Abstract:Coal-based Allam cycle is an advanced low-carbon and efficient power cycle that uses syngas produced by coal gasification to drive the semi-closed supercritical CO 2 cycle for electric power generation. To improve the thermodynamic and economic performance, a novel coal-based Allam cycle coupled to CO 2 gasification is proposed. Compared to the reference system, the steam for gasification is eliminated and the mole fraction of H 2 within the raw syngas is reduced, which could effectively decrease the moisture fraction of the combustion flue gas and give enough margin to intensify heat integration. Thereby, more process heat has been saved to drive the efficient supercritical CO 2 cycle and the raw syngas cooling heat is further recovered by the main recuperator. Results show that the net efficiency of the novel system soars to 43.99%, which is enhanced by 0.67% points. Moreover, the exergy efficiency increases by 0.65% points with the total exergy destruction and loss reduced by 1.23%. In addition, the total plant investment (TPI) and the cost of electricity (COE) are reduced by 1.42% and 1.39%, respectively, which proves that the novel system is also superior for commercial application.

Abstract:The Allam cycle is a promising power cycle that could achieve 100% carbon capture as well as high efficiency. In order to further enhance system operating performance, here we propose a modified Allam cycle with an improved liquified natural gas (LNG) cold energy utilization method. The flow rate fluctuation of LNG is suppressed by variable speed adjustment of the air compressor, and the cold energy of LNG is transferred to liquid oxygen, which could implement a stable cold energy supply. The whole process is modeled including air separation unit and LNG supply path. Furthermore, the system thermodynamic and economic performance is evaluated through parametric analysis, and the proposed system superiority is highlighted by comparing with conventional Allam-LNG cycle. The results indicate that the system could achieve 70.93% of net thermal efficiency, 65.17% of electrical efficiency, and $403.63 million of net present value, which performs 5.76% and 6.48% enhancement of efficiency and 11% improvement of economic revenue. Moreover, the system off-design operation is assessed; 87% to 100% of compressor speed adjustment range is determined that could cope with −13% to 9% of LNG flow rate fluctuation.

Abstract:The Allam cycle is renowned for its high efficiency and low emissions in power generation, utilizing supercritical carbon dioxide as the working fluid. The regenerator, one of the key heat exchangers, plays a crucial role in the system. However, modeling the regenerator is challenging due to the presence of multiple pinch points. This study proposes a regenerator model that employs three multi-stream heat exchanger modules in Aspen Plus. A thermodynamic and economic analysis of the system was conducted and compared with a conventional system utilizing the two multi-stream heat exchanger modules. Simulation results show that the combustion chamber has the highest exergy loss in the system, accounting for 46.9% of the total exergy loss. The turbine is identified as the most capital-intensive component, representing 44.9 % of the total equipment investment. Furthermore, a sensitivity analysis was conducted on key parameters. The results indicate that under certain operating conditions, the heat provided by the air separation unit is insufficient to reduce the temperature difference at the hot outlet of the regenerator. Compared to the conventional Allam cycle system using the 2R model, the 2R model predicts deviations of up to 28.9 %. This proposed model provides a new approach for the efficient allocation of energy utilization in the multi-stream heat exchange process within the Allam cycle system.
Optimal Design and Thermodynamic Analysis on the Hydrogen Oxidation Reactor in a Combined Hydrogen Production and Power Generation System Based on Coal Gasification in Supercritical Water

