Abstract:Nanostructured materials exhibit superior physical and mechanical properties, and they hold great promise for enabling the development of novel micro/nano electro-mechanical systems. A fundamental understanding of the mechanical deformation and degradation in nanostructured materials is critical for designing the damage-tolerant nanostructures and devices. The in situ transmission electron microscopy provides a novel approach to uncover the dynamic deformation mechanisms in nanostructured materials, especially at the atomic scale. This review presents an overview of recent progress in the atomic-scale study of mechanical properties, dynamic deformation and degradation in a variety of nanostructured materials. Experimental techniques for in situ nanomechanical testing are reviewed. New insights into the atomic-level mechanical behavior of nanostructured materials are described, including surface-mediated defect processes, size-dependent deformation mechanisms, plastic deformation of nanotwinned and nanocrystalline materials, phase transformation, liquid-like behavior and pseudoelasticity, bending and fatigue, etc. Future research on the in situ nanomechanics is also discussed. Ultimately, the in situ nanomechanics study will enable a complete understanding of the atomic-scale dynamic deformation, thereby providing a mechanistic basis of the rational design and fabrication of durable nanomaterials and nanodevices.
Achieving High Strength and High Ductility in Nanostructured Metals: Experiment and Modelling

Abstract:Engineering nanostructures in metallic materials such as nanograins and nanotwins can promote plastic performance significantly. Nano/ultrafine-grained metals embedded in coarse grains called bimodal metals and nanotwinned polycrystalline metals have been proved to possess extensively improved yield strength whilst keeping good ductility. This paper will present an experimental study on nanostructured stainless steel prepared by surface mechanical attrition treatment (SMAT) with surface impacts of lower strain rate (10 s−1–103 s−1) and higher strain rate (104 s−1–105 s−1). Microstructure transition has been observed from the original γ-austenite coarse grains to α′-martensite nanograins with bimodal grain size distribution for lower strain rates to nanotwins in the ultrafine/coarse grained austenite phase for higher strain rates. Meanwhile, we will further address the mechanism-based plastic models to describe the yield strength, strain hardening and ductility in nanostructured metals with bimodal grain size distribution and nanotwinned polycrystalline metals. The proposed theoretical models can comprehensively describe the plastic deformation in these two kinds of nanostructured metals and excellent agreement is achieved between the numerical and experimental results. These models can be utilized to optimize the strength and ductility in nanostructured metals by controlling the size and distribution of nanostructures.
Void Configuration-Induced Change in Microstructure and Deformation Mechanisms of Nano-Porous Materials

Abstract:Void configuration plays an essential role in the deformation behavior of ductile metals; its effects on intervoid interference has not been investigated systematically until now. In the present study, molecular dynamics simulation was employed to study the void configuration-induced change in mechanical properties and deformation mechanisms during tensile loading. The results show that void configuration has a significant influence on the yield stress and yield strain, while its effect on the elastic modulus is about 3.14 ± 0.23%. The deformation mechanisms of porous materials with various void configurations at micro- and nanoscale are proposed: (i) local plastic deformation and (ii) homogeneous plastic deformation. Further analysis indicates that the difference between the above two deformation mechanisms is mainly caused by the competition and synergy between the stacking faults and dislocation. Local plastic deformation is mainly controlled by stacking faults. Homogeneous plastic deformation is dominated by dislocation motion with only a small amount of stacking shear motion, which gives material a superior plastic elongation. The result is of great value for improving the plasticity limit of nanostructures.

Abstract:While conventional mechanics of materials offers a passive understanding of the mechanical properties of materials in existing forms, a paradigm shift, referred to as mechanomaterials, is emerging to enable the proactive programming of materials' properties and functionalities by leveraging force-geometry-property relationships. One of the foundations of this new paradigm is nanomechanics, which permits functional and structural materials to be designed based on principles from the nanoscale and beyond. Although the field of mechanomaterials is still in its infancy at the present time, we discuss the current progress in three specific directions closely linked to nanomechanics and provide perspectives on these research foci by considering the potential research directions, chances for success, and existing research capabilities. We believe this new research paradigm will provide future materials solutions for infrastructure, healthcare, energy, and environment.

Abstract:A systematic investigation is being performed to understand the combined size, loading rate and thermal effects on the responses of nanostructures such as nanofilms and nanowires. This paper summarizes what has been found so far, and presents the recent molecular dynamics simulations of the mechanical behaviors of single crystal fcc nanowires and nanofilms under different temperatures and extremely high strain rates. Based on the model‐based simulation results, the mechanism of the nanostructural responses will be explored and future research tasks will be discussed.

