Abstract:Valley-Hall photonic topological insulators (VPTIs) provide an intriguing approach to suppress backscattering, enhance the robustness of transport, and shrink the footprints of the topological devices. However, previous works focused on the transmission characteristics of the symmetric topological waveguides with few reports on functional devices involving edge mode coupling, which hinders the implementation of various functional devices such as optical couplers/splitters, switches, filters, and etc. In this paper, a new method to manipulate the mode field distributions in topological waveguides is demonstrated by introducing asymmetric edge states, thus the mode coupling with an arbitrary coupling ratio can be achieved between topological waveguides. As an example, a topological power splitter with a 33:67 splitting ratio is demonstrated experimentally. In addition, to verify the robust transmission property of the topological photonic devices, a high-speed data transmission experiment for a topological power splitter is performed and a high data rate of 128 Gb s(-1) is achieved. These results promise a new method to manipulate the mode field distribution in topological waveguides and devices that may find wide applications in diverse fields such as optical communications, nanophotonics, and quantum information processing.

Abstract:Edge states in topological photonic systems have the robust unidirectional propagation feature which originates from the topological nature of the bulk band dispersion. In this work, we propose a topological photonic crystal (PC) waveguide that is formed by introducing an air gap in an all-dielectric PC with $C_{6v}$ symmetry. The dispersion of the line defect states is tunable by varying the width of the air gap. Based on their field distributions, the states can be classified into even- and odd-symmetric states. The even-symmetric states are found to be the nontrivial topological edge states and exhibit pseudospin-locking unidirectional propagation property. By introducing disorders to the waveguide, these states are proven to be robust with well suppressed backscattering.

Abstract:A tunable optical notch filter was realized by thermally shifting the TM-like (the light's electric field perpendicular to the substrate) bandgap of a silicon photonic crystal slab W1 line-defect waveguide with silica cladding. This device is compact-its footprint is 340 x 16 mu m(2), excluding the electrode pads. The 3-dB bandwidth of the device was about 5 run, and the extinction ratio at the center wavelength was as high as 40 dB. A maximum center wavelength shift of 17.9 run was attained at a heating power of 0.7 W, with a tuning efficiency of 25.5 mn/W. The tuning response time was less than 100 mu s.

Abstract:We propose a new kind of reconfigurable topological valley photonic crystal (TVPC), and a novel topological waveguide can be formed by constructing a domain wall between two TVPCs with opposite valley-Chern indices. The topological waveguide mode in the composite TVPC has large group refractive index. A topologically protected coupled waveguide cavity system is then designed by introducing a hexagonal ring cavity at the center of the straight domain wall of a combined TVPC, in which a narrow plasmon induced transparency window rises at 3.8848 GHz with a Q-factor of 1387 and a maximum group refractive index as high as 186. We propose a notch filter with a resonant frequency of 3.8852 GHz and a very high Q-factor of 10224. By changing the refractive index of liquid crystals via an external voltage applied between two parallel metal plates, the filter can be switched between band-pass and band-stop based on the reconfigurable topological interface state.

Abstract:A topologically protected ring-resonator formed in valley photonic crystals is proposed and fabricated on a silicon slab. The unidirectional transmission and robustness against structure defects of its resonant modes are illustrated. Coupled with topological waveguides, the topological ring is functioned as notch and channel-drop filters. The work opens up a new avenue for developing advanced chip-integrated photonic circuits with attributes of topological photonics.

Concentric Silicon Micro-Ring Resonators with Enhanced Transmission Notch Depth

Abstract:In this work, we have analyzed, fabricated and demonstrated concentric micro-ring resonators in silicon-on-insulator (SOI) structure for enhanced transmission notches. The operation principles of the concentric ring resonators are studied by time-domain coupled-mode theory. Directional coupling between concentric rings offers another freedom in designing deep notch optical filters and ultra-sensitive biosensors. The finite-difference-time-domain (FDTD) simulations have shown the improvement of the notch depth, evenly distributed mode field and the effect of the resonance shift. The device is demonstrated in silicon-on-insulator structure. Transmission notch depth improvement of ~ 15dB is demonstrated for the 21-20.02-μm-radius double-ring structure comparing with the single 21-μm-radius ring.

