Abstract:Edge states in topological photonic systems have the robust unidirectional propagation feature which originates from the topological nature of the bulk band dispersion. In this work, we propose a topological photonic crystal (PC) waveguide that is formed by introducing an air gap in an all-dielectric PC with $C_{6v}$ symmetry. The dispersion of the line defect states is tunable by varying the width of the air gap. Based on their field distributions, the states can be classified into even- and odd-symmetric states. The even-symmetric states are found to be the nontrivial topological edge states and exhibit pseudospin-locking unidirectional propagation property. By introducing disorders to the waveguide, these states are proven to be robust with well suppressed backscattering.

Abstract:Valley-Hall photonic topological insulators (VPTIs) provide an intriguing approach to suppress backscattering, enhance the robustness of transport, and shrink the footprints of the topological devices. However, previous works focused on the transmission characteristics of the symmetric topological waveguides with few reports on functional devices involving edge mode coupling, which hinders the implementation of various functional devices such as optical couplers/splitters, switches, filters, and etc. In this paper, a new method to manipulate the mode field distributions in topological waveguides is demonstrated by introducing asymmetric edge states, thus the mode coupling with an arbitrary coupling ratio can be achieved between topological waveguides. As an example, a topological power splitter with a 33:67 splitting ratio is demonstrated experimentally. In addition, to verify the robust transmission property of the topological photonic devices, a high-speed data transmission experiment for a topological power splitter is performed and a high data rate of 128 Gb s(-1) is achieved. These results promise a new method to manipulate the mode field distribution in topological waveguides and devices that may find wide applications in diverse fields such as optical communications, nanophotonics, and quantum information processing.

Abstract:Valley photonic crystals (VPCs) provide an intriguing approach to suppress backscattering losses and enable robust transport of light against sharp bends, which could be utilized to realize low-loss and small-footprint devices for on-chip optical communications. However, there are few studies on how to achieve power-efficient tunable devices based on VPCs, which are essential for implementing basic functions such as optical switching and routing. Here, we propose and experimentally demonstrate a thermally tunable add-drop filter (ADF) based on VPCs operating at telecommunication wavelengths. By leveraging the topological protection of the edge state and the distinct property of negligible scattering at sharp bends, a small footprint of 17.4 × 28.2 μm 2 and a low insertion loss of 2.7 dB can be achieved for the proposed device. A diamond-shaped microloop resonator is designed to confine the light and enhance its interaction with the thermal field generated by the microheater, leading to a relatively low power of 23.97 mW needed for switching the output signal from one port to the other. Based on the thermally tunable ADF under the protection of band topology, robust data transmission is implemented with an ultrahigh data rate of 132 Gb/s. Our work shows great potential for developing high-performance topological photonic devices with the thermally tunable silicon-based VPCs, which offers unprecedented opportunities for realizing topologically protected and reconfigurable high-speed datalinks on a chip.

Plasmon-induced Transparency in a Reconfigurable Composite Valley Photonic Crystal.

Abstract:We propose a new kind of reconfigurable topological valley photonic crystal (TVPC), and a novel topological waveguide can be formed by constructing a domain wall between two TVPCs with opposite valley-Chern indices. The topological waveguide mode in the composite TVPC has large group refractive index. A topologically protected coupled waveguide cavity system is then designed by introducing a hexagonal ring cavity at the center of the straight domain wall of a combined TVPC, in which a narrow plasmon induced transparency window rises at 3.8848 GHz with a Q-factor of 1387 and a maximum group refractive index as high as 186. We propose a notch filter with a resonant frequency of 3.8852 GHz and a very high Q-factor of 10224. By changing the refractive index of liquid crystals via an external voltage applied between two parallel metal plates, the filter can be switched between band-pass and band-stop based on the reconfigurable topological interface state.

Abstract:Topological photonic insulators can enable the development of efficient integrated photonic devices with minimized scattering losses. The optical properties of the majority of topological structures proposed to date are fixed by designs such that no changes to their performance can be made once the device has been fabricated. However, tunability is important for many applications, including modulators, switches, and optical buffers. We therefore propose a straightforward way to dynamically control transmission in a silicon-based topological photonic crystal using all-optical free-carrier excitation that allows for fast refractive index modulation. The changes in both the real and imaginary parts of the refractive index cause a blue shift of the transmission spectrum by up to 20 nm and a reduction in transmission by approximately 85% . With the control mechanism used here, we can achieve switching times of the order of nanoseconds. The structures proposed here are compatible with the standard semiconductor industry fabrication process and operate at telecommunication wavelengths. © 2019 Optical Society of America under the terms of the OSA Open Access Publishing Agreement

