Abstract:In this paper we show how the superquadratic functions can be used as a tool for researching other types of convex functions like $\phi $-convexity, strong-convexity and uniform convexity. We show how to use inequalities satisfied by superquadratic functions and how to adapt the technique used to get them in order to obtain new results satisfied by uniformly convex functions and to $\phi $-convex functions. Also, we show examples that emphasize relations between superquadracity and some other types of convex functions

Abstract:The Jensen inequality is of fundamental importance because of its influential and interesting consequences. In recent years, the Jensen inequality has been supposed to be the most engaging source for research. We present interesting improvements to the continuous version of Jensen's inequality through the application of the concept of 6-convexity. For real visualization and comparison to other results, some numerical experiments were provided. With the aid of the acquired results, improvements for the Hermite-Hadamard and Hölder inequalities were presented. Some relationships between the means were granted as applications of established improvements. In addition, some estimations of the Csiszár divergence and its associated cases were received as further applications of the obtained results. The major techniques employed in formulating the proposed improvements included the Jensen inequality and the concept of convexity.

Abstract:For an inequality system defined by an infinite family of proper lower semicontinuous convex functions in normed linear space, we consider the Farkas-Minkowski (FM for short) type qualification and the basic constraint qualification (BCQ for short). By employing a new approach based on some new results established here on the SECQ (sum of epigraphs constraint qualification) for families of closed convex sets, some sufficient conditions involving further relaxing Slater type conditions for ensuring the FM qualification are provided. As applications, new sufficient conditions for ensuring the BCQ are given. These results significantly improve the corresponding ones in [C. Li and K. F. Ng, SIAM T. Optim., 15 (2005), pp. 488-512] and [C. Li, X. P. Zhao, and Y. H. Hu, SIAM J. Optim., 23 (2013), pp. 2208-2230], and they are obtained without the key continuity assumption on the sup-function of the inequality system which the previous works depend heavily on. Some examples are also presented to illustrate the applicability of our results.

Abstract:We consider the optimization problem $(P_{A})$ $\inf_{x\in X}\{f(x)+g(Ax)\}$ where $f$ and $g$ are proper convex functions defined on locally convex Hausdorff topological vector spaces $X$ and $Y$, respectively, and $A$ is a linear operator from $X$ to $Y$. By using the properties of the epigraph of the conjugated functions, some sufficient and necessary conditions for the strong Fenchel duality and the strong converse Fenchel duality of $(P_{A})$ are provided. Sufficient and necessary conditions for the stable Fenchel duality and for the total Fenchel duality are also derived.

Abstract:The main purpose of this paper is to introduce various convexity concepts in terms of a positive Chebyshev system ω and give a systematic investigation of the relations among them. We generalize a celebrated theorem of Bernstein–Doetsch to the setting of ω-Jensen convexity. We also give sufficient conditions for the existence of discontinuous ω-Jensen affine functions. The concept of Wright convexity is extended to the setting of Chebyshev systems, as well, and it turns out to be an intermediate convexity property between ω-convexity and ω-Jensen convexity. For certain Chebyshev systems, we generalize the decomposition theorems of Wright convex and higher-order Wright convex functions obtained by C. T. Ng in 1987 and by Maksa and Páles in 2009, respectively.

