Abstract:Quaternary CuInSSe nanocrystals have been synthesized by a colloidal route using commercially available materials. Oleylamine is used as the solvent and capping agent. It is proved that the nanocrystals are alloyed nanocrystals rather than a mixture of CuInS2 and CuInSe2 nanocystals. Furthermore, their formation is regarded to involve the nucleation of CuS and the subsequent reaction between CuS nuclei and remaining precursors. It is also found that the composition and structure of the nanocrystals can be influenced significantly by the reaction temperatures and time. © 2011 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract:Cu2FeSnS4 nanocrystals were cost-effectively synthesized by thermal reactions of metal salts and sulfur in a hot oleylamine solution. Stannite structured Cu2FeSnS4 nanocrystals with diameters of about 15-25 nm were obtained, analyzed by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The morphology of the continuous Cu2FeSnS4 thin films was characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and the average compositions of the nanocrystals were determined by energy dispersive X-ray analysis (EDX). High-resolution X-ray photoemission spectroscopy (XPS) analysis of the four constituent elements indicated Cu (I), Fe (II), Sn (IV) and sulfide ions. The band gap of as-synthesised Cu2FeSnS4 nanocrystals is about 1.33 eV determined by the UV-vis-NIR absorption spectra measurement, which indicates its possible solar cell applications. Abstract:The preparation of nanocrystalline Cu2SnS3 at synthetic conditions of low temperature (<180°C) was first reported. Nanocrystalline Cu2SnS3 was directly synthesized from the reaction of CuCl2·2H2O with elemental tin and sulfur through a solvothermal process in ethylenediamine at 140–180°C for 15 h. X-ray diffraction (XRD) patterns, transmission electron microscope (TEM) images, and X-ray photoelectron spectra (XPS) were used to characterize the products. The mechanism of the formation of the Cu2SnS3 nanocrystals in the solvothermal process was proposed. The UV–vis absorption spectroscopy and the electric conductivity of products were also studied.

Abstract:The novel polygonal flake like Ag8SnS6 crystal, Cu2FeSnS4 flaky, and well-dispersed Cu2CoSnS4 nanoparticles were successfully prepared via a convenient hydrothermal reaction route at relatively low temperature, which was avoiding the use of high temperature treatments or toxic organic solvents. The products were characterized by means of X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), transmission electronic microscopy (TEM), X-ray photoelectronic spectra (XPS) and inductively coupled plasma-atomic emission spectroscopy (ICP-AES). It was found that the reaction temperature played a key role for the formation of the target products.

Abstract:Colloidal Cu2CdSnS4 nanocrystals were synthesized by a facile solution chemistry method.Transmission electron microscopy (TEM),scanning electron microscopy (SEM),energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS),X-ray diffraction (XRD),X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and UV-vis-NIR absorbance spectroscopy measurements indicated that the Cu2 CdSnS4 colloidal nanocrystals have uniform size-distribution and good crystalline quality with a tetrahedral coordinated structure.The stoichiometric ratio Cu/Cd/Sn/S is about 2.07:0.75:1.26:3.92 in Cu2 CdSnS4 nanocrystals,and the chemical states of Cu,Cd,Sn and S elements are of + 1,+2,+4 and-2,which correspond with the states in the molecular formula of Cu2CdSnS4.The band gap of Cu2CdSnS4 nanocrystals is estimated to be ～ 1.3 eV by extrapolating method.

Abstract:High-quality Cu2ZnSnS4 nanocrystals with narrow size distribution were prepared via a facile hot-injection route by using simple inorganic metallic salt Cu(OAc)(2), Zn(OAc)(2) and SnCl4 as raw materials, stearic acid and octadecylamine as capping molecules and diphenyl ether as solvent. In this paper, we have studied in depth for the influence on the morphologies of the nanocrystals by changing the ratio of stearic acid and octadecylamine. It is shown that Cu2ZnSnS4 nanocrystals grow bigger and have complex nanostructures by increasing the amount of stearic acid. And this material has a strong absorption under the whole region from UV to visible lights. It is believed that Cu2ZnSnS4 has a potential application in photovoltaic devices.

Abstract:Multicomponent chalcogenide Cu-2(FexZn1-x)SnS4 nanocrystals were synthesized by a facile solution method. The ratio x of Fe/(Zn + Fe) can be tuned across the entire composition from 0 to 1 by rationally adjusting the Fe/ Zn ratio in metal sources. By varying the value of x, the band gap energy of nanocrystals can be readily tuned from 1.25 eV to 1.52 eV. XRD analysis indicates the structure transition from stannite to kesterite may occur at x = 0.4 for Cu-2(FexZn1-x)SnS4. In addition, photo-electrical conversion performance can be improved by partly substituting Zn with Fe in Cu2ZnSnS4.

Abstract:Nearly monodispersed wurtzite-dominant Cu2ZnSnS4 and zincblende-dominant Cu2ZnSnSe4 nanocrystals were successfully synthesized by mixing metal salts with heated thiourea or selenourea in oleylamine. A perspective of the structural relationship between quaternary and ternary semiconductors was investigated through the application of different anion sources to prepare Cu2SnS3 and Cu2SnSe3 nanocrystals. Investigations on copper-based binary compounds found that CuSe (or CuS) and Cu2Se (or Cu1.96S, Cu9S5) nuclei were primarily responsible for the formation of zincblende or wurtzite structures, respectively. Further management over these binary intermediates corresponded to slight structural transformations of the quaternary nanocrystals which could be observed not only in XRD patterns, but from optical and electrical properties as well. According to these results, Cu2ZnGeS4 nanocrystals with wurtzite-dominant structures were first reported using SC(NH2)(2), which also verified that the binary semiconductors are the determinative factors.

Abstract:In this work, Cu–Sb–S nanocrystals (NCs) with various compositions and crystal structures are realized by only tuning the amount of 1-dodecanethiol (DDT). When the DDT amount is 3.6, 5.5, 20.5, and 25.6 mmol, pure tetragonal Cu3SbS4, cubic Cu12Sb4S13, orthorhombic CuSbS2, and orthorhombic Cu3SbS3 NCs are respectively obtained. Systematic investigations demonstrate that different amounts of DDT are responsible for formation of the different compositions and crystal structures of the initial Cu2−xS seeds, which results into the formation of various Cu–Sb–S NCs. This reaction path is further verified by control experiments from successful preparation of Cu–Sb–S NCs comparable to that of the as-prepared ones directly from the reaction of Sb2S3 NCs with Cu2−xS seeds. The current study not only provides a facile and economical way to synthesize high-quality Cu–Sb–S NCs, but also opens a new route for preparation other I–V–VI multicomponent chalcogenides NCs, such as Cu–Bi–S systems.
