Abstract:Pigment matter in fiber cells of brown or green cotton could be extracted by HNO_(3)/ethanol distillation, and its content could be estimateed by absorbance reding at 412 nm for distillation solution. Pigment matter inbrown or green cotton fiber cells could be obviously detected when fiber cells grown up to about 15 days post anthesis (DPA), reaching a maxiumun content at 20 DPA. Fiber color change from white to brown in the boll of brown cotton was not found until 30-25 DPA, and brown color was very stable and even deepening in the sunlight. However, fiber in the green cotton boll began to be colored green at 20 DPA, after this, fiber color was gradulaly deepened with fiber development, but easy to fad in the sunlight. Cellulose content in brown or green cotton fiber was significantly lower than in whitoe cotton fiber, which might be caused by accumulation of fiber pigment matter. Between 15 and 30 DPA, the pH in white fiber cells lowered rapidly, while that in brown or green fiber cells slowly. It was suggested that a rapid o slow cecline for fiber cell pH during this period might bring some effects on fiber cell elongation, secondary wall synthesis and cologr change. Comparing with white fiber, quality of brown or green colored fibers was lower, such as shorter length and weaker strength, which possible reason was discussed in the paper.

Abstract:Abstract To improve the level dyeing property and colorfastness of natural pigment-dyed cellulose fiber, a study on the structure and properties of natural indigo spun-dyed viscose fiber was carried out systematically. Herein, the natural pigment-dyed cellulose fiber was prepared by wet-spinning technique, and the microstructure of the colored fiber was comprehensively studied. Fabrics with different color depths were obtained by adjusting the color value and the content of indigo pigment. The natural indigo was evenly embedded in the viscose fiber, and the results indicated the existence of a direct ratio relationship between the performance of natural indigo and the color depth of the fiber. The level dyeing property and colorfastness of the fabric were tested. The fabric exhibited excellent dyeing uniformity, as indicated by the relative standard deviation of the surface color depth value on the fabric, which was no more than 2.39%. The colorfastness of natural indigo spun-dyed fiber was outstanding even when mordant was not used in the production process. The colorfastness to artificial light could reach grade 5, the fastness to washing with detergent reached grade 3–4, the fastness to rubbing reached grade 4–5, and that to high temperature reached grade 4–5. These results can possibly promote the future use of natural dyes in the fiber produced by a spun-dyeing technique.

Abstract:Textile Research Journal, Ahead of Print. To explore the color diversity and performance of functional submicron cotton fabric dyed with ecological natural dyes, three types of natural dyes sappanwood, madder, and gardenia and orchid, were used to dye the fabric. The optimal dyeing conditions for sappanwood were found to be an insulation temperature of 95°C, a dyeing bath pH of 5.5, and a dyeing time of 60 min, resulting in the highest apparent color value (K/S). For madder, the optimal conditions were an insulation temperature of 90°C, a dyeing bath pH value of 6, and a dyeing time of 60 min. Similarly, for gardenia and orchid, the optimal conditions were an insulation temperature of 90°C, a dyeing bath pH value of 5, and a dyeing time of 60 min. Based on these preferred dyeing processes, the K/S value, color characteristic value, color fastness, and biodegradability of the three natural dyes were compared and analyzed with synthetic dyes. The results showed that natural dyeing resulted in higher brightness (L* values), lower color depth (C* values), lower red-green (a*) and yellow-blue (b*) values, similar hues, and lower K/S values compared to synthetic dyeing. The color fastness of the natural dyes was slightly lower than that of chemical dyes by 0.5 grade. Additionally, the average breaking strength, elongation at break, tearing strength, and bursting strength of the fabric increased by 9.34%, 5.69%, 9.75%, and 7.31%, respectively. Furthermore, the biodegradability of the natural dyes was over 93%, significantly higher than that of synthetic dyes. These findings provide a theoretical basis for the production of eco-friendly dyeing of functional submicron cotton fabrics and their textile color applicability.

Abstract:Naturally colored cotton (NCC) offers an environmentally friendly fiber for textile applications. Processing white cotton fiber into textiles requires extensive energy, water, and chemicals, whereas processing of NCC skips the most polluting activity, scouring-bleaching and dyeing; therefore, NCC provides an avenue to minimize the harmful impacts of textile production. NCC varieties are suitable for organic agriculture since they are naturally insect and disease-resistant, salt and drought-tolerant. Various fiber shades, ranging from light green to tan and brown, are available in the cultivated NCC ( Gossypium hirsutum L.) species. The pigments responsible for the color of brown cotton fiber are proanthocyanidins or their derivatives synthesized by the flavonoid pathway. Due to pigments, the NCC has excellent ultraviolet protection properties. Some brown cotton varieties exhibited superior thermal resistance of fiber that can be used to make fabrics with enhanced flame retardancy. Here, we review molecular mechanisms involved in the pigment production of brown cotton and challenges in breeding NCC varieties with a wide range of colors but without penalty in fiber quality. Also, we discuss opportunities for NCC with flame-retarding properties in textile applications.