Abstract:A material's properties are derived from its constituent material composition and its structural hierarchy across length scales down to the nanometer level. At submicron length scales, materials exhibit unique size-affected mechanical properties such as enhanced strength, ductility, and flaw tolerance, but these are generally lost in bulk materials. Emerging fabrication methods have enabled the creation of materials with controllable architectures down to the nanoscale. These micro- and nanoarchitected materials utilize both resilient architectures and size-affected constituent materials to achieve unprecedented mechanical properties such as ultrahigh strength at low density, recoverability after large applied strains in intrinsically brittle materials, and metamaterial properties such as chirality and negative static compressibility. In this article, we describe the governing principles behind these materials and outline recent progress in the field. We unravel the details of the deformation and failure processes to facilitate a fundamental understanding of effective materials properties and provide a guideline for the design of the next generation of nanoarchitected materials.
Atomistic dynamics of disconnection-me diate d grain boundary plasticity: A case study of gold nanocrystals

Abstract:Grain boundary (GB) mediated deformation is a vital contributor to the plasticity of polycrystalline ma-terials, where the disconnection model has become a widely recognized approach to depict the GB dy-namics. However, experimental understanding of the atomistic disconnection dynamics remains scarce. In this case study of gold nanocrystals, atomistic disconnection dynamics governing the shear-coupled migration of flat GBs have been systematically investigated via in situ transmission electron microscopy nanomechanical testing supported by molecular dynamics simulations. Specifically, the site-dependent nucleation, shear-driven propagation, and diverse interactions associated with distinct GB disconnec-tions are systematically elucidated and quantitatively compared. Moreover, the disconnection-mediated GB plasticity proves to prevail among different tilt and mixed GBs in gold. Eventually, a conceptual map of disconnection-mediated GB dynamics is established, which would furnish a unified understanding of GB plasticity in metallic materials. Abstract:Using our recently developed in situ transmission electron microscopy techniques, we revealed that the FCC structured Ni nanowires with diameter of about 30 nm possess ultra-large strain plasticity. Dynamic complex dislocation activities mediated the large strain bent-plasticity and they were monitored at atomic scale in real time. The bent-induced strain gradient allows studying the strain effects on dislocation mediated plasticity. We also explored the deformation techniques to more general cases, the nano thin films. An example of tensile Pt ultra-thin film is presented.

Abstract:In situ nanomechanics, referring to the real-time monitoring of nanomechanical deformation during quantitative mechanical testing, is a key technology for understanding the physical and mechanical properties of nanoscale materials. This perspective reviews the progress of in situ nanomechanics from the aspects of preparation and testing of nanosamples, with a major focus on one-dimensional (1D) nanostructures and discussions of their challenges. We highlight the opportunities provided by in situ nanomechanics combined with the superplastic nanomolding technique, especially in the aspects of regulating physical and chemical properties which are highly exploitable for mechanoelectronics, mechanoluminescence, piezoelectronics, piezomagnetism, piezothermography, and mechanochemistry.

Abstract:Sub-micron and nanostructured materials exhibit high strength, ultra-large elasticity and unusual plastic deformation behaviors. These properties are important for their applications as building blocks for the fabrication of nano-and micro-devices as well as for their use as components for composite materials, high-strength structural and novel functional materials. These nano-related deformation and mechanical behaviors, which are derived from possible size and dimensional effects and the low density of defects, are considerably different from their conventional bulk counterparts. The atomic-scale understanding of the microstructural evolution process of nanomaterials when they are subjected to external stress is crucial for understanding these 'unusual' phenomena and is important for designing new materials, novel structures and applications. This review presents the recent developments in the methods, techniques, instrumentation and scientific progress for atomic-scale in situ deformation dynamics on nanomaterials, including nanowires, nanotubes, nanocrystals, nanofilms and polycrystalline nanomaterials. The unusual dislocation initiation, partial-full dislocation transition, crystalline-amorphous transitions and fracture phenomena related to the experimental mechanics of the nanomaterials are reviewed. Current limitations and future aspects using in situ high-resolution transmission electron microscopy of nanomaterials are also discussed. Abstract:The past 2 decades have witnessed the explosion of research on two-dimensional (2D) materials, where notable efforts have been made in the synthesis and design of a wide spectrum of applications. To understand their mechanical properties and responses triggered by deformation, the prerequisites for reliable applications under realistic service conditions, novel experimental methods have to be developed due to the limitations of traditional bulk mechanical testing for atomically-thin structures. Besides, the nearly-ideal 2D crystalline structures of many 2D materials endow them the great capability of deformation, showing promising potentials in “strain engineering” and “interface engineering” applications. This review summaries several representative approaches in experimental nanomechanics and corresponding progresses in the characterization of structural and mechanical properties of 2D materials, with the aim to provide insights into the instrumental design for nanomechanical tests. In addition, examples of strain-tuned material behaviors and changes in their performance are also discussed to demonstrate the significance of the nanomechanical approach for functional device design and applications.

Abstract:Polymer nanocomposites exhibiting remarkable mechanical properties are a focus of research for decades in structural applications. However, their practical application faces challenges due to poor interfacial load transfer, nanofiller dispersion, and processing limitations. These issues are critical in achieving stiff, strong, lightweight, and structurally integrated materials. Additionally, they often suffer from predetermined properties, which may not be effective under specific loading conditions. Addressing these challenges, the development of design strategies for mechano-responsive materials has advanced, enabling self-adaptive properties that respond to various mechanical stimuli. Drawing inspiration from natural systems, these approaches have been implemented in synthetic material systems, leveraging the design flexibility of nanocomposites as needed. Key focus areas include exploring mechanoradical reactions for dynamic mechano-responsiveness, as well as utilizing biomimetic mineralization and mechanical training for self-strengthening. This work also examines multistability, enabling on-demand deformation of materials and structures. Recent advancements in viscoelastic damping and nonreciprocal materials are discussed, highlighting their potential for directional energy absorption, transmission, and vibration control. Despite the need for significant improvements for real-world applications, mechano-responsive polymers and nanocomposites are expected to offer enormous opportunities not only in structural applications but also in other fields such as biomedical engineering, energy harvesting, and soft robotics.
