Abstract:A novel aqueous-based gelcasting technique is developed to fabricate dense Li6.4La3Zr1.4Ta0.6O12 (LLZTO) electrolytes with complex structures, which is based on an aqueous slurry with a solid LLZTO fraction of 75 wt % and a copolymer of isobutylene and maleic anhydride as dispersant as well as gelling agent. A new recipe is developed by introducing LiOH into the aqueous slurry to suppress the Li+/H+ exchange reaction, ensuring that the gelcasting LLZTO has a pure cubic garnet phase. The gelcasting LLZTO has a high ionic conductivity of 0.74x10(-3) S cm(-1) (25 degrees C), an excellent lithium cycling stability, and a wide voltage window up to 5 V, which are comparable with literature reports and can satisfy the requirements of the next-generation lithium batteries with higher energy densities. The aqueous-based gelcasting technique is promising in the cost-efficient and environment-friendly manufacturing of high-quality LLZTO solid electrolytes for all-solid-state batteries.

Abstract:Li7La3Zr2O12 (LLZO) is one of the most promising candidate solid electrolytes for high-safety solid-state batteries. However, similar to other solid electrolytes containing volatile components during high-temperature sintering, the preparation of densified LLZO with high conductivity is challenging involving the complicated gas-liquid-solid sintering mechanism. Further attention on establishing low-cost laborastory-scale preparation craft platform of LLZO ceramic is also required. This work demonstrates a "pellet on gravel" sintering strategy, which is performed in a MgO crucible and box furnace under ambient air without any special equipment or expensive consumables. In addition, the competition between lithium loss from the sintering system and internal grain densification is critically studied, whereas the influences of particle surface energy, Li-loss amount, and initial excess Li2O amount are uncovered. Based on the sintering behavior and mechanism, optimized craft platform for preparing dense LLZO solid electrolytes including mixing, calcination, particle tailoring and sintering is provided. Finally, exemplary Ta-doped LLZO pellets with 2 wt % La2Zr2O7 additives sintered at 1260-1320 °C for 20 min deliver Li+ conductivities of ∼9 × 10-4 S cm-1 at 25 °C, relative densities of >96%, and a dense cross-sectional microstructure. As a practical demonstration, LLZO solid electrolyte with optimized performance is applied in both Li-Li symmetric cells and Li-S batteries. This work sheds light on the practical production of high-quality LLZO ceramics and provides inspiration for sintering ceramics containing volatile compounds.

Abstract:Nonflammable solid-state electrolytes can potentially address the reliability and energy density limitations of lithium-ion batteries. Garnet-structured oxides such as Li7La3Zr2O12 (LLZO) are some of the most promising candidates for solid-state devices. Here, three-dimensional (3D) solid-state LLZO frameworks with low tortuosity pore channels are proposed as scaffolds, into which active materials and other components can be infiltrated to make composite electrodes for solid-state batteries. To make the scaffolds, we employed aqueous freeze tape casting (FTC), a scalable and environmentally friendly method to produce porous LLZO structures. Using synchrotron radiation hard X-ray microcomputed tomography, we confirmed that LLZO films with porosities of up to 75% were successfully fabricated from slurries with a relatively wide concentration range. The acicular pore size and shape at different depths of scaffolds were quantified by fitting the pore shapes with ellipses, determining the long and short axes and their ratios, and investigating the equivalent diameter distribution. The results show that relatively homogeneous pore sizes and shapes were sustained over a long range along the thickness of the scaffold. Additionally, these pores had low tortuosity and the wall thickness distributions were found to be highly homogeneous. These are desirable characteristics for 3D solid electrolytes for composite electrodes, in terms of both the ease of active material infiltration and also minimization of Li diffusion distances in electrodes. The advantages of the FTC scaffolds are demonstrated by the improved conductivity of LLZO scaffolds infiltrated with poly(ethylene oxide)/lithium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide (PEO/LITFSI) compared to those of PEO/LiTFSI films alone or composites containing LLZO particles.