Abstract:Based on cascaded Mach-Zehnder lattice filter, an eight-channel silicon photonic (de-)multiplexer with flat passband is demonstrated in the O-band. The insertion loss of the device is -0.55~-2.48dB and the channel crosstalk is below -7dB. The FSR and channel spacing are about 36nm and 4.4nm respectively.

Abstract:A silicon photonic wire filter based on an asymmetric side-wall Bragg grating in a multimode silicon-on-insulator strip waveguide is demonstrated. The operating principle is based on the contra-directional coupling between the transverse electric fundamental (TE0) and first-order (TE1) modes, which is enabled by the asymmetric spatially periodic refractive-index perturbations. An asymmetric Y-junction is cascaded at the input port of the filter so as to drop the Bragg reflection. Compared with conventional Bragg grating-based filters, this device eliminates the back reflection at the input port and the 6 dB inherent insertion loss at the drop port; moreover, a narrow 3 dB bandwidth can be obtained with a large critical dimension as a result of the weak coupling strength between the TE0 and TE1 modes inside the multimode waveguide. Experimental results show that a bandwidth of similar to 2.8 nm is achieved by a large corrugation width of 150 nm. The insertion loss at the drop port is -2.1 dB, and the extinction ratio is -33 dB at the through port. (C) 2016 Optical Society of America

Abstract:Topological edge states in a photonic integrated circuit based on the platform of silicon nitride are demonstrated with a two-dimensional coupled resonator optical waveguide array involving the synthetic magnetic field for photons at near-infrared wavelengths. Measurements indicate that the topological edge states can be observed at certain wavelengths, with light travelling around the boundary of the array. Combined with the induced disorders in fabrication near the edge, the system shows the defect immunity under the topological protection of edge states.

Abstract:On-chip optical communications are in increasingly demand for low-loss, small-footprint and power-efficient waveguiding solutions in the telecom band. However, most integrated optical circuits suffer from high propagation loss and low integration degree. Through manipulating the valley-dependent topological phase of light, we have experimentally demonstrated both robust optical transport and electrical modulation of lightwaves at telecom wavelengths in the valley photonic crystals. With the adoption of valley kink states, the 25 Gbit/s optical signal at 1550 nm is successfully transmitted through a highly twisted interface. Furthermore, an extreme high data rate of 100 Gbit/s is demonstrated with such topological waveguide by wavelength division multiplexing. The electrical tunability of the topological modulators based on thermo-optic effect is also verified, opening a novel route towards active valley kink photonic devices. Our study shows a great possibility of making use of the topological protection in building up high-speed datalinks on a chip.

Abstract:Topologically protected photonic edge states allow backscattering-free and disorder-immune light propagations, offering a new scheme for the development of on-chip information systems. Valley degree of freedom is one of the most reliable way to achieve topologically non-trivial states. Here, we take advantage of heterogeneous topological interfaces to construct integrated optical devices in the valley-dependent photonic crystals. Localized Berry curvature around the KK point guarantees the existence of valley kink states at telecom wavelengths below the light cone, ensuring both optical robustness and light confinement. We harness the combination of two kinds of bearded interfaces to realize wavelength-selective topological routing of light in the micro-ring resonators. The proposed bearded interfaces can support edge modes with large group indices up to 90, showing a great potential to obtain remarkable slow light effects. This work paves the way to implement optical buffers and reconfigurable photonic devices with the adoption of photonic valley pseudospin.

