Abstract:Cerium dioxide (CeO2) nanocrystalline thin films were grown on glass substrates by pulsed-spray evaporation chemical vapor deposition (PSE-CVD) at temperatures of 350-500 degrees C. The X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis shows that films grown by this process crystallize in the cubic structure, with a preferred (200) orientation when grown above 450 degrees C. The crystallite size was observed to increase from 7.5 nm to 35 nm with increased deposition temperature. The growth activation energy changes from 50.2 kJ/mol in the range of 350-450 degrees C to 22.9 kJ/mol at 450-550 degrees C, indicating the change of the rate-limiting step from surface kinetics control to diffusion control. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) analysis shows uniform surface morphology for films prepared at the substrate temperatures of 400-500 degrees C. These films exhibit high transparency and band gap energies that are comparable to that of the bulk material (3.2 eV).

Abstract:The present work reports the rapid preparation of CeO2 nanorods by surfactant-free precipitation for the first time, which initiates a strategy for the quantitative elucidation of the importance of the exposed crystallographic planes and the oxygen vacancy concentrations of different morphologies of nanoceria. These relations are revealed through comparison of the relative surface areas of the exposed crystallographic planes. The precipitation temperature was critical in that nanooctahedra formed at the three lower temperatures and nanorods formed at the highest. The key feature to differentiate the photocatalytic performance was the morphology that the nanorods exhibit similar to 200% superior performance compared to those of the nanooctahedra. The principal reason for this is the presence of exposed {110} planes in the nanorods, which are not present in nanoctahedra. This crystallographic dependence of the improved performance of the nanorods is attributed directly to the greater oxygen vacancy concentration for the calculated surface area of this morphology.

Abstract:Single-crystalline ceria nanorods have been fabricated by self-assembly of ceria nanocrystals via a simple, low-temperature, and ligand-free approach. Detailed high-resolution transmission electron microscopy shows that the nanorods are formed along the [211] or [110] direction by self-organization of truncated octahedral ceria nanocrystals, sharing the {111} or {200} planes with each other, whereas the previous report shows that only the [110] direction exists in ceria nanorods. The nucleation temperature and molar ratio of Ce3+ and OH- also play key roles in the formation of ceria nanorods. Moreover, the formation mechanism was explained in detail.

Abstract:Ceria (CeO2) nanoparticles were successfully synthesized via a simple complex-precipitation route that employs cerium chloride as cerium source and citric acid as precipitant. The elemental analysis results of carbon, hydrogen, oxygen, and cerium in the precursors were calculated, and the results revealed that the precursors were composed of Ce(OH)3, Ce(H2Cit)3, or CeCit. X-ray diffraction analysis showed that all ceria nanoparticles had a face-centered cubic structure. With the molar ratio of citric acid to Ce3+ (n) of 0.25 and pH of 5.5, the specific surface area of the sample reached the maximum value of 83.17 m2/g. Ceria nanoparticles were observed by scanning electron microscopy. Selected area electron diffraction patterns of several samples were obtained by transmission electron microscopy, and the crystal plane spacing of each low-exponent crystal plane was calculated. The ultraviolet (UV)—visible transmittance curve showed that ceria can absorb UV light and pass through visible light. Among all samples, the minimum average transmittance of ultraviolet radiation a (UVA) was 4.42%, and that of ultraviolet radiation b (UVB) was 1.56%.

Abstract:We report a facile solution-based synthetic route to high-quality ultrathin cerium oxide nanorods with diameters of ~1.3 nm. High resolution transmission electron microscopy studies revealed that the nanorods were single-crystalline and grew along the [100] direction. The powder X-ray diffraction pattern of the final products indicated a cubic fluorite structure. The optical properties of the cerium oxide nanorods were explored by UV/Vis absorption and photoluminescence (PL) measurements at room temperature. The absorption edge of the ultrathin nanorods was obviously blue-shifted with respect to that of the bulk, suggesting the presence of size confinement resulted from the molecular-scale dimension of the nanorods. The current work is of interest for developing UV blocking and shielding materials, and would open up new opportunities for fundamental studies in the field of ultrathin nanorods and nanowires.

Abstract:Ceria nanorods enclosed with {110}/{100} planes and ceria nanocubes with {100} planes have been successfully prepared using a homemade microfluidic system in a continuous, ultrafast and shape-controllable manner. Only 8 min of reaction time are needed rather than days to synthesize ceria nanostructures in the traditional batch hydrothermal method. During the synthesis, reaction temperatures and base concentration have been demonstrated as the key factors responsible for the shape evolution. Accordingly, a morphological phase diagram was determined. In addition, polyvinylpyrrolidone was introduced to realize the transformation from ceria nanorods to nanocubes under unfavorable hydrothermal conditions. Catalytic performance of different CeO2 architectures was also examined in decomposing hydrogen peroxide and a reactivity trend (nanoparticles < nanorods < nonocubes) was observed. This is assumed to be related with different surface oxygen vacancy amounts as a result of {110}/{100} preferential planes, as confirmed by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and Raman analyses as well as density functional theory (DFT+U) calculations.
Facile Alcohothermal Synthesis, Size-Dependent Ultraviolet Absorption, and Enhanced CO Conversion Activity of Ceria Nanocrystals

