Abstract:A facile in situ synthetic method is developed to synthesize metal sulfide nanoparticles based on 2D M-TCPP (M = Cu, Cd, or Co, TCPP = tetrakis(4-carboxyphenyl)porphyrin)) metal-organic framework nanosheets. The obtained CuS/Cu-TCPP composite nanosheet is used as the active material in photoelectrochemical cells, showing notably increased photocurrent due to the improved exciton separation and charge carrier transport.
Phase-Selective Synthesis and Self-Assembly of Monodisperse Copper Sulfide Nanocrystals

Abstract:Single-crystalline, monodisperse copper sulfide nanocrystals with controlled sizes, shapes. and phases were successfully synthesized via a simple, low-cost, and environmentally friendly chemical reaction of CuCl, and S in oleylamine at 100-180 degrees C. It was found that the molar ratios of [CuCl2]:[S] played the critical role for the control of the sizes, shapes, and phases of copper sulfide nanocrystals. The hexagonal CuS nanodisks, hexagonal CuS nanoribbons consisting of face-to-face stacked nanodisks, and monoclinic Cu1.75S nanoribbons consisting of face-to-face stacked nanodisks were obtained when the molar ratios of [CuCl2]:[S] were 1:1, 2:3, and 2:1, respectively. It was believed that the van der Waals force and dipole-dipole interaction were responsible for the self-assembly of copper sulfide nanodisks. Finally, the copper sulfide nanocrystals were characterized by transmission electron microscopy, high-resolution transmission electron micrscopy, X-ray diffraction, and Fourier transform infrared, and its growth mechanism was primarily discussed.

Abstract:Copper sulfide (CuS) nanocrystals with special morphologies, such as flower- and trepang-like morphology have been successfully synthesized via a simple and convenient solution route at low temperature from shuttle-like CuO crystals. The morphology of the products can be easily controlled by choosing appropriate solvent as the reaction medium. Abstract:We report the synthesis of several unconventional 0-, 1- and 2-dimensional copper sulfide nanostrucutures by the chemical vapor deposition method. The key factor for morphology and structure control of a variety of copper sulfide products is the tuning of deposition and growth temperature to fit for the surface energy barriers and promote different growth directions. At a high growth temperature (480 °C) that provides enough thermal energy, a 0-D octahedral copper sulfide single crystal structure was synthesized. At a slightly lower growth temperature (460 °C), a new 1-D copper sulfide nanorod structure with a nanocrystal head was discovered for the first time. At a much lower growth temperature (150 °C), 2-D copper sulfide nanoflakes with a single crystal hexagonal structure were obtained. These novel structural varieties of copper sulfide can lead to discovering more unconventional material structures and growth mechanisms of other transitional metal chalcogenides, and may allow for new copper sulfide based devices and applications.

Abstract:CuInS2 nanocrystals were synthesized by one-pot thermolysis of a mixture solution of metal chlorides, 1-dodecanethiol (DT) and oleic acid in noncoordinating solvent 1-octadecene. Interestingly, in this synthesis, different structures and shapes were obtained by simply varying the dosage of DT. At a low dosage of DT, wurtzite nanoplates formed in the initial reaction stage and then they further grew to nanoplates with wurtzite-zincblende polytypism as the reaction proceeded. On the contrary, a high dosage of DT produced zincblende nanoparticles. The formation processes of nanoplates and nanoparticles were studied and a growth mechanism was proposed. Our research will aid in solution-synthesis of ternary chalcogenide nanocrystals and the development of their optoelectronic devices.
Controllable Synthesis of CuS Nanostructures from Self-Assembled Precursors with Biomolecule Assistance

Abstract:In this work, taking the preparation of CuS nanomaterials as an example, the multiple roles of L-cysteine in the formation of metal sulfide nanostructures were elucidated. First, the precursors captured from the initial reaction solutions were characterized by X-ray diffraction, X- ray photoelectron spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and transmission electron microscopy, which indicated that three typical precursors with different morphologies (dispersive flakes, flake-built spherical aggregations, and solid microspheres) have formed in the three initial reaction solutions with different ratios of L-cysteine to CuCl2, 2H(2)O. Then, the as-formed precursors decomposed as self-sacrificed templates under the hydrothermal condition to produce the interesting CuS nanostructures of highly ordered nanostructures (snowflake-like patterns and flower-like microspheres) and porous hollow microspheres. The mechanisms for the formation of the precursors and their transformation to the final CuS nanostructures have been discussed in detail. The UV-vis diffuse reflectance spectra of the as-obtained CuS nanomaterials with different morphologies have been investigated and discussed. Such work is meaningful in understanding the self-assembly of nanostructures and helpful to prepare novel functional nanomaterials.

