Abstract:A filling-factor-graded wavelike two-dimensional photonic crystal (2DPC) possessing a light-path bending effect that is polarization dependent is theoretically studied by using a qualitative analysis of the isofrequency curves. The numerical simulation results obtained by using the finite-difference time-domain method demonstrate that such a graded 2DPC has potential applications in a polarization splitter and a parallel-plane resonant cavity. A new kind of waveguide structure that combines a filling-factor-graded wavelike 2DPC and one-dimensional multilayer thin films is also discussed.
Fabrication and property of polystyrene opaline heterostructure

Abstract:The 3-dimension heterostructure of opal was prepared by vertical sedimentation using monodisperse polystyrene beads with diameter of 260, 305, and 325 nm, respectively. The scanning electronic microscopy photos show that the hetero-structure is in high quality structure. The transmission ultraviolet-visible spectra of the hetero-structure were observed. It was found that the photonic bandgap of the opal hetero-structure was consisted by the superposition of its components opals. On the other hand, the thicker of opal film the weaker the light penetrated through the hetero-structure. And the existence of defects in the component opals would break the bandgap and led to the decrease of the transmission of incident light.

Abstract:By taking advantage of the hydrophobicity of dry polystyrene colloidal crystal (opal) films and the large surface tension of water, a convectively self-assembled polystyrene opal film on a hydrophilic glass substrate can be peeled off from the substrate and floated on the water surface. A layer transfer technique was developed to sequentially stack floating opal films of different sphere sizes, resulting in opaline hetero photonic crystals. The feasibility of this technique to planar defect engineering in a self-assembled colloidal photonic crystal was also demonstrated. Both structural observation and optical characterization confirmed the crystalline integrity of the resultant opaline heterostructures.

Abstract:We demonstrate the fabrication of free-standing inverse opals with gradient pores via a combination of electrophoresis and electroplating techniques. Our processing scheme starts with the preparation of multilayer colloidal crystals by conducting sequential electrophoresis with polystyrene (PS) microspheres in different sizes (300, 600, and 1000 nm). The critical factors affecting the stacking of individual colloidal crystals are discussed and relevant electrophoresis parameters are identified so the larger PS microspheres are assembled successively atop of smaller ones in an orderly manner. In total, we construct multilayer colloidal crystals with vertical stacking of microspheres in 300/600, 300/1000, and 300/600/1000 nm sequences. The inverse opals with gradient pores are produced by galvanostatic plating of Ni, followed by the selective removal of colloidal template. Images from scanning electron microscopy exhibit ideal multilayer close-packed structures with well-defined boundaries among different layers. Results from porometer analysis reveal the size of bottlenecks consistent with those of interconnected pore channels from inverse opals of smallest PS microspheres. Mechanical properties determined by nanoindentation tests indicate significant improvements for multilayer inverse opals as compared to those of conventional single-layer inverse opals.

Abstract:Anisotropic photonic crystal materials have long been pursued for their broad applications. A novel method for creating chemically patterned inverse opals is proposed here. The patterning technique is based on selective photolysis of a photolabile polymer together with postmodification on released amine groups. The patterning method allows regioselective modification within an inverse opal structure, taking advantage of selective chemical reaction. Moreover, combined with the unique signal self-reporting feature of the photonic crystal, the fabricated structure is capable of various applications, including gradient photonic bandgap and dynamic chemical patterns. The proposed method provides the ability to extend the structural and chemical complexity of the photonic crystal, as well as its potential applications.

Abstract:Pb0.56Sr0.44Zr0.52Ti0.48O3 (PSZT) inverse opal photonic crystals (PCs) have been synthesized by a process of self-assembly in combination with a sol–gel procedure. PSZT inverse opals show pure perovskite structure with good orders in three dimensions. The evident photonic band gaps have been observed in the transmittance spectra with a blue-shift phenomenon due to the decrease of opal template periods. PSZT inverse opals also exhibit the reflection peaks in basic agreement with the calculated results. This three-dimensional (3D) ordered PSZT inverse opals have shown interesting optical characteristics and potential applications in optoelectronic and photonic devices.

Abstract:This review summarizes recent progress of the ordered macroporous composites with the opals and inverse opal structure. Synthesis and performance of the composites are emphasized. Composition of the ordered composites is tunable ranging within metal, metal alloy, metal oxide, polymer, carbon and hydrogel. The ordered structure gives brilliant color effects, which is useful for sensors and photonic crystals. The interconnected macroporous structure provides easiness for mass transportation and species culturing.