Abstract:The novel power generation system based on coal gasification in supercritical water (SCW) holds great promise to meet the increasing energy demands in China, with less emissions in comparison to the traditional coal-fired power generation. The stable and complete oxidation of hydrogen occurring in the supercritical water oxidation (SCWO) reactor is paramount to the safety and overall energy efficiency of the system. In order to better understand and improve the performance of this reactor, optimal design and thermodynamic analysis were conducted using Aspen Plus. The outlet hydrogen concentration and the internal temperature of the reactor were taken as the two key indicators of the optimal design. The optimized results for the reactor were found to be the reactor diameter of 90 mm, axial length of 10.75 m, oxygen inlet number of 3 with the oxygen ratio of 11.0%/39.9%/49.1%, under the given inlet working fluid components and flow rates. The three-stage reactor design was confirmed to have good robustness when different types of coals are adopted for generating syngas. In addition, by analyzing the enthalpy and exergy flow distributions in the reactor, it was revealed that the total exergy destruction for the whole three-stage reactor is only about 6.29%, and that the exergy destruction is consistent with the oxidation process. These findings could be used as guidelines for the design and implementation of the SCWO reactor towards higher safety margin and energy efficiency for this new coal-boiled power generation technique. Abstract:In the research of a more efficient, less costly, more environmentally responsible and less technically difficult method for generating electrical power from coal, the Carried-heat Gasification Combined Cycle (CGCC) is introduced by Tsinghua University. The high efficiency cycle includes carried-heat partial gasification, compressed air heating in a fluidized bed immersed air heater followed by a combustor and the heat recovery of gas turbine exhaust used as the combustion air for the differential-velocity atmospheric circulating fluidized bed (DFBC). Superheat steam is raised in the DFBC boiler. The comparison of results identifies the causes of performance difference between eight cases. Features of the cycle ensure a high coal conversion efficiency within current state of the art.

Abstract:This paper proposes a modified Allam-Z cycle that uses chemical-looping combustion (CLC) instead of traditional combustion, called CLC-Allam cycle. Under the same cycle and components conditions, the electric efficiency of the CLC-Allam cycle is about 9.5 percentage points higher than the original Allam-Z cycle. The investigation of selecting oxygen carriers in the CLC-Allam cycle reveals that cupric oxide always provides the highest fuel conversion in the supercritical carbon dioxide (SCO2) atmosphere and is thus believed to be the best oxygen carrier among the five investigated metallic oxides. The subsequent analysis focuses on parametric sensitivity and shows that (1) the inlet temperature and isentropic efficiency of CO2 pump have little effect on cycle efficiency, beneficial to enhance the system robustness; (2) the isentropic efficiency of turbine and compressor has a more significant influence on the cycle electric efficiency than the pump; (3) an optimal SCO2 turbine inlet temperature exists for the CLC-Allam cycle and the oxygen carrier will not encounter sintering or melting problems under the optimal temperature.

Abstract:The Allam Cycle takes a novel approach to reducing emissions by employing oxy-combustion that utilizes carbon dioxide (CO2) working fluid, highly recuperated cycle. In this research, the main parts of the Allam cycle, including the combustion chamber, air separation unit, heat exchanger and cooling tower, have been simulated in Thermoflow software. This cycle is based on combustion using pure oxygen instead of ambient air and the working fluid of this cycle is carbon dioxide. According to the results of the validation part of the initial simulation, the efficiency of the supercritical carbon dioxide cycle with three cooling stages in the compression part (in non-optimal and initial state) is 54%, which is approximately 4% of the cycle efficiency. By reducing the inlet fluid pressure to the pump from 75.38 to 73.43 bar, the cycle efficiency increases from 53.9 to 54. According to the second part of the results, which shows the effect of combustion chamber temperature (in the range of 800–1300 °C) on cycle performance, by increasing the combustion chamber temperature from 800 to 1200 °C, the cycle efficiency increases from 44.61 to 61.38. Also, the highest efficiency of the Brayton cycle is obtained in the pressure ratio of 20, which is approximately equal to 38% for the cycle with real specifications, while the highest efficiency is obtained in the Allam cycle with a pressure ratio of 10, which is about 55%. Therefore, in addition to being able to absorb 100% of carbon dioxide, the Allam cycle has a much higher efficiency than the Brayton cycle.

