Abstract:Analysis of two new pump-couplings: semi-ring and trapezoid LD side-pumped configurations in alkali vapor lasers is reported, which mainly includes the numerical approaches for evaluation of the pump intensity and temperature distribution in the cell of these two configurations. Comparison between the simulated results of the semi-ring and trapezoid LD side-pumped Cs vapor lasers and the experimental results of the single-side pumped Cs vapor lasers with a cylindrical white diffuse reflector and a stable or unstable resonator is made. Dependencies of laser power on pump power and flowed velocity for semi-ring, trapezoid, single and double side-pumped configurations are calculated, demonstrating the advantages of the semi-ring and trapezoid LD side-pumped configurations. Thus the model is very helpful for designing high-power side-pumped alkali vapor lasers.

Abstract:A special cavity for LD-pumped solid-state lasers with large pumpsize is presented.Based on ABCD matrix calculations,when the laser crystal is put in the long arm of a folded-cavity configuration,mode-matching requirements between pump light and laser light can be obtained.Advantages of the cavity are also supported by rate-equation theory and experiments in some literatures.Criteria of how to design LD-pumped solid-state lasers are also suggested.

Abstract:We have developed three types of green solid state lasers pumped by laser diodes. A green laser outputs up to 24.5 mW at 532 nm with Nd:YAG/KTP crystal, the second outputs up to 19 mW with Nd:YVO4/KTP crystal and the third up to 29 mW with LNYAB crystal. The experiments setups and results are discussed. Comparison of these three kinds of lasers are presented.

Abstract:To provide good light sources of narrow linewidth for coherent optical communication systems we have proposed a new type of external cavity semiconductor laser with multisegment cavity structure.1 Its advantages are: (1) stable single longitudinal mode operation with high side-mode suppression ratio is easily obtained; (2) two-branch output beams standing in direction can be used. In this paper we report a practical device with multisegment cavity configuration, which basically consists of a 1.5-μm antireflection coated laser diode (LD) coupled by a graded-index (GRIN) lens to a thin Fabry-Perot etalon. The etalon is fixed on a piezoelectric transducer (PZT) and its angle of inclination can be adjusted by three fine screws for laser wavelength tuning and for optimization of alignment. The facet reflectivities of the LD, GRIN lens, and F.P. etalon are matched for achieving good single longitudinal mode oscillation. Analyses and experiments indicate that the frequency instability originates mainly from the fluctuation of the environmental temperature and mechanical disturbances in external cavity lasers.2 To reduce these effects all components are stuck on a microcrystal glass plate with low expansion coefficient and their interthermal expansions are compensated, i.e., 2αi,Li ≈ 0, where αi, and Li, are the thermal expansion coefficient and lengths of each component, respectively. The LD temperature is controlled within 0.1°C using a small Peltier cooler. All the components are put in a copper box. The device size is 32 × 26 × 65 mm3 and the actual cavity length is 2-4 cm.

Abstract:The intensity distribution of three side-pumping light is analyzed inside laser crystal.End-pumping is added in the condition of three side-pumping;the side-pumping light is used to increase output power and the end-pumped light to improve the beam quality of the side-pumped laser.The experiments are made to study the solid-state laser multi-direction pumped by LD.The results show that the optical beam quality of the side-pumped laser is notable improved by adding end-pumped light,there is an optimum matching power value.

Abstract:In order to keep the symmetric of the pump geometry and obtain a low-level, high quality laser output, the temperature of the side-pumped laser rod is more often be controlled by a water cooling system than a conduction cooling system in the diode-pumped solid-state lasers. But the use of the water cooling system in the diode-pumped solid-state lasers. But the use of the water cooling system increases the volume and decreases the mobility. To solve the confliction between the beam quality and the mobility of the laser system, a novel, compact and all-solid design of the pump structure is applied by semicircular mounted LD arrays in the pump module, and two pump modules are working together to composite each other. Numerical calculation and experiment are performed, the output laser has a round-sharped beam with a beam waist of 5 mm and a divergence angle less than 7 mrad, and a maxim output pulse energy of 75.8 mJ is obtained under the working frequency of 20 Hz, the slope efficiency is 38.8%.

