Abstract:The water trap seal under the sanitary appliances is the primary defense against the ingress of foul gases and odors. However, research on air pressure variation in a horizontal pipe of a single-stack drainage system is very limited. Thus a physical model study was conducted to investigate the air pressure variation in a horizontal pipe. Four parameters were studied that affect the pressure variation; that is, water flow rate, inlet height, ventilation condition and outlet condition. When the top of the vertical drainage stack and the outlet were fully open to the atmosphere, the flow in the horizontal pipe changed from free surface flow to slug flow at certain times. The mean values and magnitudes of pressure fluctuation at measuring points on the horizontal pipe increased with Qw but decreased along the horizontal pipe. The inlet height had relatively small influence on the pressure variation. Three ventilation conditions; that is, top fully open, half open and sealed, were tested, and a choking flow was formed in the vertical drainage stack and the pressure in the horizontal pipe decreased under the top sealed condition. Three outlet conditions; that is, outlet fully open, half submerged and fully submerged, were tested. The pressure in the horizontal pipe increased significantly under the outlet fully-submerged condition, which should be avoided in the actual operation by careful designing.
Analysis on Long-Term Performance of Capillary-Barrier Cover with Unsaturated Drainage Layer

Abstract:Outdoor model test was carried out for two years in humid area of China in order to study the long-term performance of the capillary-barrier cover with an unsaturated drainage layer (UDL). The size of model was 2.0 m (length) ×1.0 m (width) ×0.55 m (thickness); meanwhile, the slope rate and gradient were 1∶3 and 18.4° , respectively. From top to bottom, the structural profiles were vegetation growth layer (15 cm), silt layer (20 cm), sand layer (10 cm) and gravel layer (10 cm).The monitoring results show that: with the annual rainfall of 3 448.4 mm, the percolation is 2.62 mm, which is in line with the impervious standard of soil cover layer in humid climate zone of North America. Lateral diversion is 581.77 mm, which accounts for 16.87% of the cumulative rainfall and the lateral diversion effect is obvious. From April to November in humid area of China, the three peaks of temperature, rainfall and evapotranspiration coincide every year. The favorable climatic conditions in the same period of rain and heat, and the lateral diversion of UDL, effectively control the percolation. The continuous heavy rainfall from June to September is high risk to percolation meteorological event which is a controlled meteorological condition for seepage prevention design. From December to March of next year with scarce rainfall and weak evapotranspiration, the lateral diversion effect is obvious and avoid to percolation. The capillary barrier cover with unsaturated drainage layer is made up of silt, sand and gravel. Swelling, shrinkage and cracking are not obvious.
Testbed Hardware Design to Collect Data for Underground PVC Water Pipe Crack Detection: Challenges and Solutions

Abstract:A premature crack is a significant indicator for early failure detection for underground polyvinyl chloride (PVC) water pipes. Using an array of strain gauges mounted on a pipe surface to monitor the strain of adjacent areas of a premature crack is a novel technology that has not been explored. To reduce the risks and up-front investments, we need a testbed to investigate, verify, and validate the innovative technology. However, establishing such a pipe monitoring testbed that covers completely realistic underground situations is challenging. The main reason lies in three main challenges: (i) mimicking the natural changes of water flowing in pipes; (ii) identifying the proper placement of strain gauges and detectable crack sizes; (iii) simulating the crucial underground conditions such as temperature and external stress. To this end, in this paper, we present a testbed to get more insights into the effects of different crack types on the pressure-strain characteristic in realistic conditions. In particular, we use pressure meters and water pumps to control the water flow (for challenge (i)); deploy various strain gauges types and induce cracks with different sizes (for challenge (ii)); fill the pipe with water at various temperatures and underground-like external stress (for challenge (iii)); Analyzing experimental results reveals useful hints for designing a realistic testbed, including but not limited to, the required distance among strain gauges, the influence of temperature and pipe axial stress. The dataset and analytic results of this work would provide more insights into how to design a realistic testbed for underground PVC water pipe crack detection.

Abstract:This paper designs and builds a stormwater pipe-river/channel experimental system at the first attempt to observe hydraulic dynamics between pipe flow and downstream water levels under different steady state conditions. In addition, a three-dimensional (3D) model is developed to facilitate the understanding of this complex hydraulic interaction, and the reliability of a widely used one-dimensional (1D) model is first investigated. Experiment and simulation results show that (1) a high downstream water level can increase pipe flow capacity at the early stage, and the pipe flow is followed by a slightly downward trend and finally rapidly decreased, (2) pipe flows exhibit complex behaviors during the transition from nonfull to full pipe flow by altering flow area and velocity, and (3) the observed flows are significantly lower than those from the 1D model for the nonfull pipe flow scenario. This study offers insights to the underlying complex hydraulic properties between pipe flows and downstream water levels, and also shows that the 1D model is insufficient to reveal such an interaction process, which may underestimate the urban flooding risk.

