Abstract:We present an intuitive method that seamlessly integrates the whole process of garment design including 3D modeling, pattern development, garment simulation, and grading. Firstly, a sketch-based modeling method is proposed to design a 3D garment using editable control curves. Secondly, 2D patterns are developed by flattening 3D surface patches, then a 3D fine garment is formed directly based on the information of sewing relations and correspondence between 3D surfaces and 2D patterns. Lastly, garment templates are introduced to realize automatic design-preserving transfer of garments between human bodies with different sizes and shapes. The method is able to design 3D garments and 2D patterns efficiently and accurately. Our study provides an easy-to-learn and easy-to-use tool for both fashion designers and computer artists.

Abstract:This paper analyzes the structure and the movement of young women's neck firstly. Then the composing principle of young women neckline was discussed. On this basis, take research on the collar modeling of young women garments. The design essentials of collarless collar, stand-collar, flat collar and turn-down collar modeling were discussed. Distinctive collars could be designed through the changes of neckline, collar width, fold line, collar angle and outside edge of collar. At last, the influencing factors of collar modeling of young women garments were proposed from the principle of clothing aesthetics, such as the feature of neck, the feature of face, the feature of shoulder, the shape of garment, fabric, fashion trend, etc. Only through the combination of collar design with influencing factors, collar modeling suited to young women could be designed.

Abstract:A pattern design system is proposed, to encourage average persons to design patterns on their apparel by themselves. The system firstly acquires video images, then constructs tiling, finally maps the tiling to some certain shape of apparel and displays it. This process is configured by users through GUI. The system allows generating patterns from everyday objects by simply shooting the objects. The interaction with the system was praised to be interesting. The generated patterns were multifarious and funny. The system also achieved WYSWYG-what you see is what you get. © 2010 IEEE.

Abstract:We address the problem of modifying a given well-designed 2-D sewing pattern to accommodate garment edits in the 3-D space. Existing methods usually adjust the sewing pattern by applying uniform flattening to the 3-D garment. The problems are twofold: first, it ignores local scaling of the 2-D sewing pattern such as shrinking ribs of cuffs; second, it does not respect the implicit design rules and conventions of the industry, such as the use of straight edges for simplicity and precision in sewing. To address those problems, we present a pattern adjustment method that considers the nonuniform local scaling of the 2-D sewing pattern by utilizing the intrinsic scale matrix. In addition, we preserve the original boundary shape by an as-original-as-possible geometric constraint when desirable. We build a prototype with a set of commonly used alteration operations and showcase the capability of our method via a number of alteration examples throughout the article.

Abstract:To support the agile design for apparel customization,the tabular layouts of article characteristics(SML) was introduced into the apparel pattern modeling.Firstly,the method of pattern parameter analysis was illuminated,and the relationships between the control points of geometry model and the parameters were studied.Then the reuse pattern geometry model was established,and the extraction rules of the article characteristics was also discussed.To describe the pattern modeling and the reuse process,the logic framework of the apparel pattern modeling based on SML was constructed,and associations among the customs' individualized information,resource database and the matching rules were formally described.Supported by this logic framework,knowledge reuse and the pattern variant design were realized.Finally,an instance of the apparel pattern modeling and variant design for suit was given.

Customer Oriented Interactive 3D Parametric Design of Collar Styles

Abstract:Since the 2D CAD of collars is not intuitive enough, it is difficult for customers to participate in the design process of collar styles. This paper proposed a novel method that supports customers to design collar styles intuitively and conveniently. A multi-level model is established for parametric representation of 3D collars. Geometric models of typical collars such as stand collars, flat collars, shirt collars, tailor collars are given and then the collar surfaces are automatically constructed. Collar surfaces are also modeled by dragging the contour curves. Constraints expressions and solving methods are introduced to make the editing process friendly. By encoding/decoding the contour curves, collar style models can be saved and reused, and thus, design results can be shared among customers. A mass-spring model-based method is adopted to flatten 3D collar surfaces to 2D patterns, and then customers can decorate the collar appearance by texture mapping. Finally, some design examples of collar styles are given which show that our methods are suit for convenient interaction with customers, and easy to express their individual ideas and requirements.

Abstract:After the main problems in the Mass Production of Custom-tailor Apparel (MPoCtA) are analyzed, the architecture of the integrated information system based on network for the mass production is put forward, and main business processes related to the integration and its shared data and information are discussed. Then rule-based knowledge base techniques in MPoCtA and its practice in the automatic transformation of apparel pattern are elaborated. Finally, a system of custom-tailor apparel in one company is introduced, which integrates the design, production and distribution. The accuracy of transformation of apparel pattern in this system reached 90%.