Abstract:Structure design is of great importance for composite solid electrolytes to meet the high requirements for lithium batteries today. Herein, a novel composite polymer electrolyte with vertically aligned fast ion pathways has been constructed through the in-situ UV-induced polymerization of poly (butyl acrylate) (PBA) based gel polymer electrolyte inside the honeycomb-structure Li6.5La3Zr1.5Ta0.5012 (LLZTO) scaffolds by freeze casting. The addition of LLZTO enhances the anion adsorption through the Lewis-acid sites of the La ions and reduces the Li+ complexation by participating in the interaction of C=O...Li+. Therefore, the interface of PBA and LLZTO scaffold serves as a continuous Li+ transport pathway and the resulting composite solid electrolyte exhibits a high ionic conductivity (5.098×10−4 S cm−1), near single-ion conducting characteristic (a transference number of 0.8) and high electrochemical stability window (5.15 V). Based on the above superior performance, the composite electrolyte promotes uniform distribution of lithium ion concentration and electrolyte potential. Thus, quasi-solid-state LiFePO4/Li cells exhibit excellent cycling performance (capacity retention of 91.7% after 300 cycles at 0.5 C).

Abstract:Solid-state batteries (SSBs) promise better safety and potentially higher energy density than the conventional liquid- or gel-based ones. In practice, the implementation of SSBs often necessitates 3D porous scaffolds made by ceramic solid-state electrolytes (SSEs). Herein, a general and facile method to sinter 3D porous scaffolds with a range of ceramic SSEs on various substrates at high temperature in seconds is reported. The high temperature enables rapid reactive sintering toward the desired crystalline phase and expedites the surface diffusion of grains for neck growth; meanwhile, the short sintering duration limits the coarsening, thus accurately controlling the degree of densification to preserve desired porous structures, as well as reducing the loss of volatile elements. As a proof-of-concept, a composite SSE with a good ionic conductivity (i.e., ≈1.9 × 10−4 S cm−1 at room temperature) is demonstrated by integrating poly(ethylene oxide) with the 3D porous Li6.5La3Zr1.5Ta0.5O12 scaffold sintered by this method. This method opens a new door toward sintering a variety of ceramic-SSE-based 3D scaffolds for all-solid-state battery applications.

Abstract:All-solid-state Li batteries (ASSLBs) are regarded as the systems of choice for future electrochemical energy storage. Particularly, the garnet Li7La3Zr2O12 (LLZO) is one of the most promising solid electrolytes due to its stability against Li metal. However, its integration into ASSLBs is challenging due to high temperature and long dwell time required for sintering. Advanced sintering techniques, such as Ultrafast High-temperature Sintering, have shown to significantly increase the sintering rate. Direct contact to graphite heaters allows sintering of LLZO within 10 s due to extremely high heating rates (up to 104 K min−1) and temperatures up to 1500 °C to a density around 80 %. The LLZO sintered in vacuum and Ar atmosphere has good mechanical stability and high phase purity, but kinetic de-mixing at the grain boundaries was observed. Nevertheless, the Li-ion conductivity of 1 mS cm−1 at 80 °C was comparable to conventional sintering, but lower than for Field-Assisted Sintering Technique/Spark Plasma Sintering.

Abstract:Solid-state lithium metal batteries (LMBs) using nonflammable solid electrolytes (SEs) are considered to be the new generation of energy storage devices with high energy density and good safety. However, many challenges, such as insufficient room-temperature ionic conductivity of SEs and tremendous electrode-electrolyte interfacial impedance, hinder the commercialization of solid-state LMBs. Here, we reported a novel composite solid elec-trolyte (CSE), consisting of a three-dimensional (3D) Li6.25Ga0.25La3Zr2O12 (LLZO) nanoparticle-based framework and filled tripropylene gycol diacrylate (TPGDA)-based gel electrolytes, in which the gel electrolytes are pre-pared by in situ polymerization of the TPGDA monomer in the condition of liquid electrolyte. Owing to the high content of LLZO powder and PVDF binder, the nonflammable CSE shows superior thermal stability and outstanding mechanical property. Moreover, the CSE exhibits high room-temperature ionic conductivity (1.66 x 10-3 S center dot cm- 1) due to the large amount of liquid electrolyte loaded in the 3D framework. Besides, in-situ gel electrolytes facilitate the interfacial contact between electrolyte and lithium anode. Therefore, the LiFePO4/CSE/ Li cell exhibits excellent cycling stability at room temperature, delivering a capacity retention ratio of 86.5% after 350 cycles at 1 C. This work can provide guidance in designing CSEs for high-performance lithium metal batteries.
Immobilizing Ceramic Electrolyte Particles into a Gel Matrix Formed In Situ for Stable Li-Metal Batteries

