Abstract:Two-dimensional conformal field theory is a powerful tool to understand the geometry of surfaces. Here, we study Liouville conformal field theory in the classical (large central charge) limit, where it encodes the geometry of the moduli space of Riemann surfaces. Generalizing previous work, we employ this to study moduli spaces of higher genus surfaces, surfaces with boundaries, and surfaces with cone points. In each case, the knowledge of classical conformal blocks provides an extremely efficient approximation to the Weil-Petersson metric on moduli space. We find detailed agreement with analytic results for volumes and geodesic lengths on moduli space.
What problem does this paper attempt to address?
### Problems the Paper Attempts to Solve
This paper aims to understand the geometric properties of the moduli space of Riemann surfaces by studying the behavior of Liouville Conformal Field Theory (CFT) in the classical limit. Specifically, the authors focus on the moduli space of high-genus surfaces, surfaces with boundaries, and surfaces with conical points. The main objectives include:
1. **Calculating the Weil-Petersson Metric**: Efficiently approximating the Weil-Petersson metric, an important geometric quantity on the moduli space, using the classical conformal blocks of Liouville CFT.
2. **Validating Analytical Results**: Verifying the effectiveness of the method by numerically computing the volume and geodesic lengths of the moduli space and comparing them with known analytical results.
3. **Extending the Range of Applications**: Applying these methods to more complex types of surfaces, such as spheres with conical points, genus-2 surfaces with Z3 symmetry, and Riemann surfaces with boundaries.
4. **Exploring New Geometric Structures**: Discovering potential new structures in the moduli space, particularly in the context of Weil-Petersson geometry, through numerical calculations.
### Main Contributions
- **Efficient Numerical Calculation Method**: The authors provide an efficient numerical method to calculate geometric quantities of the moduli space using the classical conformal blocks of Liouville CFT.
- **Wide Applicability**: This method is not only applicable to simple surfaces but can also be extended to more complex types of surfaces, such as high-genus surfaces and surfaces with boundaries.
- **Consistency with Analytical Results**: In special cases (e.g., surfaces with additional discrete symmetries), the numerical results are highly consistent with analytical results, validating the accuracy of the method.
- **Potential Applications**: The method has broad potential applications in fields such as geometry, number theory, quantum gravity, and black holes, particularly in studying the statistical mechanics origins of quantum chaotic behavior and black hole entropy.
### Conclusion
By combining Liouville CFT and numerical calculation methods, this paper provides new tools and perspectives for studying the Weil-Petersson geometry of the moduli space of Riemann surfaces. These methods are not only theoretically significant but also demonstrate strong potential in practical applications.