Abstract:A wavelength tunable optical add-drop multiplexer based on silicon photonic wire waveguides with Bragg-grating-reflectors was demonstrated by tuning the dropping wavelength through thermooptic effect. A 6.6-nm dropping wavelength shift was obtained at a 0.82-W heating power. For the device that is presently polarization-dependent, the 3-dB channel-dropping bandwidth was 0.4 nm and the extinction ratio at the dropping wavelength for port THROUGH was better than 17 dB for assuming 1.6-nm wavelength spacing dense wavelength-division multiplexing. The average tuning speed was about 200 mu s.
Electrical tunable topological valley photonic crystals for on-chip optical communications in the telecom band

Abstract:On-chip optical communications are in increasingly demand for low-loss, small-footprint and power-efficient waveguiding solutions in the telecom band. However, most integrated optical circuits suffer from high propagation loss and low integration degree. Through manipulating the valley-dependent topological phase of light, we have experimentally demonstrated both robust optical transport and electrical modulation of lightwaves at telecom wavelengths in the valley photonic crystals. With the adoption of valley kink states, the 25 Gbit/s optical signal at 1550 nm is successfully transmitted through a highly twisted interface. Furthermore, an extreme high data rate of 100 Gbit/s is demonstrated with such topological waveguide by wavelength division multiplexing. The electrical tunability of the topological modulators based on thermo-optic effect is also verified, opening a novel route towards active valley kink photonic devices. Our study shows a great possibility of making use of the topological protection in building up high-speed datalinks on a chip.

Abstract:Topological photonics offers a powerful platform for next-generation nanophotonic chips, capitalizing on their remarkable resilience to disorder and defects. Among the two-dimensional (2D) photonic topological insulators, valley-Hall (VH) and pseudo-spin-Hall (PSH) topological insulators have emerged as the most practical designs, as they do not require breaking time-reversal symmetry. These photonic topological insulators support robust edge states, demonstrating promising potential for a wide range of applications, from on-chip communication to optical computing and sensing. However, the conversion between distinct topological phases (VH and PSH) in terahertz (THz) band has not been achieved. Here we experimentally demonstrate a THz on-chip spin-valley converter through adiabatic evolution in 2D parameter space without closing the bulk bandgap. By leveraging the adiabatic phase transition, we confirm the high-efficiency conversion between two valley states in a valley-spin-valley converter. In addition, we verify the robustness of THz PSH topological energy transport through sharply twisted corners. Our findings not only advance the understanding of topological phases in photonics but also hold promise for the development of innovative photonic devices with enhanced performance and functionality.

Abstract:A tunable optical notch filter was realized by thermally shifting the TM-like (the light's electric field perpendicular to the substrate) bandgap of a silicon photonic crystal slab W1 line-defect waveguide with silica cladding. This device is compact-its footprint is 340 x 16 mu m(2), excluding the electrode pads. The 3-dB bandwidth of the device was about 5 run, and the extinction ratio at the center wavelength was as high as 40 dB. A maximum center wavelength shift of 17.9 run was attained at a heating power of 0.7 W, with a tuning efficiency of 25.5 mn/W. The tuning response time was less than 100 mu s.

Abstract:An on-chip integrated one-dimension topological insulator in the optical communication range is realized directly in an integrated photonic circuit. The system takes on a configuration of a 220 nm thick 1D photonic crystal heterostructure sandwiched between two gold films. A photonic topological edge state centered at 1550 nm is obtained for the chip-integrated one-dimension topological insulator made of a silicon/SiO2 photonic crystal heterostructure with a feature size of only 2.25 mu m integrated with a silicon waveguide. On/off switching of the photonic topological edge state was also achieved in a 1D topological insulator made of a VO2/SiO2 photonic crystal heterostructure based on a thermally induced insulator-to-metal transition of VO2. This system not only paves the way for practical applications of photonic topological insulators in integrated photonic devices and chips but also provides a platform for fundamental studies of topological photonics.