Abstract:The most important advances in hybrid microcavity lasers, the current deep insight into the inherent relationship between cavity geometry and the resulting laser behaviors (wavelength, polarization, phase, mode, and direction, as well as their multiple combination), along with the challenges and prospects of future development of hybrid microcavity lasers are summarized and proposed. Control coupling and synchronization of lasers has become increasingly attractive for their applications in spectroscopy, imaging, sensing, secret communication, and optical networks. As complex microcavities emerge, more complicated light–matter interactions, along with the resulting distinct lasing emission behavior, is induced in these hybrid microcavities. This review summarizes the most important advances and current deep insights into the inherent relationship between the hybrid microcavity geometries and lasing behaviors, which are classified as the modulated lasing output freedom, including wavelength, angular momentum, mode, direction, and their multiple combinations. Finally, based on scientific research and practical application, the challenges and prospects of future development of hybrid microcavities are proposed, hoping to provide valuable inspiration for further optimizing hybrid microcavities to achieve low thresholds, small divergence angles, and single‐mode microcavity lasers.

Abstract:An innovative gain module is employed to improve the performance of heat-conduct cooled asymmetric laser,which consists of a Nd∶YAG rod pumped by a semicylidrically arranged LD array,and right-angle prism as the mirror,leading to a highly stable output with a high quality.The laser works at 20 Hz,and the output energy per pulse is 75 mJ,the optic axis excursion is less than 0.1mrad,the divergence angle is 2.2mrad,and output stability is 3%.

Abstract:We present the principle, design, packaging and measurement results of widely tunable V-cavity lasers. By using a novel half-wave coupler, single-mode lasing with high side mode-suppression-ratio is achieved. Single-electrode controlled wide-band wavelength tuning with Vernier effect is realized. The full-band tuning of 50 channels with 100 GHz spacing is demonstrated by further employing temperature induced gain spectrum shift. The laser is packaged into a small-form-factor 9-pin TOSA, and the electronic driver has been developed for the wavelength tuning and direct modulation. The advantages of compactness, fabrication simplicity, and easy wavelength control offer great potential for the tunable laser to be used in low-cost access and data center networks, as well as in portable devices for spectroscopic analysis.

Abstract:We propose a theoretical model (cavityless pulsed solid-state-laser theory) to analyze the pulse characteristics of cavity-less solid-state lasers. A high gain Nd:YVO4 end-pumped cavityless laser system is adopted to verify the theoretical model. It shows that the performance of output energy and pulse width achieved in cavityless configuration is better than that in resonator configuration when the small-signal gain reaches the saturated level. The simulation results calculated by our theoretical model agree very well with the experimental results. This agreement proves the validity of our theoretical model, which has great importance for theoretical analyses of high gain pulsed laser.

Abstract:The characteristic of solid-state laser is presented,which is used as optical gyro and is involved in experimental research on a 4-mirror 8-type cavity bidirectional solid-state ring laser pumped with a fiber-coupled laser diode.By inserting an F-P etalon with function of aperture in the ring cavity,single-longitudinal and TEM00 mode have been detected.Bidirectional cw solid-state ring laser has been operated and its output powers are measured.Its stability is 0.4% in 100 s sampling time.The linewidth of the single-frequency is about 4 kHz in 1.5 s sampling time when the output power is 0.2 mW.Results show that it is the principal characteristic that DPSSL has narrow linewidth for a solid-state cw ring laser used as an optical rotation sensor.Experimental results demonstrate that solid-state ring laser with a homogenous-broaden crystal as laser media can be operated in single-frequency,bidirectional outputs state.

