Abstract:We discuss a relatively simple and computationally inexpensive model that has recently been developed to study phase transformations and shape memory effects in finite nanostructures. Our major focus is given to nanowires of finite length and other nanostructures where size effects are pronounced. The main tool used here is based on mesoscopic models developed with the phase-field approach which we and other authors have applied before to study ferroelectrics at the nanoscale. We study the cubic-to-tetragonal transformations in which case the 2D analogue of the model describes the square-to-rectangle phase transformations. The actual model is based on a coupled system of partial differential equations and is solved with a combination of the Chebyshev collocation method and the extended proper orthogonal decomposition. The developed model and its numerical implementation allow us to study properties of nanostructures and several representative examples of mechanical behavior of nanostructures are discussed.

Abstract:The structure of nano-particle aggregates can be described in terms of the concepts of fractal geometry. The basic computer models are divided into particle-cluster and cluster-cluster aggregation models. The former is suitable for aggregation on electrode surface and the latter has practical application in the ordinary nano-particles system in gas and liquid. Varieties of models,such as diffusion-limited,reaction-limited,electrostatic and restructured models,are proposed for special aggregation with different determining factors.

Abstract:Nanoparticles in microscopy images are usually analyzed qualitatively or manually and there is a need for autonomous quantitative analysis of these objects. In this paper, we present a physics-based computational model for accurate segmentation and geometrical analysis of one-dimensional deformable overlapping objects from microscopy images. This model, named Nano1D, has four steps of preprocessing, segmentation, separating overlapped objects and geometrical measurements. The model is tested on SEM images of Ag and Au nanowire taken from different microscopes, and thermally fragmented Ag nanowires transformed into nanoparticles with different lengths, diameters, and population densities. It successfully segments and analyzes their geometrical characteristics including lengths and average diameter. The function of the algorithm is not undermined by the size, number, density, orientation and overlapping of objects in images. The main strength of the model is shown to be its ability to segment and analyze overlapping objects successfully with more than 99% accuracy, while current machine learning and computational models suffer from inaccuracy and inability to segment overlapping objects. Benefiting from a graphical user interface, Nano1D can analyze 1D nanoparticles including nanowires, nanotubes, nanorods in addition to other 1D features of microstructures like microcracks, dislocations etc.

Abstract:Modeling and simulation of nano-devices can be used to study and predict the performance of the nanoscale devices and play an increasingly important role in understanding the working mechanisms of devices and improving their performance. Since the MOSFET device size shrinks to nanoscale, the performance of nano-devices is increasingly affected by various quantum effects and nanoscale material properties. Quantum theoretical simulation methods based on quantum effects have been developed to research the new nano-devices. This chapter describes several modeling and simulation methods of nano-devices, including Monte Carlo simulation, nonequilibrium Green’s function (NEGF), molecular dynamics simulation, first principles method, density functional theory, and atomic device simulation. The basic principle of simulation methods and application potential are briefly introduced.

Abstract:Single-walled carbon nanotubes are readily observable in a scanning electron microscope, which traditional models fail to explain. We present an ab initio model to explain how the electron beam can interact with these structures despite the very small, nanoscale, interaction volume. In particular, we show how the electron beam can generate very strong secondary electron emission from the tip of a nanotube under external electric field. The approach may also be used in modeling the interaction of charged particles with nanostructures in other applications such as electron detection.

Abstract:In order to illustrate how atomistic modeling is being used to determine the structure, physical, and chemical properties of materials at the nanoscale, we present here the results of molecular dynamics (MD) simulations on nanoscale assemblies of such materials as carbon nanotubes, diamond surfaces, metal alloy nanowires, and ceramics. We also include here the results of nonequilibrium MD simulations on the nanorheology of a monolayer of wear inhibitor self-assembled on two metal oxide surfaces, separated by hexadecane lubricant, and subjected to steady state shear. We also present recent developments in force fields (FF) required to describe bond breaking and phase transformations in such systems. We apply these to study of plasticity in metal alloy nanowires where we find that depending on the strain rate, the wire may deform plastically (forming twins), neck and fracture, or transition to the amorphous phase.

Abstract:Nanostructures are widely used in nano and micro-sized systems and devices such as biosensors, nano actuators, nano-probes, and nano-electro-mechanical systems. The complete understanding of the mechanical behavior of nanostructures is crucial for the design of nanodevices and systems. Therefore, the flexural, stability and vibration analysis of various nanostructures such as nanowires, nanotubes, nanobeams, nanoplates, graphene sheets and nanoshells has received a great attention in recent years. The focus has been made, to present the structural analysis of nanostructures under thermo-magneto-electro-mechanical loadings under various boundary and environmental conditions. This paper also provides an overview of analytical modeling methods, fabrication procedures, key challenges and future scopes of development in the direction of analysis of such structures, which will be helpful for appropriate design and analysis of nanodevices for the application in the various fields of nanotechnology.

