Abstract:Jensen’s inequality and extended Jensen’s inequality are two important integral inequalities when problems of stability analysis and controller synthesis for time-delay systems are considered. The extended Jensen’s inequality introduces two additional free matrices and is generally regarded to be less conservative than Jensen’s inequality. The equivalence between Jensen’s inequality and extended Jensen’s inequality in bounding the quadratic term −h∫t−htẋT(s)Zẋ(s)ds in Lyapunov functional of time-delay systems is presented and theoretically proved. It is shown that the extended Jensen’s inequality does not decrease the lower bound of this quadratic term obtained using Jensen’s inequality, and then it does not reduce the conservativeness though two additional free matrices M1 and M2 are involved.

Abstract:The Newton method for variational inequality problem is locally and quadratically convergent. By using a differentiable merit function, Taji, Fukushima and Ibaraki([1]) have given a globally convergent modified Newton method for the strongly monotone variational inequality problem and proved their method to be quadratically convergent under some additional assumptions. In this paper we propose to present a trust region-type modification of Newton method for the strictly monotone variational inequality problem using the same merit function as that in [1]. It is then shown that our method is well defined and globally convergent and that, under the same assumptions as those in [1], our algorithm reduces to the basic Newton method and hence the rate of convergence is quadratic. Computational experimence indicates the efficiency of the proposed method.

Abstract:The Jensen inequality is of fundamental importance because of its influential and interesting consequences. In recent years, the Jensen inequality has been supposed to be the most engaging source for research. We present interesting improvements to the continuous version of Jensen's inequality through the application of the concept of 6-convexity. For real visualization and comparison to other results, some numerical experiments were provided. With the aid of the acquired results, improvements for the Hermite-Hadamard and Hölder inequalities were presented. Some relationships between the means were granted as applications of established improvements. In addition, some estimations of the Csiszár divergence and its associated cases were received as further applications of the obtained results. The major techniques employed in formulating the proposed improvements included the Jensen inequality and the concept of convexity.

Abstract:We aim to extend some recent refinements of the Jensen inequality. First, we establish even more precise estimates for the Jensen inequality. Then, we derive an improvement of the Jensen inequality with regard to h ‐convexity. As an application, our main results are applied in deriving refinements of power mean inequalities and the Hölder inequality. Finally, we obtain more accurate estimates for f ‐divergences, important in the information theory.

The result generalizes and completes the classical Jensen–Steffensen inequality. The validity of the strict inequality is studied. Abstract:In this paper, we discuss variational inequality (VI) problems without monotonicity from the perspective of convergence of projection-type algorithms. In particular, we identify existing conditions as well as present new conditions that are sufficient to guarantee convergence. The first half of the paper focuses on the case where a Minty solution exists (also known as Minty condition), which is a common assumption in the recent developments for non-monotone VI. The second half explores alternative sufficient conditions that are different from the existing ones such as monotonicity or Minty condition, using an algorithm-based approach. Through examples and convergence analysis, we show that these conditions are capable of characterizing different classes of VI problems where the algorithms are guaranteed to converge.

Abstract:It is well known that the traditional Jensen inequality is proved by lower bounding the given convex function, $f(x)$, by the tangential affine function that passes through the point $(E\{X\},f(E\{X\}))$, where $E\{X\}$ is the expectation of the random variable $X$. While this tangential affine function yields the tightest lower bound among all lower bounds induced by affine functions that are tangential to $f$, it turns out that when the function $f$ is just part of a more complicated expression whose expectation is to be bounded, the tightest lower bound might belong to a tangential affine function that passes through a point different than $(E\{X\},f(E\{X\}))$. In this paper, we take advantage of this observation, by optimizing the point of tangency with regard to the specific given expression, in a variety of cases, and thereby derive several families of inequalities, henceforth referred to as ``Jensen-like'' inequalities, which are new to the best knowledge of the author. The degree of tightness and the potential usefulness of these inequalities is demonstrated in several application examples related to information theory.

Abstract:The convex integral introduced by Mesiar et al. (2015) [10] is a special superdecomposition integral related to convex functional. It can be regarded as the counterpart of concave integral, but it is not fully dual to the concave integral. This paper investigates some properties of the convex integral in detail. We show which of these results are valid both for the concave and convex integrals, which are dual to each other, and which are valid only for one of these two integrals. We also provide a necessary and sufficient condition for which two concave integrals (resp. convex integral) based on different monotone measures coincide with each other.