Abstract:The Allam cycle is one of the most promising oxy-combustion systems and has attracted much attention from the energy industry. A novel layout of the Allam cycle, which combines a reheating configuration with the original Allam cycle, was proposed in the present study. The effects of key variables on the net cycle efficiency and net specific work of the new system were investigated. The Allam cycle with reheat was optimized to maximize the cycle efficiency and compared with other cycles. The results showed that the minimum cycle temperature and the outlet temperature of the second combustor have significant effects on the cycle performance, while the maximum cycle pressure has minimum effect on the cycle performance. The highest exergy destruction of the optimized cycle is contributed from the two combustors, which accounts for 25.42% of the total input exergy. The net efficiency of the optimized Allam cycle with reheat is up to 49.32%, a little higher than those of other oxy-combustion cycles and about 5 percentage points lower than that of the original Allam cycle. However, the net power output and net specific work are up to 904.6 MWe and 606.2 kJ/kg for this novel system, about 2.1 times and 2.2 times of those of the original Allam cycle, respectively.

Abstract:A novel partial gasification combined cycle (PGCC ) system integrating coal partial gasification, oxy-fuel combustion, combined cycle, and CO2 separation is proposed. The coal-CO2 partial gasification technology is introduced in the coal gasification unit, and the oxy-fuel combustion technology is employed in the char combustion unit and gas turbine (GT) unit. The thermodynamic and economic analysis of the proposed system is carried out, showing that both energy and exergy efficiency have an increasing/decreasing tendency when the recycled flue gas (RFG) ratio of char combustion and GT increase. When the RFG ratios of char combustion and GT are 0.43 and 0.34, energy and exergy efficiencies reach maximum values of 48.18 and 45.11%, respectively. The energy efficiency of the PGCC-Oxy system is higher than that of the integrated gasification combined cycle (IGCC)-Oxy system by approximately 3%. It can be concluded from the economic analysis that the total investment on the PGCCOxy system is 3272.71 million RMB, and the internal rate of return (IRR) and payback time is 8.07% and 12.38 years, respectively.

Abstract:This paper designs and studies a staged coal gasification coupled S–CO2 power cycle system. The three-stage pulverized coal gasifier of a coal gasification plant is used as the research object for basic research. The calculation is carried out in the Fluent software in a finite rate mode to make the results closer to reality. Through the analysis of the results, it is found that the structure of coal gasifier and coal gasification process have optimization space. By adding distributed nozzles and reflux plates, the effect of pulverized coal gasification is improved. In the process, adopt staged coal gasification to separate the decomposition of volatile matter and the gasification of coke, and the gasification agent is introduced under the optimum gasification agent ratio to enhance the efficiency of cold gas. In addition, this paper also carried out two local improvements and optimizations in the power cycle process. The first is to use the interstage heat of the compressor for thermochemical regeneration and S–CO2 power cycle. After the improvement and optimization, the exergy loss of the system and the consumption of heating coal have been reduced, and the net power generation efficiency of the system increased to 43.2%. The second is to improve the flue gas waste heat utilization system. A multi-split Brayton cycle replaces the steam Rankine cycle, and the cycle parameters are optimized. When the outlet pressure of the compressor is 28 MPa, the exergy efficiency of the bottom cycle is 41.9%. After all improvements are completed, the net efficiency of the whole system reaches 45.7%.

Abstract:To improve the coal utilization efficiency and cut down the carbon footprint, a novel zero carbon emission coal-based polygeneration system is proposed for methanol production and power generation, which innovatively integrates a direct-fired supercritical carbon dioxide cycle (Allam cycle) for carbon capture. The water–gas shift reaction and carbon dioxide separation process are removed in the methanol synthesis subsystem. The syngas generated by coal gasification is directly fed to the methanol reactor and the released syngas from the methanol synthesis unit is combusted with the pure oxygen to drive the Allam cycle for efficient power generation. Comparing with the individual methanol production system and coal-based Allam cycle, the carbon and hydrogen element footprints are changed, which can reduce the energy consumption for carbon capture, and the recovered heat from the hot raw syngas and methanol synthesis unit is utilized more efficiently by integration of the Allam cycle. The energy and exergy analyses of the proposed system have been performed using the developed models based on the mass and energy balance. Results show that the fuel saving ratio of the proposed system is 5.3% and the exergy destruction is reduced by 10.8%, comparing to the individual systems. In addition, the net power output of the proposed system is also 29.4% greater than that of the typical polygeneration system. The proposed concept might provide a new approach to efficient utilization of coal for methanol synthesis and power generation with nearly zero emission.

