Abstract:Stick-slip influence factors in practical application, such as supply pressure, sonic conductance of orifice, external force and initial volume of inlet chamber, were experimentally analyzed in order to avoid stick-slip phenomenon encountered in pneumatic cylinder. The critical stick-slip experiments of different working conditions were conducted based on the stick-slip criterion concluded from existing studies and analysis of the stick-slip phenomenon. The observation of the experimental curves shows that the final piston velocity is constant. An empirical discriminant function with supply pressure, sonic conductance of orifice and external force as parameters was established by processing the critical stick-slip experimental data for polynomial surface fitting, and its validity and feasibility were verified by performing experiments with another pneumatic cylinder of the same type. Results show that the empirical discriminant function can be used for instructing practical engineering applications by efficiently predicting whether the stick-slip will occur or not for the same type pneumatic cylinder with different supply pressures, sonic conductance of orifices and external forces.

Abstract:Proceedings of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, Part F: Journal of Rail and Rapid Transit, Ahead of Print. In order to explain the wheel-rail stick-slip vibration phenomenon of alocomotive in a curve, a co-simulation dynamic model taking into account adhesion control was established to reproduce the locomotive wheel-rail curve stick-slip vibration behavior, and the effect of parameters such as creep threshold, descent slope, rail surface condition and track curve radius on the stick-slip vibration behavior was measured by the traction force and the overall dispersion of adhesion coefficient. The results illustrate that the wheel-rail curve stick-slip vibration is caused by the dynamic traction force fluctuation under the adhesion control, and the increase of creep threshold will lead to the decrease of tractive force fluctuation amplitude and the decrease of stick-slip vibration intensity, which will increase the adhesion utilization rate, However, the increase of descent slope, the decrease of track curve radius and wheel-rail friction coefficient have the opposite effect on stick-slip vibration behavior. This phenomenon can be eliminated by improving the rail surface condition, expanding the track curve radius and lowering the locomotive traction force.

Abstract:Coke pushing machine is a device for pushing coke out of an oven chamber of a coke oven. In the process of pushing coke, the pushing ram is in contact with the ground of the carbonization chamber through the slipper. The coke pushing process can be seen as a kind of sliding friction. In order to better research on the dynamic characteristics of the coke pushing system, a two-degree-of-freedom mechanical model is designed in this paper. Then we analyze the stability and stick-slip behaviour of the system by calculating the critical instability speed and the critical stick-slip speed of this system. To analyze the effects of different system parameters on the stability and stick-slip motion of the system, a detailed simulation analysis is carried out. Numerical simulation results of this paper are of benefit to the design and improvement of the coke pushing system.

Abstract:Due to the inherent openness of the wheel-rail system, the wheel-rail interface is subject to the influence of a third medium, resulting in a low adhesion state. This study investigates the dynamic interaction between the wheel and rail under low adhesion conditions through the development of a numerical model employing anti-skid control strategies and infinite long track simulation technology. The model's validity is established by comparing its calculations with data from both the multi-body dynamics software UM and field tests. The numerical simulations uncover that the implementation of rail side lubrication significantly reduces longitudinal creep forces, thereby diminishing the wheelset's steering capabilities. Furthermore, it induces a notable increase in lateral wheel-rail interaction, consequently lowering safety indicators in vehicle operations. Rail side lubrication is found to substantially reduce rail side wear, resulting in an approximate 60% decrease in the maximum wear depth. Comprehensive friction control on the rail surface concurrently mitigates rail side and top surface wear. In instances of local low adhesion on both sides, the wheelset experiences pronounced stick-slip vibrations, leading to a deterioration in the longitudinal dynamic performance between the wheel and rail. Unilateral low adhesion situations prompt noticeable yawing and shaking motions within the low adhesion zone, resulting in evident lateral impact phenomena. Upon re-entering the normal adhesion zone from the low adhesion zone, the rail wear index experiences a significant peak, which means that the rails in this area are prone to severe local wear or fatigue.