Abstract:Hybrid solid/gel electrolytes (SGEs) have generated much research attentions because of their capability to suppress Li dendrite growth and improve battery safety. However, the interfacial compatibility of the electrode/electrolyte or polymer/inorganic ceramics within hybrid electrolytes remains challenging for practical applications. Herein, an SGE is fabricated by confining ceramic particles (Li7La3Zr2O12; LLZO) into in situ formed tetraethylene glycol dimethyl ether (G4)-based gel electrolytes within assembled cells. A hierarchical layered structure is formed when LLZO settles near the Li anode within the liquid electrolyte during the gradual gelatinization process. Good interfacial compatibility is obtained from good contact with the liquid G4 component. The LLZO layer also serves as an ionic sieve to redistribute the Li deposition. This SGE endows stable Li stripping/plating cycling over 800 h at 0.5 mA/cm2 (60 °C). Moreover, Li-metal batteries with an SGE coupled with LiFePO4 and an air cathode both exhibit superior cycling performance. Abstract:The polymer-ceramic composite electrolyte is considered as one of promising electrolytes for solid-state battery. However, in previous research, ceramic particles are usually dispersed in polymer matrix and could not form continuous Li + conductive channels. The agglomeration of ceramic particles could also lead to low ionic conductivity and poor interfacial electrode/electrolyte contact. In this paper, self-supported porous Li 6.4 La 3 Zr 1.4 Ta 0.6 O 12 (LLZTO) electrolyte is synthesized by gelcasting process, which possesses three-dimensional (3D) interconnected pore channels and relatively high strength. The 1,3-dioxolane (DOL) could penetrate into the porous LLZTO framework for its excellent fluidity. The subsequent in situ polymerization process by thermal treatment could completely fill the internal pores and improve the interfacial contact with electrode. The resulting 3D composite electrolyte with dual continuous Li + transport channels in ceramic and polymer components exhibits high ionic conductivity of 2.8 × 10 –4 S·cm −1 at room temperature and low Li/electrolyte interfacial resistance of 94 Ω·cm 2 at 40 °C. The corresponding Li/Li symmetric cell delivers stable voltage profiles for over 600 h under 0.1 and 0.2 mA·cm −2 . The solid-state Li/LiFePO 4 battery shows superior rate and cycling performance under 0.1C and 0.2C. This work guides the preparation of composite electrolyte with dual continuous Li + conductive paths as well as high ceramic ratio and interface modification strategy for solid-state Li metal battery.

Abstract:This research investigates challenges associated with gelation in Li 6.4 La 3 Zr 1.4 Ta 0.6 O 12 (LLZTO) slurry preparation for solid-state Li-ion batteries. Gelation arises from a cross-linking reaction between the sintering aid, boron oxide (B 2 O 3 ), and the poly(vinyl butyral) (PVB) binder. With increasing B 2 O 3 content, LLZTO slurry viscosity dramatically rises, resulting in unsuitable solid-like behavior for tape casting. The alkaline nature of LLZTO powder intensifies cross-linking, a phenomenon confirmed through boron-11 nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy. To mitigate gelation, diol compounds, such as ethylene glycol, are introduced to deactivate B 2 O 3 -PVB cross-linking, with selection guided by support from density functional theory-based simulations.

