Abstract:Nanostructured materials exhibit superior physical and mechanical properties, and they hold great promise for enabling the development of novel micro/nano electro-mechanical systems. A fundamental understanding of the mechanical deformation and degradation in nanostructured materials is critical for designing the damage-tolerant nanostructures and devices. The in situ transmission electron microscopy provides a novel approach to uncover the dynamic deformation mechanisms in nanostructured materials, especially at the atomic scale. This review presents an overview of recent progress in the atomic-scale study of mechanical properties, dynamic deformation and degradation in a variety of nanostructured materials. Experimental techniques for in situ nanomechanical testing are reviewed. New insights into the atomic-level mechanical behavior of nanostructured materials are described, including surface-mediated defect processes, size-dependent deformation mechanisms, plastic deformation of nanotwinned and nanocrystalline materials, phase transformation, liquid-like behavior and pseudoelasticity, bending and fatigue, etc. Future research on the in situ nanomechanics is also discussed. Ultimately, the in situ nanomechanics study will enable a complete understanding of the atomic-scale dynamic deformation, thereby providing a mechanistic basis of the rational design and fabrication of durable nanomaterials and nanodevices.

Abstract:While conventional mechanics of materials offers a passive understanding of the mechanical properties of materials in existing forms, a paradigm shift, referred to as mechanomaterials, is emerging to enable the proactive programming of materials' properties and functionalities by leveraging force-geometry-property relationships. One of the foundations of this new paradigm is nanomechanics, which permits functional and structural materials to be designed based on principles from the nanoscale and beyond. Although the field of mechanomaterials is still in its infancy at the present time, we discuss the current progress in three specific directions closely linked to nanomechanics and provide perspectives on these research foci by considering the potential research directions, chances for success, and existing research capabilities. We believe this new research paradigm will provide future materials solutions for infrastructure, healthcare, energy, and environment.

Abstract:The development of modern cutting-edge technology relies heavily on the huge success and advancement of nanotechnology, in which nanomaterials and nanostructures provide the indispensable material cornerstone. Owing to their nanoscale dimensions with possible quantum limit, nanomaterials and nanostructures possess a high surface-to-volume ratio, rich surface/interface effects, and distinct physical and chemical properties compared with their bulk counterparts, leading to the remarkably expanded horizons of their applications. Depending on their degree of spatial quantization, low-dimensional nanomaterials are generally categorized into nanoparticles (0D); nanorods, nanowires, and nanobelts (1D); and atomically thin layered materials (2D). This review article provides a comprehensive guide to low-dimensional nanomaterials and nanostructures. It begins with the classification of nanomaterials, followed by an inclusive account of nanofabrication and characterization. Both top-down and bottom-up fabrication approaches are discussed in detail. Next, various significant applications of low-dimensional nanomaterials are discussed, such as photonics, sensors, catalysis, energy storage, diverse coatings, and various bioapplications. This article would serve as a quick and facile guide for scientists and engineers working in the field of nanotechnology and nanomaterials.

Abstract:The past 2 decades have witnessed the explosion of research on two-dimensional (2D) materials, where notable efforts have been made in the synthesis and design of a wide spectrum of applications. To understand their mechanical properties and responses triggered by deformation, the prerequisites for reliable applications under realistic service conditions, novel experimental methods have to be developed due to the limitations of traditional bulk mechanical testing for atomically-thin structures. Besides, the nearly-ideal 2D crystalline structures of many 2D materials endow them the great capability of deformation, showing promising potentials in “strain engineering” and “interface engineering” applications. This review summaries several representative approaches in experimental nanomechanics and corresponding progresses in the characterization of structural and mechanical properties of 2D materials, with the aim to provide insights into the instrumental design for nanomechanical tests. In addition, examples of strain-tuned material behaviors and changes in their performance are also discussed to demonstrate the significance of the nanomechanical approach for functional device design and applications.