Abstract:The emission peak/carbon neutrality calls for significantly improved coal-fired power plants. Sustainability of the power plants is critical to meeting the net zero targets in 2050/2060. In this context, it is necessary to investigate the integration and conversion of the supercritical carbon dioxide coal-fired power cycle and the supercritical carbon dioxide energy storage cycle. In this work, the thermodynamic model and performance criteria are firstly presented. After comparison of the two cycles, a three-step strategy for the development of the power cycle is proposed and assessed. First step: when coal still plays an important role as a main energy resource, the integrated tri-compression coal-fired supercritical compressed carbon dioxide energy storage cycle has the highest round-trip efficiency of 56.37%. Second step: with the challenge in utilization of coal energy, a trade-off among the performance criteria must be struck in the integrated cycle with various heat sources. Third step: the adiabatic supercritical compressed carbon dioxide energy storage cycle is proposed, and a high round-trip efficiency of 72.34% is achieved in the split expansion cycle. The present research provides not only a new prospect of the conventional power plants but also design guidance for the supercritical carbon dioxide energy storage cycle.
Improved Design of Supercritical CO2 Brayton Cycle for Coal-Fired Power Plant

Abstract:As an advanced power cycle, supercritical CO2 (sCO(2)) Brayton cycle has been considered as a promising alternative of conventional steam Rankine cycle for coal-fired power plants. The sCO(2) power cycle must be improved to deal with coal-fired system integration constraints since coal-fired boiler is significantly different from nuclear and CSP heaters. The inlet temperature of the working fluid entering coal-fired boiler in sCO(2) cycle is much higher than that in steam cycle, as it can be preheated more sufficiently in recuperators. Hence, the exhaust heat of coal-fired boiler flue gas cannot be fully utilized itself. It is of great importance to study on how to make good use of the exhaust heat of flue gas. An in-house code of sCO(2) Brayton cycle tailored for coal-fired power plant was developed at first. Then, three improved cycle layouts for better utilization of the exhaust heat of flue gas were proposed, which were assessed in depth based on comprehensive analyses of both sCO(2) boiler and cycle layout. The improved cycle with a second split flow to the boiler was proved to be the most effective one. With parameters of 31MPa/600 degrees C/620 degrees C, the maximum net efficiency was improved from a based value of 45.96% to an optimized value of 50.71%. It was also higher than that of a state-of-the-art ultra-supercritical steam power plant with same paremeters (about 46%-47%). Finally, the effects of the second split flow ratio on net efficiency were analyzed, and the equations to calculate the optimal range of second split flow ratio was derived. (C) 2018 Elsevier Ltd. Abstract:For a coal fired power plant, a combined supercritical CO2 cycle (S-CO2) absorbs flue gas energy over entire temperature range. Because top/bottom cycles absorb high and moderate temperature flue gas energy respectively, there is an efficiency gap between the two cycles. To fill the efficiency gap, the overlap absorption of flue gas energy is proposed, using top cycle to absorb high temperature flue gas heat, but bottom cycle to absorb not only moderate temperature flue gas heat, but also a part of high temperature flue gas heat. The overlap energy absorption in a high temperature regime increases CO2 heat absorption temperature to improve bottom cycle efficiency. A four steps roadmap guides us to construct a combined cycle with RC + DRH as top cycle and RC + DRH + EAP as bottom cycle to reach the maximum efficiency limit, where RC, DRH and EAP represent the cycles of recompression, double-reheating and external air preheater, respectively. The components sharing among top/bottom cycles ensures simple system layout, and EAP recycles extra heat of bottom cycle to the system, keeping a smallest heat dissipation to environment. The net power efficiency reaches 47.99% at the main vapor parameters of 620 degrees C/30 MPa. The overlap energy utilization can be extended for other systems.
Preliminary Design Assessment of Supercritical CO2 Cycle for Commercial Scale Coal-Fired Power Plants