Case Studies in Construction Materials

Abstract:The un-plasticized polyvinyl chloride (UPVC) is increasingly used in the construction industry because of its superior properties, particularly in greenhouses with UPVC as the skeleton. This study investigated the bearing capacities of UPVC pipes under axial compression. Eighteen UPVC pipe specimens with length-to-diameter ratios ranging from 24 to 45 were tested under axial compression. The failure modes and buckling resistances of the specimens were analysed. A finite element (FE) model was established to simulate the compressive behaviour of UPVC pipes, and the FE predictions were verified against the experimental results. Subsequently, extensive parametric studies were performed to analyse the effects of the diameter-to-thickness ratio, yield strength, and geometric imperfections on the overall stability of UPVC pipes under axial compression. The experimental and FE results were compared with the buckling curves obtained from the design codes for metallic material columns. Based on the test data and parametric analysis, a formulation of the buckling curves for UPVC pipes was proposed to predict the buckling performance of UPVC pipes better. These findings provide a basis for studying the mechanical performance of UPVC pipes subjected to axial compressive loading.

The main purpose is to effectively prevent fire hazards, and to conduct fire control in a timely manner when a fire accident occurs suddenly. The related design is very critical. Requires relevant workers to attach great importance to it, strengthen the design of upgrading water supply and drainage fire-fighting facilities, and strictly control the construction quality to ensure the safety of residents’ lives and property. Therefore, the article integrates the actual situation of the construction project, focuses on explaining the problems that should be paid attention to in the water supply and drainage and fire protection design work of the building, and proposes effective measures to control the construction quality, hoping to provide some help to relevant workers.

Abstract:<p>The selection of pipe of the building water supply and drainage system in buildings is important for energy conservation. In the past, the building designer mainly considered the use performance and one-time cost of pipes in building water supply and drainage system but ignored the differences in resources, energy consumption and pollutant emissions in the whole life cycle of different pipes. This paper combines the life cycle assessment with the analytic hierarchy process to analyze the energy consumption, resource consumption and its impact on the environment of different pipes in the building water supply and drainage system. The results showed that the energy consumption of PVC-U pipe in the building water supply system could be reduced by 86% and 91% compared with that of galvanized steel pipe and copper pipe, and the reduction value in the drainage system was about 86%.Galvanized steel pipes, copper pipes, and cast iron pipes are approximately 7.3 to 11.3 times larger than PVC-U pipes in a single indicator for comprehensive environmental impact assessment. This study shows that replacing other metal pipes with PVC-U can significantly reduce the environmental impact, which also implies the importance of life cycle assessment in the design of building pipes.</p>

Abstract:Building drainage system connects the indoor environment with outdoor drainage pipes.In the system,the inefficiency of sink traps and floor gully traps is one of the major causes of indoor environment pollution.In this study,the constant flow test method was used to explore the correlation between pressures measured at the sink trap and the horizontal drainpipe,and significant relationship was found.The average pressure and the maximum positive and negative pressures measured at sink traps could be used to estimate the corresponding pressures at the horizontal drainpipe.Based on the test resuits,preliminary causes were found for sewer smells,and could contribute to the further study of the "on-site detection technology for existing building drainage system".

Abstract:Buried pipes are used mainly for water supply and drainage besides many other applications such as oil, liquefied natural gas, coal slurries and mine tailings. The pipes used may be rigid (reinforced concrete, vitrified clay and ductile iron) or flexible (Steel, UPVC, aluminium, Fiber glass and High-density polyethylene) although the distinction between them is blurring. Flexible pipe design is governed by deflection or buckling. UPVC pipes are preferred due to light weight, long term chemical stability and cost efficiency. This project aims to study the load deformation behaviour of the buried pipe and stress variation across the cross section of the pipe under static loading along with the influence of depth of embedment, density of backfill on the deformation and stresses in pipe and the deformation behaviour of buried pipe when soil is reinforced with geogrid reinforcement and evaluate the structural performance of the pipe.

