Abstract:Natural fiber systems provide inspirations for artificial fiber spinning and applications. Through a long process of trial and error, great progress has been made in recent years. The natural fiber itself, especially silks, and the formation mechanism are better understood, and some of the essential factors are implemented in artificial spinning methods, benefiting from advanced manufacturing technologies. In addition, fiber-based materials produced via bioinspired spinning methods find an increasingly wide range of biomedical, optoelectronic, and environmental engineering applications. This paper reviews recent developments in the spinning and application of bioinspired fiber systems, introduces natural fiber and spinning processes and artificial spinning methods, and discusses applications of artificial fiber materials. Views on remaining challenges and the perspective on future trends are also proposed.

Abstract:The spinning process principle of composite yarn was introduced.According to the rebuilding cotton spinning machine and based on the practice in the spinning process,spinning technological process of composite yarn is defined.Some experiments on the primary processing parameters of the composite spinning yarn were carried out,and the influences of spinning factors on composite yarn quality were analyzed by the spinning processes.The problems of end-breakage and unevenness etc. of composite yarn in the spinning process were resolved by reasonable spinning process configuration.The effective technical measures and process parameters were discussed.The results could be as a reference data for improving the quality of composite yarn and developing the new products further.

Abstract:Textiles have a very long history, but they are far from becoming outdated. They gain new importance in technical applications, and man-made fibers are at the center of this ongoing innovation. The development of high-tech textiles relies on enhancements of fiber raw materials and processing techniques. Today, melt spinning of polymers is the most commonly used method for manufacturing commercial fibers, due to the simplicity of the production line, high spinning velocities, low production cost and environmental friendliness. Topics covered in this review are established and novel polymers, additives and processes used in melt spinning. In addition, fundamental questions regarding fiber morphologies, structure-property relationships, as well as flow and draw instabilities are addressed. Multicomponent melt-spinning, where several functionalities can be combined in one fiber, is also discussed. Finally, textile applications and melt-spun fiber specialties are presented, which emphasize how ongoing research efforts keep the high value of fibers and textiles alive.

Abstract:Textile Research Journal, Ahead of Print. Compact spinning has emerged as a contemporary spinning technology that has garnered significant attention due to its capacity to produce yarns with excellent properties. The strategy is a variation of conventional ring spinning that seeks to get rid of the spinning triangle while improving the uniformity, strength, and hairiness of the yarn. In compact spinning, fiber condensation is achieved by negative pressure airflow, which compresses the fibers and reduces their thickness. This results in a higher packing density of the fibers, leading to stronger and more uniform yarns. In this article, we provide a comprehensive overview of compact spinning technology, covering its principle, fiber condensation method, and the types of machines used. The quality of the yarn is greatly influenced by various systems and parameters such as lattice apron, air suction slot geometry, airflow fields, and twist mechanism employed in compact spinning. We present a compendium of the various developments established in studies on compact spinning, which could serve as a platform for developing new techniques in compact spinning for the production of high-quality yarns with low economic burdens. This review discusses compact spinning, two main systems, machines, influential parameters/peripherals, disadvantages, and the future prospects of compact spinning. Additionally, we provide a summary of previous research on compact spinning, highlighting its benefits and advantages over traditional ring spinning. Furthermore, we discuss the impact of guiding devices and lattice apron type on yarn quality. We also explore the potential of three-dimensional (3D) printing technology in enhancing the performance and design of compact spinning machines.

Abstract:The rapid development of information and communication technology has driven the demand for higher data transmission rates. Multi-core optical fiber, with its ability to transmit multiple signals simultaneously, has emerged as a promising solution to meet this demand. Additionally, due to its characteristics such as multi-channel transmission, high integration, spatial flexibility, and versatility, multi-core optical fibers hold vast potential in sensing applications. However, the manufacturing technology of multi-core fiber is still in its early stages, facing challenges such as the design and fabrication of high-quality cores, efficient coupling between cores, and the reduction of crosstalk. In this paper, an overview of the current status and future prospects of multi-core fiber manufacturing technology has been presented, and their limitations will be discussed. Some potential solutions to overcome these challenges will be proposed. Their potential applications in optical fiber sensing will also be summarized.