Study On The Application Of Chitosan For Natural Dyes Dyeing On Cotton Fabrics

Abstract:Chitosan had the high content of primary amino groups and the cotton fiber was modified by chitosan to improve the dyeing performance of natural dyes. The optimal modifying process was studied and the dyeing properties such as K/S value and color fastness were investigated. FTIR TGA and SEM were applied to analyze the functional group thermodynamics performance and surface appearance. As a result, it was found that chitosan enhanced the dye-uptake of natural dyes and increased natural dyes sorption on cotton fabric. Natural dyes showed favorable dyeing performace on cotton fabric modified by chitosan. The ultraviolet protective properties of the dyed cotton were evaluated. It was found that the dyed cotton had good UV-protection ability.

Abstract:Through cationic modification of cotton fiber,the dyeing property of natural dye on cotton fabric were improved effectively.The optimal dyeing process was dyeing at 60~70 ℃ for 50~60 minutes with liquor ratio 1∶20.As a result,the modified cotton fabrics dyed with natural dyes featured good UV-protective effect,and its soaping color fastness reached 4 grades and the crocking color fastness was about 3 grades.

Abstract:In this study, the ultraviolet protective properties of the cotton fabrics dyed with natural dyes were investigated. It was observed that cotton fabrics dyed with natural dyes could absorb about 80% of the ultraviolet rays. It was demonstrated that the UV-protective effects were strongly dependent on the absorption characteristics of natural dyes for UV radiation.

Abstract:Aiming at the problems of low dye-uptake and poor color fastness of natural dyes on cotton,the technology of non-reactive modification on cotton was studied.The influences of modifier type,modifier concentration,treating temperature,treating pH value and treating time on K /S value in dyeing of modified cotton were discussed.The mechanical properties,levelness,and color fastness of the cotton before and after modification were analyzed.The results demonstrated that the modified cotton fabrics still kept good whiteness,strength and absorbent quality.When dyed with natural dyes,it showed obvious improvement in K /S value,good levelness and color fastness.

Abstract:Cationic modification agent was used for cotton modification in order to improve dyeing performance of natural dyes on cotton fabrics.The modification mechanism was studied and the changes of cotton fiber structure were analyzed by using TGA and FTIR technics.The results show that by optimizing modification process and dyeing process,the soaping color fastness can reach 4 grades and the crocking fastness is about grade 3.The cotton fabrics dyed with natural dyes showes good UV-protective effect.

Abstract:Replacing cotton fiber with cationic dyeable modified polyester may effectively alleviate the pressure of cotton resource shortage. Porel is a new generation of cotton-like cationic dyeable polyester fiber with reduced modulus, rigidity, pilling, and improved softness. In this work, cationic dye dyeing process and hygroscopic and quick-drying property tests were conducted on Porel products. The findings indicated that 100 °C and 30 mins were the ideal dyeing temperature and time for Porel spandex core-spun yarns. Fastness to rubbing and washing achieved 4.5 grade, and fastness to sunlight reached 6–7 grade. Compared with cotton spandex core-spun yarn, the overall cost per ton of Porel spandex core-spun yarn can be saved by 35%. Furthermore, Porel denim was proven to have excellent moisture absorption and quick drying properties. This study introduces a novel approach to addressing the challenges associated with cotton scarcity through the development of functional cotton-like products.

A Study on the UV Transmission Property of Cotton Fabric

Abstract:The UV transmission ratio of cotton fabrics is examined and compared with other fabrics that are different in fiber type,in structure or in process history.The results show that the cotton fabric has weaker UV absorbance and higher UV transmission than PET and silk.The difference of UV transmission property of cotton fabrics with different structure or different processing history impacts the effect of anti-UV finish strongly.Knitting fabric and weaving fabric with lower density have higher open area ratio,so they have not only high UV transmission,but also bad anti UV finish effect.Optic whitening finished fabrics will change their property of UV transmission and the tendency depend on the type and structure.Anti UV finish is not necessary for dyed cotton fabric,especially the dark dyed fabric because dyestuff and other coloring substance reduce the UV transmission ratio dramatically.