Abstract:<p>The knowledge of mechanics of materials has been extensively implemented in developing functional materials, giving rise to recent advances in soft actuators, flexible electronics, mechanical metamaterials, tunable mechanochromics, regenerative mechanomedicine, etc. While conventional mechanics of materials offers passive access to mechanical properties of materials in existing forms, a paradigm shift is emerging toward proactive programming of materials' functionality by leveraging the force–geometry–property relationships. Here, such a rising field is coined as "mechanomaterials". To profile the concept, the design principles in this field at four scales is first outlined, namely the atomic scale, the molecular scale, the manipulation of nanoscale materials, and the microscale design of structural materials. A variety of techniques have been recruited to deliver the multiscale programming of functional mechanomaterials, such as strain engineering, capillary assembly, topological interlocking, kirigami, origami, to name a few. Engineering optical and biological functionalities have also been achieved by implementing the fundamentals of mechanochemistry and mechanobiology. Nonetheless, the field of mechanomaterials is still in its infancy, with many open challenges and opportunities that need to be addressed. The authors hope this review can serve as a modest spur to attract more researchers to further advance this field.</p>

The current research progress and application range of nano-materials are presented. The unique properties of nano-materials make them superior over traditional materials. Abstract:Nanomaterials have shown more and more unique size-dependent properties that are different from their bulk counterparts.With the reduction in material size,the specific surface area of materials and the exposure of atoms show a sharp increase.Especially,when the size of materials reduces to a critical size,qualitative changes would occur,giving rise to changes in electronic and band structures,further leading to more new and excellent properties emerging.Particularly,sub-1 nm,as an important feature size in the field of material science,is close to the diameter of a single polymer or DNA chain,as well as the size of a single cluster or single unit cell of inorganic nanocrystals.

Abstract:Over the past several decades, lattice materials have been developed and used as engineering materials for lightweight and stiff industrial structures. Recent advances in additive manufacturing techniques have prompted the emergence of architected materials with minimum characteristic sizes ranging from several micrometers to hundreds of nanometers. Taking advantage of the topological design, structural optimization, and size effects of nanomaterials, various 3D micro‐/nanolattice materials composed of different materials exhibit combinations of superior mechanical properties, such as low density, high strength (even approaching the theoretical limits), large deformability, good recoverability, and flaw tolerance. As a result, some micro‐/nanolattices occupy an unprecedented area in Ashby charts with a combination of different material properties. Here, recent advances in the fabrication and mechanics of micro‐/nanolattices are described. First, various design principles and advanced techniques used for the fabrication of micro‐/nanolattices are summarized. Then, the mechanical behaviors and properties of micro‐/nanolattices are further described, including the compressive Young's modulus, strength, energy absorption, recoverability, and tensile behavior, with an emphasis on mechanistic insights and origins. Finally, the main challenges in the fabrication and mechanics of micro‐/nanolattices are addressed and an outlook for further investigations and potential applications of micro‐/nanolattices in the future is provided.

Abstract:This paper provides a comprehensive review on the methodological development and technical applications of in situ microscopy, including transmission electron microscopy (TEM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and atomic force microscopy (AFM), developed in the last decade for investigating the structure-mechanical-property relationship of a single one-dimensional nanomaterial, such as nanotube, nanowire and nanobelt. The paper covers both the fundamental methods and detailed applications, including AFM-based static elastic and plastic measurements of a carbon nanotube, external field-induced resonance dynamic measurement of elastic modulus of a nanotube/nanowire, nano-indentation, and in situ plastic deformation process of a nanowire. Details are presented on the elastic property measurements and direct imaging of plastic to superplastic behavior of semiconductor nanowires at atomic resolution, providing quantitative information on the mechanical behavior of nanomaterials. The studies on the Si and SiC nanowires clearly demonstrated their distinct, "unexpected" and superior plastic mechanical properties. Finally, a perspective is given on the future of nanomechanics.