Abstract:Integrated tunable optical filters are essential components in photonic signal processors, telecom systems, sensors, and quantum optical devices. Two of the most important features of a tunable filter are its dimensions and power consumption. Herein, the design and experimental validation of an on-chip optical filter composed of a 1D topological photonic crystal cavity based on a hybrid integrated lithium tantalite-silicon platform is presented. The strong optical confinement of the boundary state allows the fabrication of a tunable filter with an ultra-compact size of 1.14 x 75 mu m2 is demonstrated. Moreover, lithium tantalite has excellent electro-optic properties and enables ultra-low-power wavelength tuning of the topological boundary state. The measured power consumption and tuning efficiency of the device are 0.0218 nW pm-1 and 6.64 pm V-1, respectively. The anisotropy of thin-film lithium tantalite is verified by evaluating its tuning efficiency at different optical angles. The device can compensate for thermally induced refractive index changes approximate to 20 degrees C, exhibiting operational robustness. High-speed transmission experiments confirm the stability of the developed tunable filter. This optical filter implements a topological structure with a compact size and can potentially be applied in on-chip quantum optics, nonlinear optics, and optical sensing. A tunable topological optical filter based on integrated Si-LiTaO3 platform is proposed for ultra-low-power tuning via the Pockels effect of LiTaO3. The 1D topological filter is capable of linear bidirectional tuning with a wavelength tuning efficiency of 6.64 pm V-1 and a power efficiency of 0.0218 nW pm-1. image

Abstract:Valley kink states and valley-polarized chiral edge states, whose topologically protected properties have great application potential in high-speed information processing and communication, have recently become important frontiers in topological photonics. However, valley photonic topological insulators mainly support single-type topological states through breaking lattice spatial symmetry. It remains difficult for different types of topological states to coexist in a specific photonic system. In this paper, we propose judiciously designed substrate-integrated topological photonic crystals (but without metal vias) with C3 symmetry that can support valley kink states and valley-polarized chiral edge states in different waveguide channels. Via numerical simulations and measurements, we demonstrate the robust transmission of both valley kink states and valley-polarized chiral edge states through sharp corners and we show high-efficiency coupling between classical guided waves and topological waves. More importantly, we achieve smooth transitions between chiral and trivial edge states, trivial edge states and valley kink states, as well as valley kink states and valley-polarized chiral edge states by bridging different waveguide channels. Our proposed design is beneficial for interfacing with existing functional photonic waveguides or devices and opens up an alternative pathway for advanced planar integrated topological photonic systems with subwavelength thicknesses. https://doi.org/10.1103/PhysRevApplied.21.014046 © 2024 American Physical Society

Abstract:The topological nanophotonic wavelength router, which can steer light with different wavelength signals into different topological channels, plays a key role in optical information processing. However, no effective method has been found to realize such a topological nanophotonic device. Here, an on-chip topological nanophotonic wavelength router working in an optical telecom band is designed based on a topology optimization algorithm and experimentally demonstrated. Valley photonic crystal is used to provide a topological state in the optical telecom band. The measured topological wavelength router has narrow signal peaks and is easy for integration. This work offers an efficient scheme for the realization of topological devices and lays a foundation for the future application of topological photonics.
Photonic Crystal Waveguides and Their Applications

Abstract:Two-dimensional (2D) slab photonic crystal waveguides (PCWGs) on silicon-on-insulator (SOI) wafer were designed and fabricated. Full photonic band gap, band gap guided mode, and index guided mode were observed by measuring the transmission spectra. Mini-stop-bands in the PCWG were simulated with different structure paramaters. Coupling characteristics of PCWG were investigated theoretically considering the imperfections during the fabrication process. It was found that suppressing power reservation effect can realize both short coupling length and high coupling efficiency.

Abstract:Inspired by topological insulators in the condensed matter physics, topological photonics is a new paradigm, which is free of light backscattering at sharp waveguide bends due to the topological protection, and shows unidirectional light propagation based on the valley-chiral locking. Herein, we propose a two-channel Y-branch wavelength demultiplexer operating at the telecom band using the topological photonic integrated circuits for the first time. The proposed Y-branch wavelength demultiplexer is designed as adjoining and separating of two different topological interfaces at its input and output ports, respectively. Topological edge states with spectral interleaving can be excited in the two different topological interfaces, and be split into two output ports of the demultiplexer in short and long wavelengths. The Y-branch topological waveguide can be used as a dichroic mirror or a wavelength filter for separating light at two different wavelengths. The proposed topological inte-grated circuit is immune to structural defects. It is promising for the practical applications of optical in-terconnects and signal processing on a silicon photonic chip.