Abstract:Metal thiolates have aroused intensive interest mainly due to their precursor-based preparation of nanostructured metal or metal chalcogenides. In this paper, a series of azobenzene-containing thiol ligands with different length alkoxy tails and their corresponding silver thiolates AgS-C10H20-Ph-N=N-Ph-OCnH2n+1 with n = 1, 6, 8, 12, have been successfully synthesized, and their thermal properties and phase behavior have been systematically investigated by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), variable-temperature SAXS/WAXS and temperature dependent FTIR. By introducing azobenzene mesogen for the first time into the silver thiolates, ordered lamellar liquid crystalline mesophases persisting throughout a higher temperature have been achieved derived from their specific orthorhombic crystalline structures, which are in sharp contrast to the micellar or hexagonal columnar mesophases reported for silver alkane thiolates with a longer aliphatic alkyl chain AgSCmH2m+1 (m >= 12) owing to the interplay of azobenzene mesogen pi-pi stacking and the inorganic skeleton binding of a Ag-S slab. Furthermore, the intermediate nanoparticles formation and silver nanodisks preparation through an in situ thermolytic reaction based on such mesogenic precursors have been demonstrated in principle. As a kind of functional metallomesogen precursor the silver mesogenic thiolates with persistent ordered lamellar mesophases provide an ideal two-dimensional (2D) confined environment for the investigation of a layered-precursor-to-lamellar-nanomaterial (LPLM) mechanism of solventless thermolysis and the fascinating controlled preparation of variant 2D shaped metal or metal sulfide nanomaterials.

Abstract:Nanocrystalline CoS2 and NiS2 have been successfully prepared through a solventothermal synthetic route at 130°C. The final products are characterized by X-ray powder diffraction (XRD) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The sulfur-to-metal ratio of the as-prepared products is ca. 1.99–1 and 1.98–1 for CoS2 and NiS2, respectively. TEM shows that with the change of solvents, the morphologies of the as-prepared sulfides can be controlled.

Abstract:Monodisperse Copper nanoparticles with controllable sizes of 0.6 and 1.8nm were synthesized via modifying Brust-Schiffrin two-phase method. This route involves a slow reduction of [TOA]2[CuBr4] precursor in toluene, with particles sizes rationally controlled by the S/Cu ratio. Size-dependent inter-atomic distance contraction in the thiol-capped copper nanoparticles was investigated by Extended X-ray Absorption Fine Structure (EXAFS). The analysis revealed a shortened Cu-Cu inter-atomic distance, indicating strong surface interaction, in accord with the larger effect expected for ultrasmall particals (<2nm).

Abstract:Monodisperse Cu2ZnSnS4 (CZTS) nanocrystals with tunable shape, crystalline phase, and composition are synthesized by efficient thermolysis of a single source precursor of mixed metal-oleate complexes in hot organic solvents with dissolved sulfur sources. Suitable tuning of the synthetic conditions and the Cu/(Zn + Sn) ratio of the precursor has enabled precise control of the crystalline phase in the form of kesterite, or a newly observed wurtzite structure. Nanocrystals with morphology in the form of spherical, rice-like, or rod-like shapes are obtained over a wide range of compositions (0.5 <= Cu/(Zn + Sn) <= 1.2). Both the final products and intermediates for each shape exhibit consistent composition and structure, indicating homogenous nucleation and growth of single-phase nanocrystals. Thin films prepared from colloidal nanocrystal suspensions display interesting shape-dependent photoresponse behavior under white light illumination from a solar simulator.

