Abstract:In this paper we briefly discuss some of our recent results in the study of moduli space of Riemann surfaces. It is naturally divided into two parts, one about the differential geometric aspect, another on the topological aspect of the moduli spaces. To understand the geometry of the moduli spaces we introduced new metrics, studied in detail all of the known classical complete metrics, especially the Kähler-Einstein metric. As a corollary we proved that the logarithmic cotangent bundle of the moduli space is strictly stable in the sense of Mumford. The topological results we obtained were motivated by conjectures from string theory. We will describe in this part our proofs by localization method of the Mariño-Vafa formula, its two partition analogue as well as the theory of topological vertex and the simple localization proofs of the ELSV formula and the Witten conjecture. The applications of these formulas in Gromov-Witten theory and string duality will also be mentioned.
On Lurie's theorem and applications

Abstract:Lurie's theorem states that there exists a sheaf of ring spectra on the site of formally étale Deligne--Mumford stacks over the moduli stack of $p$-divisible groups of height $n$, which agrees with the classical Landweber exact functor theorem (LEFT) on affines. In other words, this theorem is a global, higher categorical refinement of the LEFT. In recent work, Lurie has introduced many of the ingredients one needs to prove this theorem, and in this article, we gather these ingredients together and prove Lurie's theorem. Applications of this theorem to Lubin--Tate theories, topological modular and automorphism forms, and Adams operations are also discussed.

Abstract:We construct a global B-model for any quasi-homogeneous polynomial f that has properties similar to the properties of the physic's B-model on a Calabi-Yau manifold. The main ingredients in our construction are K. Saito's theory of primitive forms and Givental's higher genus reconstruction. More precisely, we consider the moduli space M-mar degrees of the so-called marginal deformations of f . For each point sigma is an element of M-mam degrees mar we introduce the notion of an opposite subspace in the twisted de Rham cohomology of the corresponding singularity f(sigma) and prove that opposite subspaces are in one-to-one correspondence with the splittings of the Hodge structure in the vanishing cohomology of f(sigma). Therefore, according to M. Saito, an opposite subspace gives rise to a semi-simple Frobenius structure on the space of miniversal deformations of f(sigma). Using Givental's higher genus reconstruction we define a total ancestor potential A(sigma) ((h) over bar, q) whose properties can be described quite elegantly in terms of the properties of the corresponding opposite subspace. For example, if the opposite subspace corresponds to the splitting of the Hodge structure given by complex conjugation, then the total ancestor potential is monodromy invariant and it satisfies the BCOV holomorphic anomaly equations. The coefficients of the total ancestor potential could be viewed as quasi-modular forms on M-Mar degrees in a certain generalized sense. As an application of our construction, we consider the case of a Fermat polynomial W that defines a Calabi-Yau hypersurface X-w in a weighted-projective space. We have constructed two opposite subspaces and proved that the corresponding total ancestor potentials can be identified with respectively the total ancestor potential of the orbifold quotient X-W/(G) over tilde (W) and the total ancestor potential of FJRW invariants corresponding to (W, G(W)). Here G(W) is the maximal group of diagonal symmetries of W and (G) over tilde (W) is a quotient of G(W) by the subgroup of those elements that act trivially on X-W. In particular, our result establishes the so-called Landau-Ginzburg/Calabi-Yau correspondence for the pair (W, G(W)).
Classical Liouville Action and Uniformization of Orbifold Riemann Surfaces

Abstract:We study the classical Liouville field theory on Riemann surfaces of genus $g>1$ in the presence of vertex operators associated with branch points of orders $m_i>1$. In order to do so, we consider the generalized Schottky space $\mathfrak{S}_{g,n}(\boldsymbol{m})$ obtained as a holomorphic fibration over the Schottky space $\mathfrak{S}_g$ of the (compactified) underlying Riemann surface. Those fibers correspond to configuration spaces of $n$ orbifold points of orders $\boldsymbol{m}=(m_1,\dots,m_n)$. Drawing on the previous work of Park, Teo, and Takhtajan \cite{park2015potentials} as well as Takhtajan and Zograf \cite{ZT_2018}, we define Hermitian metrics $\mathsf{h}_i$ for tautological line bundles $\mathscr{L}_i$ over $\mathfrak{S}_{g,n}(\boldsymbol{m})$. These metrics are expressed in terms of the first coefficient of the expansion of covering map $J$ of the Schottky domain. Additionally, we define the regularized classical Liouville action $S_{\boldsymbol{m}}$ using Schottky global coordinates on Riemann orbisurfaces with genus $g>1$. We demonstrate that $\exp{S_{\boldsymbol{m}}/\pi}$ serves as a Hermitian metric on the $\mathbb{Q}$-line bundle $\mathscr{L}=\bigotimes_{i=1}^{n}\mathscr{L}_i^{\otimes (1-1/m_i^2)}$ over $\mathfrak{S}_{g,n}(\boldsymbol{m})$. Furthermore, we explicitly compute the first and second variations of the smooth real-valued function $\mathscr{S}_{\boldsymbol{m}}=S_{\boldsymbol{m}}-\pi\sum_{i=1}^n(m_i-\tfrac{1}{m_i})\log\mathsf{h}_{i}$ on the Schottky deformation space $\mathfrak{S}_{g,n}(\boldsymbol{m})$. We establish two key results: (i) $\mathscr{S}_{\boldsymbol{m}}$ generates a combination of accessory and auxiliary parameters, and (ii) $-\mathscr{S}_{\boldsymbol{m}}$ acts as a Kähler potential for a specific combination of Weil-Petersson and Takhtajan-Zograf metrics that appear in the local index theorem for orbifold Riemann surfaces \cite{ZT_2018}.