Abstract:Natural dyestuffs are evaluated as green sources to color the fabric in the textile industry. In this study, tea natural dye extracted from Longjing tea was applied to dye cotton fabrics by different dyeing processes. The extraction process was investigated thoroughly according to orthogonal experiments to obtain the optimum results. The acid-base stability, storage stability, heat-resistance, and other properties of Longjing tea natural dye were studied. The rubbing fastness, washing fastness and color difference of natural tea dyed cotton fabrics using different dyeing processes were measured. It has been proved that pre-mordant dyeing process and reactive dyeing process are more suitable for Longjing tea natural dye. The rubbing fastness and washing fastness of the dyed cotton fabrics are both very good, fully meeting the dressing requirements.

Abstract:Anisotropic silver nanoparticles were assembled on cotton fibers to realize the coloration of cotton. The assembly of silver nanoparticles on fibers was achieved by linking of poly(diallyldimethylammonium chloride) (PDDA) at room temperature. The silver nanoparticle treated cotton showed different colors because of localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) property of silver nanoparticles. The coloration was completed through electrostatic interaction between the PDDA treated cotton surface and the anisotropic silver nanoparticles in the reaction system. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) characterization demonstrated that the morphologies of silver nanoparticles remained unchanged during the coloration process, so the treated cotton inherited the LSPR optical features of silver nanoparticles. Moreover, the cotton colorated with silver nanoparticles showed reasonably good color fastness to washing, which will facilitate the practical application of this coloration process.

Abstract:Natural dyes are known for their green and environmentally friendly characteristics. However, the narrow color spectrum of individual natural dyes limits their industrial application. The aim of this study is to broaden the color spectrum and create more color tones through the technique of sequential dyeing with two different dye materials. In this research, Caesalpinia sappan L. ( C. sappan ), a red dye, and Galla chinensis ( G. Chinensis ), a black dye, were used to dye cotton fabrics. The study systematically evaluated the dyeing behavior of C. sappan and G. Chinensis alone and through binary sequential dyeing method. Colorimetric parameters ( L *, a *, b *, C *, h° , and K/S ) were used to characterize the dyeing results and investigate the dyeing mechanism and color variation patterns. A preliminary assessment of dye stability indicated that the dyeing temperature and dyeing pH played a significant role in determining the main color tendency of C. sappan -dyed cotton fabrics. The results demonstrated that binary sequential dyeing with C. sappan and G. Chinensis dye effectively broadened the dyeing color spectrum. The overall color gamut ranges for a * were 2.97–34.40, for b * were − 4.03 to 13.93, for C * were 3.69–37.20, and for h° were 332.60–65.09. Through color tolerance value screening, the binary sequential dyeing with C. sappan and G. chinensis dye resulted in a total of 100 colors, belonging to 14 color tones. The binary sequential dyeing method also significantly improved the color fastness of the dyed cotton fabrics, with washing fastness improving from 3–4 to 4–5, rubbing fastness improving from 4 to 4–5, and light fastness improving from 3–4 to 4–5, meeting the standards for textile use. This study effectively expanded the color gamut of natural dyes through sequential dyeing, providing technical support for the industrial application and promotion of natural dyes.

Environmentally Friendly Coloration of Polyamide Fabrics with the Use of Natural Dyes: A Study Including Results of Industrial Scale Applications

Abstract:In recent years, it is seen that there have been many publications on natural dyes in literature. In the studies carried out, one or more plants were taken and the color and fastness obtained with them in the presence of different mordants were examined. Beyond that, functionalities such as odor, antibacterial activity, and UV protection that natural dyes impart to the fabric were examined. However, the important thing that the literature needs is to represent also the results related to the industrial scale production since industry shows high interest to be able to use natural dyes. In this study, seven plant dyes have been used for the coloration of polyamide fabric. The studies have been conducted both on an industrial scale and at the laboratory scale. Based on the statistical analyses, four dyes with the highest color strength and fastness properties including catechu, madder, mulberry leaf, and pomegranate peel were selected for more studies on industrial scale. The results confirmed the good color strength and satisfactory fastness properties against repeated washing, rubbing, water, and perspiration for all selected dyes. The samples dyed with those dyes exhibited excellent protection against UV radiation. The results obtained in this study showed the potential of the selected natural dyes in eco-friendly industrial dyeing of nylon fabric with acceptable fastness properties.
