Abstract:On the basis of Kirkendall Effect, high symmetric 18-facet polyhedral nanocrystals of Cu7S4 with a hollow nanocage could be converted from cubic nanocrystals of Cu2O in an aqueous media. The presence of organic additives makes the surface energy of {110} smaller than those of {100} and {111}. The growth of nanocrystals along the normal direction of highest energy surface {100} leads to the formation of a 18-facet polyhedron.

Abstract:Novel polyhedral 26-facet CuS microcages decorated with amazingly unique crystalline structures as building blocks were successfully synthesized via a facile sacrificial Cu2O templates solution route. Each of the polyhedral 26-facet CuS microcages has a composition of three pairs of square mesostructural shells, four pairs of nanotwinned triangular shells, and six pairs of rectangular single crystalline shells. Structural and morphological evolutions were investigated by X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, and scanning electron microscopy. The selective synthesis of the three different types of building blocks can be attributed to the intrinsic difference of the crystallographic structures of {110}, {100} and {111} facets of Cu2O crystals, which is of great significance in the "bottom-up'' assembly of unusual hollow ordering superstructures.

Abstract:Novel highly symmetric multi-faceted polyhedral Cu2O crystals enclosed by controllable high-index facets and different low-index facets have been synthesized via a template-free complex-precursor solution route. The formation and evolution of these polyhedral shapes can be attributed to the aggregation and ripening mechanism with face-selective adsorption. The appearance of these novel polyhedral architectures further enriches the current morphologies of Cu2O crystals, and might become useful for the fundamental study of crystals design.

Abstract:A novel type of high symmetric 26-facet polyhedral microcrystals of Cu2O with well-developed {100}, {110}, {111} crystallographic faces are successfully synthesized in a properly selected reaction medium. These polyhedra exhibit a core-shell structure. An aqueous solution containing CuCl2 center dot 2H(2)O, sodium citrate (C6H5Na3O7 center dot 2H(2)O) complexing agent, glucose reductant, sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) surfactant, NaOH, and ethylene glycol (EG) constitutes the functional medium. By altering the EG to the water volume ratio, polyhedral, quasi-cubic, octahedral microcrystals are obtained directly. SDS, EG and C6H5Na3O7 center dot 2H(2)O have been confirmed to be the necessary additives to the development of different crystallographic planes. A possible growth mechanism involving aggregation of seed particles, oriented attachment, ripening process and surface reconstruction is proposed on the grounds of time-dependent experiments. The photocatalytic properties of the polyhedral microcrystals are also investigated.

Abstract:Unusual polyhedral 26-facet Cu7S4 cages wholly exposed with amazingly unique nanotwinned structures as building blocks were successfully synthesized via a facile ethanol-assisted sacrificial Cu2O templates approach. Furthermore, a solvent-controlled fabrication of polyhedral copper sulfides (Cu7S4 and CuS) with different stoichiometries and microstructures can be artificially achieved, which is determined by the intrinsic difference of the surface states of Cu2O templates. Structural and morphological evolutions were investigated by X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) and field-emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM). Stoichiometric-dependent characteristics were demonstrated in the UV-vis absorption investigations. The as-prepared Cu7S4 microcages exhibit higher photocatalytic activity for enhancing degradation of methylene blue, which might be attributed to their special nanotwinned building blocks. This study is of great importance in "bottom-up" assembly of unusual ordering hollow copper sulfides superstructures, but also offers a good opportunity to understand the fundamental significance of nanotwinned structures for their potential applications.

Abstract:By combining Fresnel zone-plate based transmission x-ray microscopy with computed tomography, the nanoscale features in materials with complex shapes can be imaged using synchrotron radiation. The tomographic data sets of a complex copper sulfide crystal were acquired in the angle range +/- 70 degrees at photon energy of 8.0 keV and then were reconstructed by a standard filtered-back-projection algorithm. This experiment shows the quantifiable three-dimensional information of the copper sulfide crystal, which offers a complete understanding of the concaved cuboctahedron structure with 14 faces comprising of six squares and eight triangles. Nanoparticles with Cubic Symmetry: Classification of Polyhedral Shapes

Abstract:The shape of crystalline nanoparticles (NP) can often be described by polyhedra with flat facet surfaces. Thus, structural studies of polyhedral bodies can help to describe geometric details of NPs. Here we consider compact polyhedra of cubic point symmetry <a class="link-external link-http" href="http://Oh.as" rel="external noopener nofollow">this http URL</a> simple models. Their surfaces are described by facets with normal vectors along selected directions (a, b, c) together with their symmetry equivalents forming a direction family {abc}. For given {abc} this yields generic polyhedra with up to 48 facets where we focus on polyhedra with facets of {abc} = {100}, {110}, and {111}, suggested for metal NPs with cubic lattices. The resulting generic polyhedra, cubic, rhombohedral, and octahedral, can serve for the description of non-generic polyhedra as intersections of corresponding generic species. Their structural properties are shown to be fully determined by only three structure parameters, facet distances R100, R110, and R111 of three types of facets. This provides a phase diagram to completely classify the corresponding Oh symmetry polyhedra. Structural properties of all polyhedra, such as shape, size, and facet geometries, are discussed in analytical and numerical detail with visualization of characteristic examples. The results may be used for respective nanoparticle simulations but also as a repository assisting the interpretation of structures of real compact nanoparticles observed by experiment.