Abstract:Rod-like nanocrystalline tin sulfides with different compositions and phases were obtained via simple ethanol thermal reactions between tin chlorides and thioacetamide at relatively low temperature (100°C for 10 h). It is found that solvents, reaction temperatures, and trace water in the system were important factors in obtaining one-dimensional nanocrystalline tin sulfides. The reaction mechanism has also been investigated.

Abstract:Atomically precise copper nanoclusters (Cu NCs) have attracted tremendous attention for their huge potential in many applications. However, the uncertainty of the growth mechanism and complexity of the crystallization process hinder the in-depth understanding of their properties. In particular, the ligand effect has been rarely explored at the atomic/molecular level due to the lack of feasible models. Herein, three isostructural Cu-6 NCs ligated with diverse mono-thiol ligands (2-mercaptobenzimidazole, 2-mercaptobenzothiazole, and 2-mercaptobenzoxazole, respectively) are successfully synthesized, which provide an ideal platform to unambiguously address the intrinsic role of ligands. The overall atom-by-atom structural evolution process of Cu-6 NCs is mapped out with delicate mass spectrometry (MS) for the first time. It is intriguingly found that the ligands, albeit only atomic difference (NH, O, and S), can profoundly affect the building-up processes, chemical properties, atomic structures, as well as catalytic activities of Cu NCs. Furthermore, ion-molecule reactions combined with density functional theory (DFT) calculations demonstrate that the defective sites formed on ligand can significantly contribute to the activation of molecular oxygen. This study provides fundamental insights into the ligand effect, which is vital for the delicate design of high-efficient Cu NCs-based catalysts.

Abstract:Inorganic nanocrystals have attracted widespread attention both for their size-dependent properties and for their potential use as building blocks in an array of applications. A complete understanding of chemical transformations in nanocrystals is important for controlling structure, composition, and electronic properties. Here, we utilize in situ high-resolution transmission electron microscopy to study structural and morphological transformations in individual sulfide nanocrystals (copper sulfide, iron sulfide, and cobalt sulfide) as they react with lithium. The experiments reveal the influence of structure and composition on the transformation pathway (conversion versus displacement reactions), and they provide a high-resolution view of the unique displacement reaction mechanism in copper sulfide in which copper metal is extruded from the crystal. The structural similarity between the initial and final phases, as well as the mobility of ions within the crystal, are seen to exert a controlling influence on the reaction pathway.

Abstract:Bis(N-hexyl-N-(4-methylbenzyl)dithiocarbamato-S,S')copper(II) ( 1 ) and bis(N-dodecyl-N-(4-methylbenzyl)dithiocarbamato-S,S')copper(II) ( 2 ) have been synthesized and characterized using elemental analysis, FTIR and electronic spectroscopy and single crystal X-ray diffraction technique (SCXRD). X-ray structure analysis of both complexes reveals that the copper(II) has a distorted square planar geometry. The intermolecular interactions in crystal packing are quantified using Hirshfeld surface analysis. Density functional theory (DFT) studies were also performed to validate the experimental SCXRD results. Solvothermal decomposition method has been employed to prepare copper sulfides from complexes 1 and 2 . The obtained copper sulfide samples were characterized by powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM) and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy. The PXRD patterns of the copper sulfide nanoparticles prepared from 1 and 2 indexed to the orthorhombic phase with estimated crystallite size of 30 nm and 24 nm, respectively. Photocatalytic activity of copper sulfide was evaluated using congo red under UV irradiation. Both copper sulfide nanoparticles are efficient photocatalyst for degradation of congo red dye.

Abstract:Intercalation of exotic atoms or molecules into the layered materials remains an extensively investigated subject in current physics and chemistry. However, traditionally melt-growth and chemical interaction strategies are either limited by insufficiency of intercalant concentrations or destitute of accurate controllability. Here, we have developed a general electrochemical intercalation method to efficaciously regulate the concentration of zerovalent copper atoms into layered Bi2Se3, followed by comprehensive experimental characterization and analyses. Up to 57% copper atoms (Cu6.7Bi2Se3) can be intercalated with no disruption to the host lattice. Meanwhile the unconventional resistance dip accompanied by a hysteresis loop below 40 K, as well as the emergence of new Raman peak in CuxBi2Se3, is a distinct manifestation of the interplay between intercalated Cu atoms with Bi2Se3 host. Our work demonstrates a new methodology to study fundamentally new and unexpected physical behaviors in intercalated metastable materials.