Abstract:During train operation, water, oil, or oil-water mixtures may adhere to the wheel/rail contact interface, thereby altering the adhesion between the wheel and the rail. In order to study the adhesion characteristics of wheel/rail under wet conditions, a deterministic mixed lubrication model considering surface roughness and transient state is established in this paper, in which the quasi-system numerical and finite difference method are used for numerical solution. The results show that the influence of speed on the wheel-rail adhesion characteristics is more obvious, with the increase of train speed, the fluid dynamic pressure effect between the wheel-rail contact interface is enhanced, the contact pressure of the wheel-rail carried by the fluid film increases, the wheel-rail contact area accounts for the direct contact area of the proportion of the wheel-rail contact area continues to decrease, the thickness of the fluid film between the wheel-railcontinues to increase, and the coefficient of the wheel-rail adhesion decreases. Under the same working condition, with the increase of axle weight, the wheel-rail attachment coefficient increases, and when the axle weight reaches 22t, the attachment coefficient becomes obviously smaller; with the increase of creep-slip rate, the wheel-rail attachment coefficient increases obviously, and then stays relatively stable; with the increase of the wheel-rail surface roughness, the wheel-rail attachment coefficient also increases. Different wetting conditions between wheel/rail interfaces have more obvious effects on wheel/rail adhesion characteristics. In particular, under the same working conditions, the film thickness between the wheel/rail is the largest and the wheel/rail adhesion coefficient is the smallest when the wheel/rail interface is lubricated by oil. It is worth noting that when oil lubrication occurs on the surface of the wheel -rail, the thickness of the fluid film between the wheel-rail is the largest, and the coefficient of adhesion of the wheel-rail is the smallest, which brings safety hazards to the train operation. Therefore, it is necessary to regularly check and clean up the wheel-rail surface, especially the oil contaminants.

Abstract:Carbon and copper materials are commonly used for pantograph and catenary system in railways, and the sliding electric contact has a prominent effect on the current-collection quality of pantograph and catenary system. This paper presents the key characteristics of sliding electric contact between couples of carbon and metal materials, where the contact resistance, the temperature rise and the micro morphology are respectively examined. Firstly, changes of contact resistance with the current, contact force and the speed were studied. Meanwhile, influence of the current on the characteristics of temperature rise of the carbon strip was discussed. Finally, the micro morphology of carbon strip was illustrated under different conditions, and discussed with the simulation results based on a magneto-hydrodynamic model.

Abstract:The adhesion test under the conditions of different wheel/rail contacts, such as various speeds, axle-loads, contamination situation, was carried out. In order to simulate track irregularities, the rollers of the test rig were excited with hydraulic system in the test. The test results showed that the adhesion coefficient of wheel/rail decreased with increasing in the axle-load and running speed under the water contaminated condition. Also it was found that the adhesion coefficient dropped as an increase in the excitation frequency under the water contaminated condition. By modifying Kalker’s FASTSIM program, the numerical simulation for wheel/rail adhesion was also carried out. The results obtained were in good agreement with the test results. Based on the obtained test and simulation results, correlations between wheel/rail adhesion and locomotive traction power have been discussed.

Abstract:The key to traction control in locomotive systems is adjusting the axle traction torque through adhesion control. In traditional adhesion control systems, due to the inability to detect the peak adhesion coefficient of the rail surface in realtime, locomotives are prone to spinning and sliding phenomena under different rail surface conditions. This reduces the utilization of adhesion and can even lead to irreversible damage such as tread detachment and rail wear. Therefore, this paper proposes a machine learning-based rail surface recognition method to identify the rail surface condition online and set the peak adhesion coefficient for different rail surfaces. The output torque of the traction motor is dynamically adjusted based on the set reference peak adhesion point to fully utilize the current adhesion force between the rail surface and wheels. A locomotive multi-axis adhesion control model is established to validate the effectiveness of the rail surface recognition algorithm. The results show that the improved adhesion control method effectively prevents wheel spinning, improves the stability of locomotive operation, and reduces the loss of adhesion utilization.