Abstract:Solid-state lithium batteries have advantages of high energy density and usage safety and are considered as promising next-generation power sources. Among them, the garnet-type oxide electrolyte has become a widely studied inorganic electrolyte due to its high ionic conductivity and chemical stability. In this paper, nanoscale Y2O3 (NYO) particles are introduced as sintering aids for fabricating Ta-doped Li7La3Zr2O12 (LLZTO) ceramics, and the sintering effects of various NYO ratios on the properties of LLZTO are investigated. Among the samples, the LLZTO-5%NYO sample exhibits the highest ionic conductivity (7.39 × 10-4 S cm-1) and the lowest activation energy (0.17 eV). At various current densities, the polarization voltage of LLZTO-5%NYO is also the lowest without a short circuit. The full cells of LFP|LLZTO-5%NYO|Li exhibit a high capacity of 163.9 mA h g-1 with a high initial coulombic efficiency of 97.4%, and the capacity retention rate is up to 98.1% after 50 cycles. This work may inspire the development of analogous solid-state electrolytes and lithium batteries.

Abstract:Cubic Li-Garnet (c-Li7La3Zr2O12, c-LLZO) is a promising solid electrolyte, however, it is very hard to prepare highly densified LLZO ceramics under air ambient condition. In this work, sintering in the presence of, but without direct contact with, “mother powder” as a lithium-compound vapor control strategy has been proposed. The existence of volatile Lithium compounds (mainly Li2O gas) are proved and the impact of the Li2O(g) atmosphere on LLZO sintering has been elucidated. At a low level, ceramics shows all trans-granular fracture microstructure; while at a high level, abnormal grain growth (AGG) occurs. Microstructure evolution under these two sintering conditions is evaluated, where a very rapid densification speed is observed for LLZO. A gas-liquid-solid sintering mechanism is proposed, where Li2O gas condenses to liquids on the surfaces of LLZO grains to promote the solid material transportation. Thence, the sintering duration for high ionic conductive Ta doped LLZO ceramics can be greatly slashed to 30 min with low-cost conventional solid-state reaction and air ambient sintering techniques. In addition, this work provides a universal and efficient strategy for production of high ionic conductive Ta-LLZO ceramics with relative densities of 97–98%, conductivities of ~1 × 10−3 S cm−1 at 25 °C, critical current density of 0.9 mA cm−2 and highly-densified microstructure, which is fundamental for further researches on solid-state batteries.

Abstract:In this research article, the facile intermediate‐stage sintering method of porous (≈40% of open porosity, mean pore size of 2.5 μm) Li7La3Zr2O12 membranes with thicknesses (≈50 μm) maximally close to those required for achieving high gravimetric and volumetric energy densities of Li‐garnet solid‐state batteries, is reported. While significant progress has been achieved in the field of Li‐garnet solid‐state batteries, their further development, is hindered by the formation of cavities at the Li7La3Zr2O12 (LLZO)/Li interface at practically relevant current densities and areal capacities exceeding 1 mA cm−2 and 1 mAh cm−2. As a result, the cells exhibit limited cycling stability due to the inhomogeneous distribution of the applied current density, and therefore, the formation of Li dendrites. Another aspect of high importance is associated with the development of the fabrication methodology of thin LLZO electrolytes for achieving the high energy density of Li‐garnet solid‐state batteries. To contribute to these two challenging problems, in this work, a facile intermediate‐stage sintering method of 50‐μm thin and porous LLZO membranes with a mean pore size of 2.5 μm is presented. The employment of such porous LLZO membranes not only provides an effective means of mitigating the formation of voids at the LLZO/Li interface due to the increased LLZO/Li surface area, but also maximizes achievable energy densities. It is demonstrated that fabricated porous LLZO membranes exhibit long cycling stability of over 1480 h at a current density of 0.5 mA cm−2.

Abstract:A quasi-solid-state electrolyte (QSSE) based on the hierarchical porous metal-organic framework (MOF) materials mixed with inorganic fillers Zeolite Socony Mobil-5 (ZSM-5) have been prepared for application of lithium ion battery, exhibiting effective storage and transportation capacity for lithium ions. The as -pre-pared lithium ion transports material demonstrated high ion conductivity (Sigma = 1.51 x10-3 S/cm) and Li+ transference number (tLi+ = 0.80). Additionally, the electrolyte displays a wide electrochemical window with excellent electrochemical stability. Importantly, the lithium ion battery of LiFePO4 as the cathode has ex-cellent rate capability and cycle durability, showing a new prospect of high-performance lithium-ion bat-teries.(c) 2022 Elsevier B.V.