Abstract:Planar feedback micro-nanoscale cavities, shaped by advances in nanofabrication, have revolutionized laser technology, giving rise to chip-scale, low-threshold lasers with wide-ranging applications, spanning from atmospheric investigation to incorporation into central devices such as smartphones and computer chips. The complicated designs of these cavities, shaped by the physics of periodic and quasiperiodic structures, empower efficient manipulation of light -matter interaction and coherent light coupling, minimizing losses. This review thoroughly explores the underlying concepts and crucial parameters of planar feedback microcavities, shedding light on the photophysical behavior of recent gain materials pivotal for realizing optimal lasing properties. The examination extends to photonic crystal bandgap (PhC BG) microcavity lasers, specifically with periodic and quasiperiodic architectures. In-depth assessments probe into the principles and designs of each architecture, exploring features such as wavelength selectivity, tuneability, lasing patterns, and the narrow linewidth characteristics inherent in distributed feedback (DFB) microcavity lasers. The review highlights the intriguing characteristics of non-radiative bound states in the continuum (BIC) within periodic architectures, emphasizing trends toward high-quality factors, low thresholds, and directional and vortex beam lasing. It also explores the nascent field of Quasiperiodic (QP) microcavity lasers, addressing challenges related to disorder in traditional periodic structures. Comparative inquiries offer insights into the strengths and limitations of each architecture, while discussions on challenges and future directions aim to inspire innovation and collaboration in this dynamic field.

Abstract:The horizontal cavity surface emitting laser (HCSEL) boasts excellent properties, including high power, high beam quality, and ease of packaging and integration. It fundamentally resolves the problem of the large divergence angle in traditional edge-emitting semiconductor lasers, making it a feasible scheme for realizing high-power, small-divergence-angle, and high-beam-quality semiconductor lasers. Here, we introduce the technical scheme and review the development status of HCSELs. Firstly, we thoroughly analyze the structure, working principles, and performance characteristics of HCSELs according to different structures, such as the structural characteristics and key technologies. Additionally, we describe their optical properties. Finally, we analyze and discuss potential development prospects and challenges for HCSELs.
Single-lobed near diffraction-limited beam from 1W laser diode array with an external cavity

Abstract:An external cavity for the laser diode array with a conventional mirror in what we call two-time self-injection operation is presented. The external cavity consists of two lenses, a flat external mirror (EM) in the image plane of the array and a prism that is used as an output coupler. The single-lobed near diffraction-limited far field beam of a 1 W 10-stripe gain-guided LD array lies at 6.4°-9° with the external cavity operation in two-time self-injection mode, whereas at 2.5°-3.0° for its normal feedback operation. The width of the far field beam (FWHM) is 0.43° and 0.63° at driving current of 2 and 3.2×I thr, respectively, much narrower than that in normal feedback operation, but at the expense of lower output power. The output of the system is very stable and insensitive to the tilt and position of the EM.

Abstract:With the development of high-power LD arrays, there is a resurgence of interest in DPSSL. But a practical problem is that the output beams of LD have a large divergent angle, generally θ11 equal to 10° and θ⊥ equal to 40° or so. This caused a high loss of pumping power. Meanwhile one of the main obstruct in LD arrays end-pumped architecture is that the laser beams which emitted from unit bar can’t be focused as a single beam by imaging system, i.e. the light field distribution at the focal plane of the focusing system is inhomogeneous and the laser beam doesn’t match the cavity mode. This restricted the pumped efficiency and 1.06 μm laser beams quality. The coupling methods Currently adopted include: aspheric lens series[1], gradient refractive index lens[2], optical fiber[3] and “close” coupling[4]. But all kinds of these coupling systems have some defeats: low transfer efficiency; bad quality of laser beam and restraining the number of unit bars of LD arrays. Lens duct is a kind of good coupling system[5,6,7], we adopted it in our experiment to improve the total conversion translate efficiency and beam quality.
Optimizing the Cavity-Arm Ratio of V-Shaped Semiconductor Disk Lasers

