Abstract:In calculating deflection of composite beams,the Chinese Code for design of steel structures GB 50017-2003 uses a reduced bending rigidity to consider the effect of slip at the steel-concrete interface of a composite beam. An abnormality appears in the formula for the reduced rigidity:as the number of studs increases,the calculated rigidity decreases sometimes. This paper proposes a new expression for the reduced bending rigidity. A coefficient representing the degree of the composite action between concrete and steel is introduced. Deflection of composite beams is solved using the bending theory for composite beams,in which the effect of slip is exactly included. A simplified equation for the reduced stiffness is proposed. Slip stiffness of the interface is discussed and formulae are proposed depending on the stress level of the stud. Comparison with available tests is carried out,and better correlation is found for the proposed equation. Compared with the code equation,the proposed formula is simpler,easier to use,and has a more clear physical meaning.

Abstract:This paper presented an analysis of the interactive relations between axial forces and biaxial bending moments at the state of plastic hinges.A simplified method was proposed to determine the interactive surfaces by a self-compiled simple computer program. Examples were presented for square and rectangular boxes filled with concrete, and simplified equations were proposed to calculate their sectional load-carrying capacity.For circular pipe filled with concrete, derivation was carried out and it was found that the equations proposed for rectangular box were also applicable for circular CFT columns.
Stiffness and Deflection of Steel–Concrete Composite Beams under Negative Bending

Abstract:Compared with simply supported beams, continuous steel-concrete composite beams have many advantages such as higher span/depth ratio, less deflection, and higher fundamental frequency of vibration due to its higher stiffness. However, in negative bending regions near interior supports, tension in concrete is unfavorable and a complicated issue, which deserves a special study. In this paper, a mechanics model based on elastic theory was established to investigate the stiffness of composite beams in negative bending regions by considering slips at the steel beam-concrete slab interface and concrete-reinforcement interface. In order to validate this approach, a test of three composite beams with profiled sheeting under negative bending was conducted. Meanwhile, a three-dimensional nonlinear finite element (FE) analysis was conducted to investigate the general behavior of the tested specimens. In addition, a comparative analysis between results derived from the analytical model, laboratory test, and FE analysis was performed. The results show that slip always exists for composite beams under negative bending even with complete shear connection (full composite action) between the steel and concrete components. The slip effect results in an additional curvature of beam bending and reduces the section stiffness by 10-20% compared with that of a beam without any slip in serviceability condition. This reduction should be considered in designing process especially for cantilever beams. Formulae under other loading cases and boundary conditions were also proposed. The results can serve as a basis for further study on stiffness of continuous steel-concrete composite beams and can directly be used for the deflection calculation of cantilever beams.

Abstract:In this paper, a theory is developed for analysis of steel-concrete composite beams with interfacial slip and shear deformation in steel considered. Closed-form solutions are derived for simply supported composite beam under uniform and mid-span concentrated load respectively. Examples are given to compute various quantities of beams. Comparing the results calculated by closed-form solutions with those by ANSYS, good agreements are found. Finally, an explicit formula for the equivalent bending stiffness of the composite beams is found by which the deflections of the composite beams can be calculated as if they were common Bernoulli beams.

Abstract:Based on the bending performance test and numerical analysis, a study on the mechanical properties of the steel-concrete composite beam with corroded studs is conducted under negative bending moment. Five beams were tested, among which, four beams were treated by constant current and accelerated corrosion ( CCAC) to cause corrosion of the studs. The corrosion rate of studs was 0% ~40%. The results show that with the increase of the stud corrosion rate, the flexural capacity of the composite beam decreases slightly, but its shear capacity decreases significantly. According to the test results, a new calculation and analysis model is set up to study the mechanical performance of the composite beam with stud corroded under the effect of negative bending moment. The numerical analysis model can predict the test results quite accurately.

