Abstract:Based on a maglev experimental line driven by long-stator linear synchronous motors,the design of a vehicle that would run on the line was introduced.The design requirements,materials and structure of the vehicle's chassis and body were expounded.The software package Unigraphics(3D-CAD 3D-CAM software) was used to visually represent the design results.An important part of the vehicle,i.e.levitation cantilever,was analyzed about its mechanical property with the software package ANSYS(FEA software).The analytical results prove that the design of the levitation cantilever meets the requirement.The testing results of the levitation cantilever's mechanical property proved that the analytical results were exact.Finally the photo of the experimental vehicle's chassis was shown.

Abstract:Based on EN 12663‐1:2010 Railw ay applications— Structural requirements o f railway vehicle bodies ,the stress analysis was conducted for the carbody structure of overhead contact system maintenance vehicle .The finite element model of carbody was set up ,and the static strength and modes were analyzed by general finite element software of ANSYS .The calculation results show that the carbody’s strength and stiffness can satisfy the relative design requirements .

Engineering Failure Analysis

Abstract:This paper focuses on the structural failures of various high-speed trains in China. The reasons for the structural failures of the trains are analyzed based on their design and service condition. Based on examples considered in the present paper, an optimization design method and a reasonable structure are put forward. For the motor car of the high speed train “Blue Arrow” dynamic stresses in service are investigated through field tests and theory analysis. According to the dynamic stress obtained by measurement on site, some results to evaluate service life are obtained.

Abstract:Abstract This paper proposes to combine multi-body dynamics and finite element method to study the fatigue strength and fatigue life of the bogie frame from the perspective of taking the vehicle as a whole. The analysis model established by the multi-body dynamics simulation software SIMPACK, the dangerous positions are determined from FEA software ANSYS, Based on the load-time history and Miner cumulative damage theory, the fatigue strength prediction is carried out using n-soft software, the study shows that the time-load history of each key position obtained by simulating working conditions can predict the life of components more accurately, this method can be applied to the initial stage of product design.

Abstract:Vehicle body structure design is a vital process during the development of a new car. In the early phase of conceptional design, to optimize the body structure in an all round way has become a new trend gradually. Vehicle performance target is not only a precondition for optimal design, but also an evaluation of the completed structure. Based on development of a mini electric vehicle, the methods of how to determine the target values for body structure performances are discussed. At the same time, a topology optimization for the body structure is conducted according to the above decided performance targets.

Abstract:This paper develops a novel approach for the lightweight design of a car body frame. In this approach, the cross-sectional dimensions of a car body frame are treated as design variables. First, sampling points are created based on Latin Hypercube Sampling (LHS), and then Design of Experiment (DOE) is conducted. After that, an analysis is done to obtain those design variables affect the results most. Finally, Sequential Quadratic Programming (SQP) is utilized to solve the optimization problem while the amount of design variables is reduced according to the former analysis. The advantage of this method is that it reduces the burden of optimization algorithms and offers a practical way for the lightweight design of a car body frame.

Abstract:Although the electric vehicles (EVs) have become the main development of the automotive industry, there is still very limited knowledge about the design method of EVs’ body structure. This paper substantially increases this limited knowledge by developing an EV’s aluminum alloy body frame structure design (EVFD) method based on battery arrangements. The main concept of the EVFD approach is the development of the parametric knowledge base to facilitate performance driven design of body structure in concept design stage, including the battery sub-libraries designed by vehicle power performances and the modular body frame structure sub-libraries and cross section of profile sub-libraries designed by structure performances. The layout of vehicle is firstly determined based on battery volume which calculated on the basis of power performance of EVs. And then, the body frame structures are designed by multi-load topology optimization and multi-objective parametric optimization based on the body structure performance, considering the battery layout and its mass distribution. The developed body structure knowledge base is screened through comparing their structural mechanical properties. The feasibility and accuracy of selected EV’s aluminum alloy body frame structure is verified by experiment. In this paper, the case study demonstrates that the proposed EVFD method based on battery arrangement can be effectively used to design aluminum alloy body frame structure of EVs, which provides a reference to other EV’s body structure design. Due to the performance driven design concept employed, the designed body structure for EV meets the requirements of lightweight, dynamic performance, and structural mechanical properties.

