An Integrated Method of 3D Garment Design

Abstract:We present an intuitive method that seamlessly integrates the whole process of garment design including 3D modeling, pattern development, garment simulation, and grading. Firstly, a sketch-based modeling method is proposed to design a 3D garment using editable control curves. Secondly, 2D patterns are developed by flattening 3D surface patches, then a 3D fine garment is formed directly based on the information of sewing relations and correspondence between 3D surfaces and 2D patterns. Lastly, garment templates are introduced to realize automatic design-preserving transfer of garments between human bodies with different sizes and shapes. The method is able to design 3D garments and 2D patterns efficiently and accurately. Our study provides an easy-to-learn and easy-to-use tool for both fashion designers and computer artists.

Abstract:A pattern design system is proposed, to encourage average persons to design patterns on their apparel by themselves. The system firstly acquires video images, then constructs tiling, finally maps the tiling to some certain shape of apparel and displays it. This process is configured by users through GUI. The system allows generating patterns from everyday objects by simply shooting the objects. The interaction with the system was praised to be interesting. The generated patterns were multifarious and funny. The system also achieved WYSWYG-what you see is what you get. © 2010 IEEE.

Abstract:To support the agile design for apparel customization,the tabular layouts of article characteristics(SML) was introduced into the apparel pattern modeling.Firstly,the method of pattern parameter analysis was illuminated,and the relationships between the control points of geometry model and the parameters were studied.Then the reuse pattern geometry model was established,and the extraction rules of the article characteristics was also discussed.To describe the pattern modeling and the reuse process,the logic framework of the apparel pattern modeling based on SML was constructed,and associations among the customs' individualized information,resource database and the matching rules were formally described.Supported by this logic framework,knowledge reuse and the pattern variant design were realized.Finally,an instance of the apparel pattern modeling and variant design for suit was given.

Abstract:With the advance in virtual reality applications, garment industry has strived for new developments. This paper reviews state-of-the-art CAD methods in 3D garment design. A large range of techniques are selected and organized into several key modules which form the core of a 3D garment design technology platform. In each module, basic techniques are presented first. Then advanced developments are systematically discussed and commented. The selected key modules – digital human modeling, 3D garment design and modification, numerical integration of draping, 2D pattern generation, geometric details modeling, parallel computation and GPU acceleration – are discussed in turn. Major challenges and solutions that have been addressed over the years are discussed. Finally, some of the ensuing challenges in 3D garment CAD technologies are outlined.

Abstract:The introduction of clothing pattern cutting systems represented a significant technological and economic breakthrough for the garment designer, as they noticeably reduced the amount of time and skill required to cut a fashionable garment offering an acceptable fit. Many different types of pattern system are currently in use across the world, each being appropriate for specific measurement systems, tailoring methods and for particular types of figure. These pattern-cutting systems have developed to accommodate cultural predilections and diverse preferences in respect of fashion silhouettes. Modern clothing pattern design work is increasingly performed using computer-based pattern-drafting systems. This commonly results in conformance with international designs, with its attendant loss of traditional design cues. An examination has been made of the distinctions between the shapes of clothes created using the English block pattern system and those that result from using the Chinese Proportion Assigned Cutting Method. The analysis shows that English patterns are more closely tailored to the body whilst Chinese patterns offer more freedom of movement. This knowledge should inform the clothing pattern designer, so that appropriate features may be incorporated into drafted patterns in order to facilitate the tailoring of clothing with apposite design characteristics.

Abstract:To solve the problem of data structure design in pattern preparation system of computerized flat knitting machine,a novel pattern data structure was introduced.Complex pattern can be designed through the pattern preparation system.As an important part of embedded computerized flat knitting machine,pattern preparation system provides graphical interface for user,extracts and processes the machining information of graphical clothes,compiles it into two pattern description files.Through Ethernet or USB interface,the two files were stored in embedded control system,and clothes were knitted completely by control system.Data structure and software structure of the pattern preparation system were described in detail.