Abstract:The structural behavior of composite slim beam in the negative moment region is the basis of the structural design.The concrete in the negative moment region may crack,and researches so far on the loading capacity of this type of beam are not adequate.Thus,the structural design nowadays largely depends on experiences,which greatly limits its application.In this paper,the behavior of a cantilever composite slim beam has been investigated by using theoretical analysis.At the same time,a simplified model is gained by the beam theory and the equivalent-section method in the elastic-plastic mechanics,so do the equations of the elastic stiffness and limited capacity.Numerical simulations have also been carried out by Ansys,a general FEA package.The analysis results agree well with each other.Consequently,this method is effective enough to investigate the composite slim beams and this simplified model can be used in the engineering design.

Abstract:Slips at the interface of steel girders and concrete slabs have significant effects on the mechanical behavior of composite beams in elastic stage. Based on the differential equations of slips, the solutions of slip and slip strain in negative bending regions of continuous composite beams are obtained. By means of the slip strain solutions, the strain distribution of composite sections under negative bending is analyzed, and the methods for calculating the load-carrying capacity of composite beams are proposed. It is shown that the additional curvature induced by slip effect decreases the elastic moment strength of composite beams under negative bending moment in most conditions. This partial interaction effect should be considered in design.

Abstract:Slip occurs both at joist-slab interface and concrete-reinforcement interface of composite steel-concrete beams under negative bending moment. A mechanical model is established to investigate the stiffness of composite beams considering two types of slip. In order to validate the model, a test of 3 full-scale specimen beams was conducted. The results show that slip always exists for composite beams under negative bending even with complete shear interaction between the steel and concrete components. The slip effect makes additional curvature of the beam and reduces the section stiffness by 10% to 20% in comparison with that given by transformed section method. Hence, the slip effect can not be neglected in design. Formulae are also proposed to calculate the deflection of cantilever beams. The results can serve as a basis for further study on stiffness of continuous composite steel-concrete beams.

Abstract:Engineered Cementitious Composite (ECC) has high ductility and characteristic of multi-micro-cracks under tension and shear loads.The concrete can be replaced with the ECC material in the steel-concrete continuous composite beam under negative moment to reduce the crack of concrete slab.The bending and cracking properties of steel-ECC composite beams are studied and compared.The experiments consist of 2 steel-ECC composite beams and 1 steelconcrete composite beams.The influence of reinforcement ratio on bending and cracking property is discussed.The study reveals that,when under negative moment,the rigidity of steel-ECC composite beam is higher than that of steel-concrete composite beam,while ductility decreases because of the effect of the ECC flange.Steel-ECC composite beams have excellent control over the development of the crack.Higher reinforcement ratio has better control over the crack.The method to calculate the bending capability and cracking load of steel-ECC composite beams is proposed.A basic model is put forward to calculate the deflection and crack width.

Abstract:Composite slab with steel sheeting deck consider as a continuous slab when it is under a constructional situation, but many recent researches are focused on simply supported slab. In order to study the load carrying capacity on negative moment region, a numerical analysis with finite element analysis program ABAQUS was carried out. Results of analysis show that the reinforced steel rebar help to increase load carrying capacity and to control concrete cracks in the negative moment region.

Abstract:The behavior of corroded steel–concrete composite beams under hogging moment was studied by experimental investigation and theoretical analysis. A total of eight specimens, six of which had corroded shear studs, were tested. The corrosion rate of studs ranged from 0 to approximately 50%. The constant-current accelerated corrosion method was adopted to accelerate the corrosion process. The loading test results indicated that the bending capacity of the corroded beams decreased slightly with increasing corrosion ratio of the studs. The corroded beams also exhibited an obvious decrease in bending rigid stiffness and increase in the slip between the steel beam and the concrete slab. An analytical model was developed to study the steel–concrete composite beams with corroded studs under hogging moment. It is shown that the analytical model is able to predict the test results with reasonable accuracy.