Abstract:The Finite Element Method (FEM) analysis on body structure of a hybrid electric bus is proceeded. The stress and strain distributions are obtained in four situations: bending, turning, braking, torsion. Meanwhile, the modal characteristics analysis is accomplished. The result indicated that the designed body structure satisfied the requirements of strength and stiffness criterion. The vibration frequencies are all out of the bus frequency. That is the resonance phenomena would not occur. The theoretic bases are given for improving design, and the analytical results are helpful to the optimized design of bus body structure.

Abstract:In order to simulate the matching relationship between split axle boxes and consider the influence of bolt preload on the axle box, every part of the axle box body is modeled by ANSYS. At the same time, in order to simulate the transmission of the lateral force, the false shaft and the false bearing are established to cooperate with the axle housing. The static strength and fatigue strength of the axle box and bolt couplings are analyzed under the calculated loads and operating conditions specified in the EN 13749-2005 "Railway Applications - Wheelsets and Bogies Regulations for Bogies - Frame Structure Requirements" standard. In the assessment of fatigue strength, since the fatigue curve of steel used in China’s railways is not currently available, the Goodman-smith steel fatigue limit diagram provided by ORE B12/RP17 (82) is temporarily replaced with the three-direction stress state into a one way stress state, in order to calculate the average stress and stress amplitude of the stress cycle. It can be seen from the calculation that the static strength and fatigue strength of the high-speed EMU axle box and bolt coupling meet the design requirements under the load specified in EN13749.
Fatigue Strength Evaluation of Welded Structure on Aluminum Alloy Car Body Based on Multi-Axial Stress

Abstract:Abstract With the continuous development of the subway, the demand for its safety and stability is getting higher and higher. It is of great significance to accurately evaluate the fatigue life of the carbody to ensure the subway's safe operation. In this paper, the finite element model of a subway head carbody was established, and the fatigue strength of the welded structure on the carbody was evaluated based on Multi-axial stress. The local coordinate system was defined according to the geometrical characteristics of the welds. Local stresses perpendicular and parallel to the weld seam were obtained to calculate the stress ratio, stress range, and allowable stress value corresponding to the stress component. According to the joint fatigue resistance, the components of the degree of utilization and comprehensive degree of utilization are calculated to evaluate the structural fatigue strength under the survival rate of 97.5% and load cycles of 10 7 . The evaluation of the fatigue strength of the pivotal weld joints shows that the fatigue strength of the aluminum alloy carbody meets the design requirements, the weld of the carbody has a strong ability to resist fatigue damage. The fatigue strength of the weld is mainly affected by the normal stress component, while the shear stress has little effect on the fatigue strength of the structure. In addition, compared with the filleted weld joint and the butt-welded joint, the normal stress parallels to and perpendicular to the weld direction and shear stress have the greatest effect on the lap-welded joint. Meanwhile, the comprehensive degree of utilization of the lap-welded joint is the largest at 0.49. The introduction of multi-axial stress for the fatigue strength evaluation is beneficial when considering the material utilization degree in multiple structural directions. This research results provide a reference for fatigue strength evaluation of subway carbody's welded structure.

Abstract:Background. Ensuring the profitability of rail transportation and maintaining their leadership positions necessitates the commissioning of promising rolling stock designs. Such rolling stock should not only have improved technical and economic indicators, but also ensure the minimization of empty runs. Therefore, the creation of promising designs of rolling stock, designed for the simultaneous transportation of different types of cargo, is a very topical issue. Objective. Illumination of the results of determining the strength of the frame of a two-section hopper car with a closed center beam design under the main operating modes of loading. Methods. In order to reduce the material consumption of the frame of the hopper car, the optimization method for safety reserves was used. For this purpose, the strength of a typical frame of a hopper car was calculated using the finite element method implemented in the SolidWorks Simulation software package. To reduce the material consumption of the hopper car frame, it is proposed to use a rectangular profile for the center sill. Results. The use of a rectangular profile for the center beam of the hopper car frame is substantiated. At the same time, it becomes possible to reduce its weight by 2.3% compared to the standard version. The results of calculations for the strength of the hopper car frame showed that the maximum equivalent stresses in it are 341.5 MPa and do not exceed the permissible values. Conclusions. The conducted research will contribute to the creation of developments in the design of advanced rolling stock structures, as well as to increase the efficiency of railway transport operation.