Abstract:Passively mode-locked semiconductor disk lasers have received tremendous attention from both science and industry. Their relatively inexpensive production combined with excellent pulse performance and great emission wavelength flexibility make them suitable laser candidates for applications ranging from frequency comb tomography to spectroscopy. However, due to the interaction of the active medium dynamics and the device geometry, emission instabilities occur at high pump powers and thereby limit their performance potential. Hence, understanding those instabilities becomes critical for an optimal laser design. Using a delay-differential equation model, we are able to detect, understand, and classify three distinct instabilities that limit the maximum achievable pump power for the fundamental mode-locking state and link them to characteristic positive net-gain windows. We furthermore derive a simple analytic approximation in order to quantitatively describe the stability boundary. Our results enable us to predict the optimal laser cavity configuration with respect to positive net-gain instabilities and are therefore of great relevance for the future development of passively mode-locking semiconductor disk lasers.

Abstract:Satellite laser altimeter(SLA),focus and trend of application in space,calls for the key parameters of the laser transmitter.On the basis of modeling for SLA with 500 km orbit altitude,the optimal design of all-solid-state laser is analyzed and confirmed by experiment.A novel pump module of semicircular LD array oppositely arranged with heat-sink is well-designed.A resonator consisting of a corner-cube and a Gauss reflectivity mirror is used to obtain high mechanical stability,high thermal stability,and high beam quality.This laser produces the single pulse energy of 66.2 mJ at 30 Hz in 6.056 ns pulse,with energy stability better than 3%,the beam divergence of 0.6 mrad,and optics axes nearly nil drift.The results indicate that the laser is a practical engineering instrument for the SLA.

Abstract:We design a Nd:YAG module with symmetrical LD side-pumped structure in a periodical arrangement between circular LD arrays and holders. This novel design has great potential to be used in compact and miniature laser systems. Design optimization and simulation on thermal effects have been performed. An experiment has also been carried out. The experiment results indicate the all-solid-state laser with the-Nd:YAG module can stably operate in the range of 10–30 Hz with no controlling temperature by TE cooler. The laser beam had a divergence angle less than 3.8 mrad and a maximum output pulse of 174 mJ has been obtained at the pump current of 50 A and working frequency of 23 Hz, corresponding to optical-optical conversion efficiency of 40.2%.

Abstract:We report an optical cavity design that combines a distributed feedback (DFB) cavity as the primary feedback element for lasing with a silver mirror acting as a Fabry-Pérot cavity for broadband reflection and mode confinement. To evaluate the design, we studied the effects of the silver mirror by excluding the DFB cavity and compared its amplified spontaneous emission (ASE) properties with the sample without the mirror. In the structure with the mirror, the gain medium undergoes ASE at an excitation fluence of compared to for the sample without the mirror. This lower ASE threshold is attributed to enhanced mode confinement and photon density of states (PDOS) from the silver mirror increasing the cavity photon lifetime ( . Using this hybrid cavity, a multimode optically pumped laser with a threshold of is demonstrated. This hybrid cavity design offers an effective solution that can be readily applied to other thin film-based laser devices.

Abstract:The use of cavity to manipulate photon emission of quantum dots (QDs) has been opening unprecedented opportunities for realizing quantum functional nanophotonic devices and also quantum information devices. In particular, in the field of semiconductor lasers, QDs were introduced as a superior alternative to quantum wells to suppress the temperature dependence of the threshold current in vertical-external-cavity surface-emitting lasers (VECSELs). In this work, a review of properties and development of semiconductor VECSEL devices and QD laser devices is given. Based on the features of VECSEL devices, the main emphasis is put on the recent development of technological approach on semiconductor QD VECSELs. Then, from the viewpoint of both single QD nanolaser and cavity quantum electrodynamics (QED), a single-QD-cavity system resulting from the strong coupling of QD cavity is presented. A difference of this review from the other existing works on semiconductor VECSEL devices is that we will cover both the fundamental aspects and technological approaches of QD VECSEL devices. And lastly, the presented review here has provided a deep insight into useful guideline for the development of QD VECSEL technology and future quantum functional nanophotonic devices and monolithic photonic integrated circuits (MPhICs).
