Abstract:Seismic behavior analysis of bolt-endplate connected concrete filled tube column (CFT) and steel beam composite frames with buckling restrained braces (BRBs) is being conducted. The objective is to investigate the seismic performance of this type of frame and to evaluate existing design criteria. Based on China-related design standards and displacement-based design procedures, a 10-story prototype building was designed with buckling restrained braced frames (BRBFs) as the lateral load resisting system. The columns are CFT members and the beams are structural steel sections. Nonlinear time history analyses of a planar BRBF extracted from the prototype building were conducted with the software SAP2000. Earthquake records were scaled to three different seismic input levels: frequent occurrence earthquake (FOE), design basis earthquake (DBE), and maximum considered earthquake (MCE). The BRBF shows acceptable behavior at different seismic excitation levels. A BRBF pseudo dynamic experimental investigation with substructure technique is planned. This paper presents the results of the analytical study and briefly summarizes the upcoming experimental program.

Abstract:This paper proposes a direct-displacement based design (DDBD) procedure, to make base-isolated building structure with lead-rubber bearing (LRBs) satisfy the performance objectives prescribed by displacement thresholds. To this end, the DDBD for regular building structures is incorporated with the two-degree-of-freedom (2DOF) model of base-isolated building structures. Fundamentals of the standard DDBD procedure is briefed at first. The equivalent linearized 2DOF model of a base-isolated building structure is then detailed. Modal analysis and response spectrum analysis of this 2DOF model has been carried out, which suggests a simplistic and readily-invertible closed-form relationship from structural characteristics to seismic displacements. Given the displacement requirements, the relationship facilitates the solution of the structural parameters of the base-isolated building structure. Following the basic steps of DDBD but utilizing this 2DOF model as the substitute for the original nonlinear structural model, an alternative DDBD procedure is then developed and detailed. This DDBD procedure is verified by numerical examples, in which the nonlinear time-history analysis of the designed structures yields seismic displacement results matching the preset target thresholds well. The design solutions of the proposed procedure are also compared with those given by an existing one. Numerical results indicate that the proposed DDBD procedure is reliable, straightforward, and convenient for the seismic design of base-isolated building structures with LRBs.

Abstract:The short column effect is a major contributor to structural failure during seismic events. However, while most investigations concentrate on its influence on external walls, it also causes damage to interior walls. This underscores the significance of exploring interior wall damage due to this effect. This study involves four variations of RC frames with infill walls, analyzed using the Pushover method within the SAP 2000 software. The Pushover analysis vividly portrays the behavior and performance of interior wall systems. A comprehensive comparison of metrics like base shear, column shear force, and plastic hinge behavior underscores the pivotal role of interior walls in the entire structure, accentuating the necessity of delving into interior wall research.

Abstract:A fused steel diagrid frame (FSDF) is an innovative earthquake resilient structural system. FSDF combines the steel diagrid structural system with shear links (SLs) and moment connections (MCs) to dissipate earthquake energy. SLs are placed between diamond-shaped grid units and serve as the primary seismic force-resisting system (SFRS). MCs provide the additional resistance as the secondary SFRS. To facilitate the design of the proposed FSDF system, a performance-based equivalent energy design procedure (EEDP) is utilized to design a prototype building. EEDP allows designers to select multiple performance objectives under different earthquake hazard intensities. A detailed finite element model is developed to simulate the nonlinear dynamic response of the structure under earthquake shaking intensities. The results of nonlinear dynamic analyses show that the FSDF has superior seismic performance and can be efficiently designed using EEDP. Lastly, detailed collapse risk assessment of the prototype building utilizing the FSDF is conducted using the Federal Emergency Management Agency FEMA P695 (2009) methodology. The result shows that the EEDP-designed FSDF has superior margin against collapse.

Abstract:Recycled aggregate concrete‐filled square steel tube (S‐RACFST) frame has the characteristics of high bearing capacity, good ductility, and superior seismic performance. To propose a displacement‐based seismic design of S‐RACFST frame, the validity of the design method was verified by a detailed calculation example. Based on the performance requirements, this design method divided the structural performance into five levels: normal use, temporary use, use after strengthening, life safety, and collapse prevention, and suggested specific steps for the displacement‐based seismic design of S‐RACFST frame using the inter‐story displacement angle limit value as the quantitative indicator. The 10‐story S‐RACFST frame was used as an analytical example for static elastic–plastic analysis. The pushover lateral displacement curves of the frame structure at each performance level were obtained and compared with the displacement‐based seismic design curves. The results show that the displacement‐based seismic design method of S‐RACFST frame structures can fulfill the performance level requirements such as "temporary use," "normal use," and "collapse prevention," and the displacement‐based seismic design method is one of the effective ways to realize the performance design of S‐RACFST frame structures.