Abstract:The influence of thickness gradient and structural order on the spectral response of opal photonic crystals (PhCs) grown by evaporation-induced self-assembly (EISA) are presented. SEM imaging and angle resolved optical transmission spectroscopy are used to investigate the evolution of the PBG along a thickness gradient for opals grown from five different colloidal sphere concentrations at two different evaporation rates. The degradation of structural order along the thickness gradient is demonstrated, the occurrence of which attenuates the PBG with the thinning of the opal film and results in asymmetrical angle-resolved transmission spectra. The asymmetry in transmission intensity becomes more pronounced for opals grown from lower volume fractions, where secondary Bragg reflections also appear at low incident angles.

Abstract:The monodisperse polymethyl methacrylate(PMMA) microspheres were prepared by soap-free emulsion polymerization .The PMMA opal template with surface-centered cubic(FCC) structure was constructed on the textile substrate by vertical deposition self-assembly ,and SiO2 nano-particles were filled .Then ,ultraviolet irradiation technology was used to remove the template to prepare SiO 2 inverse opal photonic crystal .Marvin laser particle size analyzer was used to test PMMA ,SiO2 microspheres and PDI .The surface morphology of PMMA opal template ,PMMA/SiO2 composite photonic crystal ,and SiO2 inverse opal structure photonic crystal was observed by FESEM . The results show that PMMA nanospheres with the particle size of around 458 nm are suitable for constructing opal templates and 60 nm SiO2 nanospheres can be filled with opal templates at the concentration of 5~8 wt% .After the removal of the PMMA template by UV irradiation ,a three-dimensional orderly SiO2 inverse opal structure can be prepared ,with even hole diameter ,orderly arrangement and FCC structure .

Abstract:We present a detailed study of the effect of planar stacking disorder on optical properties of inverted opal photonic crystals. Systems with periodic stacking sequences are first studied that include face centered cubic, hexagonal close-packed, and doubly hexagonal close-packed photonic crystals. For the structures with periodic stacking order, we evaluate the band structure followed by calculation of transmission spectrum along the direction perpendicular to the hexagonal close-packing plane of the structures. Inverted opal photonic crystals with random stacking sequences are then studied by calculating average transmittance of the photonic crystal slabs over various random stacking configurations. The position and width of the lowest stop gap along the direction normal to the hexagonal close-packing plane is found to be invariant, regardless of the stacking sequence in the photonic crystal. We show how the propagation properties at higher frequencies are affected by the stacking configurations (both periodic and disordered stacking sequences), particularly those near the edges of the absolute band gap. The obtained results are directly relevant to transmission/reflection experiments on inverted opal photonic crystals with complete band gap.

Abstract:Nanocrystalline Ag doped silica glass inverse opal films were prepared by polystyrene colloidal crystals templating with a sol-gel chemistry method.And colloidal srystal template was made by vertical deposition method via a self-assembly process.The Ag nanocrystals sixe is by estimated by Scherrer Formula from X-ray diffraction and long-ranged orders are confirmed in inverse opal structures by scanning electron microscopy.The band gap of the inverse opal structure appears brightly colored and the angular depehdehce of the stop band is consistent with Bragg's law.

Abstract:Ferroelectric inverse opals are promising candidates for tunable photonic crystals due to their electro-optical and elasto-optical properties. In this work, inverse opal photonic crystals of (Pb0.9La0.1)(Zr0.65Ti0.35)O-3 (PLZT) were prepared through a self-assembled template replication procedure on a large area (typically 2cm x 1cm). The annealing process was optimized. The surface and cross-section were studied by a scanning electron microscope (SEM). X-ray Diffraction (XRD) results proved that PLZT in the ferroelectric perovskite phase was obtained. A band gap was observed in the transmission spectra and compared with the theoretical value.

Abstract:The lead lanthanum titanate (PLT) inverse opal photonic crystals were prepared by the self-assembly technique in combination with a sol–gel method. In the preparation process, PLT precursors were filled into the interstices of the opal template assembled by monodispersive polystyrene microspheres. The polystyrene template was then removed by calcination at 650°C for 5h, meanwhile, a perovskite PLT inverse opal photonic crystal was formed. An optical micrograph shows that the PLT inverse opals reflect green–blue light strongly. Moreover, a photonic band gap was observed by reflective spectra of PLT sample.