Abstract:The design of geometric form is widely used in daily life, such as Product Design, Communication Design and Digital Animation. In fact, it is an indispensable element of artistic creation. However, there is still a large possibility to explore for clothing design. This study discusses the relationship between the features of geometric form and clothing patterns. Through the works of fashion designers analyse the techniques used and the possibility of development. In order to break the traditional concepts of pattern making and to dismantle the patterns, the geometric form was used as the basic structure to create a three-dimensional silhouette. As a result, the clothing would produce visual effects with the movement of body. The overall design process and creative outcomes contribute researchers different design thinking for further study and development.

Abstract:Personalization in the apparel industry shows importance and the potential for demand, but the existing personalization has unreasonable time cost, labor cost, and resource waste. To solve the problems of the waste of resources as well as both time and labor cost caused by manual pattern making in clothing personalization, a method of automatic garment pattern generation based on a parametric formula and the Python language was proposed. Based on the classification of common curves in patterns, three curve fitting algorithms based on different parameters were derived and combined with the Python language to achieve personalized generation of different patterns by classifying the parameters in the system into key parameters, secondary parameters, and variable parameters. Three different methods for verifying the accuracy of the garment patterns were proposed based on curve fitting similarity and three-dimensional virtual modeling, and the accuracy of the proposed system was verified. The results show that the accuracy and comfort of the patterns generated via the system were high. Meanwhile, the Python-language-based system fits well with the production system of enterprises, which can improve the rapid response capability of garment personalization, greatly save the time cost and labor cost of enterprises, reduce resource loss, and contribute to the sustainable development of the garment industry.

Computer-Aided Design Of Art Patterns

Abstract: Human artists often do the design of art patterns manually. The designer first imagines the art patterns in his mind, and then draws them on paper or canvas. This process is repeated until the desirable art patterns are created. It is time consuming and the novelty of the resulting art patterns is limited to the human’s imagination, which is difficult to meet the requirements for a huge amount of art patterns in a manufacturing industry such as textile. This chapter will mainly discuss how to let the computer assist in the generation of the art patterns, including: (1) Art pattern creation by fractals. It is based on the principles of fractal geometry, and performs the numerical calculation by the iterative function system. The output of the numerical data are colored to generate the resultant art patterns. (2) Art pattern creation by shape grammars. Shape grammars specify a mechanism for selecting and performing recursive rules for shape computations. The computer handles the representation and computation of shapes, rules, and the presentation of correct design alternatives. This frees the designer to specify, explore, develop design languages in terms of the shape grammar, and select alternatives for the desirable art patterns. (3) Layout-based creation of art patterns. Three basic layout-based art pattern design methods are presented: (a) How to convert the graphical layout into the resulting art patterns in terms of the specified structure of craftwork. (b) How to create an aesthetic layout of an art pattern by the regular layout. (c) How to automatically/semi-automatically place the user specified graphical entities by a specific artistic style. (4) Knowledge-based creation of art patterns. The artificial intelligence techniques are employed to represent the design knowledge and aesthetic conventions of art patterns, and then generate the resultant art patterns by reasoning on them.

Abstract:This paper focuses on a pattern design method for a 3D triangular garment surface. Firstly, some definitions of 3D style lines are proposed for designing the boundaries of patterns as drawing straight lines or splines on the triangular surface. Additionally some commonly used style lines are automatically generated to enhance design efficiency. Secondly, after style lines are preprocessed, a searching method is presented for quickly obtaining the boundaries and patches of a pattern on the 3D triangular surface. Finally a new pattern design reuse method is introduced by encoding/decoding the style line information. After style lines are encoded, the pattern design information can be saved in a pattern template and when decoding this template on a new garment surface, it automates the pattern generation for made-to-measure apparel products.
Design2GarmentCode: Turning Design Concepts to Tangible Garments Through Program Synthesis