Abstract:A cross-laminated timber (CLT) wall is a composite structural assembly with high strength and stiffness properties. In this study, the beneficial properties of this wall were used in designing a new CLT-reinforced concrete (RC) hybrid system building. The hybrid system consisted of an RC moment-resisting frame with CLT infill. The energy dissipation capacity of this system was further enhanced by using steel slit dampers as connectors between the CLT and RC beam. To facilitate the adoption of new technology in earthquake engineering applications, direct displacement-based design was used. The utility of the proposed system was illustrated on a six-story CLT-RC frame dual system. Performance of the proposed design method was shown by conducting nonlinear time history analyses with consideration of seismicity of Vancouver, Canada. The results indicated that the proposed CLT-RC hybrid system is capable of withstanding lateral forces due to intense seismic excitations.

Abstract:Multi-story reinforced concrete (RC) frames are one of the most widely-used structural systems in engineering practice. To prevent the progressive collapse of RC frames under disastrous events, it is desirable to systematically investigate the progressive collapse fragility of the structures under column loss scenarios. This study proposed a simplified procedure for quantifying the progressive collapse fragility of multi-story RC frames, taking into consideration the influences of dynamic effects and parameter uncertainties. Nine typical RC frames were designed according to the Chinese building codes and investigated by the proposed method. The effects of seismic design intensity and the number of stories on the progressive collapse fragility of the RC frames were investigated. The results indicate that the progressive collapse resistance of multi-story RC frames depends on the combining effects of the structural loads and the bearing capacity of the beams. The structural resistance generally improves when increasing the number of stories. In contrast, it improves with the increase of seismic design intensity only when the seismic load is involved in the controlled load combination. For the RC frames that have various componential dimensions along the height, the stories with a changed componential dimension tend to collapse more likely under column removal scenarios. The outcomes of this study can provide references for quanti-fying the progressive collapse resistance and recommending appropriate load increase factors for the engineering design of multi-story RC frames in China.

Abstract:Multi-cellular concrete-filled steel tubular (CFST) columns have been widely used in frame structures for seismic resisting purposes. In this paper, the seismic performance of single-story composite frame structures, consisting of T-shaped multi-cellular CFST (TM-CFST) columns connected with steel beams, was investigated. Four specimens of the composite frame structures under constant vertical compressive loads and quasi-static lateral cyclic loads were tested to explore the hysteretic performance. Refined finite element (FE) models were developed to provide a benchmark modeling approach that was able to accurately capture the mechanical behavior of the composite frame structures. The FE analysis results were compared with those measured from tests, showing satisfactory coincidence between the experimental and simulated results. Hence, the validity of the setup in the FE model was verified. Following the validation of the FE modeling approach, a parametric study was conducted, involving the parameters of axial force ratio, beam-to-column linear stiffness ratio, cross-sectional dimensions of columns and width of frame. On this basis, the seismic performance of the composite frames was investigated by analyzing the characteristics including stiffness, strength, ductility, and energy-dissipating abilities. The TMCFST frames are applicable for low- and medium-rise building structures. In practical designs of the TM-CFST frames, the beam-to-column stiffness ratios should be carefully selected to guarantee that the beam reaches full-sectional plasticity before the column at the beam-column joint, fulfilling the requirement of seismic resistant designs.

Abstract:The study delves into direct displacement-based design (DDBD), an approach rooted in performance-based design, operating within predetermined response limits. The approach's positive influence on diverse structural typologies is evident, emphasising the soil beneath reinforced concrete (RC) frame structures, particularly those designed using DDBD. The present research scrutinises the performance of a 15-storey RC frame building, considering the intricate interplay of soil-structure interaction (SSI). Employing a fiber modelling approach for frame elements and adopting a pile-raft foundation model, incorporating soil stiffness and nonlinearity through soil springs, the RC frame is meticulously designed to meet rigorous life safety performance criteria under DDBD principles. Various ground motions of varying intensities are applied to the RC frame to conduct incremental dynamic analysis (IDA), offering a comprehensive assessment of nonlinear structural behaviour in terms of displacements and inter-storey drift ratios. Ground motions are judiciously selected and scaled following the comprehensive calculative procedure outlined in FEMA P695 (Quantification of building seismic performance factors, FEMA P695. Prepared by Applied Technology Council For the Federal Emergency Management Agency, Washington, 2009). The resulting responses are leveraged to predict collapse probabilities, employing diverse approaches in the construction of seismic fragility curves. The research significantly contributes to the advancement of seismic design methodologies, ensuring structures adhere to robust resilience standards against seismic hazards. The RC frame design incorporating SSI demonstrates an 11.25% reduction in the inter-storey drift ratio and a lower probability of collapse at higher intensities compared to a fixed-based RC frame, indicating improved structural flexibility.