Abstract:Dispersion-tunable photonic topological waveguides have recently attracted much attention, due to their promising applications on topological devices with tunable operational frequencies. Since dispersions of topological waveguides traverse the whole bandgaps of bulk structures, tuning the dispersions (especially the bandwidths) requires changing the whole bulk of corresponding photonic topological insulators. A previously reported material-modification approach provided a parallel tuning on such numerous lattices; however, the increased material loss deteriorated transmissions of the topological waveguide. Here, a parallel tuning approach on structures is theoretically proposed and demonstrated, which spawns dispersion-tunable photonic topological waveguides without increasing material loss. Based on the bilayer honeycomb model, a topological valley waveguide by utilizing bilayer designer plasmonic structures is constructed, accomplished with dispersion tunings by altering interlayer distance. Experimental results validate the theoretical model and display a 61%-relative-tuning range of frequency, with a tunable relative bandwidth up to 16%. This approach may promise applications in tunable topological lasers, robust delay lines, and intelligent photonic devices.
Optical Add-Drop Multiplexer with Hexagonal-Hole Lattice PC Slab Waveguides

Abstract:We report on a channel drop filter with a mode gap in the propagating mode of a photonic crystal slab that was fabricated on silicon on an insulator wafer. The results, simulated with the 3-dimensional finite-difference time-domain and plane-wave methods, demonstrated that an index-guiding mode for the line defect waveguide of a photonic crystal slab has a band gap at wave vector k = 0.5 for a mainly TM-like light-wave. The mode gap works as a distributed Bragg grating reflector that propagates the light-wave through the line defect waveguide, and can be used as an optical filter. The filter bandwidth was varied from 1-8 nm with an r/a (r: hole radius, a: lattice constant) variation around the wavelength range of 1550-1600 nm. We fabricated a Bragg reflector with a photonic crystal line-defect waveguide and Si-channel waveguides and by measuring the transmittance spectrum found that the Bragg reflector caused abrupt dips in transmittance. These experimental results are consistent with the results of the theoretical analysis described above. Utilizing the Bragg reflector, we fabricated channel dropping filters with photonic crystal slabs connected between channel waveguides and demonstrated their transmittance characteristics. They were highly drop efficient, with a flattop drop-out spectrum at a wavelength of 1.56 μm and a drop bandwidth of 5.8 nm. Results showed that an optical adddrop multiplexer with a 2-D photonic crystal will be available for application in WDM devices for photonic networks and for LSIs in the near future.

Abstract:Topological photonic devices provide robust transmission of optical signals. This work proposes a topological modulator scheme, which constructs valley photonic crystals on a silicon slab. Mach-Zehnder (MZ) structure is formed by the valley edge states, and based on the carrier dispersion effects, electro-optic modulation is achieved. The device size is only 18.59 × 47.1 μm. Theoretical analysis and simulation results show that the half-wave voltage length product can reach 0.0201 V ∙ cm. Compared to traditional silicon MZ modulators, it greatly reduces size and improves modulation efficiency.

Tailored Triggering of High-Quality Multi-Dimensional Coupled Topological States in Valley Photonic Crystals

Abstract:The combination of higher-order topological insulators and valley photonic crystals has recently aroused extensive attentions due to the great potential in flexible and efficient optical field manipulations. Here, we computationally propose a photonic device for the 1550 nm communication band, in which the topologically protected electromagnetic modes with high quality can be selectively triggered and modulated on demand. Through introducing two valley photonic crystal units without any structural alteration, we successfully achieve multi-dimensional coupled topological states thanks to the diverse electromagnetic characteristics of two valley edge states. According to the simulations, the constructed topological photonic devices can realize Fano lines on the spectrum and show high-quality localized modes by tuning the coupling strength between the zero-dimensional valley corner states and the one-dimensional valley edge states. Furthermore, we extend the valley-locked properties of edge states to higher-order valley topological insulators, where the selected corner states can be directionally excited by chiral source. More interestingly, we find that the modulation of multi-dimensional coupled photonic topological states with pseudospin dependence become more efficient compared with those uncoupled modes. This work presents a valuable approach for multi-dimensional optical field manipulation, which may support potential applications in on-chip integrated nanophotonic devices.
Direct Observation of Terahertz Topological Valley Transport.

Abstract:Topological photonics offers the possibility of robust transport and efficiency enhancement of information processing. Terahertz (THz) devices, such as waveguides and beam splitters, are prone to reflection loss owing to their sensitivity to defects and lack of robustness against sharp corners. Thus, it is a challenge to reduce backscattering loss at THz frequencies. In this work, we constructed THz photonic topological insulators and experimentally demonstrated robust, topologically protected valley transport in THz photonic crystals. The THz valley photonic crystal (VPC) was composed of metallic cylinders situated in a triangular lattice. By tuning the relevant location of metallic cylinders in the unit cell, mirror symmetry was broken, and the degenerated states were lifted at the K and K' valleys in the band structure. Consequently, a bandgap of THz VPC was opened, and a nontrivial band structure was created. Based on the calculated band structure, THz field distributions, and valley Berry curvature, we verified the topological phase transition in such type of THz photonic crystals. Further, we showed the emergence of valley-polarized topological edge states between the topologically distinct VPCs. The angle-resolved transmittance measurements identified the bulk bandgap in the band structure of the VPC. The measured time-domain spectra demonstrated the topological transport of valley edge states between distinct VPCs and their robustness against bending and defects. Furthermore, experiments conducted on a topological multi-channel intersectional device revealed the valley-polarized characteristic of the topological edge states. This work provides a unique approach to reduce backscattering loss at the THz regime. It also demonstrates potential high-efficiency THz functional devices such as topologically protected beam splitters, low-loss waveguides, and robust delay lines.
Ultra-high-efficiency Tunable Silicon Photonic Filter