Abstract:Uniform ceria nanocrystals with good crystallinity and high surface areas were prepared by a facile alcohothermal method with the addition of bases (KOH or NaOH), using Ce(III) or Ce(IV) salt as a starting material. The as-prepared nanocrystals were characterized by means of powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), high-resolution TEM (HRTEM), nitrogen adsorption, thermogravimetry and differential thermal analysis (TG-DTA), Fourier transformation infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and ultraviolet and visible spectroscopy (UV-vis). The ceria crystals had controllable sizes from 2.6 to 6.9 nm estimated by the PXRD line broadening analysis. TEM and HRTEM micrographs showed that the as-prepared ceria nanocrystals have a relatively high degree of crystallinity and low degree of conglomeration under high base concentrations. BET specific surface areas of the as-synthesized ceria nanocrystals were very high (103-238 m(2) g(-1)). XPS spectra indicated that the cerium in the nanocrystals was predominantly tetravalent. UV-vis spectra revealed that both the direct and indirect band gap energies of the as-prepared ceria nanocrystals showed a pronounced blue-shifting due to the quantum confinement effect compared to bulk ceria. And the dielectric confinement effect on the band gap energies was also discussed. The as-prepared ceria nanocrystals supported on gamma-Al2O3 exhibited a rather lower conversion temperature (559 K) for CO oxidation to CO2 than that of bulk catalysts prepared by the coprecipitation method. Finally, a hydrolytic alcohothermal mechanism for the preparation of ceria nanocrystals was forwarded.

Abstract:The crystal plane of ceria plays an essential role in determining its catalytic oxidation properties. In this study, single-crystalline CeO2 nanorods with well-defined crystal planes have been synthesized by a facile solution-based hydrothermal method. HRTEM studies reveal that the predominantly exposed planes are the unusually reactive {001} and {110} in the CeO2 nanorods rather than the stable {111} in the irregular nanoparticles. Consequently, it is demonstrated that the CeO2 nanorods are more reactive for CO oxidation than their counterparts, irregular nanoparticles. The present results indicate that catalysts with well-defined reactive sites may be “designed” because of the recent development of morphology-controlled synthesis of nanostructured materials.

Abstract:Pr-doped ceria solid solutions have attracted much attention as promising mixed electronic-ionic conductor and oxygen storage materials. However, little effort has been made to synthesize Pr-doped ceria with one-dimensional nanostructure. In this paper, Pr-doped ceria nanorods were prepared via a facile hydrothermal method using Pr(NO3)3, Ce(NO3)3 and NaOH as raw materials. X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and selected-area electron diffraction (SAED) indicated that the as-prepared Pr-doped ceria nanorods had a cubic fluorite structure, with the length around 200 ~ 400 nm and the diameters around 10 ~ 18 nm. The effect of alkaline concentration has been systematically studied and the results indicated that higher alkaline concentration was favorable for the formation of nanorods.

Abstract:Ceria (CeO2) nanowires have been successfully synthesized by a sonochemical method in ambient air and alkali aqueous solution from CeO2 nanoparticles without using any templates. The results showed that both alkali concentration and ultrasonic irradiation played critical roles in the formation of the nanowires. The crystalline structure and dimensions of the nanowires were characterized by powder X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) and selected area electron diffraction (SAED). The UV-visible absorption spectrum result showed that the products had conspicuous shape-specific effect. Microstructural analysis in HRTEM revealed that the preferential growth direction of CeO2 nanowires was [110]. Moreover, the catalytic activity of Au/CeO2 using CeO2 nanowires as support for CO conversion was higher than that obtained using bulk CeO2 as support.

Abstract:CeO2 nanorods with a polycrystalline structure were prepared by galvanostatic electrodeposition using TiO2 nanotube arrays as templates. The heterogeneous nucleation and subsequent growth of CeO2 nanorods are an electric field-assisted process, which depend upon the current density and electrolyte concentration. At low electric field intensity, amorphous nanoparticles are formed; whereas, at high electric field intensity, a layer of dense film is deposited (caused by the overgrowth of CeO2). By using an optimum electrochemical condition, namely current density of 0.1 mA/cm2 and Ce(Cl)(3) solution concentration of 0.5 mmol/L, moderate electric field intensity can be obtained to grow the CeO2 nanorod-TiO2 nanotube hybrid nanostructure.