Abstract:Engineered cementitious composites (ECC) and ultra-high performance concrete (UHPC) could significantly enhance the cracking performance of the negative bending regions of composite beams. In this study, the negative bending behaviour of corrugated web composite beams using normal concrete (NC), ECC and UHPC was comparatively discussed. Firstly, the negative bending test was performed for three composite beams using different concrete. The results showed that the failure modes of the corrugated web composite beams were characterized by local buckling of the steel beam compressed flanges and severe cracking of the concrete slabs. The negative bending capacity of the composite beams using UHPC increased by 17.9% and 14.4% compared to those using NC and ECC, respectively. Besides, finite element simulation indicated that the negative bending performance of steel-ECC composite beam was particularly affected by steel strength and reinforcement strength, and that of steel-UHPC composite beam showed the most significant response to steel strength. Furthermore, the negative bending capacity formula in the code was found conservative in predicting corrugated web composite beams, especially for those using UHPC. With the consideration of the tensile strength of concrete and the omission of the contribution of corrugated webs, a reasonable formula for predicting the corrugated web composite beams using different concrete was proposed and proved to have satisfactory accuracy.

Abstract:Due to the strain-hardening and multi-cracking properties, engineered cementitious composite (ECC) is a new solution to the cracking issue in the negative bending moment region of steel–concrete composite beams. This paper presents an experimental and analytical study on the flexural performance of composite steel–ECC beams subjected to negative bending moments as well as the tension stiffening behaviour of reinforced ECC (R/ECC) flange slabs. Three beams with different slab materials and reinforcement ratios were tested under a hogging moment. Experimental results demonstrated significant enhancement in stiffness and crack resistance for the steel–ECC composite beams. A practical four-parameter fibre-bridging model was established to describe the strain-hardening behaviour of different ECC materials. Then, a modified analytical tension-stiffening model for R/ECC was formulated considering the strain-hardening behaviour of ECC and rebar–ECC bond–slip interaction based on the conventional tension-stiffening model for reinforced concrete. This modified model was verified by several direct tensile tests of R/ECC members. In addition, by applying the model to the traditional fibre beam–column element model, the mechanical performance and crack opening of general R/ECC structures were derived. The simulation results of the steel–ECC composite beams demonstrated satisfactory accuracy compared with the test results. Finally, a parametric study based on the new model was conducted to identify the influence of several important material and structural parameters on the flexural performance of steel–ECC composite beams under negative moments.
Mechanical Behavior of Elastic Buckling of Composite Steel Concrete Beams

Abstract:The mechanical behavior of steel webs with negative bending was studied with combined stress loads of flexure, axial pressure and shear to prevent local buckling in continuous composite beams. The elastic local buckling coefficient for complicated stress loads was calculated based on the critical buckling load for simple loading cases and interaction equations relating eccentric compression and shear. The limiting height to thickness ratio was also determined for webs without stiffening ribs in the elastic stage. The bending stress has more effect on the limiting height to thickness ratio than the shear stress. This method provides a better design method for composite steel concrete beams than the current design code.
Loading Capacity of Composite Slim Beam in the Sagging Moment Region

Abstract:Steel-concrete composite slim beams, with steel section encased in concrete slabs, provide a steel-concrete floor construction of minimum depth and high capability of fire resistance. Under vertical load, the moment at the midspan of framed beams is positive and under horizontal load, the sign of the moment depends on the position of the cross-section. Clearly understanding the capacity of composite slim beam in the sagging moment region is the basis of structural analysis. The bending capability and flexural stiffness of the composite sections in sagging moment region are investigated theoretically. A simply supported beam has been loaded in order to verify the theoretical result. The research shows that theoretical bending capability is well consistent with test result. A the theoretical flexural stiffness is well relatively conservative, for ignoring the contribution of the pre-cast concrete slab in the analysis.