Abstract:Abstract With the change of personalized ideas, the clothing and apparel industry is developing towards small batches and multiple varieties. Looking for fast and efficient apparel image processing and recognition is the most urgent problem to be solved by apparel companies. The establishment of a collar style sample library is the prerequisite for apparel image processing and recognition research. Apparel image preprocessing is the basis of research. This article takes the clothing style map as the research object, establishes a collar style sample library, and takes a round neck T-shirt image as an example, which contains 8 types of collars commonly used in clothing, and each collar type corresponds to 60 images. The advantages and disadvantages of commonly used image graying, sharpening, edge detection, morphological processing, and image segmentation processing methods are compared and analyzed. Corresponding image preprocessing schemes have been formulated to provide new ideas for automatic pattern recognition, software development and application.

It delves into the integration of smocking with modern fashion design, highlighting its significance in enhancing fabric texture, silhouette, and overall aesthetic appeal. Through comprehensive analyses of case studies and craft types, the paper reveals how local brands creatively adapt smocking, merging traditional craftsmanship with contemporary design principles. The findings suggest that smocking technology not only enriches the textile design repertoire but also contributes to the global identity and innovation of local Chinese clothing brands, bridging heritage crafts with modern design innovations.

Abstract:The purpose: explain the concept of totem in traditional Chinese patterns, and introduce representative totem elements and their implication. Analyze the traditional Chinese patterns that appear in modern clothing design. Methodology. A systematic approach was used in this research to project contemporary modern clothing design: history-analytical, literary-analytical, morphological, and comparative analysis of the creative primary source, associative means of its adaptation to the actual fashion trends. The methodology of the research is based on the systematic analysis of the design projects using elements of traditional patterns in China. Results. Studies have shown that not all widely used traditional Chinese patterns are totems, and totems are patterns with more symbolic meaning. Several representative traditional Chinese patterns are displayed. The cultural connotation of Chinese style patterns widely used in modern clothing design is revealed, and the innovative methods of patterns are also considered. The scientific novelty of this research lies in its compilation of prior studies, which help differentiate between traditional Chinese patterns and totems. Additionally, the study introduces the concepts of totem worship, reproductive worship, and soul worship that are embedded within these patterns. Practical recommendations for integrating traditional Chinese patterns into modern clothing design are also provided. Practical significance. of this study lies in its potential application to the practice of incorporating Chinese traditional patterns into contemporary clothing design. By understanding the cultural heritage and totemic elements within these patterns, designers can create innovative and culturally rich fashion pieces that pay homage to China's rich artistic history.
Design2GarmentCode: Turning Design Concepts to Tangible Garments Through Program Synthesis

Abstract:Sewing patterns, the essential blueprints for fabric cutting and tailoring, act as a crucial bridge between design concepts and producible garments. However, existing uni-modal sewing pattern generation models struggle to effectively encode complex design concepts with a multi-modal nature and correlate them with vectorized sewing patterns that possess precise geometric structures and intricate sewing relations. In this work, we propose a novel sewing pattern generation approach Design2GarmentCode based on Large Multimodal Models (LMMs), to generate parametric pattern-making programs from multi-modal design concepts. LMM offers an intuitive interface for interpreting diverse design inputs, while pattern-making programs could serve as well-structured and semantically meaningful representations of sewing patterns, and act as a robust bridge connecting the cross-domain pattern-making knowledge embedded in LMMs with vectorized sewing patterns. Experimental results demonstrate that our method can flexibly handle various complex design expressions such as images, textual descriptions, designer sketches, or their combinations, and convert them into size-precise sewing patterns with correct stitches. Compared to previous methods, our approach significantly enhances training efficiency, generation quality, and authoring flexibility. Our code and data will be publicly available.

Kinematic Analysis for the Thread Taking-up Mechanism of Sewing Machine and the Optimum Synthesis

Abstract:Kinematic analysis was performed on the thread takingup mechanism of a sewing machine, and the mistakes existing in former analysis were modified correspondingly. The effects of structure parameters for the thread takingup mechanism on takeup angle were revealed. Synthesis properties of an ideal thread takingup path were presented. A genetic algorithm was used for the optimum synthesis of the thread takingup mechanism of sewing machine, and the minimum value of takeup angle is the optimal object function. The result which was verified is extremely satisfactory. 

Abstract:Automated machinery design for garment manufacturing is essential for improving productivity, consistency, and quality. This paper focuses on the development of new pulling gear for automated pant bottom hem sewing machines. Traditionally, these machines require manual intervention to guide the bottom hem sewing process, which often leads to inconsistent stitch quality and alignment. While twin-needle sewing machines can create twin lines for the bottom hem, they typically lack sufficient pulling force to adequately handle the fabric of the pants' bottom hem. The innovative design of the pulling gear aims to address this issue by providing the necessary pulling force for the bottom hem of eyelet pants. The research and design discussed in this article seek to solve technical challenges, eliminate the need for skilled manual operators, and enhance overall productivity. This improvement ensures smooth and precise feeding of fabric pieces in the automated twin needle sewing machine, ultimately improving the consistency and quality of the stitching. By integrating this innovation, garment manufacturers can boost productivity, reduce reliance on manual skilful labour, and optimize the output of the production process, thereby reaping the benefits of automation in the garment manufacturing industry.