Abstract:Monodisperse silica spheres of 252 not with a standard deviation of 5.7% are prepared by Stober method. By comparison of both of media, ethanol instead of water is used to assemble opal, and the artificial opal has been prepared by the sedimentation in ethanol of silica spheres. The structure of the opal prepared has been examined and discussed. The results show that the artificial opal has a structure similar to the face-centered cubic (fcc) type packed system with silica spheres. Transmission measurements of the artificial opal have been conducted, which shows that the artificial opal is quasi-full band gap silica photonic crystals in the visible region.

Abstract:We report a simple and cost-effective double templating method for fabricating large-area three-dimensional metallic photonic crystals of controlled thickness. A self-assembled polystyrene opal was used as the first template to fabricate a silica inverse opal on a gold-coated glass substrate via sol–gel processing. Gold was subsequently infiltrated to the pores of the silica inverse opal using electrochemical deposition. A high-quality three-dimensional gold photonic crystal was obtained after removal of the secondary template (silica inverse opal). The effects of template sphere size and deposition current density on the gold growth rate, and the resulting morphology and growth mechanism of the gold opal, were investigated.

Abstract:We made photonic crystals composed of artificial opals infiltrated with ZnS semiconductor nanocrystals by using self-assembly and solvothermal methods. SEM images show that the silica spheres exhibit a well-ordered arrangement and the ZnS nanocrystals infiltrate within the opal templates by heterogeneous nucleation and growth processing, and the as-synthesized ZnS nanocrystals reveal a cubic phase from X-ray diffraction pattern. Furthermore, the optical properties of the infiltrated opals with different ZnS filling ratio are also studied by transmission spectroscopy, respectively. It is proposed that the position of the stop band can be easily designed by controlling the infiltration ratio of ZnS. These results demonstrate an easy-to-handle and efficient route to obtain high performance photonic crystal structures.

Abstract:Ferroelectric inverse opals are promising in making tunable photonic crystals. In this work, inverse opal photonic crystals of several ferroelectric materials such as (Pb(1-x)Lax)(Zr1-yTiy)O-3 (PLZT), SrxBa(1-x)Nb(2)O(6) (SBN) and PbTiO3 were prepared respectively by a sol-gel procedure. Synthetic opals of monodisperse submicrometer polystyrene (PS) spheres were used as the templates and precursor solutions were infiltrated into the interstices of the templates. ne templates were removed by the following calcination process, which also realized the crystallization. Annealing process was optimized for each ferroelectric material. A scanning electron microscopy was used to observe the pattern of the inverse opals. XRD results proved that they were in desired ferroelectric phase respectively. The final samples were well ordered in all 3 dimensions within small domains. The average size of a single ordered domain in the SBN sample is about 20 P in x 40 mu m. The size in PLZT and PbTiO3 samples is about 30 mu m x 50 mu m. Those domains distribute equably on an area of 2cm x 1cm on the substrates.

Abstract:Evaporation-induced self-assembly of colloidal particles is one of the most versatile fabrication routes to obtain large-area colloidal crystals; however, the formation of uncontrolled "drying cracks" due to gradual solvent evaporation represents a significant challenge of this process. While several methods are reported to minimize crack formation during evaporation-induced colloidal assembly, here an approach is reported to take advantage of the crack formation as a patterning tool to fabricate microscopic photonic structures with controlled sizes and geometries. This is achieved through a mechanistic understanding of the fracture behavior of three different types of opal structures, namely, direct opals (colloidal crystals with no matrix material), compound opals (colloidal crystals with matrix material), and inverse opals (matrix material templated by a sacrificial colloidal crystal). This work explains why, while direct and inverse opals tend to fracture along the expected {111} planes, the compound opals exhibit a different cracking behavior along the nonclose-packed {110} planes, which is facilitated by the formation of cleavage-like fracture surfaces. The discovered principles are utilized to fabricate photonic microbricks by programming the crack initiation at specific locations and by guiding propagation along predefined orientations during the self-assembly process, resulting in photonic microbricks with controlled sizes and geometries.

Abstract:Highly monodispersed colloidal silica spheres in sub-micrometre size with distribution standard deviation less than 5% were synthesized by a chemical method. Using the self-crystallization of the silica spheres, we successfully obtained the three-dimensional close-packed face-centred-cubic silica matrices and artificial opals. Then, a colloidal photonic crystal embedded with CdS quantum dots (QDs) was also chemically prepared by using artificial opals as a template. A reflection spectra study reveals that both artificial opals with and without CdS QDs possess (111) directional photonic bandgap features.
