Abstract:Online reviews like product reviews are important references for a potential user to learn the basic information of a product. However, some reviewers were rewarded for writing the reviews, which may impact the objectiveness of the reviews. But on the other hand, the reviews written by reviewers who weren't rewarded could be in low quality. Research study already showed incentivized reviewers may give a higher overall score than non-incentivized reviewers (or called organic) do, but does that pattern also apply to review content? In this paper, a quantitative comparison study is conducted to investigate the differences between the incentivized reviews and organic reviews of software products. Four pairs of comparison including overall score, sentiment preference, correlation, and similarity are performed by using statistical and text mining methods. The results show there is no statistically significant difference between the incentive reviews and organic reviews except the sentiment of total, “Problems and Benefits” and “Summary” part of a review text. The results are unexpected since the reviews collected from the website for reviewing software product already filtered low quality reviews. It demonstrates that the incentivized action might not be necessary to produce biased reviews and it may be an effective way to attract more reviews since the website include more than 75% incentivized reviews. The paper also analyzed the possible reasons from the feature of reviewers' position in a company, a review's indicator, and reviewers' common actions. Based on the analysis, this study suggests that a potential user may pay attention to some quality dimensions of a review to mitigate the bias risk from the reviews.

Abstract:When reviewers write online reviews, they differ in the focus of their attention: some focus on their own experiences, whereas some direct their attention to others—prospective consumers who may read the reviews in the future. This paper explores how, why, and when reviewers’ attentional focus can influence the helpfulness evaluation of reviews beyond the impact of substantive review content. Drawing on the attentional focus and persuasion literatures, we develop a theoretical model proposing that reviewers’ attentional focus may influence consumers’ perception of review helpfulness through opposing processes, and that its overall effect is contingent on the review’s two-sidedness. Results of one archival analysis and five controlled experiments provide consistent support for our hypotheses. This work challenges the predominant view of the positive impact of other-focus (vs. self-focus), explores the interpersonal impact of a reviewer’s attentional focus on prospective consumers who are total strangers, and reveals an important, context-specific boundary condition.

Abstract:[Purposes] This paper aims to explore the strategies to achieve the effective peer review.[Methods] Based on advanced experience and measures taken by foreign journals,the problems existing in peer review of academics journals published in China were analyzed and improvement measures from the top level design were put forward.[Findings] Concrete measures include policy support and protection,comprehensive evaluation experts teams,optimized review patterns and sound evaluation and feedback systems.[Conclusions] Four kinds of measures mentioned above contribute to implementing the effective role of peer review in academic supervision and checks.

Abstract:PurposeThis study aims to investigate how prior reviews posted by other consumers affect subsequent consumers’ evaluations and to what extent the review temporal distance can increase or reduce the social influence of prior reviews. In this study’s restaurant context, review temporal distance refers to the duration between dining time and review time of a dining experience.Design/methodology/approachThe data of paired online restaurant reservations and reviews are analyzed using Ordered Logit Model. Two robustness checks are conducted to test the stability of the main estimation results.FindingsThe empirical results demonstrate that consumers’ restaurant evaluation is socially influenced by both the prior average review rating and number of prior reviews; review temporal distance has a direct negative effect on consumers’ restaurant evaluation; and review temporal distance increases the social influence of prior reviews.Practical implicationsThis study suggests that online review matters. Both restaurants and the online review platforms should encourage consumers to share their experiences and post online reviews immediately after their consumption.Originality/valueThe study contributes to the literature on electronic word-of-mouth, social influence and psychological distance. First, the bi-directional nature of social influence on electronic word-of-mouth for experience-oriented product is documented. Second, for the first time, this study examines how review temporal distance could affect the social influence on consumers’ restaurant evaluation.

Abstract:Purpose - Websites have their own features in aspect preference (e.g. the relative importance platforms place on product aspects in product evaluation). The purpose of this paper is to capture characteristics of different book reviews on aspect preferences by opinion mining techniques. Design/methodology/approach - The authors employ two indicators for identifying aspect preferences, and propose a method for quantifying overall differences of reviews on aspect preferences through three dimensions: aspect awareness, aspect satisfaction and comprehensive value. Findings - The results show that book reviews on e-commerce websites contain information about external aspects of a book (e.g. hardcover), while those on social network websites pay more attention to content-related aspects of the book (e.g. stories). These results indicate that aspect preferences of reviews vary from platforms and make it hard to evaluate book comprehensively based on single-source data. Online book reviews from a wide range of sources can assess book impact from multiple perspectives and dimensions. Practical implications - In order to illustrate the value of the authors' method, the authors show book impact assessment based on multi-source data as an application of these difference analyses. Furthermore, the authors present an example of a book promotion to provide customized marketing services for different user clusters. Originality/value - This study investigates the influence of different data sources on book evaluation from the content of book reviews. The authors also showcase potential applications of these analyses in book impact assessment.