Liouville theory and the Weil-Petersson geometry of moduli space: bordered, conic, and higher genus surfaces

Abstract:Two-dimensional conformal field theory is a powerful tool to understand the geometry of surfaces. Here, we study Liouville conformal field theory in the classical (large central charge) limit, where it encodes the geometry of the moduli space of Riemann surfaces. Generalizing previous work, we employ this to study moduli spaces of higher genus surfaces, surfaces with boundaries, and surfaces with cone points. In each case, the knowledge of classical conformal blocks provides an extremely efficient approximation to the Weil-Petersson metric on moduli space. We find detailed agreement with analytic results for volumes and geodesic lengths on moduli space.

Abstract:The goal of this paper is to raise the possibility that there exists a meaningful theory of `motives' associated to certain hypergeometric integrals, viewed as functions of their parameters. It goes beyond the classical theory of motives, but should be compatible with it. Such a theory would explain a recent and surprising conjecture arising in the context of scattering amplitudes for a motivic Galois group action on Gauss' ${}_2F_1$ hypergeometric function, which we prove in this paper by direct means. More generally, we consider Lauricella hypergeometric functions and show on the one hand how the coefficients in their Taylor expansions can be promoted, via the theory of motivic fundamental groups, to motivic multiple polylogarithms. The latter are periods of ordinary motives and admit an action of the usual motivic Galois group, which we call the `local' action. On the other hand, we define lifts of the full Lauricella functions as matrix coefficients in a Tannakian category of twisted cohomology, which inherit an action of the corresponding Tannaka group. We call this the `global' action. We prove that these two actions, local and global, are compatible with each other, even though they are defined in completely different ways. The main technical tool is to prove that metabelian quotients of generalised Drinfeld associators on the punctured Riemann sphere are hypergeometric functions. We also study single-valued versions of these hypergeometric functions, which may be of independent interest.

Deformation Theory and Partition Lie Algebras

Abstract:A theorem of Lurie and Pridham establishes a correspondence between formal moduli problems and differential graded Lie algebras in characteristic zero, thereby formalising a well-known principle in deformation theory. We introduce a variant of differential graded Lie algebras, called partition Lie algebras, in arbitrary characteristic. We then explicitly compute the homotopy groups of free algebras, which parametrise operations. Finally, we prove generalisations of the Lurie-Pridham correspondence classifying formal moduli problems via partition Lie algebras over an arbitrary field, as well as over a complete local base.

Abstract:This survey paper is about moduli spaces in algebraic geometry for which a period map gives that space the structure of a (possibly incomplete) locally symmetric variety and about their natural compactifications. We outline the Baily-Borel compactification for such varieties, and show that it usually differs from the compactifications furnished by the standard techniques in algebraic geometry. It turns out however, that a reconciliation is possible by means of a generalization of the Baily-Borel construction for the class of incomplete locally symmetric varieties that occur here.The emphasis is here on moduli spaces of varieties other than that of polarized abelian varieties.
Unimodality and certain bivariate formal Laurent series

Abstract:In this paper, we examine the unimodality and strict unimodality of certain formal bivariate Laurent series with non-negative coefficients. We show that the sets of these formal bivariate Laurent series form commutative semirings under the operations of addition and multiplication of formal Laurent series. This result is used to establish the unimodality of sequences involving Gauss polynomials and certain refined color partitions. In particular, we solve an open problem posed by Andrews on the unimodality of generalized Gauss polynomials and establish an unimodal result for a statistic of plane partitions. We also establish many unimodal results for rank statistics in partition theory, including the rank statistics of concave and convex compositions studied by Andrews, as well as certain unimodal sequences studied by Kim-Lim-Lovejoy. Additionally, we establish the unimodality of the Betti numbers and Gromov-Witten invariants of certain Hilbert schemes of points.

Cohomology and geometry of Deligne--Lusztig varieties for ${\rm GL}_n$

Abstract:We give a description of the cohomology groups of the structure sheaf on smooth compactifications $\overline{X}(w)$ of Deligne--Lusztig varieties $X(w)$ for ${\rm GL}_n$, for all elements $w$ in the Weyl group. As a consequence, we obtain the ${\rm mod}\ p^m$ and integral $p$-adic étale cohomology of $\overline{X}(w)$. Moreover, using our result for $\overline{X}(w)$ and a spectral sequence associated to a stratification of $\overline{X}(w)$, we deduce the ${\rm mod}\ p^m$ and integral $p$-adic étale cohomology with compact support of $X(w)$. In our proof of the main theorem, in addition to considering the Demazure--Hansen smooth compactifications of $X(w)$, we show that a similar class of constructions provide smooth compactifications of $X(w)$ in the case of ${\rm GL}_n$. Furthermore, we show in the appendix that the Zariski closure of $X(w)$, for any connected reductive group $G$ and any $w$, has pseudo-rational singularities.