Abstract:The concept of the supercritical CO2 power cycle has been widely proved to be effective by previous studies. However, more specific system layout and key components design analysis is still imperative to demonstrate the technology feasibility of large scale utility. In the present paper the technology adaption of supercritical CO2 power cycle for commercial scale coal-fired power plant was evaluated in terms of both the whole thermodynamic cycle layout and the preliminary assessment of key components. The effect of several key factors such as turbine inlet parameters, compressor inlet parameters and two split flow ratios were analyzed by an in-house code for the purpose of optimization design of a 300 MW commercial scale coal-fired power plant. Furthermore, the preliminary design assessment of key components such as boiler, turbomachines and compact heat exchangers were performed to demonstrate the technology feasibility of commercial scale utility. The results showed that the proposed cycle can achieve 50.2% net efficiency. However, in order to achieve this high efficiency, the key components should be carefully designed to meet the high standard requirements and coal-fired system integration constraints: For boiler, split flow economizer is required to fully recover the flue gas residual energy with over 500 degrees C. A highly effective compact heat exchangers with pinch temperature as low as 5 degrees C are mandatory. The compressors and turbines are also required to achieve the high industry level with compressors efficiency of 89% and turbines efficiency of 94%.

Abstract:Carried-Heat Partial Gasification Combined cycle is a novel combined cycle which was proposed by Thermal Engineering Department of Tsinghua University in 1992. The idea of the system comes from the situation that the efficiency of the power plants in China is much lower than that of the advanced countries, but the coal consumption is much higher, which brings about the waste of primary energy resources and the pollution of the environment. With the deep study of the gasification technology, Coke Carried-Heat Gasification Coal-Fired Combined Cycle, as the improved system, came into birth in 1996 based on the partial gasification one. At the end of 1997, a new cycle scheme similar to IGCC was created. This paper focuses on several classes combined cycle put forward by Tsinghua University, depending on the plant configuration and carbon conversion, making the solution a viable and attractive option for efficient coal utilization.

Abstract:Replacing the steam Rankine cycle with the supercritical CO 2 Brayton cycle (sCO 2 cycle) has been demonstrated to be an effective way to improve the efficiency of oxy-coal power plants. The present work focuses on the optimal design of the sCO 2 oxy-coal circulating fluidized bed (CFB) power generation systems which so far has not received much attention in the research field. A novel triple recompression sCO 2 cycle and a new sCO 2 oxy-coal CFB boiler configuration with medium-temperature and high-temperature flue gas recirculation have been proposed and evaluated. With the novel boiler configuration and triple recompression cycle, the system efficiency can be increased by about 1.4% points in comparison to the basic system using the basic recompression cycle and the basic boiler configuration. The influences of the cycle minimum temperature, recuperator pinch temperature difference, furnace inlet oxygen concentration, flue gas recirculation flow distribution and coal itself on the sCO 2 oxy-coal CFB power generation system performances were thoroughly investigated. The results show that increasing the minimum cycle temperature and the recuperator pinch temperature difference reduces the system efficiency while increasing the oxygen concentration at the furnace inlet and reducing the proportion of the recirculating flue gas as the primary oxidizing gas can boost the system efficiency. Coal itself also has an impact on the system efficiency due to its properties affecting the cycle efficiency, boiler efficiency and auxiliary equipment power consumptions.

Abstract:Supercritical water gasification (SCWG) of coal is a new clean coal conversion technology. Due to the unique properties of supercritical water, SCWG has many advantages compared with other coal gasification technologies, such as higher gasification efficiency, higher H2 yield, and less NOX, CO2 and SOX emission. However, how to realize the complete gasification of coal in supercritical water at low temperature is a huge challenge. Through experimental and kinetic studies, it is found that temperature is a determining factor of SCWG of coal. There is no nitrogen-containing gas in gaseous products and H2S is the only sulfur-containing gas in gaseous products. The temperature for complete gasification can be reduced by using oxidant or catalyst. The molecular dynamics simulation shows that there is a virtuous cycle in the SCWG process of coal through the formation and extinction of H radical-rich water clusters. In addition to the challenges mentioned above, as a competitive and promising technology, there are still many other challenges to be solved for supercritical water gasification coal, such as corrosion problem of the SCWG reactor, high cost and system amplification method.