Abstract:Because of the existence of confined water at the bottom of the deep foundation pit soil, when the weight of impervious soil above cannot balance with hydraulic head, improper construction method can easily lead to piping, the instability of foundation pit enclosures and many other problems. In this paper, many risk sources related confined water are analyzed and many specific requirements are put forward for survey, design and construction. Because the foundation pit is near the river and there are penetration channels between confined water and river water, so the change of river water level will cause the rise or fall of confined water head. In view of the design head was reference the change of groundwater level in nearly one year, not considering the head changes throughout the years, which become the hidden danger caused accident. In the end, the river water level rising during construction, confined water pressure exceeded expectations and caused the piping. After the accident, water channel was soon clogged. And then concrete was poured into soil at the bottom of foundation pit. The soil property improved and thickness of impervious soil increased significantly. Piping problem was resolved and the project was completed safety. Grouting method is an effective way to ensure foundation pit excavation safety when confined water head is larger. Research in this paper has a strong guiding role in controlling risk of the pressure water during design and construction, especially engineering near river or ocean.

Abstract:A new vacuum drainage technology for sewage interception in old urban districts was developed based on engineering practice,and the evaluation of plastic pipes for vacuum sewage interception was carried out using value analysis method.Firstly,based on the investigation of actual application of plastic pipes and combined with the characteristics of sewage from old urban districts,the experimental research on plastic pipes for vacuum sewage interception was conducted in three aspects of abrasion resistance,corrosion resistance and anti-negative pressure.Secondly,the function value coefficients of plastic pipes were calculated.Thirdly,the price coefficients of plastic pipes were calculated through the quoted price from manufacturers.Finally,the comprehensive evaluation of common plastic pipes was carried out based on the value analysis method.According to the analysis,among the different plastic pipes,UPVC pipe has the highest index value and is the best choice for practical application.

Abstract:<p>To solve the frost heave failure of water pipelines in winter, studying the frost heave failure mechanism of water pipes is a critical issue for ensuring the safety and reliability of field irrigation and urban water supply. This paper is based on the investigation of the current polypropylene random copolymer (PPR) pipe frost heaves in residential buildings. According to theory analysis and model testing, the frost heave failure mechanism of the PPR water pipe is studied systematically. The formula of ice expansion pressure was derived based on ASTM E28-02 standard and related mechanical theories. Then the theory of PPR pipe anti-frost heave failure was proposed. The pipe thickness can be determined from the proposed theory, and the selection criteria of the PPR pipe was also provided for engineering application. Theoretical calculations and frost heave testing results showed that it is more economical and reasonable to choose S4 series PPR water pipes by comprehensively considering the factors of pipe life cycle and cost.</p>

Abstract:In recent years, the concept transition from fail-safe to safe-to-fail makes the application of resilience analysis popular in urban drainage systems (UDSs) with various implications and quantifications. However, most existing definitions of UDSs resilience are confined to the severity of flooding, while uncertainties from climate change and urbanization are not considered. In this research, we take into account the functional variety, topological complexity, and disturbance randomness of UDSs and define a new formula of resilience based on three parts of system severity, i.e. social severity affected by urban flooding, environmental severity caused by sewer overflow, and technological severity considering the safe operation of downstream facilities. A case study in Kunming, China is designed to compare the effect of green and grey infrastructure strategies on the enhancement of system resilience together with their costs. Different system configurations with green roofs, permeable pavement and storage tanks are compared by scenario analysis with full consideration of future uncertainties induced by urbanization and climate change. The research contributes to the development of sustainability assessment of urban drainage system with consideration of the resilience of green and grey infrastructure under future change. Finding the response measures with high adaptation across a variety of future scenarios is crucial to establish sustainable urban drainage system in a long term.

Abstract:Urban drainage pipeline systems collect and transport domestic sewage, industrial wastewater, and rainwater. They are important components of urban infrastructure. The quality of drainage facilities directly determines the level of urban development and affects the urban landscape and sanitary environment. In recent years, however, the phenomenon of "attaching importance to construction, despising management and maintenance" has prevailed in China's urban drainage pipeline network. The problems such as structural damage, corrosion, and blockage of the sewage pipelines are becoming increasingly prominent in China, causing a lot of operational challenges such as direct discharge of sewage, backward irrigation of river and lake water, infiltration of external water, and overflow pollution. To comprehensively acquire these information about China's urban drainage pipeline network, this paper reviews current status of construction, operation, management and maintenance, existent problems, and coping strategy of the sewage pipelines. Finally, future directions are also discussed in detail for rational construction and maintenance of sewage pipelines.