Abstract:Nanocrystalline ceria (CeO2) particles have been successfully prepared via sonochemical and microwave assisted heating routes from aqueous solutions containing (NH4)2Ce(NO3)6, hexamethylenetetramine and poly (ethylene glycol)-19000 (PEG). The products were characterized by techniques such as powder X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, high-resolution transmission electron microscopy, selected area electron diffraction, Brunauer–Emmett–Teller nitrogen adsorption and UV–Visible absorption spectroscopy. Analysis of the results showed that the products had uniform shape, narrow size distribution and displayed conspicuous quantum size effects.

Abstract:Controllable preparation of ceria nanotube was realized by hydrothermal treatment of Ce(OH)CO3 precursors. The gradually changing morphologies and microstructures of cerium oxide were characterized by X-ray powder diffraction, scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy. A top-down path is illuminated to have an insight to the morphological transformation from nanorod to nanotube by adjusting the reaction time. The growth process is investigated by preparing a series of intermediate morphologies during the shape evolution of CeO2 nanostructure based on the scanning electron microscopy image observation. On the basis of the time-dependent experimental observation, the possible formation mechanism related to oriented attachment and Oswald ripening was proposed, which might afford some guidance for the synthesis of other inorganic nanotubes.

Abstract:Cyclic voltammetry, chronoamperometry in conjunction with scanning electron microscopy and atomic force microscopy techniques have been performed to study the anodic electrodeposition behavior of ceria films onto 316L stainless steel substrate. Results show that the deposition process of ceria is controlled by diffusion under our experimental conditions. The dominated nucleation and growth mechanism for CeO2 deposition transforms from two-dimensional (2D) to three-dimensional (3D) with increasing the deposition time, and 3D process starts prior to the completion of 2D layers. The poor conductivity of the preformed CeO2 film causes the high deposition overpotential and therefore refines the grain size of CeO2 particles.

Abstract:We report the simple Co-precipitation method for the synthesis of Cerium oxide (CeO2) nanoparticles (NPs) in an ambient temperature. We have taken the Cerium (III) nitrate hexahydrate (Ce(NO3)3.6H2O) and Sodium hydroxide (NaOH) as the precursors. The obtained NPs were analyzed using the UV-Vis spectrophotometer, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). The obtained results signify that UV-Vis spectrum exhibited a well-defined absorption peak at 274 nm and the estimated energy gap (Eg) is 4.05 eV. The FT-IR analysis provides the supporting evidence for the presence of bonding of O-H, nitrates, alcohols and O-Ce-O vibrations. The XRD result reveals that the synthesized CeO2 NPs was crystallite with cubic phase structure and the estimated average crystallite size of CeO2 NPs using Scherer’s and W-H method was significantly different due to their assumptions. Further, it is purposed to study their photocatalytic biological activities.

Abstract:Solid-state reactions have the potential for direct preparation of ceramic powders and offer a low-temperature and low-cost alternative to conventional techniques for production of oxide powders. This paper describes a simple and effective mechanochemical method based on solid-state reactions during ball milling for synthesis of nanoscaled ceria (CeO2) particles. By using an organic base instead of an inorganic base, metal-ion-free nanoscaled CeO2 can also be made. The effects of annealing temperature on particle sizes and lattice strain are investigated. The results show that the average particle sizes of the particles increases and the average crystal lattice distortion decreases with the annealing temperature. Transmission electron microscopy examinations demonstrate that the CeO2 particles synthesised by this method are near-spherical shaped.

Abstract:Cerium is one of the most abundant rare earth elements in both bastnasite and monazite. Ceria has been widely used in optical, catalytic, electrolyte, and sensor materials, with unique performances. With the development of functional materials, great interest has been focused on the synthesis and characterization of specific fine/mesoporous ceria powder. In this study, the modified precipitation and recrystallization processes combined with a controlled calcination process for fabricating the ceria with large particle size and high appearance density was reported. During precipitation, a certain amount of mineral acid such as nitric acid served as an additive, to adjust the precipitation and crystallization processes of cerium oxalates. An appropriate acidic condition could lead the process into the Oswald ripening stage and made the particles become bigger. Thus, the appearance density of powder was increased. The optimized conditions, such as the temperature, feeding speed, type and concentration of mineral acids, and the concentration of cerium-contained stock solution, were investigated and evaluated.

Abstract:Nanoscale CeO2 sheets were synthesized by a facile and green hydrothermal precipitation method in a strong alkali solution. The experimental results indicate that without any surfactant and template, nanoscale CeO2 sheets can be successfully synthesized simply by adding cerium nitrate into ammonia at room temperature. The Rietveld refinement analysis demonstrates that the synthesized CeO2 sheets have more defect structures than nanoparticles and nanorods. The photocatalytic performance of the CeO2 sheets was also evaluated by decomposing an azo dye, methyl orange. Compared with nanoparticles and nanorods, the synthesized CeO2 nanosheets exhibit higher photocatalytic activity during the degradation.