Abstract:Sewing patterns, the essential blueprints for fabric cutting and tailoring, act as a crucial bridge between design concepts and producible garments. However, existing uni-modal sewing pattern generation models struggle to effectively encode complex design concepts with a multi-modal nature and correlate them with vectorized sewing patterns that possess precise geometric structures and intricate sewing relations. In this work, we propose a novel sewing pattern generation approach Design2GarmentCode based on Large Multimodal Models (LMMs), to generate parametric pattern-making programs from multi-modal design concepts. LMM offers an intuitive interface for interpreting diverse design inputs, while pattern-making programs could serve as well-structured and semantically meaningful representations of sewing patterns, and act as a robust bridge connecting the cross-domain pattern-making knowledge embedded in LMMs with vectorized sewing patterns. Experimental results demonstrate that our method can flexibly handle various complex design expressions such as images, textual descriptions, designer sketches, or their combinations, and convert them into size-precise sewing patterns with correct stitches. Compared to previous methods, our approach significantly enhances training efficiency, generation quality, and authoring flexibility. Our code and data will be publicly available.

3D Garment Surface Design Using Sketch-Based Modelling Method

Abstract:This paper focuses on 3D garment surface generation, modelling and design-reuse method in GCAD system. Firstly, the garment mesh is generated by piecewise technique, and a method is presented to enhance the mesh quality by using alternative cutting plane normal in getting the slice data. Secondly the garment sketch can be extracted from the boundaries of the garment sub-meshes. By making the loops below bust convex in horizontal and vertical direction, the garment surface and sketch can be quickly adjusted into the initial status of loose garment design. Thirdly, a constraint solution including constraint definition, classification and solving rules is given for enhancing the stability and friendliness during editing the garment sketch. The garment surface patches can be deformed as bilinear Coons surface model after the garment sketch updated there boundaries. Finally, an encoding/decoding method based on the garment sketch is presented for garment surface design-reuse. Encoding the garment sketch curves, the design information can be saved as a template, and when decoding this template on a new body, it automates the garment surface generation for made-to-measure apparel products.

Abstract:The personalized pattern generation method based on 2D body-measuring technology has considerable application potential in clothing e-commerce, remote clothing customization, clothing production, and other aspects. By inputting the front and side body images, this study proposed a new method of generating personalized patterns automatically. The silhouettes could be extracted from the body images to estimate body sizes and design style. The basic rules between the patterns and the body sizes were analysed, and the rules of the general pattern generation were established through a knowledge-based combination of the basic pattern and the style parameters. The sizes extracted from images were compared with the manually measured values, and the errors of these sizes were analysed. Sample pants were made and tried on with the automatic pattern generation system, and the experiments showed that the sample pants have a good fit at some key landmarks. As a result, this system can automatically generate personalized patterns and style designs based on 2D human body images, to improve garment fit and accelerate clothing customization.

Abstract:With the improvement of people's living standards, people's pursuit of clothing is becoming more and more diverse. As the main way to shape the external curve of the human body and reflect the texture of clothing materials, pleating technology is widely used in clothing. Different wrinkle expression techniques can often be seen in garment production and press conferences. Many designers are inseparable from the use of folding technology in their creation. The decoration of clothing is also constantly enriched. Diversified and multitype fabrics will bring great differences and influence to clothing and even affect the trend. Based on the computer animation technology, through the analysis of the principle of three-dimensional folds, this paper explores the formation of geometric patterns from two-dimensional plane fabric laying to three-dimensional, mainly through the techniques of pleating, kneading, lattice pleating, and pleating, so as to knead, stack or stack the fabrics orderly or randomly and naturally. The folded intersection area and nonfolded area are formed to form the basis of three-dimensional geometric folds. The simulation results show that the computer animation technology can effectively support the three-dimensional fold garment pattern design, select different materials for regional folding, present obvious three-dimensional geometric pattern folds, understand the expression forms of folds, and explain the application of folds in garment design, so as to provide some reference for fold garment design.