Abstract:In situ transmission electron microscopy has achieved remarkable advances for atomic-scale dynamic analysis in low-dimensional materials and become an indispensable tool in view of linking a material's microstructure to its properties and performance. Here, accompanied with some cutting-edge researches worldwide, we briefly review our recent progress in dynamic atomistic characterization of low-dimensional materials under external mechanical stress, thermal excitations and electrical field. The electron beam irradiation effects in metals and metal oxides are also discussed. We conclude by discussing the likely future developments in this area.
MECHANICAL BEHAVIOR OF NANOCRYSTALLINE METALS

Abstract:Nanocrystalline metals are defined as metals with an average grain size in the (1-100) nm range. Because of their potential applications in mechanics, thermodynamics, acoustics, electronics, and magnetics, etc, their manufacture and research have been an important frontier, both in materials science and the related fields. Their relative simple microstructures and characterizing parameters impose a fundamental meaning in theoretical studies. The three-dimensional topology of nanocrystalline metals is similar to their conventional counterparts. However, for the extremely small grain size, the volume fraction of grain boundaries increases greatly, which will lead to different mechanical properties from coarse-grained metals. Moreover, when the characterized lengths of the microscopic physical processes compare to the grain size, the related properties will be modulated and thus different from well-known ones. In this paper, we present some new developments of preparation, mechanical properties and plastic deformation mechanisms in nanocrystalline metals and discuss the relationships between microscopic structures and mechanical properties.

Abstract:Nanomechanics understandings for nanostructures are critical not only for their integrity concerns but also for their utilization. Attention here is focused on two types of low-dimensional materials, graphene and nanocrystals, with characteristic lengths in nanometers or even angstrom scales. In nanocrystals, the dislocation mechanism is suppressed, and their plasticity is dictated by diffusive atomistic flow along the grain boundaries. Nanomechanics models are developed for the plastic flow and fracture in nanocrystals. Simulations based on micro-structural evolution demonstrate the capability in predicting the brittle versus ductile transition of nanocrystal. To put this mechanism into atomistic images, in-situ tests of nano-crystalline gold were performed under HRTEM. We observe atoms flow along certain atomistic planes of the crack faces to facilitate the advance of the crack. This diffusion assisted mode, along with GB cavitations and cleavage, give a complete spectrum of defect evolutions in nanocrystals. Aside from the danger of degrading the nanostructures, defects in graphene may serve to enrich its functions. The functioning of pristine graphene is rather limited for exploration. Doping of graphene, however, can be achieved around their defects, such as vacancies and edges. We study the defect creation and evolution in graphene. A two-step method was devised for atomic doping of graphene: the first step consists of creating holes and vacancies in graphene by the bombardment of Au atoms, while the second step consists of doping atoms of various kinds to the edges of the hole, as well as into the atomic vacancies. These doping atoms serve to functionalize the edges and to create catalysts in the form of single atom arrays. The mechanics of graphene is explored by monitoring the atom-resolved tearing in graphenes, and by elucidating the tailoring mechanisms of graphene nano-ribbon. We are able to create a two- dimensional iron film, termed ironene, with the constraining support from the graphene edges. The segregation of metallic clusters on a graphene sheet is also explored.

Abstract:In this article, we provide brief overview of how mechanics and computations play a role in understanding materials growth, creating new low-dimensional materials and exploring structural defects. First, we introduce a concept of screw dislocation for describing carbon nanotube growth and derive a kinetic relationship between growth rate and chiral angle. Deeper analysis of the subtle balance between the kinetic and thermodynamic views reveals sharply peaked distribution of near-armchair nanotubes, explaining puzzling (n, n-1) types observed experimentally. A combination of ab initio calculations and Monte Carlo models further explains the low symmetry shapes of graphene on substrates. Being monoatomic chains of carbon, carbynes are shown to be strong yet flexible, and undergo metal-semiconductor transition under tension, offering promising innovations for future nanotechnology. We then reveal how metal substrates could facilitate the formation of boron monolayers whose bulk counterparts are non-layered and lower in energy. Further remarks are given to High Burger's vector graphene defects called D-loops and interfaces in hybrid graphene-BN materials, both with significant out-of plane distortion and impact on the mechanical properties. All of these computationally modeled systems have significant implications for the future use of these nanomaterials.