Abstract:Purpose Most papers and books on conducting literature reviews primarily emphasize achieving technical quality, ensuring reproducibility and validating results. Notwithstanding the need for technical excellence, there is also a need for relevance. The purpose of this study is to address that need and offer practical and constructive suggestions for enhancing the meaningful contribution of a literature review, thereby increasing its impact and relevance for publication. Design/methodology/approach In this conceptual paper, the authors explore strategies to enhance the relevance and contribution of a literature review. By clarifying the needs of diverse audiences and the principles of generating new insights, the authors provide a broad range of options without being prescriptive. Recognizing that every literature review is unique, this paper contrasts various approaches to offer flexible and adaptable guidance. Findings Literature reviews can be enjoyable to read and write, offering a wide range of substantial contributions that meet the expectations of readers and journal editors. This paper offers practical suggestions for prospective authors to make their reviews more relevant, invaluable and engaging, and summarizes these suggestions in a comprehensive checklist. Research limitations/implications The paper is not exhaustive but rather complements prevalent literature review methodologies. Originality/value Existing literature offers limited guidance on enhancing a review's contribution to science, academic inquiry and society. This paper fills that gap by providing both academic considerations and practical recommendations, drawing on the author's extensive experience in reviewing and conducting literature reviews.

Abstract:In the medical sciences, the importance of review articles is rising. When clinicians want to update their knowledge and generate guidelines about a topic, they frequently use reviews as a starting point. The value of a review is associated with what has been done, what has been found and how these findings are presented. Before asking 'how,' the question of 'why' is more important when starting to write a review. The main and fundamental purpose of writing a review is to create a readable synthesis of the best resources available in the literature for an important research question or a current area of research. Although the idea of writing a review is attractive, it is important to spend time identifying the important questions. Good review methods are critical because they provide an unbiased point of view for the reader regarding the current literature. There is a consensus that a review should be written in a systematic fashion, a notion that is usually followed. In a systematic review with a focused question, the research methods must be clearly described. A 'methodological filter' is the best method for identifying the best working style for a research question, and this method reduces the workload when surveying the literature. An essential part of the review process is differentiating good research from bad and leaning on the results of the better studies. The ideal way to synthesize studies is to perform a meta-analysis. In conclusion, when writing a review, it is best to clearly focus on fixed ideas, to use a procedural and critical approach to the literature and to express your findings in an attractive way.

Abstract:Review length and readability, are cognitive dispositions of reviews supposed to reflect diagnostic content and lead to favorable evaluation of review helpfulness. However, underlying these two cognitive dispositions of reviews, are discrepancies that make it difficult for a helpful review to simultaneously satisfy both of them. To resolve the discrepancies, this present study, drawn on cognitive tuning theory, proposes and validates the intertwining effect of cognitive dispositions (length and readability) and affective dispositions (joy and anger expression) in judging review helpfulness. Based on analysis of heterogeneous hotel review data, our findings indicate joy expression in reviews, decreased the positive impact of review length on review helpfulness, while enhancing the positive impact of review readability on helpfulness. Anger expression in reviews, shows reverse effects, enhancing the positive impact of review length on helpfulness. Our findings contribute to an in-depth understanding of review characteristics and review helpfulness judgment.

Abstract:Review articles aim to give an overview of the current scientific knowledge on a specific topic and are an important element of evidence-based medicine. Technically, review articles do not generate new data, but rather identify, structure, evaluate and summarize the evidence of existing primary research studies.<a class="ref showRefEvent2" href="#">1</a> While narrative review articles usually apply a less stringent methodology and present a broader scope of a topic, systematic reviews aim to answer precisely a specific scientific question by synthesizing the available evidence qualitatively and, whenever possible, quantitatively as meta-analyses, which requires profound methodological knowledge and skills in statistics. Narrative and systematic elements (with or without meta-analysis) can also be combined in one article.<a class="ref showRefEvent2" href="#">2</a> In any case, review articles tend to be of high quality, basically for two reasons: first, since they reach out to a broader audience and their visibility is more long-lasting compared with fast-moving original studies, authors and publishers want to ensure they do not lose their reputation. And second, they are usually written by either experts of a certain field or by researchers who are specifically dedicated to, and have a high level of expertise in, conducting systematic reviews and meta-analyses. At the same time, writing a review article comes with a considerable burden of responsibility because they shape future research.<a class="ref showRefEvent2" href="#">1</a> For instance, where evidence is scarce, review articles can create awareness of an unmet need to start up new projects. In other fields, evidence can be so abundant that it has become nearly impossible for researchers to read and appraise all available studies, and review articles are a welcomed source to understand current evidence with a reasonable effort of time.

Abstract:AbstractOur purpose for this article is to provide suggestions on how to get your high quality research published from the perspectives of reviewers. First, good writing is good thinking, and you are much more likely to succeed when you combine good writing with sound research. We then offer an eight-step method of reviewing that may help the author better understand how to present and understand the research. Next, we describe ways to identify high quality journals, including acceptance rates, impact factor, Eigenfactors, and Article Influence scores. In the following section, we address common criteria used to rate articles, possible decisions, and how to revise the manuscript in response to reviewers’ comments. We present an example table of responses to reviewers’ critiques. We conclude with further advice for more novice researchers. Become a reviewer to help you better understand the process and peers’ expectations. Highlight the caliber of your research by citing journal metrics when being considered for promotion or hiring. Finally, frame negative reviews as an opportunity to improve your work and keep trying to publish your research despite criticisms.