Abstract:Optical tunable filters play a key role in silicon photonic integrated circuits. Highly energy-efficient tunability and a wide continuous tuning range are strongly desired for silicon photonics filters. All-optically thermo-optic (TO) tunable devices based on the light absorbers integrated close to the silicon structure as localized heaters have attracted increasing attention because optical heaters, compared with electrical ones, can greatly reduce thermal loads and heat leakage for the device. They provide a new approach to implementing high-efficiency TO tuning with a fast response. In this work, we propose and experimentally demonstrate an on-chip all-optically tunable filter based on a suspended silicon microdisk resonator with an ultra-compact optical heater, which is a platinum absorber deposited directly on the top of the ridge waveguide. Attributed to the novel optical pumping scheme, ultra-small device size, and suspended waveguide structure, an ultra-high tuning efficiency of 37.70 nm/mW is achieved. Only 1.405 mW pump power is required to tune the single-resonance filter over a wide spectral range of ∼54.5 nm. The demonstrated tunable optical filter has the advantages of high tuning efficiency, compact footprint, and simple fabrication processes, which has significant applications for on-chip all-optical systems.
Multiple Broadband Infrared Topological Photonic Crystal Valley States Based on Liquid Crystals

Abstract:Spectral tunable technology has to meet the requirements of strong robustness and wide spectral range. We propose a method for the transmission and manipulation of infrared topological photonic crystal valley states based on tunable refractive index method that exhibits broad-spectrum and multi-band characteristics, along with a tunable emission angle. With this structure, different rotational directions of vortex light sources can independently excite the K valley and K′ valley within the frequency band ranging from 75.64 THz to 99.61 THz. At frequencies from 142.60 THz to 171.12 THz, it is possible to simultaneously excite both the K valley and K′ valley. The dual refractive index tunable design allows for the adjustment of the emission angle at a fixed frequency, enabling control over the independent excitation of either a single K valley or K′ valley, as well as their simultaneous excitation. This capability has significant implications for photonic computation and tunable filtering, offering enhanced operational flexibility and expanded functionality for future optical communications and integrated optical circuits.

Abstract:Valley kink states and valley-polarized chiral edge states, whose topologically protected properties have great application potential in high-speed information processing and communication, have recently become important frontiers in topological photonics. However, valley photonic topological insulators mainly support single-type topological states through breaking lattice spatial symmetry. It remains difficult for different types of topological states to coexist in a specific photonic system. In this paper, we propose judiciously designed substrate-integrated topological photonic crystals (but without metal vias) with C3 symmetry that can support valley kink states and valley-polarized chiral edge states in different waveguide channels. Via numerical simulations and measurements, we demonstrate the robust transmission of both valley kink states and valley-polarized chiral edge states through sharp corners and we show high-efficiency coupling between classical guided waves and topological waves. More importantly, we achieve smooth transitions between chiral and trivial edge states, trivial edge states and valley kink states, as well as valley kink states and valley-polarized chiral edge states by bridging different waveguide channels. Abstract:Topologically protected photonic edge states allow backscattering-free and disorder-immune light propagations, offering a new scheme for the development of on-chip information systems. Valley degree of freedom is one of the most reliable way to achieve topologically non-trivial states. Here, we take advantage of heterogeneous topological interfaces to construct integrated optical devices in the valley-dependent photonic crystals. Localized Berry curvature around the KK point guarantees the existence of valley kink states at telecom wavelengths below the light cone, ensuring both optical robustness and light confinement. We harness the combination of two kinds of bearded interfaces to realize wavelength-selective topological routing of light in the micro-ring resonators. The proposed bearded interfaces can support edge modes with large group indices up to 90, showing a great potential to obtain remarkable slow light effects. This work paves the way to implement optical buffers and reconfigurable photonic devices with the adoption of photonic valley pseudospin.
