystal cavity is analyzed, designed, and demonstrated. Anti-symmetric multimode periodic waveguide structure is employed to implement mode conversion and thus produce degenerate resonant states in the involved nanobeam cavity. Theoretical analysis results indicate that the inter-modal conversion coefficient and the waveguide-cavity coupling coefficient have significant effects on the lineshape of the filter. By carefully engineering the structure of the multimode nanobeam cavity and its side-coupled configuration, we successfully achieve an ultracompact add-drop filter with device area around 20 μm2. The experimental results on silicon-on-insulator (SOI) platform show that the insertion losses of drop port, the crosstalk of add port of the fabricated filter are -1.1 dB and -14.7 dB, respectively. The modal volume of the involved nanobeam cavity are small as 1.2(λ/n) 3 , indicating huge potentials in developing low-power consumption tunable devices for future very large scale integration (VLSI) photonic applications.

Abstract:We demonstrate a high-Q hybrid surface-plasmon-polariton-photonic crystal (SP3C) nanobeam cavity. The proposed cavities are analyzed numerically using the three-dimensional finite difference time domain (3D-FDTD) method. The results show that a Q-factor of 2076 and a modal volume V of 0.16(λ/2n)3 can be achieved in a 50 nm silica-gap hybrid SP3C nanobeam cavity when it operates at telecommunications wavelengths and at room temperature. V can be further reduced to 0.02(λ/2n)3 when the silica thickness decreases to 10 nm, which leads to a Q/V ratio that is 11 times that of the corresponding plasmonic-photonic nanobeam cavity (without silica). The ultrahigh Q/V ratio originates from the low-loss nature and deep sub-wavelength confinement of the hybrid plasmonic waveguide, as well as the mode gap effect used to reduce the radiation loss. The proposed structure is fully compatible with semiconductor fabrication techniques and could lead to a wide range of applications.

Abstract:A polarization-insensitive optical filter based on silicon and silicon nitride film is demonstrated. The lateral-shift apodization is introduced to suppress the sidelobes. The fabricated optical filter shows polarization-insensitive performances with large 3dB-bandwidths of 3.5-5.1 nm, low losses of 1.72-1 dB, decent SLSRs of 18.5-19.1 dB for both polarizations.

Abstract:We experimentally demonstrate a new optical filter design based on a vertically coupled photonic crystal (PhC) cavity and a bus waveguide monolithically integrated on the silicon-on-insulator platform. The use of a vertically coupled waveguide gives flexibility in the choice of the waveguide material and dimensions, dramatically lowering the insertion loss while achieving very high coupling efficiencies to wavelength scale resonators and thus allows the creation of PhC-based optical filters with very high extinction ratio (>10 dB).

Abstract:We present an on-chip filter with a broad tailorable working wavelength and a single-mode operation. This is realized through the application of topological photonic crystal nanobeam filters employing synthesis parameter dimensions. By introducing the translation of air holes as a new synthetic parameter dimension, we obtained nanobeams with tunable Zak phases. Leveraging the bulk-edge correspondence, we identify the existence of topological cavity modes and establish a correlation between the cavity's interface morphology and working wavelength. Through experiments, we demonstrate filters with adjustable filtering wavelengths ranging from 1301 to 1570 nm. Our work illustrates the use of the synthetic translation dimension in the design of on-chip filters, and it holds potential for applications in other devices such as microcavities.
Mid-infrared Nonlinear Silicon Hybrid Waveguide with High Figure of Merit

Abstract:Mid-infrared (MIR) integrated waveguides with strong local field enhancement and relatively low loss have shown their potential in nonlinear optical applications. We present a novel highly nonlinear silicon hybrid waveguide by setting an insulator-metal-insulator structure with [2-[4-(dimethylamino)phenyl]-3-([4-(dimethylamino)phenyl]ethynyl)buta-1,3-diene-1,1,4,4-tetracarbonitrile] (DDMEBT) and silver materials into the silicon slot. The mode field is strongly confined in the DDMEBT layers via the surface plasmon polariton effect. Two rectangular silicon nanobridges are used to further confine the optical field and reduce the loss simultaneously. The waveguide dimensions are optimized to obtain a figure of merit as high as 0.55 at 2.1 mu m and a zero-dispersion wavelength of 2.06 mu m. In a 6.6-mm-long waveguide, a maximum four-wave mixing efficiency of -6.65 dB and a bandwidth of 512 nm (1.894-2.406 mu m) can be simultaneously obtained, pumped by a 2.104-mu m source with a power of only 500 mW. Our designed waveguide exhibits excellent overall performance for nonlinear optical applications such as all-optical signal processing in the MIR band. (C) 2018 Optical Society of America

Abstract:We propose and demonstrate experimentally an ultracompact resonant system exhibiting sharp asymmetric Fano-resonance, in which a tiny photonic crystal nanobeam cavity is laterally coupled to a waveguide Fabry-Perot resonator. Under the presence of cavity intrinsic loss, we find that the system produces sharper and higher extinction ratio Fano resonance spectra only if appropriate phase is selected. The whole device (∼6 μm2) is implemented on silicon on insulator platform, and experimentally we observe steep-slope Fano resonance with extinction ratio of 7.3 dB, slope above 5 dB/nm, and average insertion loss less than 1.8 dB.