Uniformization of varieties with log-canonical singularities

Abstract:We study the problem of uniformizing quasi-projective varieties with logcanonical compactifications. More precisely, given a complex projective variety X with log-canonical singularities, we give criteria for X to be isomorphic to a Baily-Borel-Mok compactification of a ball quotient, asking on the one hand the equality case in a suitable Miyaoka-Yau (MY) inequality, and on the other hand some adequate assumptions on the singularities. We also give as a result of independent interest that log-resolutions of log-canonical singularities have their fibers connected by chains of special varieties in the sense of Campana; this is used in the proof to control the behaviour of the period map near the exceptional divisors of such resolutions. We also show that it is necessary to assume that the singularities are at least logcanonical: some examples of Deligne-Mostow-Deraux can be manipulated to provide examples of singular varieties satisfying the equality case in MY, while not being isomorphic to such Baily-Borel-Mok compactifications.

Abstract:Let k be an algebraic closure of a finite field of odd characteristic. We prove that for any rank two graded Higgs bundle with maximal Higgs field over a generic hyperbolic curve {X_{1}} defined over k, there exists a lifting X of the curve to the ring {W(k)} of Witt vectors as well as a lifting of the Higgs bundle to a periodic Higgs bundle over {X/W(k)} . These liftings give rise to a two-dimensional absolutely irreducible representation of the arithmetic fundamental group {\pi_{1}(X_{K})} of the generic fiber of X. This curve X and its associated representation is in close relation to the canonical curve and its associated canonical crystalline representation in the p-adic Teichmüller theory for curves due to S. Mochizuki. Our result may be viewed as an analogue of the Hitchin–Simpson’s uniformization theory of hyperbolic Riemann surfaces via Higgs bundles.

Abstract:The moduli space of curves endowed with a nonzero abelian differential admits a natural stratification according to the configuration of its zeroes. We give a description of these strata for genus 3 in terms of root system data. For each non-open stratum we obtain a presentation of its orbifold fundamental group.
Geometric Structures on the Complement of a Projective Arrangement

Abstract:Consider a complex projective space with its Fubini-Study metric. We study certain one parameter deformations of this metric on the complement of an arrangement (= finite union of hyperplanes) whose Levi-Civita connection is of Dunkl type. Interesting examples are obtained from the arrangements defined by finite complex reflection groups. We determine a parameter interval for which the metric is locally of Fubini-Study type, flat, or complex-hyperbolic. We find a finite subset of this interval for which we get a complete orbifold or at least a Zariski open subset thereof, and we analyze these cases in some detail (e.g., we determine their orbifold fundamental group). In this set-up, the principal results of Deligne-Mostow on the Lauricella hypergeometric differential equation and work of Barthel-Hirzebruch-Höfer on arrangements in a projective plane appear as special cases. Along the way we produce in a geometric manner all the pairs of complex reflection groups with isomorphic discriminants, thus providing a uniform approach to work of Orlik-Solomon.

Abstract:In this paper we mainly study Calabi-Yau varieties that arise as triple covers of products of projective lines branched along simple normal crossing divisors. For some of those families of Calabi-Yau varieties, the period maps factor through arithmetic quotients of complex hyperbolic balls. We give a classification of such examples. One of the families was previously studied by Voisin, Borcea and Rohde. For these ball-type cases, we will show arithmeticity of the monodromy groups. These ball quotients are all commensurable to ball quotients in Deligne-Mostow theory. As a byproduct, we prove some commensurability relations among arithmetic groups in Deligne-Mostow theory.

Abstract:A number of compactifications familiar in complex-analytic geometry, in particular, the Baily-Borel compactification and its toroidal variants, as well as the Deligne-Mumford compactifications, can be covered by open subsets whose nonempty intersections are Eilenberg-MacLane spaces. We exploit this fact to describe the (rational) homotopy type of these spaces and the natural maps between them in terms of the simplicial sets attached to certain categories. We thus generalize an old result of Charney-Lee on the Baily-Borel compactification of A_g and recover (and rephrase) a more recent one of Ebert-Giansiracusa on the Deligne-Mumford compactifications. We also describe an extension of the period map for Riemann surfaces (going from the Deligne-Mumford compactification to the Baily-Borel compactification of the moduli space of principally polarized varieties) in these terms.

Abstract:We introduce equivariant L-genera associated to actions of Galois and related groups on algebraic varieties. We explain the role which these L-genera play in the spectral analysis of Eisenstein series. We also discuss the natural categorification of L-genera and its potential role in enumerative geometry.