Abstract:In this study, atomic force microscope (AFM) tips are used as tools to cut and manipulate carbon nanotubes on various surfaces. The lateral forces acting on AFM tips during manipulation are also recorded and analyzed from the perspective of micro-mechanics. It is found that differences in surface conditions can lead to obvious increase in micro-friction between nanotube and substrate. And also due to rehybridization, carbon nanotubes present excellent resilience when undergoing different degrees of strain. Finally, carbon nanotubes can complexly deform from elastic stage to plastic stage before complete rupture.

Abstract:A review of different modeling techniques, specifically in the framework of carbon-based nanomaterials (CNMs, including nanoparticles such as graphene and carbon nanotubes—CNTs) and the composites and devices that can be derived from them, is presented. The article emphasizes that the overall performance of these materials depends on mechanisms that operate across different time and spatial scales, requiring tailored approaches based on the material type, size, internal structure/configuration, and the specific properties of interest. Far from attempting to cover the entire spectrum of models, this review examines a wide range of analysis and simulation techniques, highlighting their potential use, some of their weaknesses and strengths, and presenting the latest developments and some application examples. In this way, it is shown how modeling can provide key information for tailoring or designing new materials for specific components or systems or to obtain certain functionalities. At the same time, it is revealed to be an area constantly undergoing development and improvement, as evidenced by the progress made by various of these techniques and the new modeling approaches that have emerged in recent years.

Abstract:Nanorobotic manipulation technique has been regarded as one of the most dominating approaches to upgrade the functions of microscope benefits from its complex and precise operation system. At the current stage, although atomic force microscopy (AFM) is capable of mapping specimens on a two-dimensional/partial three-dimensional (3-D) plane, a full orientation of 360 <inline-formula xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink"><tex-math notation="LaTeX">$^{\circ }$</tex-math></inline-formula> characterization still remains a challenge for AFM. Taking advantage of a nanorobotic manipulation system (NMS), 360 <inline-formula xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink"><tex-math notation="LaTeX">$^{\circ }$</tex-math></inline-formula> mapping and 3-D reconstruction of topography and nanomechanical properties are presented in this paper. Compared with recent advances of AFM mapping techniques, our proposed method is able to realize effective, large area characterization and integral results can be directly perceived through 3-D reconstruction. In this paper, a six degrees-of-freedom NMS assembled inside AFM and task specification are first proposed. Second, home positioning method for effective specimen rotation scanning is introduced. Third, 3-D reconstruction methods for the topography and nanomechanical properties of the specimen are presented. After that, 360 <inline-formula xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink"><tex-math notation="LaTeX">$^{\circ }$</tex-math></inline-formula> characterization of three different types of specimens, human hair (anisotropic biological material), trapezoidal cantilever, and conical micropipette (isotropic inorganic material) are adopted to demonstrate the feasibility and practicability of our proposed system. Finally, the 3-D reconstruction results of selected specimens are analyzed. This paper fills the blank of current AFM topography and nanomechanical characterization methodologies, which is expected to give a long-term impact in the fundamental nanomaterial research and practical micro/nano characterization.

NEMO5 is a nanoelectronics modeling package designed for comprehending the critical multi-scale, multi-physics phenomena through efficient computational approaches and quantitatively modeling new generations of nanoelectronic devices as well as predicting novel device architectures and phenomena. This article seeks to provide updates on the current status of the tool and new functionality, including advances in quantum transport simulations and with materials such as metals, topological insulators, and piezoelectrics.

Abstract:Modern nanotechnology provides efficient and cost-effective nanomaterials (NMs). The increasing usage of NMs arises great concerns regarding nanotoxicity in humans. Traditional animal testing of nanotoxicity is expensive and time-consuming. Modeling studies using machine learning (ML) approaches are promising alternatives to direct evaluation of nanotoxicity based on nanostructure features. However, NMs, including two-dimensional nanomaterials (2DNMs) such as graphenes, have complex structures making them difficult to annotate and quantify the nanostructures for modeling purposes. To address this issue, we constructed a virtual graphenes library using nanostructure annotation techniques. The irregular graphene structures were generated by modifying virtual nanosheets. The nanostructures were digitalized from the annotated graphenes. Based on the annotated nanostructures, geometrical nanodescriptors were computed using Delaunay tessellation approach for ML modeling. The partial least square regression (PLSR) models for the graphenes were built and validated using a leave-one-out cross-validation (LOOCV) procedure. The resulted models showed good predictivity in four toxicity-related endpoints with the coefficient of determination (R 2 ) ranging from 0.558 to 0.822. This study provides a novel nanostructure annotation strategy that can be applied to generate high-quality nanodescriptors for ML model developments, which can be widely applied to nanoinformatics studies of graphenes and other NMs.