Abstract:A novel solvothermal method has been successfully developed to prepare nanocrystalline CuSbS2 and Ag3SbS3 by the reactions between CuI and AgNO3 with SbCl3 and elemental sulfur in ethylenediamine at 140°C for 12 h, respectively. XRD, TEM and XPS examinations investigated the phase, grain size, morphology and purity of the products, respectively. Ethylenediamine played important roles in the formation of the ternary sulfides. A possible mechanism is proposed and expected to explain similar reactions.
Morphology-controlled Electrochemical Sensing Properties of CuS Crystals for Tartrazine and Sunset Yellow

Abstract:In this work, we demonstrate the morphology-controllable syntheses of CuS crystals by a facile hydrothermal/solvothermal method through merely changing the reaction solvents without employing any surfactants, templates or structure-directing agents. The dependence of electrochemical sensing properties for tartrazine (TT) and sunset yellow (SY) on the morphologies of CuS crystals (microspheres, hexagonal microsheets, sandwich-like plates, interlaced nanosheets and nanoflowers) was studied by voltammetric techniques. Among these CuS structures, the CuS nanoflowers constructed by textile-like nanosheets with a three-dimensional (3D) hierarchical porous structure hold the largest Brunauer-Emmett-Teller specific surface area (37.12 m(2) g(-1)) and display the highest electrocatalytic activities to the TT and SY oxidations. Consequently, the CuS nanoflowers modified electrode exhibits outstanding electrochemical sensing performances, i.e. high sensitivities of 1.7331 and 0.2260 A M-1 for TT, and 0.4228 and 0.01564 A M-1 for SY, low detection limits of 0.012 mu M for TT and 0.006 mu M for SY, and satisfactory recoveries of 97.0-104.5% for TT and 99.0-105.0% for SY. Simultaneously, it also features excellent anti-interference, stability and reproducibility. The superior sensing performance of CuS nanoflowers may benefit from its unique 3D hierarchical porous architecture, which can facilitate the electrolyte infiltration and promote the active material utilization efficiency. Based on these findings, we can draw a reasonable conclusion that CuS with a flower-like structure is promising electrocatalysts for efficiently sensing TT and SY.
Temperature-Dependent Selection of Reaction Pathways, Reactive Species, and Products during Postsynthetic Selenization of Copper Sulfide Nanoparticles

Abstract:Rational design of elaborate, multicomponent nanomaterials is important for the development of many technologies such as optoelectronic devices, photocatalysts, and ion batteries. Combination of metal chalcogenides with different anions, such as in CdS/CdSe structures, is particularly effective for creating heterojunctions with valence band offsets. Seeded growth, often coupled with cation exchange, is commonly used to create various core/shell, dot-in-rod, or multipod geometries. To augment this library of multichalcogenide structures with new geometries, we have developed a method for postsynthetic transformation of copper sulfide nanorods into several different classes of nanoheterostructures containing both copper sulfide and copper selenide. Two distinct temperature-dependent pathways allow us to select from several outcomes-rectangular, faceted Cu2-xS/Cu2-xSe core/shell structures, nanorhombuses with a Cu2-xS core, and triangular deposits of Cu2-xSe or Cu2-x(S,Se) solid solutions. These different outcomes arise due to the evolution of the molecular components in solution. At lower temperatures, slow Cu2-xS dissolution leads to concerted morphology change and Cu2-xSe deposition, while Se-anion exchange dominates at higher temperatures. We present detailed characterization of these Cu2-xS-Cu2-xSe nanoheterostructures by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), powder X-ray diffraction, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, and scanning TEM-energy-dispersive spectroscopy. Furthermore, we correlate the selenium species present in solution with the roles they play in the temperature dependence of nanoheterostructure formation by comparing the outcomes of the established reaction conditions to use of didecyl diselenide as a transformation precursor.
Molecular Precursor Approach to Sulfur-Free CuInSe 2 : Replacing Thiol Coordination in Soluble Metal Complexes
