Abstract:Single-crystalline, monodisperse copper sulfide nanocrystals with controlled sizes, shapes. and phases were successfully synthesized via a simple, low-cost, and environmentally friendly chemical reaction of CuCl, and S in oleylamine at 100-180 degrees C. It was found that the molar ratios of [CuCl2]:[S] played the critical role for the control of the sizes, shapes, and phases of copper sulfide nanocrystals. The hexagonal CuS nanodisks, hexagonal CuS nanoribbons consisting of face-to-face stacked nanodisks, and monoclinic Cu1.75S nanoribbons consisting of face-to-face stacked nanodisks were obtained when the molar ratios of [CuCl2]:[S] were 1:1, 2:3, and 2:1, respectively. It was believed that the van der Waals force and dipole-dipole interaction were responsible for the self-assembly of copper sulfide nanodisks. Finally, the copper sulfide nanocrystals were characterized by transmission electron microscopy, high-resolution transmission electron micrscopy, X-ray diffraction, and Fourier transform infrared, and its growth mechanism was primarily discussed.

Abstract:Copper sulfide (CuS) nanocrystals with special morphologies, such as flower- and trepang-like morphology have been successfully synthesized via a simple and convenient solution route at low temperature from shuttle-like CuO crystals. The morphology of the products can be easily controlled by choosing appropriate solvent as the reaction medium. Studies found that the copper source and reaction time also have important influence on the morphology of the final products.

Abstract:A facile, ionic liquid-assisted route was developed to synthesize hierarchical CuS flower-like submicrospheres at 80°C for 24 h. The method was based on a reaction between CuCl2 and thioacetamide (TAA) in aqueous solution with using ionic liquid 1-n-butyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride ([BMIM]Cl) as an assisted agent. The chemical composition, morphology and size of CuS product were characterized by XRD, SEM and TEM. The result shows that the as-prepared CuS consists of flowery spheres with a diameter of 0·6 ∼ 1·0 μm, and these submicrospheres are, in fact, built by numerous nanoflakes with a thickness of 10 ∼ 20 nm. The optical property of CuS product was examined by UV-Vis. In general, we suggested an ecologically and environmentally friendly route for the syntheses of hierarchical metal chalcogenides structures in this paper.

Abstract:We report the synthesis of several unconventional 0-, 1- and 2-dimensional copper sulfide nanostrucutures by the chemical vapor deposition method. The key factor for morphology and structure control of a variety of copper sulfide products is the tuning of deposition and growth temperature to fit for the surface energy barriers and promote different growth directions. At a high growth temperature (480 °C) that provides enough thermal energy, a 0-D octahedral copper sulfide single crystal structure was synthesized. At a slightly lower growth temperature (460 °C), a new 1-D copper sulfide nanorod structure with a nanocrystal head was discovered for the first time. At a much lower growth temperature (150 °C), 2-D copper sulfide nanoflakes with a single crystal hexagonal structure were obtained. These novel structural varieties of copper sulfide can lead to discovering more unconventional material structures and growth mechanisms of other transitional metal chalcogenides, and may allow for new copper sulfide based devices and applications.

Abstract:The crystal phases are essential to the physicochemical properties and functionalities of materials. Copper selenide has emerged as an important and appealing semiconductor, which can exist in a variety of polymorphic phases. However, the richness of polymorphs also makes it a challenge to the direct preparation of copper selenide nanocrystals with tunable phases. Herein, two polymorphs, that is, quasi-tetragonal Cu2-xSe nanocubes and metastable wurtzite Cu2Se nanodisks, are successfully synthesized by using a single precursor, copper(I) selenocyanate (CuSeCN), as the Cu and Se sources. The key to phase modulation is the optimal choice of the ligand in the synthesis. The as-prepared nanocrystals possess different morphologies and compositions, giving rise to distinct optical properties and electrical conductivities. Interestingly, the copper selenide nanocrystals can provide a platform for the rational construction of two types of amorphous hollow AuCuSe nanostructures by reaction with Au(I) precursor, in which their final shapes are well kept as that of the original nanocrystal templates. This work provides an easy strategy for the phase-controlled synthesis of copper selenide nanocrystals and enables the design of new materials for broad applications.

Abstract:Spherical CuS hierarchical structures organized by nanoparticles were synthesized by the reaction of CuCl2 center dot 2H(2)O and sodium O-isopropyldithiocarbonate (xanthate, C3H7OCSSNa) in N,N-dimethylformamide (DMF) at 70 degrees C for 12 h. The product was characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning and transmission electron microscopy (SEM and TEM). The result shows that the hierarchical CuS spheres were of 300-500 nm and aggregated by numerous particles with an average diameter of about 10 nm. A possible mechanism for the formation of CuS hierarchical structures is proposed, and an optical study has also been carried out. (C) 2008 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract:Herein, copper sulfide loaded mesoporous organosilica nanospheres with a triple-shelled hollow structure (CuS/tHMONs) are successfully synthesized. The resulting CuS/tHMONs nanospheres exhibit a uniform diameter of 340 nm, mesoporous channels with a diameter of 3.8 nm, large pore volume, and triply separated cavities. High-angle annular dark-field scanning electron microscopy (HAADF-STEM) images confirm the presence of a high content of CuS nanoparticles within the CuS/tHMONs composite nanospheres. Moreover, the CuS/tHMONs nanospheres demonstrate high photothermal conversion efficiency and excellent photothermal stability. In vitro experiments reveal excellent biocompatibility of the CuS/tHMON nanospheres, and cytotoxic assays demonstrate their effectiveness in killing cancer cells through photothermal therapy.

Abstract:In our former publications (J. Phys. Chem. B 2005, 109, 11585; and J. Phys. Chem. B 2006, 110, 14107), we have proposed the geometrically kinetic competition (GKC) mechanism to be responsible for the silica-vapor-pressure-dependent growth of silica-sheathed Fe7S8 and digenite Cu2S nanocrystals. Here, we demonstrate that geometrical recognition (GR), the basis of GKC, can be a general route to shape-controlled syntheses of a host of materials' nanocrystals. According to the types of the metal (or silicon for CoSi and MnSi) atom sublattices, the experimental results are presented, and the mechanisms for the growth of various shapes of products are discussed in detail. SiO4 clusters have been proposed as the competing opponents to SiO3 clusters for shape-controlled syntheses of MnS, CUCI, Cu2S, CdS, ZnSe, and ZnS nanocrystals.
Nonspherical Half-Shells by Ultrasonic Cleavage of the Hollow Polyhedral Particles in Water

Abstract:We present a facile route to preparing nonspherical half-shells of copper sulfide in which the octahedral mesocages of copper sulfide were grown on the substrate by a two-step electrochemical method first and then were cleaved into tetrahedral half-shells by ultrasonic vibration in water. The obtained half-shells are 1-3 mu m in lengths, and the shell thickness is uniform in similar to 100 nm. It is found that only centrosymmetric octahedral and six-pod shells can be equally split into two similar half-shells, Furthermore, a finite element analysis has been used to model the stress distribution in the octahedral CuS shell structure during ultrasonic vibration.