Abstract:Direct displacement-based seismic design (DDBD) is widely popular due to the effectiveness of the design approach for achieving the structure’s predefined displacement limits. The seismic vulnerability assessment is computed on DDBD-designed structures to anticipate the future state of the structure, which has the potential to enhance the current design. In the present study, 4, 8, and 15-storey reinforced concrete (RC) frame structures are designed using DDBD and force-based design (FBD) under soft, medium, and hard soil conditions. A displacement profile is generated considering life safety (LS) and collapse prevention (CP) performance limits identified as per FEMA 356 (2000). The design response spectra to calculate base shear are taken from the revised IS 1893 Part-1 (2016) at zone-V. The nonlinear multi-mode pushover analysis is performed to investigate RC frame buildings and evaluate RC frames’ nonlinear behavior in terms of drift profiles and seismic vulnerability by generating fragility curves. The R factor determined by nonlinear static analysis varies between buildings based on their height, soil conditions, and performance status but is observed to be more than the code-specified number. The estimated level of damage to RC frame structures built on soft soil sites is moderate or between 1.5 and 2.5. Nonetheless, the likelihood of collapse for all studied frames is less than the threshold collapse of 10%.

Displacement-based deformation capacity design method of RC columns

Abstract:To perform displacement-based seismic design of reinforced concrete (RC) frames, a model has been developed to predict the drift ratio of RC column at yield and at ultimate respectively. A set of test data was used for regression analysis of the model, and expressions for the drift ratio of RC column were evaluated. The yield drift ratio of RC column is related to the yield strength of longitudinal bars, depth of column cross section and axial force ratio. The ultimate drift ratio of RC column is related to the axial force ratio, stirrup characteristic value and shear span-to-depth ratio, and has little to do with the longitudinal reinforcement ratio. Based on the expression of ultimate drift ratio of RC column, displacement-based deformation capacity design method of RC columns was proposed. © 2006 by School of Engineering and Technology, Asian Institute of Technology.

Abstract:Collapse safety is the most important objective of performance-based aseismic design. Buildings should have an enough safety margin to avoid collapse subjected to a severe or mega earthquake. However, current Chinese seismic design code for building structures does not provide an explicit design or a quantitative evaluation method for collapse-resistant capacity. In this paper, the collapse-resistant capacities and safety margins against collapse of multi-story reinforced concrete (RC) frames with different seismic fortification levels are quantitatively evaluated, with a collapse fragility analysis based on an incremental dynamic analysis (IDA). The influences of the axial compression ratio and the failure mode to the collapse-resistant capacity are discussed, and suggestions are proposed to improve the current design.
Experimental study on seismic performance of RC frames reinforced with high-strength steel

Abstract:One of the important objectives of anti-seismic design is to ensure sufficient anti-collapse capability in severe earthquakes, and to reduce residual deformation in moderate earthquakes so that the damage can be easily repaired. Because ordinary reinforced concrete frames are reinforced with low strength rebars, collapse mechanism maybe easily formed in severe earthquakes, and even if the frame survived, its residual displacements would be very large. According to the method of reducing seismic residual deformation of the structure reinforced with high-strength steel, two sets of two-span and three-story frames were studied with low-cyclic reversed horizontal load to compare the anti-seismic performance of the frames. The experimental results show that the residual displacement of the frame reinforced with high strength strands was very small with a low level of damage, which would reduce the difficulty and cost of rehabilitation. In addition, because of delayed yielding in the reinforcement in the columns of the bottom story, the collapse probability of frame reinforced with high strength strands is greatly reduced.

Abstract:To promote the seismic resilience of structures, minimizing both seismic damage and repair time is an effective way. Toward this goal, this paper proposes a novel resilient steel frame (RSF). The kernel structural components are the self-centering (SC) rocking columns and the replaceable energy-dissipating (ED) connections. The SC rocking columns equipped with shape memory alloy slip friction dampers (SMASFDs) reduce residual deformation and plastic damage of column bases, whereas the ED connections using shaped fuse steel plates mainly dissipate the input seismic energy . To demonstrate the seismic response characteristics, the numerical model of a three-story RSF is developed in OpenSees. The model is firstly validated by experimental results and then its seismic performance evaluations are carried out using three suites of earthquake ground motions associated with three seismic hazard levels. An equivalent conventional steel frame (CSF) with ED connections and rigid column bases is introduced as the counterpart. Incremental dynamic analysis (IDA) is conducted to obtain samples of the demand. Based on the IDA data, the joint fragility curves are generated using the joint probability density functions , taking into account the coupling relationship between the maximum and residual drift. The analysis results show that the RSF exhibits comparable maximum interstory drift and lower residual interstory drift, compared with the CSF. The introduction of the SC rocking column effectively protects the column from yielding and mitigates the residual deformation of the replaceable ED connections, therefore improving the reparability and seismic resilience of the structural system.