Abstract:This paper firstly analyzes the basic principle of generating fractal art graphics and the artistic features of graphics and then uses scientific visualization method to innovate and improve the theoretical model used in this paper. The generation principle and graphic characteristics of fractal graphics of complex dynamic system and L-system are mainly analyzed, and two kinds of art graphics—flower art graphics and geometric art graphics—have been developed. On this basis, the generated artistic figures are designed for the second time and then applied to the design of clothing patterns. By using MATLAB programming software to generate art graphics conforming to a specific style, combined with image processing software Photoshop to process and redesign the generated graphics, these art graphics can assist the design of clothing printing patterns and make patterns applicable for clothing fabrics. Finally, the fractal pattern theory is applied to silk scarves design and clothing fabric design through digital printing technology, which can fully reflect the practicability and superiority of clothing pattern design based on the fractal theory. Based on the experimental result, it shows that it is completely feasible to design clothing fabric printing patterns based on fractal theory, and the unusual artistic patterns designed have very considerable practical value. In addition, this method encourages creativity in the garment pattern design process and accelerates new design generation.

Abstract:Pattern making is one of the most vital parts of product development in the apparel or other textile industry. However, the traditional 2D pattern-making method is tedious, abstract, and time-consuming. Although several 2D techniques are available in the current research for automatic pattern generation, most of them have been limited to fixed styles. To solve the problem in pattern making, here a new 3D pattern making approach based on graphic coding is proposed. The textile with coded graphics as a flexible coordinate is used to establish the mapping relationship between 2D patterns and 3D garments, which allows a draped 3D shape to a 2D plane. The images with micro encoding graphics of key points are acquired to obtain 2D localization information from the fabric in 3D form. Based on image processing and encoding/decoding, the pattern can be generated according to the coordinate value of key points. The approach realizes the intuitive, accurate and rapid garment pattern generation, which offers possibilities for fashion designers or other users with little expertise in 2D pattern drafting to make patterns in any constructions. Also, as it can be effective in enhancing the efficiency and accuracy of MTM (Made-to-Measure). In addition to the apparel industry, the method also shows great application potential in shoes, home textiles, flexible digital tablets, and other related areas.

Application of the cubic Bézier spline curve in garment pattern design

Abstract:In the garment pattern design,the requirement for constructing a curve is a common occurrence.Namely,the curve passes through endpoints of a given polygon and is tangent to the first control line and the last control line of that polygon.The cubic Bzier spline curve is provided for this curve design.Compared with the arc spline and B spline methods,the cubic Bzier spline curve is characterized by easy accomplishment of a curve.The generated cubic Bzier spline curve is smooth because it is G~2 continuity at the patch point inside the curve.Compared with the common Bzier curve,the cubic Bzier spline curve can be adjusted by a designer according to parameters,so it can change the form of the curve and increase the diversity of garment styles.This modeling method will find wide applications in the field of computer-aided garment design.

Abstract:The design and application of pleats occupy an important position in plastic arts of garments. As means of plastic arts of clothing, the use of pleats is intended mainly to add aesthetic delight and demonstrate the variety of styles. From the plane to the solid, various forms of pleats in clothing design are shown in the design and selection of the materials and the variation of forms in plastic arts of the garments. In the process of practical production, the functional and aesthetic aspects of the pleats are much more beneficial to garment designers in showing plastic arts of garments.

Abstract:The technology of 3D garment virtual sewing has been developed for several decades, we proposed an approach to verify the virtual garments sewing effect. Here we took a sleeveless dress for our example, and the patterns of the dresses are made by expertise garment CAD software. The dresses patterns are used for two options. The first is for actual cutting and sewing. The second is for virtual sewing. The actual sleeveless dress is made by woolen fabric for our experiment. The parameters of the fabric mechanical properties in virtual sewing should be selected the same with the actual fabric. The fabric properties in this paper are mainly referred to shear property, tensile property and bearing property. We observe the surface shape of the finished dresses, compare the differences between the true and virtual sewing, and find the modified approach. Gray scale transformation and binary image processing are exploited for appearance comparison between real and simulated clothes sewn by the same 2D patterns. Folds and silhouettes comparison are main two features in our proposed approach. The sum of the squared differences is calculated for folds comparison, and the mismatches pixels are computed for silhouettes comparison. The aim of our research is proposed for forecasting the ready-made clothes which are made by given patterns, and check whether it is meet the requirement of the clients or not.