Abstract:The stick–slip phenomenon, the initial stage when the traction wheel starts sliding on the rail, is a critical operation that needs to be detected quickly to control the traction drive. In this study, we have developed an experimental model that uses acceleration sensors mounted on the wheel to evaluate the amplitude of the stick–slip phenomena. These sensors can alert the driver or assist the traction control unit when a stick–slip occurs. We propose a method to reduce the amplitude of the stick–slip phenomenon using special hydraulic dampers and viscous dampers mounted on the tractive axles of the locomotive to prevent slipping during acceleration. This practical solution, validated through numerical simulation, can be readily implemented in railway systems. The paper’s findings can be used to select the necessary sensors and corresponding vibration dampers. By implementing these sliding reducers, a locomotive can significantly improve traction, apply more torque to the wheel, and increase the load of a carrier train, instilling confidence in the efficiency of the proposed solution.

Abstract:DSA200 pantograph and CH160 catenary are being in service in China on SS7 electric locomotive. Dynamic study of the pantograph/catenary system found that the contact force between pantograph and contact wire vibrated periodically with the running of trains. Both of the amplitude and frequency of the dynamic contact force increased with the increase of running speeds. In this paper, the effects of dynamic contact force on tribological properties of the pure carbon strip were studied on a homemade pin-on-disk tribometer. A critical point of friction coefficient, wear rate and current-carrying quality at the velocity of 80 km/h was detected subjected to dynamic contact force. Tribological properties of the pure carbon strip deteriorated abruptly when the train ran faster than 80 km/h. Oxidation film on the surface of the strip was produced firstly, and then it grew slowly, at last it was destroyed rapidly with the increase of the running speeds. This transformation leaded to the sudden shift of friction coefficient and wear rate. Meanwhile, the critical point of arcing rate (2%) at 80 km/h was tested. Current-carrying quality of the strip deteriorated abruptly accompanied by the rapidly raised arcing rate. Simultaneously, cracks were generated and extended inner the strip. These cracks destroyed the strip's mechanical property and accelerated the arc erosion. The wear mechanism transferred from mechanical wear to arc erosion with the increase of arcing rate, which were proved to be the most important failure types for pure carbon strip. This study obtained the evolution processes of the tribological properties in pantograph/catenary system, expecting to provide some useful suggestions for the safe operation of locomotives.

Abstract:The sliding electric contact of pantograph/contact wire systems plays a significant part in the current collection stability and operation life of pantograph/contact wire systems. This paper addresses the evolutionary process of sliding electric contact of pantograph/contact wire systems by analyzing three key characteristics including contact resistance, temperature distribution and microstructure. The influence of electric current on contact resistance was interpreted. Furthermore, the evolution of the spatial temperature distribution of the carbon strip was obtained in the zigzag movement, while the dominant role of electric effect in temperature rise was demonstrated. In the end, the wear morphology differences under pure friction and current-carrying conditions were analyzed. The formation of radial cracks was illustrated and its influenced on the wear process was discussed.

Abstract:Perfect sliding contact which requires appropriate contact force between pantograph and contact wire is the key point to guarantee the stability of current collection in locomotive. In order to study on characterization of electrical contact between pantograph and catenary, first, a novel test apparatus of pantograph electrical contact has been developed according to the filed application. The apparatus can simulate laterally (zigzag) movement, vertical vibration and the flexible line contact between pantograph contact strip and contact wire. Then, electrical contact experiments are carried out using this apparatus. Characteristics of static contact resistance under various contact force and traction current are analyzed. A fitted formula for contact resistance is proposed which have two independent variables of contact force and traction current. Possible mechanism for variation of contact resistance is represented in microscopic view of contact surface. It is demonstrated that the static contact resistance decreases with the contact force and traction current increasing.

Abstract:Proceedings of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, Part F: Journal of Rail and Rapid Transit, Ahead of Print. The utilization of friction modifiers (FMs) can reduce the adhesion coefficient of the top-of-rail to a moderate level, yielding a series of benefits. In this study, the influence of the FM application amount on the adhesion coefficient, noise, and braking distance was explored under field conditions. Results showed that when the FM application amount exceeded threshold values, the braking distance of the locomotive was greatly extended and the friction control performance of FM reached saturation. The FM application amount and application frequency were put forward through a simplified calculation process, which gave values of 0.33 mL/axle and 10axles/application, respectively. These application parameters achieve the desired intermediate friction level along with appropriate reductions in the noise and the lateral force.