Abstract:Based on the background of steel-concrete composite roof used in the ballroom of Wenzhou Sheraton Hotel,and on the basis of analysis of mechanical property and deformation characteristic of the composite beams,a multi-stage design method is proposed to control the beam's sectional stress and deformation in the negative moment region.Composite beams designed by multi-stage method need to set post-pouring strip and conversion-joints at negative moment region,the beams bear self-weight with simply support first,and then bear external loads with rigid support.Specific design content,including the conversion-joints design is presented,field loading test verifies the reliability of the composite structure and the accuracy of different methods to calculate effective width of concrete compressed flange,some optimization proposal is suggested for steel-concrete composite design,in terms of joints connection,sectional form of steel beams and concrete flange reinforcement.

Abstract:Concrete cracking and interface slip decrease the bending stiffness of steel-concrete composite beams (SCCBs) in the negative moment region. To evaluate this decrease in the stiffness of SCCBs, a static differential equation is used to derive analytical expressions of interface slip and deflection. Based on the static load test results for SCCBs, the influence of concrete cracking and interface slip on the stiffness is analyzed. A linear stiffness reduction method is proposed for calculating the stiffness of SCCBs in the negative moment region after the concrete undergoes cracking. The proposed method can be used in engineering applications as it enables the facile and accurate calculation of the deflection and slip and the changes in stiffness of SCCBs in the negative moment region. The method can also be used for predicting and evaluating performance in the field of structural design.

Abstract:A novel UHPC‐NC composite structure was proposed to enhance the load‐bearing capacity of concrete beam bridges under negative bending moments. Parameters including steel fiber content in UHPC, reinforcement ratio, and steel box filling height were varied across 8 UHPC‐NC narrow steel box composite beam specimens. The study involved testing, and measurement of failure modes, crack distribution, deformation characteristics, and crack widths. Additionally, a method for calculating maximum crack widths was developed based on crack distribution patterns. Furthermore, a computational model for predicting the ultimate bearing capacity of UHPC‐NC narrow steel box composite beams was constructed. The computed results aligned closely with experimental findings, validating the accuracy of the proposed computational model.

Nonlinear finite element analysis of beam-to-column composite connections in steel structures

Abstract:Steel moment frame system is extensively applied on a seismic design of high raised building. Nevertheless the increased load carrying capacity through the composite effect between the steel frame and concrete slab has been underestimated. Because a neutral axis at the sagging moment region moves upward by the composite effect, the stress of lower flange will be higher than non-composite section. Therefore, the design method without considering composite effect can cause an unsafe design result. For this reason, it is necessary to study the effect of beam-to-column composite connections in steel structures. This paper focuses on non-linear finite element analysis (FEA) of the composite beam-to-column connections in steel structures with various constructional details and parameters. The behavior of the force-displacement curve and the moment-rotation curve of the composite connections are discussed. And the paper investigates the composite effect on the limited moment resistance, initial rotational stiffness and the rotation capacity of connections. Comparison with the current Chinese code for design of steel structures is also presented. It proves that the composite action reduces the ductility and rotation ability of the joints. The type of steel joints has little effect on the mechanical property of rigid connections.

Abstract:Concrete slab in the negative moment area of continuous steel-concrete composite beams is prone to crack due to the low tension strength of common concrete, which could result in the decreasing of the strength and durability. To solve this problem, a method of replacing the concrete slab with reactive powder concrete (RPC) slab which is of super high strength, durability, toughness and volume stabilization is presented. According to the constitutive relation and the high tension strength of RPC, the normal section failure mode is defined as the critical crack state, and the calculation formula of ultimate bearing capacity is deduced. Finally, some parameters that influence the ultimate bearing capacity are analyzed, such as the height ratio of RPC slab to whole beam, width ratio of RPC slab to steel beam, and the ratio of reinforcement of RPC slab. Compared with the steel-concrete composite beams, it is indicated that in the precondition of RPC slab unallowable crack in negative moment area, the ultimate bearing capacity of steel-RPC composite beams can still be increased, and the crack resistance, stiffness and durability can all be enhanced greatly.