Influence of Structural Parameters to the Seismic Collapse Resistance of RC Frames in 7-degree Seismic Fortification Zone

Abstract:Currently in China structural seismic design mostly focuses on design and verification of member strength under minor earthquake. However, during actual earthquakes, structural systems play a more important role in seismic collapse resistance. Therefore, in order to find the influence of structural parameters to the seismic collapse resistance, this paper designs 24 reinforced concrete (RC) frames in 7-degree seismic fortification zone according to the Chinese Seismic Design Code, which have different spans, storey heights and storey numbers. Incremental dynamic analysis (IDA), recommended by ATC-63 Report, is implemented for the frames based on fiber-beam element model to evaluate their seismic collapse resistances. The result shows that structural parameters have a great influence to seismic collapse resistance. The seismic collapse resistance of frames designed according to the Chinese Seismic Design Code with different span has obvious difference. The result could be referred for the further study of seismic collapse resistance.

Abstract:Earthquake-induced building collapse and progressive collapse due to accidental local failure of vertical components are the two most common failure modes of reinforced concrete (RC) frame structures. Conventional design methods usually focus on the design requirements of a specific hazard but neglect the interactions between different designs. For example, the progressive collapse design of an RC frame often yields increased reinforcement and flexural strength of the beams. As a result, the seismic design principle of "strong-column-weak-beam" may be violated, which may lead to unfavorable failure modes and weaken the seismic performance. To avoid these adverse effects of the progressive collapse design on the seismic resistance of RC frames, a novel structural detailing is proposed in this study. The proposed detailing technique intends to concurrently improve the seismic and progressive collapse performances of an RC frame by changing the layout of the newly added longitudinal reinforcement against progressive collapse without introducing any additional reinforcement. A six-story RC frame is used as the prototype building for this investigation. Both cyclic and progressive collapse tests are conducted to validate the performance of the proposed structural detailing. Based on the experimental results, detailed finite element (FE) models of the RC frame with different reinforcement layouts are established. The seismic and progressive collapse resistances of different models are compared based on the incremental dynamic analysis (IDA) and nonlinear dynamic alternate path (AP) methods, respectively. The results indicate that the proposed structural detailing can effectively resolve the conflict between the seismic and progressive collapse designs.

Abstract:A displacement-based earthquake loss assessment (DBELA) methodology for RC frames is proposed when the influence of masonry infill panels is taken into account. The yield displacement, period-height relationship and hysteretic characteristic of the fully-infilled RC frames are discussed in detail. The equations of DBELA for fully-infilled RC frames are established to obtain the capacity and demand curves for the seismic loss assessment. Nonlinear dynamic time-history analyses are carried out to investigate the validity of the proposed DBELA methodology. Numerical comparisons indicate that the proposed methodology can provide precise vulnerability assessment of fully-infilled RC frames in both the yield limit state and the post-yield limit states. © 2012 Elsevier Ltd.

Abstract:In order to provide seismic resistant design basis for the irregular reinforced concrete frame of the Beijing Goldfield Center, experimental study and elastic calculation of the frame model were performed. The test revealed the failure mode of the frame model without taking the post pouring concrete measures which is used for decreasing the moments in the main beam caused by gravity loads. The test results showed that the maximum story shear carried by the model is more than 3.6 times the elastic story shear corresponding to the moderate earthquake of 8 degree of seismic fortification intensity. The maximum story drift ratio is larger than 1/50. The lateral force-displacement hysteresis loops are stable and do not have any obvious pinch phenomenon. Based on the test and calculation results, the recommendations for seismic resistant design philosophy, i.e. strong main column-weak main/secondary beam, strong secondary column-weak secondary beam, strong main beam-weak secondary column, performing elastoplastic analysis and increasing the load-carrying capacity of the main frame columns are proposed for the seismic resistant design of the irregular frame.

Abstract:The dynamic characteristics and earthquake resistant abilities of the RC frame-shear wall structure with special-shaped columns in a mid-highrise residential building are studied in this paper by elastic computation and dynamic elastic-plastic time history analysis subjected to earthquakes of different levels.The results show that the lateral force resisting rigidity of the structure is big,and the earthquake resistant ability is good.After the inelastic phase,the distributing of plastic hinges is proper and reasonable,and the requirement of ductility design of structure is satisfied.