Abstract:The bounded linear regularity property plays a key role in the study of the strong convergence and/or convergence rate of the CQ algorithm for solving split feasibility problems. To establish some sufficient conditions ensuring the bounded linear regularity property for split feasibility problems in normed linear spaces, we introduce the notion of a relative regularity condition and its associated relative regularity constant in spirit of the regularity condition used in Burke and Ferris (1995) [12]. Based on convex analysis techniques, we explore equivalent characterizations of the relative regularity condition, which in particular extend the classical results in Burke and Ferris (1995) [12] from the Euclidean space to general normed linear spaces, and then establish some important and useful properties in terms of the related relative regularity constant. Consequently, we develop a new technique to establish some sufficient conditions ensuring the bounded linear regularity property for split feasibility problems in normed linear spaces. The sufficient conditions presented in this paper are in terms of the relative regularity constant, which seem completely new. Applied to the case of Hilbert spaces, our results extend and improve the corresponding ones in Wang et al. (2017) [35] by relaxing the relevant assumptions.(c) 2023 Elsevier Inc. Abstract:In this paper we investigate continuity properties of functions $f:\mathbb{R}_+\to\mathbb{R}_+$ that satisfy the $(p,q)$-Jensen convexity inequality $$ f\big(H_p(x,y)\big)\leq H_q(f(x),f(y)) \qquad(x,y>0), $$ where $H_p$ stands for the $p$th power (or Hölder) mean. One of the main results shows that there exist discontinuous multiplicative functions that are $(p,p)$-Jensen convex for all positive rational number $p$. A counterpart of this result states that if $f$ is $(p,p)$-Jensen convex for all $p\in P\subseteq\mathbb{R}_+$, where $P$ is a set of positive Lebesgue measure, then $f$ must be continuous.

Some convexity and monotonicity results of trace functionals

Abstract:In this paper, we prove the convexity of trace functionals $$(A,B,C)\mapsto \text{Tr}|B^{p}AC^{q}|^{s},$$ for parameters $(p,q,s)$ that are best possible, where $B$ and $C$ are any $n$-by-$n$ positive definite matrices, and $A$ is any $n$-by-$n$ matrix. We also obtain the monotonicity versions of trace functionals of this type. As applications, we extend some results in \cite{HP12quasi,CFL16some} and resolve a conjecture in \cite{RZ14} in the matrix setting. Other conjectures in \cite{RZ14} will also be discussed. We also show that some related trace functionals are not concave in general. Such concavity results were expected to hold in different problems.

Abstract:A notion of quasi-regularity is extended for the inclusion problem ${F(p)\in C}$ , where F is a differentiable mapping from a Riemannian manifold M to ${\mathbb R^n}$ . When C is the set of minimum points of a convex real-valued function h on ${\mathbb R^n}$ and DF satisfies the L-average Lipschitz condition, we use the majorizing function technique to establish the semi-local convergence of sequences generated by the Gauss-Newton method (with quasi-regular initial points) for the convex composite function h ◦ F on Riemannian manifold. Two applications are provided: one is for the case of regularities on Riemannian manifolds and the other is for the case when C is a cone and DF(p 0)(·) − C is surjective. In particular, the results obtained in this paper extend the corresponding one in Wang et al. (Taiwanese J Math 13:633–656, 2009).

Abstract:We develop an algorithmic theory of convex optimization over discrete sets. Using a combination of algebraic and geometric tools we are able to provide polynomial time algorithms for solving broad classes of convex combinatorial optimization problems and convex integer programming problems in variable dimension. We discuss some of the many applications of this theory including to quadratic programming, matroids, bin packing and cutting-stock problems, vector partitioning and clustering, multiway transportation problems, and privacy and confidential statistical data disclosure. Highlights of our work include a strongly polynomial time algorithm for convex and linear combinatorial optimization over any family presented by a membership oracle when the underlying polytope has few edge-directions; a new theory of so-termed n-fold integer programming, yielding polynomial time solution of important and natural classes of convex and linear integer programming problems in variable dimension; and a complete complexity classification of high dimensional transportation problems, with practical applications to fundamental problems in privacy and confidential statistical data disclosure.

Abstract:We aim to extend some recent refinements of the Jensen inequality. First, we establish even more precise estimates for the Jensen inequality. Then, we derive an improvement of the Jensen inequality with regard to h ‐convexity. As an application, our main results are applied in deriving refinements of power mean inequalities and the Hölder inequality. Finally, we obtain more accurate estimates for f ‐divergences, important in the information theory.