Abstract:Many natural fibers are lightweight and display remarkable strength and toughness. These properties originate from the fibers’ hierarchical structures, assembled from the molecular to macroscopic scale. The natural spinning systems that produce such fibers are highly energy efficient, inspiring researchers to mimic these processes to realize robust artificial spinning. Significant developments have been achieved in recent years toward the preparation of high-performance bio-based fibers. Beyond excellent mechanical properties, bio-based fibers can be functionalized with a series of new features, thus expanding their sophisticated applications in smart textiles, electronic sensors, and biomedical engineering. Here, recent progress in the construction of bio-based fibers is outlined. Various bioinspired spinning methods, strengthening strategies for mechanically strong fibers, and the diverse applications of these fibers are discussed. Moreover, challenges in reproducing the mechanical performance of natural systems and understanding their dynamic spinning process are presented. Finally, a perspective on the development of biological fibers is given.

Abstract:For discovering the relationship between structure and tensile properties of rotor-spun composite yarns,the yarn structure and tensile characteristics were investigated by theoretical and experimental methods,and the morphology of yarn breakage ends were observed by the Questar hi-scope video microscope system.The results indicate that the structure of composite yarns depends on the difference between the filament tension and the tension of staple fiber strand.By controlling the filament over-feed ratio,different kinds of composite yarns can be produced under the constant conditions of normal rotor spinning.The tensile process and breakage ends morphology of composite yarns are related to the yarn structure.Compared with the normal rotor-spun yarn,the tensile properties of composite yarns are improved.

Abstract:Owing to the intrinsic excellent mechanical, electrical, and thermal properties of carbon nanotubes (CNTs), carbon nanotube fibers (CNTFs) have been expected to become promising candidates for the next-generation of high-performance fibers. They have received considerable interest for cutting-edge applications, such as ultra-light electric wire, aerospace craft, military equipment, and space elevators. Wet-spinning is a broadly utilized commercial technique for high-performance fiber manufacturing. Thus, compared with array spinning from drawable CNTs vertical array and direct dry spinning from floating catalyst chemical vapor deposition (FCCVD), the wet-spinning technique is considered to be a promising strategy to realize the production of CNTFs on a large scale. In this tutorial review, we begin with a summative description of CNTFs wet-spinning process. Then, we discuss the high-concentration CNTs wet-spinning dope preparation strategies and corresponding non-covalent adsorption/charge transfer mechanisms. The filament solidification during the coagulation process is another critical procedure for determining the configurations and properties for derived CNTFs. Next, we discuss post-treatment, including continuous drafting and thermal annealing, to further optimize the CNTs orientation and compact configuration. Finally, we summarize the physical property-structure relationship to give insights for further performance promotion in order to satisfy the prerequisite for detailed application. Insights into propelling high-performance CNTFs production from lab-scale to industry-scale are proposed, in anticipation of this novel fiber having an impact on our lives in the near future.

Abstract:This paper introduced the principle of thermo-regulated fibers and fabric, and reviewed the recent developments of thermo-regulated fibers and fabric both at home and abroad. The fabrication technologies, such as textile coating with phase change materials (PCMs), hollow fiber filling with PCMs, sheath/core composite fiber with melt-spinning were discussed by comparing the merits and faults. In addition, the encapsulated phase change materials mixing methods including textile coating with microencapsulated phase change materials (MicroPCMs), sheath/core composite fiber containing MicroPCMs with melt-spinning, thermo-regulated fiber containing MicroPCMs prepared by wet-spinning and textile filling with MicroPCMs, were also investigated. At the end, the authors also pointed out the orientation of thermo-regulated fibers and fabric.