Abstract:Photonic crystal (PhC) nanobeam cavities have attracted increasing attention owing to the advantages of high Q-factor, small mode volume and no limitation of FSR. Various PhC cavities have been developed for optical communications, optical sensors, optomechanics, etc.. We investigate the design, fabrication, and experimental characterization of high quality factor PhCnanobeam cavities on silicon. The results show that PhCnanobeam cavities have the potential to ful?ll the aforementioned requirements and form a building block for achieving on-chip optical filtering and sensing applications.

Abstract:Based on cascaded Mach-Zehnder lattice filter, an eight-channel silicon photonic (de-)multiplexer with flat passband is demonstrated in the O-band. The insertion loss of the device is -0.55~-2.48dB and the channel crosstalk is below -7dB. The FSR and channel spacing are about 36nm and 4.4nm respectively.

Abstract:In this study, we demonstrate high-extinction stop-band photonic filters based on Mach–Zehnder interferometer (MZI)-coupled silicon nitride (Si3N4) resonators fabricated using I-line lithography technology. Leveraging the low-loss silicon nitride waveguide, our approach enables the creation of stable, high-performance filters suitable for applications in quantum and nonlinear photonics. With destructive interference at the feedback loop, photonic filters with an extinction ratio of 35 dB are demonstrated with four cascaded MZI-coupled resonators. This cascading design not only enhances the filter's extinction but also improves its spectral sharpness, providing a more selective stop-band profile. Experimental results agree well with the theoretical results, showing linear scaling of extinction ratios with the number of cascaded MZI-coupled resonators. The scalability of this architecture opens the possibility for further integration and optimization in complex photonic circuits, where high extinction ratios and precise wavelength selectivity are critical for advanced signal processing and quantum information applications.

High-Q Weakly Modulated Nanobeam Cavity Based On A Suspended Silicon Dioxide Waveguide

Abstract:Photonic crystal (PhC) cavities have drawn plenty of attentions during the past several decades for the advantages of ultra-high Q factor and small mode volume. PhC cavities have various applications such as quantum information processing, low threshold lasers, optomechanics, and nonlinear optics. PhC cavities based on silicon material have been heavily investigated due to their compatibility with complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor (CMOS) technology, small feature size and low cost. However, apart from the advantage of high Q factor, silicon based PhC cavities suffer from the drawbacks of high insertion loss because of the mode mismatch with fiber and relatively low sensitivity especially for the sensing application. On the other hand, silicon dioxide (silica) waveguide experience relatively smaller loss and owns a similar refractive index to numerous liquid materials to be detected, which will leads to high sensitivity for a silica based PhC cavity sensor. In this paper, we propose a high Q factor (Q = 15500) silica based PhC nanobeam cavity with high sensitivity (the wavelength shift per refractive index unit (RIU) is S = 338 nm/RIU) at the telecommunication wavelength (1550 nm). Since the refractive index contrast for silica waveguide is low for the realization of the photonic bandgaps, it is essential to utilize a silica waveguide suspended in free space. The PhC nanobeam cavity is then formed by etching a series of elliptical holes, whose dimensions linearly decrease from the center to both ends, directly into the silica waveguide. For the sake of high transmission on-resonance wavelength while maintaining high Q factor, it's important to etch partly into the waveguide, which results in a low-refractive-index perturbation structure. The calculated on-resonance transmission is about 0.26. The novel proposed PhC nanobeam cavity shows a sensitivity 3 times larger than the one based on silicon counterparts and outperforms other low index-contrast PhC cavities by a higher on-resonance transmission. Such a structure can also be used in spectrally filtering system and nonlinear optics.

Abstract:On-chip photonic filters are one of the most important elements for spectrum manipulation in various optical systems, including wavelength-division multiplexing and spectrum analysis. Currently, it is still very challenging to achieve scalable photonic filters with flexibly-designed bandwidths, low excess losses, flat tops, and ultra-wide free-spectral ranges (FSRs). Here an unprecedented silicon photonic filter is proposed and demonstrated with high performances by using apodised antisymmetric multimode subwavelength gratings (MSWGs) structures. For the present silicon photonic filter, the MSWGs enable the index engineering in the Bragg lattice, which easily manipulates the coupling coefficient, the local effective index, and the mode profile flexibly. As a result, the strong side lobes of the grating filter are efficiently suppressed, while the bandwidth can be designed flexibly and the FSR is free. The fabricated silicon photonic filter is FSR-free and shows a low excess loss of <1 dB and a high sidelobe suppression ratio of 20-40 dB.
